Particle size Welcome to the next generation Your sample, expertly processed and prepared Dispersion options 3000 detailed specification sheets from

Getting your sample preparation right The US Pharmacopeia provides a helpful summary of what a sample preparation unit for laser diffraction must provide: A representative sample, dispersed at an adequate concentration in a suitable liquid or gas * Sounds simple doesn t it? But with the Mastersizer 3000 specified for the measurement of very many materials, from coarse granulates to finely dispersed emulsions, no single sample dispersion technique or unit is universally applicable. So, Malvern has created a range of accessories to ensure reproducible sample preparation, in line with ISO13320:2009 and pharmacopeia requirements. *General Chapter 429, Light Diffraction Measurement of Particle Size. United States Pharmacopeia. Wet or dry... For wet dispersion, we have the Hydro family of products. Aero is the dry dispersion engine. Designed from the ground up, Aero redefines what a dry dispersion unit can do. All are controlled in real-time via the analyzer software. Auto-locking measurement cells, coupled with automated system initialization, streamlines the switch from one to another. The result is fast, efficient, well-controlled dispersion, whatever the sample. Flexible, independent operation for any user. 2

Back to basics - Wet dispersion Wet dispersion is the most common choice for particle size measurement. Essential for slurries and emulsions, it is also used in the analysis of fine, friable and fragile powders. Wet dispersion is more gentle than dry, enabling de-agglomeration without primary particle break-up, for even the most delicate of materials. The process of dispersion using liquids involves wetting each individual particle to ensure agglomerate separation. Dispersant choice and the use of sonication are important for success, while stabilizers may also be used to prevent re-agglomeration. From measurement cell To measurement cell Stirrer In-line ultrasound probe Centrifugal pump Dispersant pump Drain Rely on our experience Malvern s sample preparation accessories build on the experience and know-how that comes from having delivered more than 10,000 Mastersizer systems.the Hydro family is a range of compact units which span a variety of dispersant volumes. They meet the need for the larger sample volumes often required to representatively measure highly polydisperse materials, as well as the smaller volumes preferred when measuring high-value materials, especially during product development. Hydro units in the 100-1000ml dispersant range benefit from in-line sonication for more efficient dispersion, and powerful centrifugal pumps that prevent sedimentation. Wetted surfaces are chemically compatible with a wide choice of dispersants. The automatic delivery of organic and inorganic dispersants allows for close matching with application requirements. 3

The established leaders in wet dispersion Hydro LV The Hydro LV is a large volume dispersion unit, designed to achieve precise, automated dispersion in applications where sample availability is not an issue. Ideal for the measurement of higher density materials and broad size distributions, the system achieves agglomerate dispersal thought the use of in-line sonication, rapidly achieving reproducible dispersion and reproducible results. 600ml dispersant volume Powerful centrifugal pump system ensures bias-free sampling 35W in-line sonication probe, for rapid agglomerate dispersion Automated dispersant supply Full software control of all measurement functions, including dispersant supply, sample dispersion and cleaning Full chemical compatibility Hydro EV Using Malvern s unique dip-in sample dispersion head, the Hydro EV achieves full, rapid dispersion of samples in a standard laboratory beaker. Able to operate with a range of dispersant volumes, its efficient design ensures representative sampling across a wide range of particle sizes. Following measurement, the dispersion head can be raised out of the beaker, enabling quick cleaning and sample recovery. Compatible with 250ml, 600ml and 1000ml laboratory beakers Dip-in centrifugal pump and stirrer design 35W in-line sonication probe, for rapid agglomerate dispersion Software control of pump/stirrer and sonication Sample easily recovered following analysis Full chemical compatibility 4

Hydro MV The Hydro MV is an automated, smaller volume dispersion unit, enabling the measurement of a wide range of materials in both aqueous and non-aqueous liquids. Designed for applications where material is in short supply, or where dispersant use must be minimized, it ensures reproducible dispersion for smaller sample sizes. This makes it ideal for use during early stage product development, or for the dispersion of samples which are water-soluble. 100-150ml dispersant volume 35W in-line sonication probe, for rapid agglomerate dispersion Powerful centrifugal pump system ensures bias-free sampling Precise software control of all measurement functions, including dispersant supply, sample dispersion and cleaning Full chemical compatibility 5

Enjoy the advantages of dry dispersion Dry dispersion is fast and avoids the use of dispersants. The best method for suitable dry samples, it is especially important when particle size is influenced by hydration, for certain foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, coatings and building materials, for example. Collision Collision Velocity gradients caused by shear stress Particle-to-particle collisions Particle-to-wall collisions Mechanisms for dry dispersion. Representative measurement relies on providing sufficient energy to break up agglomerates without causing primary particle damage. Dry powder dispersers accelerate particles in an airstream to achieve this. New thinking Aero is a brand new dispersion engine, designed from the ground up using the latest dispersion theory. Capable of applying significant shear, it has no impaction surfaces. As a result Aero achieves complete and robust dispersion, even for friable and fragile particles, without inflicting particle damage. Aero extends the range of applicability for dry measurement. Three parameters are used to control dry dispersion: sample feed rate; disperser geometry; and air pressure. Advantage Aero Interchangeable geometries match the requirements of different sample types Air pressure dictates the amount of energy applied during dispersion, increasing pressure increasing the intensity of dispersion Sample feed rate can be precisely manipulated to control measurement concentration and ensure that sufficient data is recorded to reproducibly quantify the sample With a data acquisition rate of 10kHz, Mastersizer 3000 measures accurately at relatively fast feed rates, accelerating analysis 6

Aero S the new standard Achieving rapid, reproducible aerodynamic dispersion of dry powders, the Aero S dry powder disperser extends the range of applications for dry dispersion by providing a modular platform which is easily configured for different applications. Dispersion is achieved by accelerating particles through a venturi using compressed air. The availability of different disperser designs enables the system to measure friable materials and robust samples equally well, across an extremely wide size range (0.1-3500μm). Precise control of the sample feed rate and the applied dispersion pressure ensure the Aero system delivers the most reproducible results possible. Put simply, Aero is the world s most capable dry powder disperser Standard dispersers for both cohesive and fragile particle measurements Impaction systems available for robust material dispersion Precise dispersion pressure control, to 0.1 bar precision Range of sample feed trays and hoppers enable measurement of different sample sizes Enclosed cell delivers bias-free measurements whilst minimising user exposure to the sample Full software control of all measurement functions, including sample feed and dispersion 7
