4 C H A P T E R Linear Equations and Vectors 1 Mathematics is, of course, a discipline in its own right. It is, however, more than that it is a tool used in many other fields. In this course the reader will learn mathematics, will learn to think mathematically, and will be instructed in the art of applying mathematics. The course is a blend of theory, numerical techniques, and interesting applications. When mathematics is used to solve a problem it often becomes necessary to find a solution to a so-called system of linear equations. Historically, linear algebra developed from studying methods for solving such equations.
