1 The KING S Medium Term Plan Geography Year 8 KS3 Learning Cycle 3 plan Module 3 Weather and climate Overarching Challenging question Subject Challenging Question Big Picture Lines of Enquiry How does the weather change across the world? Why and how is the UK s weather so varied? Weather and climate affect each of us every day. As King s students develop into the citizens of tomorrow, travelling to new and exciting places will undoubtedly be an aspiration for many of them understanding how the weather and climate is different which will help them with this ambition. Building on prior from LC1 and LC2, LC3 allows students to investigate the weather around Kings Warrington and learn about the weather around the UK. Students will investigate a number of themes within this popular topic, such as the difference between weather and climate, how to perform a geographical investigation and how to understand weather forecasts. Week 1: How are weather forecasts made? Week 2: How can we measure weather? Week 3 + 4: How does the microclimate vary across Kings Warrington? Week 5: Which factors affect Britain s climate? Progress By the end of this LC, students in Geography will be able:
2 Objectives To know and recall what weather and climate are. To understand how and why weather forecasts are used. To explain how weather is measured. To compare and contrast microclimates across Kings Warrington. To analyse data collected from a onsite fieldwork. To evaluate factors that influence Britain s climate. Assessment in week 6 will be against the above objectives Week 1 Week 2 LOE: How are weather forecasts made? Stage 1 + 2: What is a weather map and why are they useful? Hypothesis: Anybody can read a weather map LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to define weather and climate. Students will be able to explain the different weather symbols used on weather maps and produce their own weather forecast BRONZE: Identify a range of weather symbols SILVER: Use a weather map to describe the weather conditions for a certain area GOLD: Use a weather map to compare the weather in different areas of the UK LOE: How can we measure weather? Stage 3: Measuring the weather Hypothesis: Measuring the weather is a complex task LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe and explain how weather is measured
3 BRONZE: Identify a range of instruments used to measure the weather SILVER: Explain how a range of instruments are used to measure weather GOLD: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a range of weather instruments Stage 4: Microclimate investigation Week 3 LOE: How does the microclimate vary across Kings Warrington? Stage 5-6: Microclimate investigation
4 Week 4 LOE: How does the microclimate vary across Kings Warrington? Stage 5-6: Microclimate investigation Week 5 LOE: Which factors affect Britain s climate? Stage 9: Climate variations Hypothesis: There are no variations in climate across Britain LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to explain why there are climate variations across countries BRONZE List the different factors that affect Britain s climate SILVER Explain why the climate varies across Britain GOLD Compare the climate of two different areas across Britain and suggest reasons for the differences
5 Stage 10: Climate graphs Hypothesis: Bar charts are the best way to show climate on a graph LO: By the end of the lesson students will be able to create climate graphs and describe the trends found within BRONZE define what a climate graph is SILVER Create a climate graph Week 6 1 hour end of semester assessment GOLD Accurately describe the trends shown within a climate graph Stage 11: Revision for end of LC Assessment Lesson 12: End of LC Assessment Gap Analysis Reinforcement Week 7 Gap Reinforcement This end of module time will be allocated to re-teaching any gaps discovered in each individuals knowledge as a result of the assessment process
