SOME RATIONAL VERTEX ALGEBRAS Dražen Adamović arxiv:q-alg/950205v2 2 Sep 998 Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia Abstract. Let L((n 3 2 Λ 0, n N, be a vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight module L((n 3 2 Λ 0 for a symplectic affine Lie algebra. We find a complete set of irreducible modules for L((n 3 2 Λ 0 and show that every module for L((n 3 2 Λ 0 from the category O is completely reducible. 0. Introduction Let g be a type one affine Lie algebra. Then the irreducible highest weight g module L(Λ 0 has a natural vertex operator algebra structure for every C, g. When is a positive integer, then the vertex operator algebra L(Λ 0 is rational and its irreducible modules are integrable highest weight modules of level (cf. [DL], [MP], [FZ]. In this paper we will consider the case of a symplectic affine Lie algebra of the type C ( l and the corresponding vertex operator algebra L((n 3 2 Λ 0, n N. We give the description of two sets of admissible weights S n and S2 n and prove that L(λ, λ S n Sn 2, are irreducible L((n 3 2 Λ 0 modules (cf. Section 2 and 3. Next, we prove that irreducible L((n 3 2 Λ 0 modules are in one-to-one correspondence with zeros of the set of polynomials P 0,l (Section 4. By using this correspondence we show that the set {L(λ λ S n S2} n gives a complete list of irreducible L((n 3 2 Λ 0 modules. The classification of irreducible L((n 3 2 Λ 0 modules implies that every L((n 3 2 Λ 0 module from the category O is completely reducible (cf. Section 6. It turns out that representations of the vertex operator algebra L((n 3 2 Λ 0 are in some respects quite similar to the integrable highest weight representations. The author expresses the thans to M.Primc for suggesting to him the study of this problem and for helpful discussions and valuble comments.. Let A = A + A 2. The Weyl algebra W(A is the associative algebra over C generated by A and relations [a i,a j ] = [a i,a j] = 0, [a i,a i] = δ i,j, i,j {,2,...,l}. Define the normal ordering on A by :xy: = 2 (xy +yx x,y A. Then (cf. [B] and [FF] all such elements : xy : span a Lie algebra isomorphic to g = sp 2l (C with a Cartan subalgebra h spanned by h i = : a i a i : i =,2,...,l. Let {ǫ i i l} h be the dual basis such that ǫ i (h j = δ i,j. The root system of g is given by = {±(ǫ i ±ǫ j,±2ǫ i i,j l,i < j} with α = ǫ ǫ 2,...,α l = ǫ l ǫ l, α l = 2ǫ l being a set of simple roots. The highest root is θ = 2ǫ. Let g = n + h + n + be the corresponding triangular decomposition. We fix the root vectors : X ǫi ǫ j = :a i a j :, X ǫ i +ǫ j = :a i a j :, X (ǫi +ǫ j = :a i a j :. 2. Some admissible weights Let R (resp R + h be the set of real (resp positive real coroots of g. Fix λ h. Let R λ = {α R λ,α Z}, R λ + = Rλ R +, Π the set of simple coroots in R and Π λ = {α R λ + α not equal to a sum of several roots from R λ +}. Define ρ in the usual way. Recall that a weight λ h is called admissible (cf. [KW 2] if the following properties are satisfied : ( λ+ρ,α / Z + for all α R +, (2 QR λ = QΠ. Let M(λ denote the Verma module with the highest weight λ, M (λ its maximal submodule and L(λ its irreducible quotient. First let us recall some results of V.Kac and M.Waimoto that we shall use: Theorem. (Kac Waimoto, Cor. 2.. in [KW ] Let λ be an admissible weight. Then M(λ L(λ = α Π U(gv α, λ where v α M(λ is a singular vector of weight r α.λ, the highest weight vector of M(r α.λ = U(gv α M(λ.
