NON-COMMUTATIVE CALLEBAUT INEQUALITY arxiv:.3003v [ath.fa] 3 Dec 0 MOHAMMAD SAL MOSLEHIAN, JAGJIT SINGH MATHARU AND JASPAL SINGH AUJLA 3 Abstract. We present an operator version of the Callebaut inequality involving the interpolation paths and apply it to the weighted operator geoetric eans. We also establish a atrix version of the Callebaut inequality and as a consequence obtain an inequality including the Hadaard product of atrices.. Introduction and Preliinaries Let BH denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators acting on a coplex Hilbert space H,, and let I be the identity operator. In the case when di H = n, we identify BH with the full atrix algebra M n C of all n n atrices with entries in the coplex field and denote its identity by I n. The cone of positive operators is denoted by BH +. We also denote the set of all invertible positive operators positive definite atrices, resp. by P P n, resp.. The axioatic theory for operator eans for positive operators acting on Hilbert space operators was established by Kubo and Ando [4]. A binary operation σ : BH + BH + BH + is called an operator ean provided that i IσI = I; ii C AσBC C ACσC BC; iii A n A and B n B iply A n σb n AσB, where A n A eans that A A and A n A as n in the strong operator topology; iv A B & C D = AσC BσD.. 00 Matheatics Subject Classification. 2 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, J.S. MATHARU, J.S. AUJLA It follows fro the general theory of eans [6, Theore 5.7] that A j σb j A j σ B j.. There exists an affine order isoorphis between the class of operator eans and the class of positive onotone operator functions f defined on [0, with f = via fti = IσtI t 0. In addition, AσB = A / fa / BA / A /. The operator onotone functionf iscalledtherepresenting function ofσ. UsingaliitarguentbyA ε = A+εI,one can extend the definition of AσB to positive operatorspositive seidefinite atrices as well. Thedualσ ofanoperatoreanσwiththerepresentingfunctionf istheoperatoreanwith representing function t/ft. So that Aσ B = A / A / BA / fa / BA / A /. The operator eans corresponding to the positive operator onotone functions f t = t /,f p t = t p 0 p are the operator geoetric ean A B = A A BA and the operator weighted geoetric ean A p B = A A BA pa. A For an operator ean σ satisfying AσB = BσA a paraetrized operator ean σ t is called an interpolational path for σ see [6, Section 5.3] and [8] if it satisfies Aσ 0 B = A, Aσ / B = AσB and Aσ B = B; Aσ p BσAσ q B = Aσ p+q/ B, for all p,q [0,]; 3 the ap t Aσ t B is nor continuous for each A,B. It is easy to see that the set of all r [0,] satisfying Aσ p Bσ r Aσ q B = Aσ rp+ rq B..3 for all p,q is a convex subset of [0,] including 0 and. Therefore.3 is valid for all p,q,r [0,], cf. [8, Lea ]. The power eans A r B = A / +A / BA / r / /r A / r [, ] are typical exaples of interpolational eans, whose interpolational paths, by [6, Theore 5.4], are A r,t B = A t+t A r r BA A t [0,]..4 One of the fundaental inequalities in atheatics is the Cauchy Schwarz inequality. There are any generalizations and applications of this inequality; see the onograph[4]. There are soe Cauchy Schwarz type inequalities for Hilbert space operators and atrices involving
NON-COMMUTATIVE CALLEBAUT INEQUALITY 3 unitarily invariant nors given by Jocić [] and Kittaneh [3]. Morover, Niculescu [7], Joiţa [], Ilišević Varošanec [0], Moslehian Persson [6], Arabasić Bakić Moslehian [] have investigated the Cauchy Schwarz inequality and its various reverses in the fraework of C -algebras and Hilbert C -odules. An application of the covariance-variance inequality to the Cauchy Schwarz inequality was obtained by Fujii Izuino Nakaoto Seo [9]. Soe operator versions of the Cauchy Schwarz inequality with siple conditions for the case of equality are presented by Fujii [7]. In 965, Callebaut [3] gave the following refineent of the Cauchy Schwarz inequality: Given a real nuber s, non-proportional sequences of positive real nubers {a i } n i=,{b i} n i=, the function fr,s = n is increasing in 0 r. If {a i } n i=,{b i} n i= i= as+r i b s r i n i= as r i b s+r i are proportional, then this expression is independent of r. Thus one can obtain any well-ordered inequalities lying between the left and the right sides of the Cauchy Schwarz inequality. In particular, if 0 t s or s t, then a / j b / j a s j b s j a s j b s j a t j b t j a j b j a t j b t j.5 for all positive real nubers a j,b j j. This triple inequality is well-known as the Callebaut inequality. Applying Hölder s inequality, McLaughlin and Metcalf [5] obtained it in a siple fashion. The ethod of Callebaut ay be used for finding other interesting refineents of classical inequalities, see [5, ] and references therein. Wada [8] gave an operator version of the Callebaut inequality by showing that if A and B are positive operators on a Hilbert space and if σ is an operator ean, then A B A B { AσB Aσ B+Aσ B AσB } {A B+B A}. The purpose of the paper is to present soe noncoutative versions of the Callebaut inequality. More precisely, we give an operator Callebaut inequality involving the interpolation paths and apply it to the weighted operator geoetric eans. We also establish a atrix version of the Callebaut inequality and as a consequence obtain an inequality including the Hadaard product of atrices.
