Fluid Mech. surface (2010), vol. blowing 663, pp and suction c Cambridge for controlling University Press the 2010 onset of turbulence in a channel doi: /s x flow. For small-amplitude actuation, we utilize a weakly nonlinear analysis to determine base-flow modifications and assess the resulting net power balance. Receptivity analysis of the velocity fluctuations around this base flow is then employed to design thecontrolling travelling waves. Our the simulation-free onset of approach turbulence reveals that, relative to the flow with no bycontrol, streamwise the downstream travelling waves waves. with properly designed speed and frequency can significantly reduce receptivity, which makes them well suited for controlling Part 2. the Direct onset of turbulence. numerical In contrast, simulation the velocity fluctuations around the upstream travelling waves exhibit larger receptivity to disturbances.