SOME RATIONAL VERTEX ALGEBRAS 3 Theorem 2. (Kac Waimoto, Theorem 4. in [KW 2] Let V be a g modul from the category O such that for any irreducible subquotient L(µ the weight µ is admissible. Then g modul V is completely reducible. Denote by P + the set of all dominant integral weights. Theorem 3. (Kac Waimoto, Cor.4. in [KW 2] Let Λ P + and λ be an admissible weight. Then the g modul L(Λ L(λ decomposes into a dirtect sum of irreducible g modules L(µ with µ admissible highest weight and R µ = R λ. Let Π = {α 0,...,α l }, c = α 0 + +α l and set Π = {2c (h +h 2,h h 2,...,h l h l,h l } = {2α 0 +α,α,...,α l }, Π 2 = {c h,h h 2,...,h l h l,h l +h l } = {α 0,...,α l,α l +2α l }. Let S i denote the set of all admissible λ with Π λ = Π i, i =,2. Lemma 4. Let λ S i, i =,2. Then Proof. For λ S we have λ,c = n 3 2 for some n N. λ+ρ,2α 0 +α = λ,2α 0 +α +3 = λ,2α 0 +2α + 2α l λ,α 0 +2α + 2α l +3 > 0. This implies λ,c > 3 2 and we see that λ,c 3 +N. Similary we prove the 2 case i=2. Let S n i = {λ S i λ,c = n 3 2 } i =,2, P + = {λ P + λ,c = } = {Λ 0,...,Λ l }. Then S i = n N S n i. We give a description of S n and Sn 2 for n N : Proposition 5. ( (2 S = { 2 Λ 0, 3 2 Λ 0 +Λ }, S n+ = {S n +P +} { (n+ 3 2 Λ 0 +(2n+Λ }, n N; S 2 = { 2 Λ l, 3 2 Λ l +Λ l }, S n+ 2 = {S n 2 +P + } { (n+ 3 2 Λ l +(2n+Λ l }, n N. Proof. We can directly obtain the description of the set S. By the definition of sets S n i we have {S n +P+} S n+ and (n+ 3 2 Λ 0 +(2n+Λ S n+. Let λ S n+, λ (n+ 3 2 Λ 0 +(2n+Λ. Then λ,α 0 = (n m+ 2, for m Z +. Since λ+ρ,2α 0 +α > 0 we have λ,α (2(n m, and this implies λ = (n m+ 2 Λ 0 +(2(n m Λ +Λ ( + +Λ (m+ where Λ (i P+, i =,...,m+. We have obtained and ( holds. λ S (n m +P + + +P + S n +P +
4 DRAŽEN ADAMOVIĆ 3. Modules for Vertex operator algebra L((n 3 2 Λ 0 We now that the generalized Verma module N(Λ 0 with the highest weight Λ 0, C, is a vertex operator algebra if g (here g denotes the dual Coxeter number. The irreducible quotient L(Λ 0 of N(Λ 0 is also a vertex operator algebra (see [FLM], [FgF],[DL], [FZ] and [MP]. As usual we shall denote by Y(w,z = m Z w mz m the vertex operator (or the field of the vector w. Let V be a g module of level, g from the category O (or a highest weight module and let X(z = Y(X(,z = m ZX(mz m, X g, be the family of fields acting on V defined by the action of X(m g. By Theorem 4.3 in [MP] or Theorem 2.4. in [FZ] there is a unique extension of these fields that mae V into a module over the vertex operator algebra N(Λ 0. Hence we may identify g modules of level in the category O with the N(Λ 0 modules in the category O. Moreover, ifi isanideal ofthevertexoperatoralgebra N(Λ 0, then ag module from the category O is a module of the vertex operator algebra N(Λ 0 /I if and only if Y(w,zV = 0 for all w I (or equivalently, for all generators w of the ideal I (cf. Corrollary 3.2 and Proposition 4.2 below. We will find all irreducible representations of the vertex operator algebras L((n 3 2 Λ 0, n N, associated to the symplectic algebra C ( l. Put λ n = (n 3 2 Λ 0. Then λ n is an admissible weight with Π λ n = Π. Put γ 0 = δ (ǫ +ǫ 2. It is easy to show that γ0 = 2α 0 +α. Then we have: r γ0.λ n = λ n 2nγ 0, r αi.λ n = λ n α i, i =,2,...,l. By we denote a highest weight vector in N(λ n. Theorem. The maximal submodule of N(λ n is N (λ n = U(gv n, where v n = (X ǫ +ǫ 2 ( 2 X 2ǫ ( X 2ǫ2 ( n, n N. Proof. It can be checed by a direct calculation that v n is a singular vector of weight λ n 2nγ 0. Since v α i = X αi (0 = 0 for i =,2,...,l, we conclude from Theorem 2. that v n generates the maximal submodule N (λ n. Clearly we have Y(v n,z = (X ǫ +ǫ 2 (z 2 X 2ǫ (zx 2ǫ2 (z n.
