THE ADDITIVE COMPLEMENTS OF PRIMES AND GOLDBACH S PROBLEM LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN arxv:0.653v3 [math.nt] 28 Apr 20. Introducton Frst, wentroducethenotonofaddtvecomplements. ForasetA N = {0,,2,3,...}, we say a set B N s an addtve complement of A, provded that for every suffcently large n N, there exst a A and b B such that n = a+b,.e., the sumset A+B = {a+b : a A, b B} contans all suffcently large ntegers. Furthermore, for the sets A,B N, f the sumset A + B has lower densty,.e., almost all postve ntegers n can be represented as n = a + b wth a A and n B, then we say B s an almost addtve complement of A. The addtve propertes of prmes are always one of the most fascnatng topcs n number theory. Let P denote the set of all prmes. It s natural to ask what the addtve complements of P are. By the prme number theorem, we know that Px x logx, where Ax = A [,x] for a set A N. So f A s an addtve complement of P, we must have Ax logx. Unfortunately, no one knows whether there exsts an addtve complement A of P satsfyng Ax = Ologx. However, n [2], usng the probablty method, Erdős showed that such addtve complement exsts, provded that we replace logx by logx 2. That s, there exsts a set A N wth Ax = Ologx 2 such that the sumset A+P contans every suffcently large nteger. In 998, Ruzsa [8] mproved the results of Wolke [2] and Kolountzaks[7], and showed that for every functon wx wth lm x + wx = +, there exsts an almost addtve complement A of P wth Ax = Owxlogx,.e., there exsts a set A N wth Ax = Owxlogx such that almost all postve ntegers can be represented as the sums of one element of A and a prme. In 200, Vu proved that P has an addtve complement A of order 2 wth Ax = Ologx,.e., 200 Mathematcs Subject Classfcaton. Prmary P32; Secondary 05D40, B3, N36. 2 2 LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN there exsts a set A N wth Ax = Ologx such that every suffcently large nteger n can be represented as n = a +a 2 +p, where a,a 2 A and p s a prme. Clearly Vu s result mples Erdős result, snce A+Ax Ax 2. Next, let us turn to the Goldbach problem. As early as 937, usng the crcle method, Vnogradov [0] had solved the ternary Goldbach problem and showed that every suffcently large odd nteger can be represented as the sum of three prmes. And subsequently, wth a smlar dscusson, Estermann[3] proved the bnary Goldbach problem s true for almost all postve even ntegers,.e., almost all postve even ntegers can be represented as the sums of two prmes. In ths note, we shall combne the results of Ruzsa and Vu wth Goldbach s problem. Theorem.. There exsts a set A P wth Ax = Ologx such that every suffcently large odd nteger can be represented as a +a 2 +p where a,a 2 A and p P. Theorem.2. For every functon wx wth lm x + wx = +, there exsts a set B P wth Bx = Owxlogx such that almost all even postve ntegers can be represented as b+p where b B and p P. Note that Theorems. and.2 mply Vu s and Ruzsa s results respectvely. If we set A = A A+{} and B = B B+{}, then clearly the sumset A+A+P contans all suffcently large nteger and B +P has lower densty. The proofs of Theorems. and.2 wll be gven n the next sectons. 2. Proof of the Theorem. The key of our proofs s the followng lemma. Lemma 2.. There exsts a postve constant c 0 such that f x s suffcently large, x c 0 M x and 0 y x M, then for all even ntegers n wth x n x+m, except for OMlogx 2 exceptonal values, we always have M Cn 2. logx 2 where n=p +p 2 y p y+m x y M p 2 x y+m Cn = p n p 2 and the mpled constant n 2. only depends on c 0. p n + p 2.2 Proof. Ths lemma can be proved by the method of Ja n [6], although he only dscussed the case y = x/2. In fact, Ja proved that Lemma 2. holds whenever c 0 > 7/2. Now suppose that n s a suffcently nteger. For each x P, we choose x to be n A wth the probablty x = clogx, x
THE ADDITIVE COMPLEMENTS OF PRIMES AND GOLDBACH S PROBLEM 3 where c > 0 s a constant to be chosen later. Then usng the law of large numbers, one can easly show that almost surely An = Ologn for every n, snce p n p s prme logp p logn. Let t x be the bnary random varable representng the choce of x,.e., t x = wth probablty x and 0 wth probablty x. Consder Y n = t t j. p<n +j=n p p s prme,j are prme We need to prove that there exsts n 0 > 0 satsfyng the probablty PY n > 0 for every n n 0 /2. Choose 0 < ǫ < c 0 /2 and let M = n 2ǫ, where c 0 s the one appearng n Lemma 2.. In the remander of ths secton, the mpled constants of O, and wll only depend on ǫ. Let Yn = t t j. p n n ǫ +j=n p p s prme,j M,j are prme Clearly PY n > 0 PY n > 0 for every n. The followng lemma s due to Janson [5]. Lemma 2.2. Let z,,z m be ndependent ndcator random varables and Y = Σ α I α where each I α s the product of few z j s. Defne α β f there s some z j whch s n both I α and I β. Let = α β EI αi β. For any Y and any postve number ε we have Let PY εey exp εey2. 2EY+ X = {,j :,j M, +j n ǫ and,j,n j are all prme}. Clearly, Yn = t t j = I α, α X,j X where I α = t t j for α =,j. In vew of Lemma 2.2 we only need to estmate EYn = E I α α X and = E α,β X α β I α I β.
