Overview of Wind Atlas for South Africa (WASA) project WASA Project Team 13 March 2012, Cape Town, South Africa
Outline The WASA Project Team The First Verified Numerical Wind Atlas for South Africa The WASA Project Wind data and Observational Wind Atlas Verification and uncertainties And so what?!? What comes next? 2 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
Who are we? The WASA Project Team SANERI (South African National Energy Research Institute) executing partner contracting the implementing partners coordination and dissemination UCT CSAG (Climate System Analysis Group, University of Cape Town) mesoscale modelling CSIR (Built Environment, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) measurements and microscale modelling SAWS (South African Weather Service) extreme wind assessment DTU Wind Energy* (Dept of Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark) partner in all activities * the original DTU partner (Risø DTU) is part of DTU Wind Energy established Jan 2012 3 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
First Verified Numerical Wind Atlas for South Africa a map and much more Generalized climatological l i l (30 year) annual mean wind speed [m/s] ]100 m above ground level, flat terrain, 3 cm roughness everywhere 4 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
First Verified Numerical Wind Atlas for South Africa the database In the WASA modelling domain wind climate data is available every 5 km 5 km corresponding to approximately 15000 virtual masts. Mid-term Workshops 14 and 16 March 2012 describe WASA methods, tools, products and their application. Data are available through wasadata.csir.co.za/wasa1/wasadata 5 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
But how did we get there? The WASA Project presented at workshops Global Measurements G wind farm Mesoscale modeling Regional wind climate Microscale modeling Local wind Global wind resources 6 Presentations and links to information are available at the SANERI web site www.saneri.org.za Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
So what else have we got? 10 WASA masts High quality wind measurements for verification of modelling WASA Data recovery (%) U mean @ 61.5m (m/s) WM01 100.0 5.83 WM02 100.0 6.19 WM03 100.0 7.13 WM04 100.00 6.68 WM05 95.8 8.58 WM06 100.0 7.00 WM07 100.00 695 6.95 WM08 100.0 7.36 WM09 89.6 7.55 WM10 92.4 652 6.52 7 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
and WASA data www.wasa.csir.co.za 10-minute data, graphs and station information Everything available online in the public domain More than one full year of validated data Very good data recovery rate User statistics to date 444 registered users 380 users downloaded d d data 16136 downloads d 37 countries 8 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
and Observational Wind Atlas database and report available through h wasadata.csir.co.za/wasa1/wasadata WM01 WM02 WM03 WM04 WM05 WM06 WM07 WM08 5.0 10.0 Wind speed at 80 m above ground level WM09 WM10 10 x 10 km grid WAsP resource grids from Observational Wind Atlas 10 x 10 km 2 grid 100 meter grid spacing 9 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
So how good is it? Verification and uncertainties Verification is a key element One measure of quality is obtained by comparing wind atlas to measurements mean absolute error on wind speed of 5.6% This is state-of-the-art and as expected South Africa is challenging for wind resource modelling Model set-up modified Improvements done And so what?!? 10 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
First Verified Numerical Wind Atlas for South Africa Uncertainties assessed Public domain Industry-standard Traceable and transparent Platform for future development Generalized climatological l i l (30 year) annual mean wind speed [m/s] ]100 m above ground level, flat terrain, 3 cm roughness everywhere 11 Wind Atlas for South Africa project WASA Wind Atlas Launch 13 Mar 2012
Why Wind Atlas is important? Energy in wind P = ½ U 3 [W/ m 2 ] Wind power economics Investment costs Operation and maintenance costs Electricity production ~ Wind resources Turbine lifetime Discount rate Environmental benefits Wind speed U [m/s] the wind resource provides the income 12 13 Mar 2012 WASA Wind Atlas Launch
