It is shown that for non-equal widths of (a, ) layers, i.e., when the corresponding Hamiltonian is non-pt -symmetric, the system exhiits the scattering properties similar to those of truly PT -symmetric models provided that without loss/gain the structure presents the matched quarter stack. The inclusion of the loss/gain terms leads to an emergence of a finite numer of spectral ands characterized y real values of the loch index. Each spectral and consists of a central region where the transmission coefficient T 1, and two side regions with T 1. At the orders etween these regions the unidirectional reflectivity occurs. Also, the set of Fary-Perrot resonances with T = 1 are found in spite of the presence of loss/gain. PACS numers: 11.3.Er,.5.s,.8.Et Introduction - The possiility of delierately intermixing loss and gain in optical structures as a means to attain physical properties that are otherwise out of reach in standard arrangements has recently een explored in a numer of studies [1 8]. In general, such nonconservative configurations can display surprising ehavior resulting from the possile presence of exceptional points [9, 1] and mode i-orthogonality. A particular class of non-hermitian systems that has recently attracted considerale attention is that respecting paritytime (PT ) symmetry [1 5]. In this regard, if a Hamiltonian is PT -symmetric, then its ensuing spectrum happens to e entirely real in spite of the fact that the potential involved is complex [9, 1]. Once however a loss/gain parameter exceeds a critical value, this symmetry can spontaneously reak and consequently the eigenvalue spectrum ceases to e real and hence enters the complex domain [9]. The availaility of optical attenuation and amplification makes optics an ideal ground where PT -symmetric effects can e experimentally oserved and investigated [3,, 11]. In the paraxial regime, a necessary (ut not sufficient) condition to impose this symmetry in photonics is that the complex refractive index distriution oeys n(x) = n ( x) [1, ]. This latter condition directly implies real part of the refractive index potential must e an even function of position while its imaginary component must e antisymmetric. Thus far, the ramifications of parity-time symmetry on optical transport have een systematically considered in several theoretical and experimental investigations. Processes emerging from PT-symmetry, like doule refraction, and merging, unidirectional invisiility, arupt phase transitions and nonreciprocal wave propagation have een predicted and oserved [1, 3, 11 1]. In addition this same symmetry was recently utilized to enforce single-mode ehavior in laser micro-cavities as well as to judiciously control wave dynamics around exceptional points and photonic crystals [15]. Finally, similar concepts are nowadays used in other fields, like for example opto-mechanics, acoustics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, metamaterials, and imaging to mention a few [16]. In view of these developments, the following question naturally arises. To which extent could a system depart from an exact parity-time-symmetry and still exhiit PT -symmetric characteristics? Recently, a possiility of synthesizing complex potentials that support entirely real spectra despite the fact that they violate the necessary condition for PT -symmetry has een discussed in Ref. [17] within the context of optical supersymmetry. In this paper we show that it is indeed possile to oserve PT -scattering ehavior even in systems that strictly speaking lack this symmetry. This is explicitly demonstrated in perfectly matched multilayer non- Hermitian arrangements having unequal layer widths. In this case, the incorporation of loss/gain domains leads to a finite numer of ands-all associated with a real loch index that is reminiscent of actual PT -symmetric lattices [1]. Special attention has een paid to an emergence of unidirectional reflectivity. Our results indicate that a PT -symmetric response can e quite roust and therefore can e oserved in more involved structures even in the asence of a strict PT -symmetry. The model - We consider the propagation of an electromagnetic wave of frequency ω through a regular array of identical unit (a, ) cells emedded in a homogeneous c -medium, see Fig. 1. Each cell consists of two dielectric a and layers with the thicknesses d a and d, respectively, so that d = d a + d is the unit-cell size. The a and layers are made of the materials asoring and
