NONLINEAR HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATIONS WITH MEMORY: PHYSICAL MEANING AND ANALYTICAL RESULTS PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA arxiv: v1 math-ph] May 16 Abstract. We stuy nonlinear heat conuction equations with memory effects within the framework of the fractional calculus approach to the generalize Maxwell Cattaneo law. Our main aim is to erive the governing equations of heat propagation consiering both the empirical temperature epenence of the thermal conuctivity coefficient (which introuces nonlinearity) an memory effects accoring to the general theory of Gurtin an Pipkin of finite velocity thermal propagation with memory. In this framework we consier in etail two ifferent approaches to the generalize Maxwell Cattaneo law base on the application of long tail Mittag Leffler memory function an power law relaxation functions leaing to nonlinear time fractional telegraph an wave type equations. We also iscuss some explicit analytical results to the moel equations base on the generalize separating variable metho an iscuss their meaning in relation to some well known results of the orinary case. 1. Introuction It is well known that the classical heat equation arises from the energy balance law (1.1) ρc T t = q where ρ an c are the meium mass ensity an the meium specific heat respectively together with the Fourier law of heat conuction T (1.) q = k T where k T is the thermal conuctivity. The obtaine equation even if wiely use in ifferent fiels of the applie science has the unrealistic feature to imply an infinite spee of heat propagation. Different attempts to generalize the classical Fourier law have been consiere in the literature in orer to avoi this unphysical paraox. The first relevant generalization erive by Cattaneo in 3] is base on the following moification of the Fourier law of heat conuction (1.3) τ q t + q = k T T that after substitution in (1.1) leas to the so calle telegraph equation ] (1.4) τ T t + T t = k T T ρc = D T. 2 PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA The relate physical picture is escribe by the so calle extene irreversible thermoynamics 11]. For completeness we observe that (1.3) is also name in literature Maxwell Cattaneo law as it was firstly consiere by Maxwell an also Cattaneo Vernotte law since Vernotte in ] consiere the paraox of infinite spee of propagation at the same time of Cattaneo. A heuristic explanation of equation (1.3) as a suitable moification of the classical heat flux law is given by the iea that inertial effects shoul be consiere in moels of heat conuction since the heat flux oes not epen instantaneously on the temperature graient at one point an therefore memory effects are not negligible. In this framework a more general analysis about the role of memory effects in heat propagation was then iscusse in the classical paper of Gurtin an Pipkin 9]. In this paper the relation between the flux an the graient of the temperature fiel is given by t ( ) T (1.5) q(x t) = k T K(t τ) (x τ)τ. This equation escribes a general heat flux history moel epening by the particular choice of the relaxation kernel K(t). In the case of K(t) = 1/τ K r /θ r exp t ] we τ recover the Maxwell Cattaneo law. Again in 9] it was shown that the linearize constitutive equation for heat propagation base on equation (1.5) is given by (1.6) c T t + β() T t + = K() T + β (s) T (x t s)s t K (s) T (x t s)s where β(t) is the energy relaxation function. Assuming that β(t) this equation is relate to finite spee of propagation equal to v = K()/c. We call the family of equations (1.6) epening by the particular relaxation kernel a telegraph-type equation with memory. We consier also the temperature epenence of the thermal conuctivity coefficient k T in moels of heat propagation with memory effects. In particular we assume that (see e.g. ]) k T (T ) k T γ γ 1. This assumption typically leas to a ifferent approach to the problem of finite velocity of heat propagation i.e. the application of nonlinear parabolic equation. It is possible to consier both the physical effects namely memory an nonlinearity in the heat propagation problem leaing therefore to the nonlinear heat equation with memory (1.7) ρc T t = k t ( )] T K(t τ) T γ (x τ)τ. From now on we will take for simplicity k = ρ = c = 1. In the pioneering papers by Compte an Metzler 4 14] an then in the framework of the so calle fractional thermoelasticity 17] ifferent interesting generalizations of the heat equation have been stuie on the basis of physical an probabilistic
NONLINEAR HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATIONS WITH MEMORY 3 erivations within the general theory of Gurtin an Pipkin of heat conuction with memory. In the present paper we consier two interesting cases corresponing to particular specializations of the relaxation kernel in equation (1.7). The first one is base on the application of a Mittag Leffler relaxation function leaing to a nonlinear generalize telegraph-type equation. The secon case is relate to the choice of a power-law relaxation function an leas to nonlinear fractional wave-type equation. We are able to solve the moel equations in a simple analytic form by a generalize separating variable metho in some particular interesting cases.. Nonlinear fractional telegraph equation In this section we stuy two classes of equations