Characteristics of Life 7:53 AM

The Study of Life The Study of Life Biology: The study of LIFE! Biology is the sciencethat uses the scientific practices to study living things. The Greek word biosmeans life, and logy means study of.

7:53 AM

Examples A characteristic feature of Dalmatians is that they have spots! 7:53 AM

Examples Characteristic features of pugs are that they have short snouts and wrinkly faces! 7:53 AM

Think-pair-share What s another example of a characteristic? A characteristic of is. 7:53 AM

Living or not? What is living? What is non-living? 7:53 AM

Work with your partner to think of 4 characteristics of living things. Make a list in your notebook. Example: All living things must eat. 1. All living things. 2. All living things. 3. All living things. 4. All living things. 7:53 AM P4 p6

Revise/Edit your list of 4 characteristics with your partner. Is there anything you need to change? Add? Remove? 7:53 AM

Living things 1) Are made of cells. Cell:the smallest unit of an organism.

2) Reproduce Living things Sexual reproduction:requires two different parents. Asexual reproduction:requires only one parent. 7:53 AM

Living things 3) Grow and develop Example: From conception to birth to childhood to adulthood p6 7:53 AM

7:53 AM Another example

7:53 AM

7:53 AM

7:53 AM

Living things 4) Obtain and use energy. Metabolism: Combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down material. Examples: Eating Photosynthesis p4 7:53 AM

Living things 5) Respond to their environment. Organisms detect and respond to stimuli. Stimulus is a signal to which an organism responds. 7:53 AM

7:53 AM

Living things 6) Maintain a stable internal environment. Homeostasis the ability of an organism to maintain a constant internal environment. 7:53 AM

7) Have DNA Living things DNA is the instructions for life. 7:53 AM

Definition of life Life -a state of living characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, have cells, and reproduction. 7:53 AM

Biology: The Big Picture

7:53 AM Video

Life PICTURE 5 sentences: definition, details, examples 7:53 AM

How Large is a Cell? Levels of organization helps with understanding how large a cell is. 7:53 AM

With your partners, list these words from smallest to largest. Use a pencil! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Organelles Tissue Cells Organ system Atoms Molecules Organism Organ 7:53 AM

7:53 AM Levels of Organization

Atoms the basic unit of a chemical element. 7:53 AM

Molecules Groups of atoms; smallest unit of most chemical compounds Example: Water& DNA

Organelles Groups of molecules make up organelles 7:53 AM

1. Cell: the smallest unit of life that is considered a living thing

2. Tissue: a group of cells that work together and perform a function.

3. Organ: a group of similar tissues that work together to perform a function.

Some human organs are: heart, lungs, brain, stomach, and muscles.

4. Organ System: one or more organs that work together and perform one or more functions.

Some human organ systems are: skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, and the respiratory system

5. Organism: the most complex living thing. Organisms contain many organ systems that each have their own function, but depend on each other to help the organism function.

-All levels of organization need to function in order for the organism to be alive and healthy. -If one level of the levels of organization fails, the organism would not function properly and would die.

1. Atoms 2. Molecules 3. Organelles 4. Cells 5. Tissue 6. Organ 7. Organ system 8. Organism Smallest to largest 7:53 AM

Population Groups of organisms of one species(type) that live in the samearea.

Community Different group of organisms of the same species that live together in a defined area.

Ecosystem Living organisms andtheir nonliving surroundings.

Biosphere The part of the Earth that contains all ecosystems (life).
