Multiple Gamma Function and Its Application to Computation of Series and Products V. S. Adamchik Department of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA Abstract. The multiple gamma function Γ n, defined by a recurrence-functional equation as a generalization of the Euler gamma function, was originally introduced by Kinkelin, Glaisher, and Barnes around 900. Today, due to the pioneer work of Conrey, Katz and Sarnak, interest in the Barnes function has been revived. This paper discusses some theoretical aspects of the Γ n function and their applications to summation of series and infinite products. Keywords: Barnes function, Gamma function, Riemann zeta function, Hurwitz zeta function, Stirling numbers, Stieltjes constants, Catalan s constant, harmonic numbers, Glaisher s constant AMS: 33E, M, Y. Introduction The Hurwitz zeta function, one of the fundamental transcendental functions, is traditionally defined see [] by the series ζs, z = k + z s, Rs > 0 It admits an analytic continuation to the entire complex plane except for the simple pole s =. The Riemann zeta function ζs is a special case of ζs, z ζs, = ζs The Hurwitz function has quite a few series and integral representations see [, 8]. The most famous is the Hermite integral: ζs, z = z s + z s s + sin s arctan x z 0 x + z s/ e πx dx, s, Rz > 0 Supported by the National Science Foundation c 0 Kluwer Academic Publishers. 3 Multiple Gamma Function 3 from which one can deduce many fundamental properties of the Hurwitz function, including the asymptotic expansion at infinity: ζs, z = z s s + z s m + j= B j Γj + s j! Γs z j s+ + O z m+s+ The Hurwitz function is closely related to the multiple gamma function Γ n z defined as a generalization of the classical Euler gamma function Γz, by the following recurrence-functional equation for references and a short historical survey see [6, 9]: Γ n+ z + = Γ n+z Γ n z, z C, n IN, Γ z = Γz, 3 Γ n =. The multiple gamma function, originally introduced over 00 years ago, has significant applications in the connection with the Riemann Hypothesis. Montgomery [4] and Sarnak [7] have conjectured that the iting distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function is the same as that of the eigenphases of matrices in the CUE the circular unitary ensemble. It has been shown in works by Mehta, Sarnak, Conrey, Keating, and Snaith that a closed representation for statistical averages over CUE of N N unitary matrices, when N can be expressed in terms of the Barnes function Gz = /Γ z defined by Gz + = Gz Γz, z C, 4 G =. Keating and Snaith [9, 0] conjectured the following relationship between the moments of ζ + it, averaged over t, and characteristic polynomials, averaged over the CUE: log aλ T log λ T T λ γ + λ k= T 0 ζ + it λ λ k k ζk k +, dt = where aλ is a known function of λ IN. The series on the right hand side of 5 is understood in a sense of analytic continuation see [] 5 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.3

4 V. Adamchik for the method of evaluation of such sums, provided by the Barnes function k= z k ζk k + = log Gz + + zγ + logπ +, 6 z z <, where γ denotes the Euler-Mascheroni constant. Conversely, we find that the moments of ζ + it in 5 are just a ratio of two Barnes functions: log aλ T ζ λ T log λ T T 0 + it Gλ + dt = Gλ + The evidence in support of Keating and Snaith s conjecture is confirmed by a few particular cases λ =,, 3, 4, and the numerical experiment, conducted by Odlyzko [5], for T up to 0 0 th zero of the Riemann zeta function. The identity 6 can be further generalized to z k ζk k + r, r Q, z < k= and then evaluated using a technique developed in [] in terms of the r-tiple gamma functions. For instance, with r = 3 we find k= z k ζk k + = z log Γ 3z + + log Gz z 6z + 3z z + γz 3 logπ ζ, z <. z In this paper we aim at developing a mathematical foundation for symbolic computation of special classes of infinite series and products. Generally speaking, all series subject to convergence of the form: Rj log m P j, j= m IN, where Rz and P z are polynomials, can be expressed in a closed form by means of the multiple gamma function, which may further rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.4