belonging to the family (1.7). The first one correspons to a fractional Cattaneo law introuce by Compte an Metzler in 4] presenting a long-time Mittag-Leffler relaxation function. The secon one correspons to the the choice of a power law ecaying relaxation function recently iscusse by Povstenko 17]..1. Mittag Leffler relaxation function. As introuce in Section 1 the Cattaneo law can be erive in the framework of the general theory of Gurtin an Pipkin 9] by consiering an exponential relaxation kernel. This correspons to a short tail memory relaxation function. A first heuristic generalization of the Cattaneo law in the framework of the fractional calculus is base on the replacement of the exponential function with a Mittag Leffler relaxation function which correspons to a long tail memory relaxation function accoring to the literature (see e.g. 17]). Inee it is well known that the one parameter Mittag Leffler function x k (.1) E α1 (x) = Γ(αk + 1) k= presents a power-law asymptotic slow ecay (for a complete review about this topic we refer to the recent monograph 8]). By simple calculations Compte an Metzler 4] have shown that the generalize Cattaneo law obtaine from the following relationship (.) q(x t) = t E ν1 ( (t τ)ν λ ν ) T τ leas to the generalize telegraph equation ( ) ν (.3) + λν T (x t) = T t t ν where λ plays the role of a relaxation time constant coefficient. Moreover a probabilistic erivation of such moel in the framework of the continuous time ranom walk (CTRW) have been iscusse. The probabilistic analysis of the fractional telegraph type equations has been evelope also in ] an 5]. For physical applications in the theory of thermoelasticity we refer to 17]. Consiering
4 PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA the temperature epenence of the iffusion coefficient an accoring to the previous analysis the following nonlinear fractional telegraph equation is obtaine ( ) ν (.4) + λν T (x t) = t t ν T γ T γ >. This kin of equation has never been stuie nor in the physical neither in the mathematical literature espite the recent interest for the applications of fractional calculus in the problems of nonlinear heat conuction (we refer for example to 1] an references therein). We unerline the physical meaning of the moel equation (.4) since two ifferent physical effects are taken into account: (i) long-memory effects by means of a particular choice of the relaxation function in the Gurtin-Pipkin theory an (ii) nonlinearity ue to the empirical epenence of the heat conuction coefficient. We unerline that in many cases these two contributions are not taken into account at the same time (see e.g ]). Usually the nonlinear theory for heat conuction is consiere as an alternative to the Cattaneo approach to avoi the paraox of infinite spee of heat propagation (see e.g. ]). In the fiel of fractional calculus this new physically motivate generalization of the telegraph equation opens new interesting problems both from the mathematical an the more applie point of view. We observe that in rigorous terms only in recent papers (e.g. 1]) the existence problem of the solution of semilinear time fractional wave equations have been consiere while for the nonlinear telegraph equation (.4) no results are present. Here our aim is to introuce the problem from a physical point of view an iscuss some particular cases in which this equation amits explicit solutions by means of the generalize separation of variables metho 6 16]. In particular we consier two classes of exact solutions amitte by (.4) generalizing some results reporte in the hanbook of Polyanin ( pag.48-49]). Proposition.1. For any γ 1 equation (.4) amits a solution of the form (.5) T (x t) = (x + C ) 1 1+γ (C1 t E ν ( λ ν t ν ) + C ) where C 1 an C are arbitrary constants epening by the initial conitions. Proof. Equation (.4) amits a solution of the form (.6) T (x t) = (x + C ) 1 1+γ f(t). Inee by simple calculations we have that the operator (.7) F T T ] T = T γ T is such that F (x + C ) 1 1+γ ] =. Therefore by substituting (.6) in (.4) we obtain ( ) ν (.8) + λν f(t) = t t ν
NONLINEAR HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATIONS WITH MEMORY 5 Figure 1. Plot of the solution T (x t) in nonimensional variables for ifferent times taking C 1 = C = λ = γ = 1 an ν =.5. whose solution is given by (see 13] Theorem 5. pag. 86) (.9) f(t) = C 1 t E ν ( λ ν t ν ) + C as claime. Remark.. We recall that for ν = 1 the function (.9) becomes ( ) 1 e λt (.1) f(t) = C 1 t E 1 ( λt) + C = C 1 t + C λt an therefore we recover the result reporte in 16]. Observe also that the solution (.5) correspons to an initial atum T (x ) = C (x + C ) 1 1+γ whose evolution grows in time accoring to f(t). We present in Fig.1 the profile of the solution in nonimensional variables at ifferent times showing the growth in time of the initial atum. We now present a secon result whose proof is base on a simple application of the invariant subspace metho (see 6 7] an the Appenix) to the nonlinear fractional equation (.4). Proposition.3. Equation (.4) amits as a solution the function (.11) T (x t) = (x + C) /γ u(t) where C is an arbitrary constant an u(t) solves the fractional ifferential equation ( ) ν (γ + ) (.1) + λν u(t) = u γ+1. t t ν γ Proof. The operator F ] in (.7) is invariant uner the function (x + C) /γ. Inee F (x + C) /γ ] = (γ + ) γ (x + C) /γ.
