The Gauchos split a non-conference doubleheader with the Bruins in the team s last meeting on Mar. 24, 2009. UCLA posted an 8-0 six-inning mercy win over the Gauchos before UCSB bounced back and won the second game, 7-2. Tourney Time The Gauchos homestand will be short lived. UCSB will hit the road on Thursday to play in the Campbell-Cartier Classic at San Diego State. The Gauchos play the host Aztecs before taking on No. 1 Washington, Penn State, Utah State and Western Kentucky. For The Record UCSB jumped out to a 4-1 start after last weekend s Red Desert Classic, matching its mark through the first five games of the 2009 season. UCSB tied for third at the tournament with Utah, which also posted a 4-1 tourney mark. BYU and Utah State tied for first after posting perfect 5-0 records. Coach s Corner Head coach Brie Galicinao, who is now in her third season at the helm of the UCSB softball program, recorded her 60th win on Saturday as the Gauchos defeated Utah Valley. Galicinao has coached the Gauchos to a 60-50 cumulative record for a.545 winning percentage, the best by a UCSB coach since the softball program went Division I in 1982. Galicinao has coached three players to All-Region honors, two players to Big West Field Player of the Year accolades, one Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and 12 All-Big West Conference selections. In 2008, Galicinao was named the Big West Co-Coach of the Year after her first season leading the Gauchos. UCSBgauchos.com Page 1

I m Lovin It Freshman Kelly McDonald started her collegiate career with a bang last Thursday hitting the gamewinning grand slam in the 6-4 comeback victory over Northern Colorado. During the weekend she posted a.412 batting average and led the team with seven hits, six RBI and 10 total bases. The designated hitter also tallied two runs and a stolen base. She currently ranks second for hits and RBI, fourth for total bases and eighth for slugging percentage (.588) among Big West players. The Basepath Bandit Senior Jessica Ziegler cracked the UCSB top-10 list for career stolen bases over the weekend. The infielder went 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts bringing her career total to 32, ranking 10th all time and just two away from tying ninth-ranked Davis Beck (2001-04). Ziegler also moved up to seventh on the career runs list after scoring four, which brings her total to 79. She needs just five more runs to match sixth-ranked Brittany Putich s (2004-07) career output. On The Verge Junior Jessica Beristianos is just three RBI away from cracking the UCSB career top-10 list. The infielder has posted 57 during her career with the Gauchos. Best In The (Big) West The Gauchos currently lead the Big West in two categories: stolen bases and fielding percentage. UCSB posted a.979 fielding percentage and committed just three errors over the weekend vs. six by its opposition. The Gauchos went 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts. If UCSB keeps up its blistering pace of 1.8 stolen bases per game, the Gauchos could match the school record of 91, set in 2003. Triple Threat UCSB scored three runs in three of its games last weekend and is currently averaging 3.8 runs per game, just slightly under the team s 2009 average of 4.04 per game. Walk It Off Two of the Gauchos biggest bats Keilani Jennings and Jessica Beristianos weren t doing much swinging last weekend as the pair led UCSB for walks, accounting for 11 of the 18 earned by the team. Jennings leads the team with six while Beristianos drew five. In The Circle With Mel Senior pitcher MeLinda Matsumoto has gotten off to a 2-0 start to the season after picking up wins over Tulsa and Utah Valley, already matching her number of victories from 2009. In her wins, she allowed just three earned runs on nine hits. She also struck out nine batters across 13.2 innings. UCSBgauchos.com Page 2

Correa tossed a complete game against Maine and allowed just two earned runs on four hits. She walked three and struck out four on her way to the 3-2 victory. The senior currently leads the team with her 2.00 ERA and.174 opponent batting average. Cobb got the start in the season-opener against Northern Colorado and gave up four earned runs on eight hits. Her eight strikeouts in the complete game victory were just one shy of her career-best. The sophomore dropped to 1-1 on the season after taking the loss against BYU. Tackling The Top The game with Washington is the Gauchos first against a No. 1 team since Feb. 28, 2004 when they faced top-ranked UCLA. The highest ranked team UCSB has defeated in the past decade was thenranked No. 2 Arizona State on Mar. 2, 2007 by way of an 8-7 score. Preseason Predictions In the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll that was released last week, UCSB was picked to repeat as the conference s fourth place team this year. The Gauchos garnered 43 points in the poll, 13 points behind first-place Cal Poly. Long Beach State (51 points) and Cal State Fullerton (50 points) were ranked second and third, respectively. UCSB currently has the best record out of the seven conference teams that opened the season last week. Tweet, Tweet Head coach Brie Galicinao is on Twitter.