Multiple Gamma Function 5 simplify to elementary functions. This algorithm also complements the work previously started by Adamchik and Srivastava [] for symbolic summation of series involving the Riemann zeta function, as well as works by Gosper, Karr, Paule, Wilf and Zeilberger. The algorithm will expand the capabilities of existing software packages for symbolic summation.. Asymptotics of ζ λ, z In this section, based on the integral, we derive the asymptotic expansion of ζ t, z = d dt ζt, z, when t = λ, λ IN 0 and z. Differentiating both sides of with respect to s, we obtain ζ λ, z = + + zλ+ λ log z zλ log z zλ+ λ + tan x z cos λ tan x z e πx x + z λ/ dx 8 logx + z sin λ tan x z e πx x + z λ/ dx Next, we expand the integrands into the Taylor series with respect to z. Taking into account that and x + z λ/ cos λ tan x λ/ z = k λ z λ k x k k x + z λ/ sin λ tan x λ/ z = k λ z k+λ x k+ k + we compute and 0 tan x z cos λ tan x z e πx x + z λ/ dx = λ/ z λ k k λ k 0 x k tan x z e πx dx 9 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.5

6 V. Adamchik 0 logx + z sin λ tan x z e πx x + z λ/ dx = λ/ z k+λ k λ k + 0 x k+ logx + z e πx dx. 0 In the next step, we find asymptotic expansions of integrals in the right hand side of 9 and 0 when z. Expanding tan x z and log x + z into the Taylor series with respect to x and performing term by term integration, we find 0 x k tan x z e πx dx = r k z j B j+k+ 4j + j + k + + O z r+3, 0 x k+ log + x /z e πx dx = r j= k z j B j+k+ 4jj + k + + O z r+, where B k are the Bernoulli numbers. Substituting 9 and 0 back into 8, after some tedious algebra, we obtain PROPOSITION. The derivatives of the Hurwitz zeta function have the following asymptotic expansion when z : ζ λ, z = + zλ+ λ + r j= log z log z zλ z j+λ+ j B j j! r j= log z zλ+ λ + [ j k + k + z j+λ+ B j λ j j! ] λ k + O z r λ+ where ζ t, z = d dt ζt, z, λ k = λ λ +... λ + k is the Pochhammer symbol, and [ ] n k are the Stirling cycle numbers, defined recursively [6] by [ n ] [ n = n k k ] + [ ] n, k { [ n ], n = 0, = 0 0, n 0 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.6

Multiple Gamma Function 7 For λ = 0 and λ =, formula yields the well-know asymptotics []: ζ 0, N = N log N log N N ζ, N = N + N + O N, log N N O N 3 In the similar way, we can derive the asymptotic expansions for higher order derivatives ζ m λ, N, where N and λ IN Multiple gamma, zeta and the Hurwitz functions In [0], Vardi expressed the Γ n function in terms of the multiple zeta function ζ n s, z, as log Γ n z = s 0 where and ζ n s, z = ζn s, z = s R n = + k z R n+ k 4 k ζk s, s 0 s... k =0 k n=0 k + z s k + k k n + z s k + n n 5 6 The aim of this section is to find a closed form representation for log Γ n z in finite terms of the Hurwitz zeta function, and vice versa. PROPOSITION. The multiple gamma function Γ n z may be expressed by means of the derivatives of the Hurwitz zeta function: log Γ n z = n P k,n z ζ k, z ζ k n! 7 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.7

