T H E P L A C E THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO The Mergui Archipelago lies off the far south coast of Myanmar. It's comprised of hundreds of islands that have coral reefs and beaches. The Mergui is home to the seafaring indigenous Moken people. It's a haven for birds, notably the plain-pouched hornbill, as well as marine life like dugongs and turtles. UNESCO World Heritage Site designation While the biodiversity is largely unknown, the intact vegetation on such an array of islands, with associated marine habitats and spectacular geomorphology, is likely to be of high global biodiversity significance. The biodiversity values of this set of forested continental islands, and the limited protection afforded such coastal islands elsewhere in the region, indicates that they are likely to be of global priority and form a potentially important trans-boundary World Heritage inscription.
T H E P L A C E PILA ISLAND The Nomadic Moken Seafarers The Legend of Pila Island The Austronesian people of the Mergui Archipelago, live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle heavily based on the sea. Their knowledge of the sea enables them to live off its fauna and flora by using simple tools such as nets and spears to forage for food. What is not consumed is dried on top of their boats, then used to barter for other necessities at local markets. During the monsoon season, they relocate to dry-land into temporary huts and use this time to build additional boats. Normally they live in small hand-crafted wooden boats which serve not just as transportation, but also as the kitchen, bedroom, and living area. Aside from ancestor worship, the Moken have no religion. A great mythological flood broke the islands into 800 mostly uninhabited, limestone and granite islands. Pila Island is one of the islands created from this legend. Pila is southwest of Great Swinton Islands and Pulo Pankyup and west of Rocky Islet. Kyun Pila has an elevation of 29 meters. Destinations nearby to Kyun Pila include Rocky Islet and Pulo Set.

Beyond the beach lies a forested area, offering guests shade beneath a canopy of exotic trees. The adjacent hillside is accessible by trail, opening up opportunities for further exploration of the island s unique flora and fauna. Guests can also visit the nearby Fisherman s bay to sample a taste of the local seafaring culture as well as a unique water sports experience. T H E P R O D U C T THE DESIGN The guest areas are centred on the reception, restaurant, and swimming-pool, with rooms extending along the beach front. Two types of guest rooms are provided to give guests a choice of experience of either the sea or adjacent forest.
T H E P R O D U C T THE ROOMS & SUITES The suites are designed around a light weight insulated timber and fabric structure. The prefabricated fabric structures allow for low environmental impact, with minimal foundations maintaining the existing vegetation. The architecture reinforces the feeling of a base camp for exploration and adventure, mixed with local touches of Myanmar traditional construction techniques. Rooms: Timber and Fabric Sleeping Quarters (Yurt): 32 m2 Outdoor Decking: 14 m2 Bathroom and outdoor shower: 13 m2 Total: 59 m2 The interiors of the sleeping quarters are light and fresh, using white washed timber lattice and duck cotton fabric walls. The intention is to provide a soft and pleasant internal environment which sits in contrast to the raw natural environment around. Natural light is allowed in through two large floor to ceiling openings, also giving way to sea views for the beach front suites. Locally produced furniture and decorative items provide further character to the room.
T H E P R O D U C T RECEPTION, RESTAURANT, BAR & SWIMMING POOL Inspired by the circular geometry of the guest suite, the reception / restaurant structure sits in contrast to the rooms. This open air heavy timber structure provides shelter to the social hub of the resort. The bar sits in the center with the other two functions flanking either side, all with open view onto the sea and overlooking the swimming pool. The floor surface blends continuously through to the pool and beyond to the beach.
