Chapter 1 Laplace s Equation Let be an open set in R n. 1.2. The Maximum Principle 3 1.2. The Maximum Principle From the mean value formula (1.7), it is easy to derive the following strong maximum principle for subharmonic functions. Theorem 1.2 (Strong maximum principle). Let be an open connected set in R n, and let u C 2 () satisfy u 0 in. Suppose there is a point x 0 such that u(x 0 ) = sup u. Then u = const in. Proof. The Harnack Inequality The following Harnack inequality is another consequence of the mean value formula (1.7) for harmonic functions. Theorem 1.7 (Harnack inequality).