4 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, J.S. MATHARU, J.S. AUJLA. Callebaut inequality for Hilbert space operators Our first operator version of.5 reads as follows: Theore.. Let A j,b j P j and σ be an operator ean. Then A j B j A j σb j A j σ B j A j B j.. Furtherore, if σ t is an iterpolational path for σ such that σt = σ t, then A j σ s B j A j σ s B j A j σ t B j A j σ t B j. for s between t and t. Proof. Let f be the representing function of σ. Then AσB Aσ B = A / fa / BA / A / A / A / BA / fa / BA / A / = A / fa / BA / A / BA / fa / BA / A / = A / A / BA / / A / = A B.3 for all A,B P. It follows fro. that A j σb j A j σ B j A j σ B j A j σ B j, whence A j σb j A j σ B j A j σ B j A j σ B j by. = A j B j, by.3
NON-COMMUTATIVE CALLEBAUT INEQUALITY 5 which gives the second inequality of.. Now we prove the first inequality of.: A j σb j A j σ B j Aj σb j A j σ B j = A j B j. by.3 Next we prove.. Replacing A j and B j by A j σ t B j and A j σ t B j, respectively, in. and noting to σs = σ s we get A j σ t B j σ s A j σ t B j A j σ t B j σ s A j σ t B j A j σ t B j The first ter of the inequality above, by.3, is A j σ t B j σ s A j σ t B j A j σ t B j σ s A j σ t B j A j σ t B j. = A j σ ts+ t s B j A j σ ts+t s B j = A j σ ts+ t s B j A j σ ts+ t s B j. If s is between t and t, then there is s 0 [0,] such that s = ts 0 + t s 0. This shows that the desired inequality holds. It follows fro.4 that A 0,t B = A t B. Due to A t B = A tb, we infer that Corollary.. Let A j,b j P. Then A j B j A j s B j A j s B j Moreover, A j B j. A j s B j A j s B j A j t B j A j t B j for s between t and t.
6 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, J.S. MATHARU, J.S. AUJLA Taking positive scalars a j and b j for A j and B j, respectively, in Theore. we get Corollary.3. The classical Callebaut inequality.5 holds. 3. Callebaut inequality for atrices To achieve soe Callebaut inequalities for atrices, we need the following lea. Lea 3.. Let 0 r. Then A r +A r A+A for all A P n. Proof. Suppose that A = UΓU with unitary U and diagonal atrix Γ. Then A r +A r = UΓ r +Γ r U UΓ+Γ U = A+A since t r +t r t+t for any positive real nuber t and 0 r. Theore 3.. The function ft = A +t B t +A t B +t is decreasing on the interval [,0], increasing on the interval [0,] and attains its iniu at t = 0 for all A,B P n. Proof. Let 0 α β. Taking 0 r = α and replacing A by β Aβ B β in Lea 3., we get A α B α +A α B α A β B β +A β B β. This further iplies that A / B / A α B α +A α B α A / B / A / B / A β B β +A β B β A / B /, whence A +α B α +A α B +α A +β B β +A β B +β Note that ft = f t, so f is decreasing on the interval [,0]. The last stateent on iniu point is obvious fro the preceding ones.
Corollary 3.3. The function NON-COMMUTATIVE CALLEBAUT INEQUALITY 7 gt = A t B t +A t B t is decreasing on [0,/], increasing on [/,] and attains its iniu at t = A,B P n. for all Proof. The proof follows by replacing A,B by A /,B / in Theore 3., respectively, and then replacing +t by t. The following theore is our second version of the Callebaut inequality.5. Theore 3.4. Let A j,b j P n, j. Then A j B j A j B j A j s B j A j t B j A j A j s B j + A j t B j + B j + for 0 t s or s t. B j A j s B j A j t B j A j. Proof. In order to prove the above inequalities we first prove that the function ft = A j t B j A j t B j + A j t B j A j s B j A j t B j A j t B j isdecreasingon[0,/],increasingon[/,]andattainsitsiniuatt =. ByCorollary 3.3 the function t C t i C t j + C t i Cj t, where C j = A / j B j A / j, is decreasing on [0,/], increasing on [/,] and attains its iniu at t =. Hence the function C t A / i A / t j i C t j +Ci t Cj t A / i A / j = A i t B i A j t B j +A i t B i A j t B j
8 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, J.S. MATHARU, J.S. AUJLA is decreasing on [0,/], increasing on [/,] and attains its iniu at t =. Since A j t B j = A j t B j + i, A j t B j A j t B j A i t B i A j t B j +A i t B i A j t B j therefore the function ft is decreasing on [0,/], increasing on [/,] and attains its iniu at t =. On using the fact that f/ fs ft f, for s t, or f/ fs ft f0, for s t 0, we get the desired result. We have the following corollary as a consequence to Theore 3.4. Corollary 3.5. Let A j,b j P n, j. Then A j B j A j B j A j s B j A j s B j A j t B j A j B j A j t B j for 0 t s or s t. The next result is a consequence of Theore 3.4 with B j = I n j n. Corollary 3.6. Let A j P n, j. Then A / j A / j A t j A t j A j I n 3. for all 0 t. Acknowledgent. The authors would like to sincerely thank Professor S. Wada and the anonyous referee for carefully reading the article and useful coents.