6 PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA Accoring to the invariant subspace metho (see the Appenix) we can look for a solution of the form (.13) T (x t) = u(t)(x + C) /γ. By substituting (.13) in (.4) we obtain the claime result. The main ifficulty for this secon class of solutions is to solve exactly the nonlinear fractional equation (.1). This non-trivial problem can not be simply hanle by analytical methos except for the case γ = 1 that leas to a simple linear fractional equation whose solution is well-known (see 13]). With the following proposition we provie a more general result by introucing an a hoc non homogeneous term parametrizing a space-time epenent source term in the heat equation. Proposition.4. Assume the source term given by (.14) g(x t) = ν ( ) ] ν 1 Γ( ν 1/γ ( + 1) 1 λ ν γ 1 x γ γ t Γ( ν + ν 1) (1 + ) γ γ γ Then the generalize nonlinear Cattaneo equation with source ( ) ν (.15) + λν T (x t) = t t ν T γ T + g(x t) γ > ν ( 1) amits as a solution (.16) T (x t) = λ ν ] Γ( ν 1/γ ( + 1) γ 1 x Γ( ν + ν 1) (1 + ) γ γ γ t ν ) 1/γ. t ν ) 1/γ. Proof. Let us consier the following ansatz on the solution of the equation (.15) (.17) T (x t) = f(t)x /γ. This assumption is motivate by the fact that the l.h.s. term of equation (.15) (acting on the x variable) is invariant (see 6]) for the function x /γ in the sense that if we call F T T ] T = T γ T + g(x t) we have that ( F x /γ ] = x /γ 1 + ) + C ] γ γ t ν γ where ] Γ( ν 1/γ + 1) C = λ ν γ 1 Γ( ν + ν 1) (1 + ). γ γ γ Then by substituting (.17) in (.15) we are able to fin the unknown function f(t) by solving the nonlinear orinary fractional ifferential equation ] ν (.18) + λν f(t) = ( ) + γ f γ+1 + C ν ( ) ν 1 t ν t t ν γ. γ γ γ γ
NONLINEAR HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATIONS WITH MEMORY 7 We search a solution to (.18) of the form an by using the following property (.19) ν t ν tβ = f(t) C 1 t β Γ(β + 1) Γ(β + 1 ν) tβ ν for β ( 1 ) ( ) (see 13]) we obtain (.16). Remark.5. We observe that by means of the invariant subspace metho (see 6] an Appenix for more etails) it is possible to prove that equation (.4) for particular choices of the power γ amits solutions in subspaces of imension or 3. In particular for γ = 1 equation (.4) amits the subspace W 3 =< 1 x x > i.e. a solution of the form T (x t) = f(t)x +g(t)x+h(t) where the functions f(t) g(t) an h(t) solve the following system of couple nonlinear fractional ifferential equations ( ) ν + λν f = 6f t t ( ν ) (.) ( t ν + λν t ν ν + λν t t ν g = 6fg ) h = g + hf. We stress that also in this case the system (.) is har to be hanle by means of analytical methos... Power law relaxation function. We now consier as a secon interesting case still in the framework of the fractional calculus approach to nonlinear heat propagation with memory the case in which the relaxation kernel in (1.5) is given by (.1) K(t) t ν ν ( 1). Γ(ν) The choice (.1) correspons to a generalize Cattaneo law iscusse by Povstenko in 17]. In this case we obtain the following generalize heat equation T (.) t = 1 t (t τ) ν Γ(ν) T γ T ] (x τ)τ = Jt ν T γ T ] where Jt ν 13]) is the fractional Riemann-Liouville integral 13]. Recalling that (see e.g. ν (.3) t J ν ν t f(x t) = f(x t) an applying the fractional erivative in the sense of Caputo 13] to both terms of the equality we obtain ν T (.4) t ν t = T γ T. Observe that the overall orer 1 + ν of the time erivative belongs to (1 ]. This means that (.4) is essentially a nonlinear super iffusion equation 15].