8 V. Adamchik where the polynomials P k,n z are defined by [ ] P k,n z = z j k j n k j j=k+ [ ] where n j are the Stirling cycle numbers. 8 The polynomials P k,n z can be envisaged as the generalized Stirling polynomials of the first kind, generated by n n k + x z = P k,n zx k with the following two alternative forms of representation and P k,n z = k k! P k,n z = i=k+ n y n log k y y z z n! n i i! [ 9 y 0 ] i k + 0 For z = the polynomials P k,n z are simplified to the Stirling numbers: [ ] n P k,n = k Interestingly, the polynomials P k,n z were first considered by Mitrinovic [3] 40 years ago with no relation to the multiple gamma function as a possible generalization of the Stirling numbers. The proof of Proposition is based on the following two lemmas. LEMMA. The multiple zeta function ζ n s, z defined by 6 may be expressed by means of the Hurwitz function ζ n s, z = n P j,n z ζs j, z n! Proof. Recall the definition of the Stirling cycle numbers k + n = k i [ n ] n n! i i=0 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.8

Multiple Gamma Function 9 Expanding k i = k + z z i by the binomial theorem, implies that k + n = n n! i i j i=0 k + z j z i j [ n i Interchanging the order of summation and making use of 8, leads us to k + n = P j,n zk + z j n n! Finally, we substitute this binomial coefficients representation into 6: ] ζ n s, z = = k + n k + z s n P j,n z n! k + z s j We complete the proof by evaluating the inner sum to the Hurwitz zeta function. LEMMA. The function R n defined by 5 may be expressed by means of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function R n = n [ ] n ζ k n! k + Proof. Using Lemma with z = and formula, we get ζ k s, = k! which, upon differentiation, yields k [ ] k ζs j j ζ k s, = ζ 0 δ 0,k + s 0 s k! j= 3 k [ ] k ζ j 4 j Here δ k,n is the Kronecker delta function. Next, we sum both parts of identity 4 with respect to k: rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.9

0 V. Adamchik R n = s 0 ζ k s, s = ζ 0 + ζ j j= [ ] k k! j k=j Observing, that the inner sum can be expressed via the Stirling numbers: [ ] [ ] k n = k! j n! j + k=j we complete the proof. Proof of Proposition. The derivation of 7 immediately follows from formula 4, by applying Lemma and Lemma : log Γ n z = n j z j n P j,n z ζ j, z n! n j! n j [ ] n j ζ k k + Interchanging the order of summation, we obtain n log Γ n z = P j,n zζ j, z n! n k ζ k j z j n! [ ] n j n j! k + Finally, we note that the above inner sum is equal to representation 0 with a reversed order of summation. This completes the proof. In the second part of this section we invert Proposition and express the derivatives of the Hurwitz function in finite terms of the multiple gamma function. The problem of representing derivatives in terms of other special functions was originally addressed by Ramanujan who studied functional and asymptotic properties of this function [4] ϕ k z = ζ k, z + ζ k. It is unknown if Ramanujan was aware of Barnes results regarding the multiple gamma function. rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.0

Multiple Gamma Function PROPOSITION 3. The derivatives of the Hurwitz zeta function may be expressed by means of the multiple gamma function Γ n z ζ n, z ζ n = n k k! Q k,n z log Γ k+ z 5 where the polynomials Q k,n z are defined by { } n j Q k,n z = z n j j k j=k { } and j k are the Stirling subset numbers, defined by [6] 6 { n } { n = k k k } + { } n, k { { n }, n = 0, = 0 0, n 0 7 For z = 0 the polynomials Q k,n z simplify to the Stirling numbers: { } { } n j n + Q k,n 0 = = j k k + j=k LEMMA 3. Polynomials P j,n z and Q k,j z satisfy the following discrete orthogonality relation: n j k Q k,j zp j,n z = δ k,n 8 j=k where δ k,n is the Kronecker delta. Proof. The proof is primarily based on the discrete orthogonality relation for the Stirling numbers: [ ]{ } j n m+j = δ m,n m j Proof of Proposition 3. The proof readily follows by replacing log Γ k+ z in 5 with 7 and then using lemma 3. Polynomials Q k,n z generate a great deal of new integer sequences as well as closed form representations for the existing ones. Here are two examples from the online encyclopedia of integer sequences [8]. rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.