2 amplifying the electromagnetic waves, respectively. The E + L E - L c a L a a a c FIG. 1. (Color online) A sketch of the model. R x E + R loss and gain in the layers are incorporated via complex permittivities, while the magnetic permeailities µ a, are assumed to e real and positive constants. The refractive indices n a,, impedances Z a, and wave phase shifts ϕ a, of a and layers are presented as follows, E - R n a = n () a (1 + iγ), Z a = Z(1 + iγ) 1, ϕ a = ϕ(1 + iγ)/, n = n () (1 iγ), Z = Z(1 iγ) 1, ϕ = ϕ(1 iγ)/, where Z = µ a /n () a = µ /n (), ϕ = ωn () a d a /c = ωn () d /c. Here the parameter γ > measures the strength of alanced loss and gain inside a and layers, respectively, and ϕ = ϕ a + ϕ is the purely real phase shift of the wave passing each of the unit cells. In the case of no loss/gain (γ = ) the structure is known as the matched quarter stack for which the a and layers are perfectly matched and have equal optic paths, n () a d a = n () d. As one can see, for γ and d a d the corresponding Hamiltonian has no the PT -symmetry. A particular PT -symmetric realization is achieved only when d a = d with ε () a = ε (), and µ a = µ. Within any layer an electromagnetic wave propagates along the x -direction (Fig. 1) perpendicular to the stratification according to the 1D Helmholtz equation. Its general solution inside every unit cell can e presented as a superposition of traveling forward and ackward plane waves. y comining these solutions with the oundary conditions for the wave at the interfaces etween a and layers, one can otain the unit-cell transfer matrix ˆM relating the wave amplitudes of two adjacent unit cells (see, e.g., Ref. [18]). For our model the elements of the M-matrix read M 11 = exp(iϕ) + γ exp( γϕ) 1 + γ, (1a) M 1 = iγ [exp( iϕ) exp(γϕ)], 1 + γ (1) M 1 = iγ [exp(iϕ) exp( γϕ)], 1 + γ (1c) M = exp( iϕ) + γ exp(γϕ) 1 + γ. (1d) ote that det ˆM = 1 in accordance with the general condition inherent for transfer matrices. On the other hand, the transfer matrix ˆM(γ) has specific symmetry, M (γ) = M 11( γ), M 1 (γ) = M 1( γ), () where stands for the complex conjugation. This symmetry can e compared with that emerging for various PT -symmetric Hamiltonians [7, 19 1]. Clearly, it differs from the standard one, M = M 11, M 1 = M 1, that originates from time-reversal symmetry. Frequency and structure - The dispersion relation for the loch index µ determined through the eigenvalues exp(±iµ ) of the transfer ˆM-matrix, is defined y the matrix trace, cos µ = M 11 + M. Thus, one otains cos µ = cos ϕ + γ cosh(γϕ) 1 + γ. (3) This relation determines the dependence of the loch wave numer κ = µ /d on the frequency ω (or, on the phase shift ϕ ω) for the wave inside the scattering region. One of the important conclusions that follows from Eq. (3), is a finite numer and of spectral ands defined y the condition cos µ < 1. This numer and depends on the parameter γ only, and for γ 1 can e estimated as and (1/πγ) ln(1/γ). () Within these ands the loch index µ is real in spite of the presence of loss and gain. This property has een widely discussed in view of the nature of the PT - symmetric systems. As is known, the real-valued solutions µ to the dispersion equation cos µ = M 11 +M can exist only when the trace M 11 + M of the transfer ˆM-matrix is real-valued, i.e. if ImM = ImM 11. (5) In our model this determinative condition is provided not due to the PT -symmetry ut merely due to the alance etween loss and gain. Outside the ands, where cos µ > 1, the index µ is purely imaginary, thus creating spectral gaps. Here the waves are known as the evanescent loch states, attenuated on the scale of the order of µ 1. Therefore, for a sufficiently long structure, µ 1, the transmission is exponentially small. It should e noted that in the asence of loss/gain (γ = ), there are no spectral gaps since all spectral ands are touching. When γ exceeds the critical value γ cr = 1, there are no spectral ands since the loch index µ (ω) ecomes imaginary for any frequency ω. Two examples of the dependence µ (ω) are shown in Fig. for different values of γ. It is quite instructive that within any spectral and the maximal value of the loch index µ (max) < π for any nonzero γ. The smaller the parameter γ, the closer to π can e the loch index µ. On the other hand, for any