8 PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA We firstly concentrate our attention to the case γ = 1 in (.4). It is well-known that the nonlinear iffusion equation T (.5) t = ( T m T ) has funamental solution given by (see e.g. ] pag.8 an references therein) ( ) ] 1/m 1 x 1 if x λr (.6) T (x t) = λ(t) λ(t)r if x > λr where (.7) ( t λ(t) = t ) 1 +m (.8) (.9) t = mr (m + ) Γ(1/m + 3/) r =. πγ(1/m + 1) We now observe that it is possible to built a similar solution also for the superiffusive non-linear equation (.4) in the case γ = 1 (corresponing to m = 1 in (.5)). Note that the Barenblatt solution (.6) for m = 1 simply becomes ( ) ] 1 x 1 if x λr (.3) T (x t) = λ(t) λ(t)r if x > λr then on the basis of this simple structure in terms of invariant subspaces we can affirm that the equation (.5) amits the invariant subspace W :< 1 x >. In analogy we search a solution of the equation (.4) for γ = 1 in the same subspace i.e. a solution of the form (.31) T (x t) = a(t) + b(t)x. Substituting (.31) in (.4) for γ = 1 we obtain that the functions a(t) an b(t) shoul satisfy the following system of fractional ifferential equations ν (.3) t ν t a = ab ν t ν t b = 6b. Unfortunately we are not able to solve analytically system (.3) an therefore it is not possible to give an explicit comparison with the result (.6). We only prove that the fractionl equation (.4) amits a solution in the invariant subspace W =< 1 x > whose time evoluion is governe by the functions a(t) an b(t) satisfying the system (.3). In the more general case i.e. for any γ we have the following result
NONLINEAR HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATIONS WITH MEMORY 9 Proposition.6. The nonlinear time fractional wave type equation (.4) amits as a solution ) 1/γ (.33) T (x t) = (K x where K = with < γ ν < 1 an γ >. γ ( 1 γ + 1 ) t ν+1 Γ(1 1+ν ) ] γ Γ( ν 1+ν ) γ The proof is essentially base on the same calculations of the case of Proposition 3.1 with the aitive constraints γ +ν < 1 in orer to make the constant K a positive real coefficient. 3. Conclusions In this paper two ifferent generalizations of the Cattaneo law have been stuie within a fractional calculus approach. The focus of our analysis is that of consiering both nonlinear an memory effects in the formulation of the governing equations of heat conuction. The physical motivations erive from the so calle paraox of infinite spee of heat propagation. We have introuce these effects by consiering two classes of equations generalizing the Cattaneo law formerly stuie in ] an the temperature epenence of the thermal conuctivity coefficient. In particular we have consiere two memory flux laws corresponing to a long tail memory an a power law ecaying relaxation memory. We have foun exact results base on generalize separating variables for the moel equations. Much work shoul be one about well poseness an characterization of the solutions of non linear time fractional telegraph an wave equations. Inee these two classes of non linear equations as far as we now have not yet been consiere in the literature. 4. Appenix The fact that equation (.15) amits polynomial solutions with separate variables is not surprising. In fact the same result can be obtaine from the Invariant Subspace Metho introuce by Galaktionov 6] which allows to solve exactly nonlinear equations by separating variables. We recall the main iea of this metho: consier a scalar evolution equation (4.1) u t = F u u... where u = u(x t) an F ] is a nonlinear ifferential operator. Given n linearly inepenent functions f 1 (x) f (x)... f n (x) we call W n the n-imensional linear space ] W n = f 1 (x)... f n (x).
1 PIETRO ARTALE HARRIS 1 AND ROBERTO GARRA This space is calle invariant uner the given operator F u] if F y] W n for any y W n. This means that there exist n functions Φ 1 Φ... Φ n such that F C 1 f 1 (x) +...C n f n (x)] = Φ 1 (C 1... C n )f 1 (x) Φ n (C 1... C n )f n (x) where C 1 C... C n are arbitrary constants. Once the set of functions f i (x) that form the invariant subspace has been etermine we can search an exact solution of (4.1) in the invariant subspace in the form (4.) u(x t) = n u i (t)f i (x). i=1 where f i (x) W n. In this way we arrive to a system of ODEs. In many cases this problem is simpler than the original one an allows to fin exact solutions by just separating variables 6]. We refer to the monograph 6] for further etails an applications of this metho. Recent applications of the invariant subspace metho to fin explicit solutions for nonlinear fractional ifferential equations have been iscusse in ifferent papers for example in ]. References 1] P.