SOME RATIONAL VERTEX ALGEBRAS 5 Corollary 2. Let V be g module from the category O of level n 3 2. Then if and only if V is L(λ n module. (X ǫ +ǫ 2 (z 2 X 2ǫ (zx 2ǫ2 (z n = 0 on V A.Feingold and I.Frenel gave the bosonic construction (see [FF] of four irreducible g modules of level 2 : L(µ,L(µ 2,L(µ 3,L(µ 4 where µ = 2 Λ 0, µ 2 = 3 2 Λ 0 +Λ, µ 3 = 2 Λ l, µ 4 = 3 2 Λ l +Λ l. By using Lemma 7 in [FF] and the explicit construction (Theorem A in [FF] we obtain: Proposition 3. On L(µ i, i =,2,3,4, we have X ǫ +ǫ 2 (z 2 X 2ǫ (zx 2ǫ2 (z = 0. Theorem 4. Let V(n 3 2 be an irreducible L(λ n module and V( an irreducible L(Λ 0 module. Then V(n 3 2 V( is a L(λ n+ module. Proof. By Theorem 2.2 vector L(λ n L(Λ 0 generates the submodule isomorphic to L(λ n+. It is easy to show that L(λ n+ is a subalgebra of the vertex operator algebra L(λ n L(Λ 0 in the sense of [FZ]. Since V(n 3 2 V( is a module for L(λ n L(Λ 0 (cf. Proposition 0. in [DL] it is also a module for L(λ n+. Remar. The Theorem 4 can also be proved by using Corrolary 2 and the vertex operator formula for integrable highest weight representations (cf. [LP], Proposition 5.5. Lemma 5. Let λ S n Sn 2. Then L(λ is a L(λ n modul. Proof. Induction on n N. For n = we have S S 2 = {µ,µ 2,µ 3,µ 4 }. Then L(µ i, i =,2,3,4 are L( 2 Λ 0 modules by Proposition 3. First notice that L(Λ for Λ P+ is a L(Λ 0 module (cf. [FZ], [DL], [MP]. Assume that L(λ is a L(λ n modul for all λ S n Sn 2 If λ = λ 0 +Λ, λ 0 S n Sn 2, Λ P +, then L(λ 0 L(Λ is a L(λ n+ module by Theorem 4. Since v λ0 v Λ is a singular vector of weight λ 0 +Λ, by Theorem 2.2 it generates the submodule isomorphic to L(λ and L(λ is a L(λ n+ module. Let λ = (n Λ 0 + (2n + Λ. Put µ = (n + 2 Λ 0 + (2n Λ. Then L(µ L(Λ 0 is a L(λ n+ module. Since v = 2X 2ǫ ( v µ v Λ0 +(2n+v µ X 2ǫ ( v Λ0. Let λ Sn+ S n+ 2. is a singular vector in L(µ L(Λ 0 of weight λ δ, it generates the submodule isomorphic to L(λ. Let λ = (n+ 3 2 Λ l+(2n+λ l. Put ν = (n+ 2 Λ l+(2n Λ l. Then L(ν L(Λ l is a L(λ n+ modul. Since v = 2X 2ǫl (0v ν v Λl +(2n+v ν X 2ǫl (0v Λl is a singular vector in L(ν L(Λ l, it generates the submodule isomorphic to L(λ. Remar. It follows from Lemma 5 that L(λ, λ S n Sn 2, is an irreducible L(λ n module. In what follows we prove that these are all irreducible L(λ n modules (cf.

Set W = j ZW(j, W(j = C span {w(j w U( gv n }. By using the commutator formula for vertex operators we get (cf. [MP] the following: Proposition. W is a loop module under the adjoint action of g. In particular, [X(i,w(j]= (X.w(i+j for X g, w U( gv n, i,j Z. ThenW(0isafinitedimensional g modulewiththehighestweight 2n(ǫ +ǫ 2 = 2n ω 2. By W(0 0 denote the zero-weight subspace of W(0. Proposition 2. Let V be an irreducible highest weight module of level n 3 2 with the highest weight vector v λ. The following statements are equivalent : ( V is a L(λ n module; (2 WV = 0 ; (3 W(0 0 v λ = 0. Proof. The equivalence of ( and (2 was already discussed in the introduction of Section 3. Clearly (2 implies (3. For the converse first notice that by assumption V = M(λ/M (λ. Hence to see (2 it is enough to see WM(λ M (λ, i.e. WM(λ M(λ (since WM(λ is a submodule, and M (λ is the maximal submodule. Since WM(λ = WU(n v λ = U(n Wv λ, we have WM(λ M(λ iff v λ WM(λ iff W(0 0 v λ = 0. Let u W(0 0. Clearly there exists the uniqe polynomial p u S( h such that uv λ = p u (λv λ.
