Overview Why geography matters The power of GIS EWS GIS water stats EWS GIS sanitation stats How to build a GIS system EWS GIS life cycle Field validations Recommendations Challenges

Why Geography matters Around the world people are working more efficiently because of it Allows you to make better, more informed decisions

The power of GIS GIS is a computer software that links geographic information Where things are with descriptive information What things are Unlike flat paper maps, where what you see is what you get GIS can present many layers of different information.

Various EWS GIS Layers

EWS GIS Water Statistics 12574 Km Watermains 91 344 Valves 88 637 Fittings 44 Water Pump Stations 34 402 Fire Hydrants 9 658 Outlet Devices 877 Storage Tanks on 468 facilities

EWS GIS Sanitation Statistics 7 959 Km of Sewer pipes 270 542 Manholes 369 Waste Water Pump Stations 32 Waste Water Treatment Works 129 Bridges Water & Sanitation 33 Business Support facilities Water & Sanitation 21 tunnels Water & Sanitation

Other Items 291 403 Informal Dwellings 491 527 Land Parcels 26 586 Roads 765 Sub Places

GIS Best Practices: How to Build your system Start Small Software (Free / Expensive / ESRI) Hardware ( Desk Tops/ Laptops / Servers/ Printers)

How to Build your system Staff (Office / Field) GIS & IT or GIT Training ( Internal / External Certification) Business Processes (Use templates) Standard Operating Processes (Use Templates)

How to Build your system (2) Identify the information that you will create and manage with your GIS Map products Web mapping applications Data flows Database reports Key responsibilities 3D views Other mission based requirements

How to Build your system (3) Identity the key data theme based on your information requirements Identify how will each dataset be used For Editing For Modelling / Design / Planning / Operations For Asset Management Data Accuracy Collection Guidelines How is the theme going to be displayed

How to Build your system (4) Specify the scale ranges and spatial representations of each data theme at each scale What scale ranges are going to be used How will points, lines and polygons be represented You might have to generalize Alternative representations for different scales

How to Build your system (5) Decompose each representation into one or more geographic datasets Discrete features are modelled as feature classes Consider advanced data types such as Topologies Networks Terrains Surfaces can be modelled using features such as contours

How to Build your system (6) Define the tabular database structure and behaviour for descriptive attributes Identify attribute fields and column types Include domains Relationships Subtypes Identify tabular relationships for relationship classes ISO 19139

How to Build your system (7) Define the spatial behaviour, spatial relationships and integrity rules for you datasets Topology rules Must not self intersect Must not overlap End point must be covered by Must be covered by endpoint of Spatial Relationships Address Locators to support geocoding

How to Build your system (8) Propose a Geodatabase design Define the Geodatabase elements Study existing designs - ESRI.com Copy patterns Look at best practices from ArcGIS Data Models Talk and visit others

How to Build your system (9) Design editing workflows and map display properties Define the editing procedures Define the integrity rules for example all watermains must not split at intersections Design Editing workflows Ensure QA/QC

How to Build your system (10) Assign responsibilities for building and maintaining each data layer Determine who will do data maintenance Determine who will do the reconcile and posts Determine how data will be imported Determine the QA/QC of the data Enforce rules Plan for Disaster Recovery

How to Build your system (11) Build a working prototype, Review and refine your design Test your prototype design Build either a file, personal or ArcSDE Personal geodatabase first Perform editing operations Refine your design if required Check production, scalability and data management work flows

How to Build your system (12) Document your Geodatabase design Use drawings, map layers schema diagrams, simple reports and metadata documents Use a free downloadable diagrammer application ESRI.COM Keep your metadata up to date Use Visio

Some of our experiences Why ESRI? Massive support base Online and instructor training

EWS GIS Life cycle (1) Collect all drawings you can locate Sort the drawings (design, as laid, proposed) Be cautious of superseded drawings Investigate scales and geo-referencing per drawing Set up the capture process Set up progress measures and QA / QC Start the capture process

Record Drawings before and after scanning Before After

EWS GIS Life cycle (2) Check, check, check Document all expected processes Set up field validation teams Change to electronic as-builts Scan all drawings (EWS 136 000 Drawings) Publish Data (counters, engineers etc ) Pan for major upgrade every 2 years

Field Validations You cannot do everything in the office List all queries related to the data Send out field validation teams that use GPS equipment What type of GPS equipment should you consider How accurate does the GPS equipment need to be Set up field validation work flows Set up a queries database to track progress

Recommendations (field validations) Do not use open text fields Only use drop down choice lists Ensure all the field teams are correctly trained in the use of the equipment Ensure all the field teams are on the same page related to attribute capture and feature identification