Spectral ands and gaps are shown y shaded areas. given γ from the interval < γ < 1 the higher the and the smaller the value of µ (max). Transmittance - With the standard transfer matrix approach we derived analytical expression for the transmittance T of our model consisting of unit (a, ) cells and connected to perfect c -leads y the impedance Z, [ T = 1 γ sin ] 1 (µ ) (1 + γ ) F(γ, ϕ)f( γ, ϕ), (6) sin µ F(γ, ϕ) = γ sinh(γϕ) γ sin ϕ + (cos ϕ e γϕ ). (7) Here F( γ, ϕ) < for any value of ϕ, unlike F(γ, ϕ) that can e either positive or negative as a function of ϕ. Two examples of dependence T (ϕ) are given in Fig. 3. ln T ln T - γ =.5, Ν = γ =.5, Ν = FIG. 3. The logarithm of T defined y Eq. (6) as a function of ϕ for γ =.5 and different values of unit cells. Shaded regions correspond to spectral ands, and circles stand for the orders etween the regions with T 1 and T 1. The analysis shows that a distinctive property of the transmittance is that every spectral and consists of the central region with T 1 and those with T 1, see Figs. 3 and. At the orders etween these regions (circles in Fig. 3) the transmission is perfect, T = 1, and this happens due to vanishing the function F(γ, ϕ). The corresponding values ϕ s (γ) for which F(γ, ϕ s ) = can e compared with exceptional points emerging in the γ FIG.. Spectral ands and gaps in dependence on the loss/gain parameter γ. Full curve shows the order µ = aove which µ is imaginary (gaps). elow this curve µ is real. etween full and dashed curve µ is real and T 1. Inside dashed regions µ is real and T 1. The dependence ϕ = ϕ s(γ) is depicted y the dashed curve on which T = 1. The horizontal dash-dotted line is shown for γ =.5. PT -symmetric models (see, e.g., Ref. [] and references therein). However, in our case the loch index µ (γ, ϕ s ) does not vanish, in contrast to truly exceptional points for which oth conditions, T = 1 and µ =, are fulfilled. These conditions are known as that providing invisiility of a model in scattering process. The only situation for the invisiility to occur in our setup is when two conditions, F(γ, ϕ) = and µ (γ, ϕ) =, meet. As one can see in Fig., the sequence of exceptional points ϕ = ϕ sp ϕ s (γ sp ) emerges for the corresponding sequence of γ = γ sp for which two curves ϕ = ϕ s (γ) and µ (γ, ϕ) = touch each other. ote that at every fixed value of γ = γ sp the corresponding exceptional point ϕ sp is located on the top of the highest and. Apart from the specific points ϕ s (γ), the perfect transmission, T = 1, occurs due to Fary-Perot resonances located within spectral ands. They are defined y the condition sin(µ )/ sin µ = specifying the resonant values µ res = mπ/ (m = 1,, 3,..., 1) of the loch index µ. Since the spectrum µ (ω) is restricted y µ (max), the total numer of such resonances in a given spectral and can vary from zero to ( 1), depending on the and numer and loss/gain parameter γ. Specifically, for a fixed γ the higher spectral and contains the smaller numer of the Fary-Perot resonances. This result is principally different from what happens in an array of i-layers with real and positive optical parameters, where 1 numer of the Fary-Perot resonances emerge in any spectral and. Unidirectional reflectivity - The expressions for the