4 LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN By Lemma 2., we have E I α =E α X Clearly, E p n n ǫ +j=n p p s prme,j M,j are prme 0 t n ǫ /M s n ǫ /M+t 2 0 t n ǫ /M s n ǫ /M+t 2 0 t n ǫ /M s n ǫ /M+t 2 n ǫ /M n ǫ /M n ǫ /M t t j E tm n n ǫ p<t+m p s prme M logm M logm 2 sm n ǫ +t+m sm n ǫ /M+t 2 n ǫ +tm 0 t n ǫ /M tm n n ǫ p<t+m p s prme +j=n p sm <s+m,j are prme t t j s n p/m 2 +j=n p sm <s+m,j are prme c 2 logm 2 sm n ǫ +t+m sm. smn ǫ +tm sm ds dt n ǫ /M+t 2 logn ǫ +tm Mn ǫ +tm dt log2n ǫ 2 M 2 sm + n ǫ +tm sm logn2 M 2. ds dt t t j Thus we get that Now we turn to. 5 THE ADDITIVE COMPLEMENTS OF PRIMES AND GOLDBACH S PROBLEM 5 For a set U of postve ntegers, by the partal summaton, we have j Ux x UM M + Uy y. 2 M j x j U Note that by the seve method, we have M j y : both j and m j are prmes p+j=n j M p,j are prme M<y x Cmy M logy M 2 Cmy logy 2 snce y/logy 2 s ncreasng for y > e, where C s the one appearng n Lemma 2.. Hence j n Cn n + logn 2 M + Cn ylogy 2 Thus, Note that Cn 2 p n Cn logm Cn logn. E α β I α I β c 3 logn M n n ǫ M+e<y n Cn = p p p p n p n where ωd denotes the number of the dstnct prme factors of d. Hence, Cn 2 2 ωd d M n n ǫ By the Brun-Ttchmarsh theorem, we know d<n n ǫ M {M y : and n mod d} M n n ǫ n mod d M n n ǫ n mod d d n y M φdlogy M/d, provded that y M.d. 6 6 LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN If d M, then loglogn/d loglogm/d loglogn loglog M. If M < d n n ǫ M/., then Thus we have log logn/d log logm/d φd d n n ǫ M/. M /2 ǫ d<n On the other hand, we have 2 ωd d d ǫ + d<n M n n ǫ n mod d d n n ǫ M/.<d n n ǫ M n n ǫ M/.<d n n ǫ M 2 ǫ nǫ 2 ωd d 2 ωd n loglogn d ǫ M /2 ǫ. d<n 2 ωd d M + /2 ǫ φd +O = O. 2.3 M/2 ǫ M n n ǫ n mod d M n n ǫ =n d n <n where τ be the dvsor functon and τd = 2 ωd f. Now τn = 2 <n k n <n <n We know that cf. [9] It follows that Thus k n <n n mod k k x n n ǫ M/.<d n n ǫ M φk logx. 2 ωd d c 3 logn. k n M n n ǫ n mod d k n k n n φklogn. τn,. 2.4
Now THE ADDITIVE COMPLEMENTS OF PRIMES AND GOLDBACH S PROBLEM 7 EY n 2 EY n n EY = + + EY n So we may choose suffcently large c such that EY n 2 EY n c2 logn + c3 logn c 2 logn + 00logn. = c2 +c logn. In vew of Lemma 2.2, we have PYn = 0 PY n 0.5EY n exp 0.5EY n 2 exp 2logn = 2EYn+ n 2. Thus choosng a suffcently large n 0, we have PY n = 0 for some n n 0 n n 0 PY n = 0 n n 0 n 2 2. Ths completes the proof of Theorem.. 3. Proof of the Theorem.2 Let c 0 be the constant appearng n Lemma 2. and c be an another fxed constant wth c 0 < c <. Lemma 3.. For every 0 < ǫ <,there s a K = Kǫ and an N 0 = N 0 ǫ such that for N > N 0 we can always fnd a set of prmes such that and the set S = P +B satsfes B [N c 0,2N c 0 ] B KlogN 3. Sx ǫx for all N c x N. 3.2 Proof. Assume that N s suffcently large. Suppose that C s the mpled constant n 2.. Let K = max { 0 6 log c 0 C ǫ 2,20}, M = N c 0 M, I = [M,2M] P, L = I = +o logm. Let B be a random subset of I such that each x I s ncluded nto B ndependently wth a probablty = KlogN 2L. And let t x be the bnary random varable representng the choce of x. Clearly E B = E t x = L = K 2 logn. Now t suffces to show that x I P3.2 holds > P B > KlogN. 3.3
