1 PROPOSAL TO CONDUCT ANALYSIS OF SEISMIC ACTIVITY ON THE KILAUEA EAST RIFT ZONE Submitted by: Dr. Ptrici Cper nd Dr. Greg Mre
2 Gephysics The gephysics prgrm hs the ptentil t prvide numbe r f types f infrmtin t the resurce ssessment nd reservir mngement effrt. Hwever, becuse f the Federl restrictin n prticiptin by the USGS in the Stte's getherml prgrm nd t he bsence f strng electricl gephysics grup t SOEST, nly tw types f nlyses cn be undertken in the ner term: grvity nd seismic studies f the rift systems sscited with ptentil getherml res. Grvity surveys ver the rift will enble us t better define the width f the dike cmplex within the rift nd my. give us sme indictins f hw fr wy frm the surfce expressin f the rift deep drilling culd encunter therml ' nmly. Preprtin f prpsl t cnduct seismic surveys n the islnd f Hwii is presently underwy nd will be prvided t the GTAC t lter dte. Seismic surveys my be ble t prvide structurl infrmtin n the rift znes, indictins f fluid flw within their hydrtherml systems, nd the respnse f the hydrtherml system t develpment. The current seismic prpsl will ttempt t mp cncentrtins f seismic ctivity within the rift t determine whether there is crrespndence between the ctivity nd reservir prductivity r fluid flw within the rift. The wr k will be perfrmed using publicly vilble seismic dt frm t h e existing netwrk n Kilue nd will ls btin dt frm mre densely spced rry f seismic instruments tht will be brrwed frm the Ntinl Science Fundtin. Acquisitin f current seismic ctivity dt within the rift will ls prvide infrmtin regrding typicl pre-develpment bseline seismicity with which t judge the impcts f reinjectin f getherml fluids nd pssibl y enble us t use ny chnges in seismic ctivity t trck t he mvement f reinjectte within the rift zne. The bility t perfrm the ltter culd prve very vluble in demnstrting ny ptentil fr cntmintin f shllw drinking wter supplies r, lterntively, in demnstrting tht such is nt ccurring nd hence, llying fers f cntmintin where nne exists.
3 A seprte effrt will ttempt t perfrm seismic prfiling f the rift t better define the structure f the dike cmplex. This wrk will require ccess t ne r mre deep wells n the rift tht re cpble f ccepting retrievble dwnhle gephne. Surfce seismic signls will be generted using n "irgun" tht will be detected by the subsurfce gephne. Anlysis f the signls will prvide dt tht will supprt the nlysis f nturl seismicity nd will enble us t determine whether mre sphisticted rry f dwnhle gephnes nd surfce surces culd be used t better define the structure f the rift. The wrk prpsed here will be unique pplictin f seismic nlysis t the Hwiin getherml system nd hence, we cnnt be certin tht ll f the infrmtin tht is hped fr will be btined. Hence, the wrk pln in the ttched prpsl hs ttempted t minimize csts by relying hevily n the use f equipment prvided by utside institutins. As individul spects f the wrk demnstrte their bility t prvide useful infrmtin t the Stte's getherml effrt, it is nticipted tht subsequent prpsls culd be submitted t instll permnent seismic sttins r t cnduct mre sphisticted seismic surveys f the KERZ nd ther ptentil getherml res n Hwii. Budget A detiled budget nd descriptin f the wrk t be perfrmed is ttched.