4 / R (L) R (R) 1 γ = FIG. 5. Ratio right-to-left reflectances (full curve) versus ϕ for γ =.5. Dashed regions are those where µ is real and T > 1, see Fig.. left and right reflectances, R (L) and R(R), read R (L) T = γ sin (µ ) (1 + γ ) sin µ F (γ, ϕ) ; (8) T = γ sin (µ ) (1 + γ ) sin µ F ( γ, ϕ). (9) ote that T ( γ) = T (γ) and R (L) ( γ) = R(R) (γ). It is remarkale that T (γ) and R (L) (γ), R(R) (γ) satisfy the famous relation, 1 T = R (L) R(R), (1) that is known to occur in PT -symmetric models (see, e.g., Ref. [3]). Since at the specific points ϕ = ϕ s (γ) the function F(γ, ϕ) vanishes, the left reflectance (8) also vanishes, however, the right one (9) remains finite. For γ 1 and γ exp(γϕ) 1 it can e estimated as follows, 16 γ sin (µ ). (11) This effect is known as the unidirectional reflectivity [1]. It is one of the most important properties of scattering in the PT -symmetric systems. The ratio etween right and left reflectances, /R(L) = F ( γ, ϕ)/f (γ, ϕ), (1) is shown in Fig. 5 in dependence on ϕ for γ =.5. Remarkaly, this ratio is -independent, whereas at the Fary-Perot resonances where sin(µ )/ sin µ =, oth reflectances expectedly vanish, R (L) = R(R) =. As to the exceptional points ϕ = ϕ sp (γ = γ sp ) where our setup can e treated as invisile, the left reflectance vanishes, R (L) =, while the right one is very large, = γ (1 + γ ) [cosh(γϕ) cos ϕ] γ e γϕ. (13) The estimate is given for γ sp 1 and, hence, γ sp ϕ sp 1. Within the spectral gaps where the loch index is purely imaginary (µ = i µ ), for a sufficiently long structure, µ 1, the transmittance (6) is exponentially small. In such a situation the left reflectance (8) is larger than T, however smaller than 1. The right reflectance (9) can e shown to exceed unity. Summarizing, one can write, T < R (L) < 1 < R(R). oth reflectances increase and eventually saturate inside the gaps for. However, oth R (L) 1 and R(R) 1 remain to e valid. Thus, the ratio R (L) /R(R) can reach extremely small values of the order of 1 7. Conclusions - We have analytically studied the model that reveals the PT -symmetric transport although its Hamiltonian, in general, is not the PT -symmetric one. Our analysis exhiits that such a situation emerges in the i-layer optical setup which without loss/gain is known as the quarter stack, provided all layers are perfectly matched (no reflections due to oundary conditions). In the asence of loss/gain terms, all spectral ands are touched thus creating a perfect transmission for any wave frequency. When the alanced loss and gain are alternatingly included in all layers, the spectral gaps emerge etween the ands, and the total numer of ands is defined y the loss/gain parameter γ only. Inside the spectral ands the loch index µ appears to e real as it happens in the known models with the PT -symmetric Hamiltonians. The analysis shows that each of the spectral ands consists of central region where the transmission coefficient is greater than one, T 1, and two side regions with T 1. At the orders etween these regions the transmission is perfect, T = 1, however, µ does not typically vanish as happens in the known PT -symmetric models. These orders are of specific interest since one of the reflectances vanishes, thus leading to the so-called unidirectional reflectivity, the effect which is important oth from theoretical and experimental points of view. The ratio etween left and right reflectances is specified y the loss/gain parameter γ and the wave frequency ω, eing independent of the numer of cell units. It is important that a strong difference etween left and right reflectances occurs in a relatively large wave-propagation region where the loch index µ is real. The analytical expressions display that inside the spectral ands the Fary-Perot resonances emerge in spite of the presence of loss and gain. These resonances exist oth in the regions with T > 1 and T < 1. It is also worthwhile that the invisiility (when oth relations, T = 1 and µ = hold) is realized only for a quite specific values γ sp and for the corresponding wave frequencies located in the highest spectral ands. In conclusion, our study unexpectedly manifests that the PT -symmetric properties may occur in non-pt - symmetric systems, the fact that may e important in view of experimental realizations of matched quarter
5 5 stacks, as well as for the theory of the PT -symmetric transport. Acknowledgments - The authors are thankful to L. Deych, T. Kottos and A. Lisyansky for fruitful discussions.
