10 NLIS entrifico asting Machine Instruction Manual SRIPTION The Kerr entrifico asting Machine permits a controlled centrifugal force which produces the soundest castings. ctuated by a heavy-duty steel spring, the machine utilizes a secondary arm pivoted to the straight arm. The secondary arm carries the flask, keeping it in line with the casting force when the arm revolves. s a result, the cast metal travels in a straight line directly into the mold, producing strong, dense castings. UNPKIN The entrifico asting Machine carton contains the following: Item 0000 (with accessories) or 00 (without accessories), Instruction Manual, ccessories for 0000,, lask radles (ig );,, J, lasks (ig ); Sprue ases (ig ); Large lay rucible (ig ); Small lay rucible (ig ); Universal Tongs (ig ); Removable Weights (ig ); asting Knob (ig ); rucible arriage (ig ) ig ig ig ig ig ig ig ig ig ase (ig ) should be securely fastened with the Stop Pin (ig ) in the ase positioned to the left of the operator s casting position. ig ig ig ig ig ST UP O RM SSMLY N SSORIS Place the arm assembly (ig ) on the rotor shaft (ig ) so that the pin slots in the arm rest on the balancing pin (ig ). Tighten the top nut by hand (ig ) onto the rotor shaft to hold the arm assembly securely. The rucible arriage (ig ) is already attached to the secondary casting arm (ig ). This carriage will accept either the Small ( oz) or Large (. oz) lay rucible, depending on the amount of metal to be cast. Slide either crucible in the crucible carriage with the small-end hole against the hole in the backplate (ig ). ig 0 ig ig ig UTION: Mount the casting machine in a casting well that is at least deep. This prevents molten metal particles from landing on the operator while arm is in motion. ttach the well and casting machine base securely to a solid, level, fireproof surface. alance the machine for each casting before flask burnout. This minimizes costly metal spillage and further assures operator safety. fter each balancing, securely tighten the top nut located on the machine arm. Use dark tinted safety glasses or goggles to protect the eyes from the bright molten metal and torch flame. Wear heat-resistant gloves and apron for protection when melting metal and when casting. lways use tongs when handling hot flasks. Lift hand and torch up and away from spinning casting machine arm. lways allow arm to spin to a complete stop. Never attempt to stop casting machine manually. asting machine metal components are not designed for direct contact of a torch flame. Repeated exposure will cause metal fatigue and failure during operation. INSTLLTION Mount the casting machine on a solid, level, fireproof work surface surrounded by the Kerr Standard asting Well, item 0 (sold separately) (ig 0). llow / cm high and / cm diameter for Standard asting Well installation. ig 0 ig ig The unit accepts the,, J or lasks on the secondary arm. To properly center the flasks to receive the cast metal, the lask radle is suspended on the cradle supporting pins (ig 0) to hold the lask. The lask rests on the secondary arm with no cradle. The unit is supplied with two counterweights: Lock Weight and Permanent Weight (ig ). When properly balanced, the casting machine arm assembly will revolve smoothly with a minimum of vibration. LNIN T RM It is important that the casting machine be balanced prior to casting. properly balanced machine minimizes the possibility of metal spilling from the crucible as well as undue machine bearing wear. NOT: e sure to balance the arm before burnout as there is no time to work with a heated flask between its removal from the furnace and the casting procedure. Place the invested flask, prior to burnout, in the cradle with the open end (where the wax is exposed) facing the backplate on the crucible carriage. e sure that the investment has been scraped from the sides of the flask, and it is even and level with the edges. This will assure proper seating of the flask in the machine. Looking through the hole in the clay crucible, the sprue wax should be visible at the flask opening. This allows one to see the direction the metal will travel in the center of the mold during the casting operation. Next slide the crucible, in its carriage, up against the flask and cradle as tightly as possible. Place the measured amount of metal to be used for the casting in the crucible. This end of the casting arm is now ready to balance against the counterweights on the straight arm.

11 ig ig ig ig ig When balancing the arm of the entrifico asting Machine, wedge a small object between the straight arm and secondary arm (ig ) so as to extend the secondary arm out straight. Now loosen the top nut (ig ) enough so the arm rocks on the rotor shaft. djust the counterweights (ig ) on the end of the straight arm as necessary to balance the weight of the flask. Turn the weights to move them in or out until the arm balances. alance is achieved when a slight tap on either end of the arm will cause it to tilt in that direction. If weights Lock Weight and Permanent Weight are tight, turn them in opposite direction to loosen. The addition of a Removable Weight placed next to the Permanent Weight may be necessary to achieve balance. fter the weights are adjusted, be sure to retighten top nut. The machine is balanced for this casting only. Since there is no absolute weight factor for the pattern, metal and invested flask the machine should be rebalanced for each individual casting. WININ T STIN MIN Install the Kerr ast-r-knob (ig ) to the end of the straight arm. To wind the casting machine for precious metals, hold the ast-r-knob and make three complete clockwise turns of the arm. or non-precious metal castings, wind the machine four times. The heavy duty spring in the machine will require increasingly more force as one winds. The release of this force later causes the centrifugal casting action. ig STIN ontinue to expose the metal to the flame until it is completely fluid. Once fluid, continue to hold the flame over the metal. old the ast-r-knob enough to release the Stop Pin, allowing it to drop into the base of the machine. Raise the torch and release the casting arm, keeping both the torch and your hand away from the spinning casting arm. llow the casting arm to continue spinning until it stops itself. If balancing instructions have been followed, it will spin smoothly and with minimum vibration. s the casting arm spins the metal will cool and solidify in the flask. This helps to obtain a dense, sound casting. ig ig fter the arm is wound, pull up on the rubber tipped Stop Pin (ig ) in the machine base. llow the arm to lock in place against the pin. The crucible should now be facing the operator. This is the casting position. When not holding the arm in its wound position the stop pin drops into the machine base. MLTIN T MTL N POSITIONIN T LSK Wind the machine and set the Stop Pin (ig ) while the burnout is taking place. old a lighted melting torch pointed down to the metal in the crucible. Just before the metal enters the melting stages, remove the flask from the furnace, using casting tongs to place the flask in the lask radle (ig ) or between the cradle pins for larger flasks. The sprue opening must be toward the crucible. Slide the crucible carriage backplate (ig ) flush against the flask, so that when the metal is cast it will leave the crucible and enter the sprue opening in the invested flask. aution: Use dark tinted safety glasses or goggles to protect the eyes. xposure to bright molten metal and torch flame can cause serious eye damage. The dentist or laboratory assumes all risk and liability for damages arising out of the improper use of Kerr products. In the event of a defect in material or workmanship, Kerr liability is limited, at Kerr s option, to replacement of the defective product or part thereof, or reimbursement of the actual cost of the defective product. To take advantage of this limited warranty, the defective product must be returned to Kerr. In no event shall Kerr be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. The electrical building installation must be protected by a type circuit breaker with a rating of at least. If an additional circuit breaker is used, it must be designed for a tripping current of at least 0 m. The furnace requires the connection of a protective ground wire to the electric outlet for safe electrical operation. The distance between the electric outlet and the furnace must be selected so that the. m long power cord supplied with the furnace is sufficiently long (extension cords are not allowed!).