8 LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN Apparently, Ee B =E exp t x = Ee tx = e 0 + e L x I x I Ke =+ e L exp e L < exp logn..9 Thus from Markov s nequalty we get P B > KlogN = Pe B > e KlogN Ee B e K logn Ke exp logn KlogN = N Ke <.9 N. Below we only need to show that P3.2 holds N. Let η = +ǫ/2 and let x j = N/η j for 0 j c logn/logη+. Clearly, for x j x x j, Sx j > ǫ/2x j mples that Sx > ǫx. So t suffces to show that Let PSx j > ǫ/2x j for all j > N. Tx = x Sx. Clearly Sx j > ǫ/2x j s equvalent to Tx j < ǫ/2x j. Let zn = n=p +p 2 p I, p 2 P and Q j = { M n x j : zn < C CnM} 3log 2 n By Lemma 2., we have Q j Q j [km,k +M] = M O logkm 2 k x j /M k x j /M xj = O. logm 2 For a gven n [2M,x j ]\Q j, we have n S only f none of those zn prmes s n B. The probablty of ths event s We have snce zn KlogN 2L {p I : n p s prme} Pn S = zn exp zn. Cn C M Cn 3log 2 n C CnKM 6LlogN C c 0 K, 0 p 3 s prme p 2 > 0.6.
THE ADDITIVE COMPLEMENTS OF PRIMES AND GOLDBACH S PROBLEM 9 Hence Pn S exp 0.c 0 C K. 3.4 Thus the expectaton of Tx j satsfes ETx j exp 0.c 0 C Kx j +2M +Ox j logm 2 2exp 0.c 0 C Kx j, 3.5 by notng that x j N c. From Markov s nequalty, we can nfer PTx j ǫ/2x j ETx j ǫ/2x j < 4 ǫ exp 0.c 0C K η, 3.6 snce K 0 c 0 C log 4 ǫ η. 3.7 So lettng J = c logn/logη +, we have J PSx j > ǫ/2x j for all j PSx j > ǫ/2x j η J η 2 N c N, j=0 where α = max{z Z : z α}. Thus the proof of Lemma 3. s complete. 3.8 Lemma 3.2. For every ǫ > 0, let K = Kǫ and N 0 = N 0 ǫ be the ones defned n Lemma 3.. Then there exsts a set B P such that for every x > N 0, we have 2K Bx c 0 c c logx and the sumset S = P +B satsfes Sx ǫx. Proof. Defne N + = [N /c ]+ for 0. Applyng Lemma 3. to each N = N, we get a set B [N c 0,2N c 0 ] wth B KlogN satsfyng that S x ǫx for any N c x N, where the set S = P +B. We put B = B. Suppose that x [N c,n ]. Clearly, for the set S = P +B, we have Let Note that Sx S x ǫx. k = mn{ : N c 0 > x and N c 0 x}. logn c logn.
0 LI-XIA DAI AND HAO PAN Snce logn grows exponentally, we get Bx 0 k B KlogN 0 +logn + +logn k KlogN k k Next we are ready to prove Theorem.2. j=0 c j 2Klogx/c 0c c. Proof of the Theorem.2. Let ǫ = +. Let B be the set satsfyng the requrements of Lemma 3.2 for ǫ = ǫ. Let N = N 0 ǫ. Snce wx as x, for every 2, let N max{n 0 ǫ,e 2N /ǫ } be an nteger such that 2 + Kǫ j wx c 0 c c for every x N. Let B = j= B [N,N + ]. = Note that for any N < x N +, we have {n x : n = p+b, p P, b B} {n x : n = p+b, p P, b B [N,N + ]} > {n x : n = p+b, p P, b B } N Px 2x ǫ x N logx 2ǫ x. So the sumset P +B has lower densty. Also, for every N < x N +, we have Bx B j [,x] Kǫ j logx wxlogx. c 0 c c j= Acknowledgment.
