Alignment of Liquid Crystal Director Fields Using Monolayers Angel Martinez, Cal Poly Pomona, REU Dr. Ivan I. Smalyukh

5CB Liquid Crystals (LCs) CN Flow like liquids; Anisotropic like solid crystals; Crystal liquid crystal (nematic) Isotropic fluid nˆ Average local molecular orientations in liquid crystals are described by the director with head-tail symmetry LC is a state of matter intermediate between that of a crystalline solid & an isotropic liquid. LCs possess many of the properties of liquid, e.g., high fluidity, viscosity, formation, and coalescence of droplets. At the same time they are similar to crystals in that they exhibit anisotropy in their optical, mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties. LCs exhibit a great variety of phases, which differ one from another by their structure and physical properties. nˆ nˆ

nˆ q nˆ The Order Parameter S To quantify just how much order is present in a material, an order parameter (S) is defined: 1 P 2 2 2(cos q) (3 cos q 1) cos 2 q 2 o cos ( q 0 ) 1 2 cos qd 1 d 3 s no order perfect order LC-isotropic transition S S P(cos q ) 1 2 P(cos q ) 0 2 perfect crystal isotropic fluid temperature Orientational order represents the tendency of the molecules to align along the director on a long-range basis.

Alignment by external fields: IN-PLANE SWITCHING The cell consists of two glass substrates coated with patterned in-plane transparent indium-tinoxide (ITO) electrodes and with rubbed alignment layers. 5

Basics of azo-benzene dye molecules and their sensitivity to light

Photoisomerized dye Azobenzenes molecules reorient perpendicular to the polarization of the exciting light due to isomerization process. The methyl red derivative (DMR) is used to form self-assembled monolayers (azo- SAMs). h N N h trans cis N N (H 3 C) 2 N N N H N C (H 2 C) 3 O O Si O O DMR

Motivation and Procedure for Producing Monolayers Thorough cleaning of glass slides. Soap and water Sonicate in IPA, Acetone, and DI water Submerge and bake in Pirrahna at 90 C Submerge in DMR solution and bake at 45 Cx Azo-SAM can be used to align liquid crystals (LCs). Create desired boundary conditions Locally photo-reorient liquid crystal

Applying and Aligning Monolayers Clean Glass Or Glass with Monolayer Light Polarization

Beam steering of a focused beam Beam steering Focal Plane Objective Galvano mirrors can be scanned at ( 110) khz Polarizer

Create desired boundary conditions Use confocal microscope to write on two slides to create desired boundary conditions. AZO SAM AZO SAM AZO SAM AZO SAM

How Twisted Nematic Display Works? Bright state can correspond to field-on state and also to field-off state, depending on the design: Note that two different polarization modes can be used 13

Rotation & Translation by laser polarization Power ~.2 mw Adjusted polarization by about 90

Moving particles by realigning LCs Power ~.2 mw Green area is uniformly aligned Polarization of laser

Conclusions Monolayers provide yet another means of liquid crystal alignment. Monolayers affect the bulk of liquid crystal material by defining condition only at the surfaces. Dynamic alignment/realignment Monolayers used with tightly focused laser beams allow for creation of micro-scale patterns with increased resolution. Of interest for fundamental science unlimited # of boundary conditions Particles and cluster movable at powers ~10-100 times smaller than those used in optical laser tweezers.
