WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK BELIZE, CENTRAL AMERICA PERIOD: Friday, July 6 until Monday, July 9, 2012 DATE ISSUED: Friday, July 6, 2012; 9:00 am RFrutos SYNOPSIS: An active tropical wave (TW) just west of Jamaica this morning will approach and move over Belize and Yucatan late Saturday, producing more outbreaks of showers and, and squally conditions. The airflow will remain moist and unstable on Monday through Wednesday as low pressures persist over northern Central America. Figure 1 GOES IR Satellite image for 9:45 am, Friday, July 6, 2012, showing scattered convection over and off-shore central Belize. The tropical wave west of Jamaica is generating deeper convection around and west of Jamaica as it moves W at 15 mph. Deep convection noted in the eastern Pacific of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec associated with a tropical disturbance drifting westward. 1

Figure 2 NHC surface map for 9:00 am, July 6, 2012, showing active tropical wave just west of Jamaica heading westwards at 15 mph. Figure 3 NHC 72-hr forecast surface map valid for 6:00 pm Sunday, July 8, 2012, showing TW over western Yucatan and Guatemala. Another TW can be observed approaching the eastern Caribbean. 2

Figure 4 GFS Model 48-hr 5,000 ft (850 mb) vorticity projection showing vorticity (yellow shaded area) maximum near southern Belize along axis of TW. Also depicted is the surge of strong winds at the low level in the easterlies accompanying the tropical wave. Figure 5 GFS model 48-hour rainfall projection valid for 6:00 am, Sunday, July 8, 2012 showing daily rainfall totals in the range of 1.00 2.00 inches for Saturday through Sunday morning. 3

The features of interest over the NW Caribbean and Belize this weekend are an approaching, active tropical wave (TW), coupled with a low level easterly surge in the trade winds. The TW is tracking westwards at 15 mph and will cross Belize on Saturday evening and night. Outbreaks of showers and will continue today, increasing on Saturday through Sunday. The showers and will be intense at times, accompanied by squalls. The showers will be concentrated over the coastal zone and areas of the Belize, Stann Creek, Cayo and Toledo Districts. Showers will also affect northern districts but will be less concentrated. Daily rainfall totals over central and northern areas will range from 0.50-1.00 inch today Friday. Higher, daily rainfall amounts of 1.50-2.00 inches are expected on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, especially in the higher elevations of the Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts. Soil condition over most districts is near field capacity, so the runoff in the hilly terrain will be quicker. Residents in low-lying and hilly areas should exercise caution this weekend. Remain vigilant and be prepared to move to higher grounds if necessary!
