P.O. Box 141874 Gainesville, FL 32614-1874 USA http://centerforsystematicentomology.org/ Insecta Mundi is a journal primarily devoted to insect systematics, but articles can be published on any non-marine arthropod. Topics considered for publication include systematics, taxonomy, nomenclature, checklists, faunal works, and natural history. Insecta Mundi will not consider works in the applied sciences (i.e. medical entomology, pest control research, etc.), and no longer publishes book reviews or editorials. Insecta Mundi publishes original research or discoveries in an inexpensive and timely manner, distributing them free via open access on the internet on the date of publication. Insecta Mundi is referenced or abstracted by several sources, including the Zoological Record and CAB Abstracts. Insecta Mundi is published irregularly throughout the year, with completed manuscripts assigned an individual number. Manuscripts must be peer reviewed prior to submission, after which they are reviewed by the editorial board to ensure quality. One author of each submitted manuscript must be a current member of the Center for Systematic Entomology. Guidelines and requirements for the preparation of manuscripts are available on the Insecta Mundi website at http://centerforsystematicentomology.org/insectamundi/ Chief Editor: David Plotkin, insectamundi@gmail.com Assistant Editor: Paul E. 0682: 1 4 2018 Miscellaneous notes on the fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) in McDermott s 1966 catalogue of Lampyridae II Oliver Keller okeller1977@gmail.com Marc A. Branham marcbran@ufl.edu Abstract. The following nomenclatural changes for several firefly taxa (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) are proposed and herein implemented. Correction of authorship is proposed for Lampyroidea lucifer (Reiche and de Saulcy, 1857). Spelling corrections are proposed for Photinus coroicosus Pic, 1941 and Macrolampis flavithorax Pic, 1940. Dates of publication are corrected for Photinus curticornis Pic, 1940, Phausis riversi (LeConte, 1885), Ellychnia autumnalis Melsheimer, 1846, Ellychnia facula LeConte, 1854, Lamprigera nitidicollis (Fairmaire, 1891), Cladodes gloriosus E. Olivier, 1909, Photuris brunnipennis Jacquelin Du Val, 1857, Pyrogaster subnitidus Pic, 1928, Pyrogaster telephorinus (Perty, 1830), and Lampyroidea dispar (Fairmaire, 1857). Key words. Nomenclature, authorship, date of publication. Introduction The taxonomic revision of Lampyridae (McDermott 1964) and an updated and revised version of Ernest Olivier s (1910) lampyrid catalogue (McDermott 1966) are undoubtedly the most impactful contributions by Frank Alexander McDermott (1885 1966). He was a biochemist by occupation but published over 60 articles on bioluminescence and fireflies. The catalogue contains a few mistakes concerning authorship, spelling, and dates of publication, which are mostly based on typographical errors or the lack of literature. Some of these mistakes were addressed and corrected in Keller and Branham (2018a, b). Websites such as the Integrative Taxonomic Information System (ITIS 2018) often use catalogues and therefore inaccuracies and mistakes are carried forward. Due to access to McDermott s original literature notecards and the original descriptions, mistakes were easily found. Here we provide background information, and corrections for each case are proposed. Materials and Methods Methods follow Keller and Branham (2018a). Misspellings and mistakes were based on typographical errors unless otherwise stated. Species within each section are in order of appearance in McDermott (1966).

2 Insecta Mundi 0682, December 2018 Keller and Branham Results and Discussion Authorship Lampyroidea lucifer (Reiche and de Saulcy, 1857) Luciola lucifer Reiche and de Saulcy 1857: 169 Lampyroidea lucifer Reiche [sic], 1857; McDermott 1966: 115 Note. Both Reiche and de Saulcy are shown as authors in Reiche and de Saulcy (1857), and not just Reiche as indicated by McDermott (1966). Name Misspelling Photinus coroicosus Pic, 1941 Photinus coroicosus Pic 1941: 10 Photinus coriocosus [sic] Pic, 1941; McDermott 1966: 38 Note. This species was most likely named after the town Coroico in the La Paz department of Bolivia. Macrolampis flavithorax Pic, 1940 Macrolampis flavithorax Pic 1940: 10 Macrolampis flavothorax [sic] Pic, 1940; McDermott 1966: 48 Dates of Publication Photinus curticornis Pic, 1940 Photinus curticornis Pic 1940: 15 Photinus curticornis Pic, 1941 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 38 Phausis riversi (LeConte, 1885) Lamprohiza riversi LeConte 1885: 20 Phausis riversi (LeConte, 1884 [sic]); McDermott 1966: 54 Ellychnia autumnalis Melsheimer, 1846 Ellychnia autumnalis Melsheimer 1846: 303 Ellychnia autumnalis Melsheimer, 1845 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 57 Note. Based on text preceding Melsheimer s description, he presented the paper to the Academy of Natural Sciences on August 6 th and September 27 th, 1844. The article was printed in four parts in fascicle 5 (September and October, 1844), fascicle 6 (November and December, 1844), fascicle 8 (March and April, 1845), and fascicle 12 (November and December, 1845). Each fascicle contains meeting reports of the months stated in parentheses. The firefly descriptions are in fascicle 12, which was printed in 1846, not 1845. All previous fascicles were printed between 1844 and 1845 and bound with fascicle 12 as one volume in 1846. Ellychnia facula LeConte, 1854 Ellychnia facula LeConte 1854: 17 Ellychnia facula LeConte, 1857 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 58 Lamprigera nitidicollis (Fairmaire, 1891) Lamprophorus nitidicollis Fairmaire 1891: 90 Lamprigera nitidicollis (Fairmaire, 1881 [sic]); McDermott 1966: 77 Note. McDermott s notecard had the incorrect date associated with this species.

Fireflies in McDermott s 1966 catalogue Insecta Mundi 0682, December 2018 3 Cladodes gloriosus E. Olivier, 1909 Cladodes gloriosus E. Olivier 1909: 122 Cladodes gloriosus E. Olivier, 1885 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 82 Note. In the catalogue, McDermott used Olivier (1885) as the date of publication, but his notecard reads E. Olivier (1907). This publication (Olivier 1907) only contains a catalogue entry and a figure of the species, and lacks a proper description, but is cited as the description date by Olivier (1910). The description was printed in 1909. Also, while the first mention of the species was for Cladodes gloriosus in Olivier (1907), the associated figure was incorrectly labeled Lucidota gloriosus. Photuris brunnipennis Jacquelin Du Val, 1857 Photuris brunnipennis Jacquelin Du Val 1857: 89 Photuris brunnipennis Jacquelin Du Val, 1856 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 89 Pyrogaster subnitidus Pic, 1928 Pyrogaster subnitidus Pic 1928: 59 Pyrogaster subnitidus Pic, 1929 [sic]; McDermott 1966: 97 Pyrogaster telephorinus (Perty, 1830) Homalisus telephorinus Perty 1830: 27 Pyrogaster telephorinus (Perty, 1833 [sic]); McDermott 1966: 98 Note. Description of the species is on page 27 of Perty (1830 1833). Pages 1 60 were published in 1830, the remaining pages in subsequent years. Lampyroidea dispar (Fairmaire, 1857) Luciola dispar Fairmaire 1857: 739 Lampyroidea dispar (Fairmaire, 1855 [sic]); McDermott 1966: 115 Acknowledgments We thank James Lloyd (, ) for his invaluable information about McDermott.