V. Adamchik Example The sequence A044:, 6, 70, 50, 4, made of coefficients by x in the expansion of / x 3x 5x 7x. This sequence has a closed form representation n 3 Q 3,n = 48 7n 3 5 n + 3 n+ Example Riordan s sequence A labeled trees of diameter 3 with n nodes:, 60, 0, 630, 736, 4536, 430. This sequence is generated by the coefficients of z in the polynomial Q,n z, which is also can be written as Q,n z z { } n n = z 0 n Consider the class of infinite sums 4. Summation Rk log P k 9 where Rz and P z are polynomials. We will show that all such sums can be expressed in finite terms of the multiple gamma function. Clearly, 9 is a linear combination subject to the branch cut of log of Φ N z = N k p logk + z 30 Thus, it is sufficient to find a closed form for 30. Expanding k p = k + x x p by virtue of the binomial theorem, we get where Φ N z = p p j z p j F N z j rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.

Multiple Gamma Function 3 F N z = N k + z j logk + z 3 Assuming the analytic property of the Hurwitz zeta function, 3 can be written in the form d F N z = s ds N k + z s = ζ j, N + z + ζ j, z and therefore Φ N z = p p j+ z p j j ζ j, N + z + ζ j, z 3 Further, we replace the first cumulant ζ j, z by a linear combination of the multiple gamma function see Proposition 3, and the second cumulant ζ j, N + z + by asymptotic. When the original series 9 converges, the N-dependent term will vanish as N. However, if series 9 diverges, formula 3 combined with will provide a zeta regularization of 9 in the Hadamard sense. In order to make this idea clear, we will consider a few examples. 4.. Dilcher s sum In [7], Dilcher introduced a particular generalization of the Euler gamma function Γx which is related to the Stieltjes constants γ k, as Γx is related to the Euler γ constant. The Stieltjes constants γ k are defined as coefficients in the Laurent expansion of the Riemann zeta function ζs at the simple pole s = : ζs = s + k γ k s k k! The Euler γ constant is a particular case of the Stieltjes constants γ 0 = γ. Dilcher derived a few basic properties of the generalized gamma function as well as its asymptotic expansion when z. The following infinite series appears as a constant term in the asymptotic expansion: rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.3

4 V. Adamchik D k = log k j + logk j + log k j 33 j= For k = the sum 33 simplifies to D = log /π. For other values of k >, the closed form was unknown. In this section, we apply the technique of the multiple gamma function and evaluate the logarithmic series 33 in closed form. We begin with a finite sum D k = j= N log k j + logk j + log k j 34 and then rewrite it in terms of the Hurwitz function. The following chain of operations is valid assuming the analytic property of the Hurwitz function k s 0 N j= k s k log k k j + c = s 0 s k j= j + c s j=n+ ζ k 0, c + ζ k 0, c + N + N j + c s = j= j + c s = 35 Applying this to 34, yields k D k = ζ k 0, + ζ k 0, + ζk 0, 3 + ζ k 0, N + ζ k 0, N + ζk 0, N Now we use the asymptotic expansion of ζ k 0, N, N. From the Hermite integral it follows that the dominant asymptotic term of ζ k 0, N comes from the first two terms ζs, z = z s + z s s +... This leads to the following asymptotic expansion N rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.4

Multiple Gamma Function 5 ζ k 0, N = N k j k j + j log k j+ N+ k log k N + O N, 37 where k j + j is the Pochhammer symbol. Thus, to prove that the iting part in 36 vanishes to zero, it is sufficient to show that [ N + log j N + N + log j N + N + 3 log j N + 3 ] = 0 38 for any j =,,..., k +. This follows immediately from the fact that logn + c = log N + c N + O N, N and the sum of coefficients by log k j+ N in 38 is zero. Therefore, we have D k = k log k ζ k 0 + ζ k 0, 39 Note, ζ k 0, in the right hand-side of 39 is a linear combination of ζ k 0: ζ k 0, = k k logk + ζ k j 0 log j j Combining this with 39, yields PROPOSITION 4. The infinite series 33 can be expressed in finite terms of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function j= k k k D k = log k ζ k 0 + ζ k j 0 log j 40 j j= In particular, for k = and k = 3 we have rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.5

