1 Robert L. Ward Caltech MC (626) Pasadena, CA Education California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA Ph.D., Physics (expected 2009) Thesis: Length Sensing and Control for an Advanced Gravitational Wave Detector Advisor: Prof. Alan J. Weinstein King s College London / Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts M.A., Text and Performance Studies, 2002 Thesis: Didascalia and D.H. Lawrence (with distinction) Oxford University M.Sc., Computer Science, 2001 Thesis: Development and Implementation of a Logic Teaching Tool University of New Mexico B.S., Physics, 2000 (summa cum laude) London, England Oxford, England Albuquerque, NM Research Experience Graduate Research Assistant Present Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) 40m Prototype Laboratory Developed and prototyped techniques for sensing and controlling a next generation gravitational wave detector. This required knowledge of optics, mechanics, electronics, low-noise measurement techniques, real-time digital systems, modeling, and simulation. Deployed MATLAB programs on a 300 node computing cluster to search for signals of a stochastic background of gravitational waves in LIGO data. Research Assistant University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM Multiple projects, including developing numerical simulation tools for critical dynamics in microgravity experiments, developing a distributed bio-impedance analyzer for epithelial cancer diagnosis, and researching instructional efficacy of handson physics demonstrations. Researcher Summer 1999 Los Alamos National Laboratory Los Alamos, NM Explored feasibility of readout techniques for a solid-state quantum computer. Researcher Summer 1998 Boston University Boston, MA Expanded a neural network simulation to simulate neural responses to optical flows in monkey visual cortex.

2 Teaching Experience Physics Instructor Summers 2006 & 2007 Freshman Summer Institute Caltech Operated by the office of Minority Student Education, FSI is a transition assistance program for incoming Caltech freshmen. I wrote the syllabus, lectures, homework assignments, and exams. Teaching Assistant Fall 2004 & Winter 2005 Physics 76 (Atomic & Laser Physics Laboratory) Caltech Maintained the equipment, assisted the students with their experiments, and graded the students work. Co-Instructor (with Dr. Diane Rawls) Spring 2000 Follow the Leader UNM General Honors Program Splitting all work equally with Dr. Rawls, I designed this seminar discussion course for 15 students as a study on the nature and meaning of leadership. I co-wrote the syllabus, moderated discussions, and assessed the work of the students. Fellowships and Awards James B.
