4 FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES Virginia's 4:00 p.m. Burning Law goes into effect on February 15. Briefly, the 4:00 p.m. Burning Law states: from February 15 through April 30 of each year, no burning before 4:00 p.m. is permitted, if the fire is in, or within 300 feet of, woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable material. Since forest fuels cure during the winter months, the danger of fire is higher in early spring than in summer when the forest and grasses are green with new growth. The 4:00 p.m. Burning Law is an effective tool in the prevention of forest fires. Localities may have more restrictive outdoor burning laws. You can read the full text of the law on our website. Debris burning continues to be the leading cause of forest fires in Virginia. The 4:00 p.m. Burning Law is different from the burning bans, which are invoked only during periods of extreme fire danger. 5 FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES The Statewide Tornado Drill is a yearly opportunity to prepare Virginians for tornado emergencies and to test public warning systems. Save the date! The 2017 Statewide Tornado Drill will take place on Tornado Preparedness Day, Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 9:45 a.m. (If widespread severe weather threatens the Commonwealth on that date, then the drill will be on Wednesday, March 22, at 9:45 a.m.) At approximately 9:45 a.m., the National Weather Service will send a test tornado warning over NOAA Weather Radios. This test signal will sound a tone alert, show a test message or flash to indicate a message, simulating what people would hear or see during an actual tornado warning. Local radio stations, TV stations and cable outlets will also broadcast the test message via the Emergency Alert System. To participate, start your own tornado drill when you hear the test signal over NOAA Weather Radio or broadcast media. Tornadoes Tornadoes are nature s most violent storms. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds. A tornado appears as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. Every state is at some risk from this hazard. Some tornadoes are clearly visible, while rain or nearby low-hanging clouds obscure others. Occasionally, tornadoes develop so rapidly that little, if any, advance warning is possible. Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down and the air may become very still. A cloud of debris can mark the location of a tornado even if a funnel is not visible. Tornadoes generally occur near the trailing edge of a thunderstorm. It is not uncommon to see clear, sunlit skies behind a tornado. 13 COMMUNITY NEWS HELP US WELCOME OUR NEW COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR!! The King William County Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Mark K. Reeter as County Administrator as of March 1, Mr. Reeter comes to King William with nearly 30 years of local government experience, most recently as County Administrator for Bedford County, Virginia where he served on numerous boards and commissions, and previously as County Administrator for Washington County, Virginia for 17 years. Mr. Reeter holds a Bachelor Degree from University of Tennessee, where he graduated with honors in Political Science. He also holds a Master Degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Reeter has said I am honored to have been selected by the King William Board of Supervisors to serve in this capacity and look forward to working with the Board, County government and the King William community as its next chief administrative official. Travis Moskalski, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors stated: "The Board of Supervisors is pleased to be bringing Mr. Reeter to King William. We're confident that his strong background in local government management in the Commonwealth will help the Board achieve its goal of providing the best possible government for the citizens of the County. We would also like to thank all of our outstanding staff for continuing to provide excellent service during the interim period under the guidance of the Interim County Administrator Mr. Sanford B. Wanner.