6 V. Adamchik D = j= log j + log j + log j = π + log π 3 log γ γ 4 respectively. D 3 = 3D log + ζ logπ log + log Note that by the functional equation ζs = s π s Γ s sin πs ζ s, Rs the Riemann zeta function admits a meromorphic continuation to the entire complex plane. Differentiating this with respect to s and setting s = 0, allows us to express derivatives ζ k 0 in finite terms of the Stieltjes constants see [] for a closed form evaluation. Therefore, formulas like 4 and 4 can be used for numeric computation of ζ k 0 as well as the Stieljes constants γ k. 4.. Melzak s Product Let us consider the infinite product N + x k k k 43 and evaluate it in closed form. Originally, this product was computed by Melzak [] in a particular case when x = N + k k = π k e 44 Later on, P. Borwein and W. Dykshoorn [5] generalized 44 and computed it in terms of Bendersky s function, defined by see [6]... n n = Γ n +, which is closely related to the Barnes function G Γ n + = n! n Gn + rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.6

Multiple Gamma Function 7 Note that 43 can be written in an alternative form by changing the product it from N to N + : N+ + x k k = e x k N + x k k k In this section, using the multiple gamma function technique, we reevaluate product 43, derive its few particular cases in terms of known constants and then generalize it to N k 4x k k PROPOSITION 5. The following identity holds for Rx > N + x k k = e x Γx + Gx + k Γ Gx + G 45 Proof. We first convert this product into a finite sum by applying the logarithm to it: N + x k k = k exp N 46 k k log k logk + x In the next step we split the finite sum in the right hand-side of 46 into three sums: N N k k log k logk + x = x k logk + x + N k k log k N k k + x logk + x and evaluate each of them in terms of the Hurwitz function. For arbitrary c such that Rc > 0, we find rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.7

8 V. Adamchik and N N k k + c logk + c = s N log + ζ, c + ζ, c + + N k logk + c = ζ 0, c + ζ 0, c + + N N s ζ, c + k k + c s = + ζ, c + + N ζ 0, c + + ζ 0, c + + N where derivatives ζ λ, z are understood by 8. Now we use Proposition, in particular asymptotic expansions 3, to get N k k log k logk + x = x log Γx + x log Γx + ζ, x + + ζ, x + 47 log x 3 ζ In view of Proposition 3 with n =, we convert the derivatives of the Hurwitz function to the Barnes function: ζ, z = log Gz + + z log Γz + ζ 3ζ = log + log π + log G Combining these with 47, after some algebraic manipulations, leads to 45. Here are a few particular cases of 45: N + n n n = A6 6 e π 48 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.8

Multiple Gamma Function 9 N N + 4 n n n = 3π 6e 49 + n n n = A3 e + G π Γ 3 4 /3 π 50 where A is the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant and G is Catalan s constant defined by log A = ζ G = k k + respectively. The Melzak product can be further generalized. Here is one of such formulas PROPOSITION 6. The following identity holds for Rx > : N k 4x k k = cosπx exp x + 7ζ3 π π G + xg x 4 G3 3 xg x 5 8 G 3 xg 3 + x We skip the proof of this proposition, since it could be done in the same manner as in Proposition 5. CORROLARY. The following identity holds for Rx > : N tanπx 4x exp k 4x k k = [ x + πi + 7ζ3 π + 4ix Li ω Li ω π π Li 3 ω Li 3 ω where ω = expπix and Li k ω is the polylogarithm, defined by ω k Li k ω =, k >, ω nk ] 5 rama.tex; /03/0; 0:37; p.9

0 V.
