1 Latest Results on Bottom Spectroscopy and Production with CDF Igor V. Gorelov arxiv:71.313v1 [hepex] 17 Oct 7 Astract Using data collected with the CDF Run II detector, new measurements on ottom production crosssections are presented. The latest achievements in ottom hadron spectroscopy are discussed. The results are ased on a large sample of semileptonic and hadronic decays of ottom states made availale y triggers ased on the precise CDF tracking system. 1 First Oservation of the Baryons Σ and Σ in CDF The ottom Σ ( states decay strongly into Λ yemittingsoftpionasshowninfigure1. Our results are ased on data collected with the CDF II detector [] and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.1f 1. The trigger used in this study is ased on displaced tracks. It reconstructs with the centraltrackerapairofp T >.GeV/ctracksat Level 1 and enales secondary vertex selection at Level requiring each of these tracks to have impact parameter measured y the CDF silicon detector SVX II larger than 1µm. The signals of Σ ( ± states were sought in the decay chain Σ ( ± Λ ± soft, Λ Λ c, Λ c pk a. Doule peak signatures are oserved in every case. Oservation and Mass Measurement of the Baryon Ξ The ottom cascade aryons Ξ consist of a single ottom quark, one strange quark and one light quark. Theoretical predictions for these heavy aryons are outlined in Tale 3 [4]. We consider the lowest lying Ξ states that decay weakly and the Ξ states that decay radiatively or strongly via pion emission. The Ξ candidates are reconstructed in the decay chain Ξ J/ψΞ with secondary states J/ψ µ µ and Ξ Λ, Λ p (see Figure 3. Since experiments with ule chamers the strange cascade, given its long decay path of c τ = 4.91cm [5], is identified as a charged track with a 1track decay vertex at the end formed y a kinked soft pion track as shown at Figure 3. The key technique in this analysis is the tracking algorithm developed to reconstruct Ξ tracks leaving hits in the CDF silicon vertex tracker SVX II. A finest tracking resolution [] coupled with the custom software provide a clean signal for Ξ, see Figure 4. The results [6] are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and with the oservation made y the DØ Collaoration [7]. 3 Correlated Production in CDF II Detector In this chapter we cover riefly a unique analysis on a paired production measurement. As leading order(lo processes dominateproduction,σ, whilenexttoleading (NLO processes are essential for inclusive σ studies, the measurement of σ will help to disentangle LO and NLO contriutions and to resolve the controversy etween the Run I DØ and CDF measurements [8]. We select dimuon events with invariant masses 5 < M(µ 1 µ < 8GeV/c, outside of the domain populated y sequential decays of single quarks and Z modes, and extract σ( µ X, µ X, sutracting contriutions from cc, prompt DrellYan pairs, c and onium prompt decays,, K decays, and misidentified dimuon candidates. The signal and ackground contriutions are determined y fitting the experimental dimensional impact parameterd (µ 1,d (µ Photon 7
4 distriution to corresponding templates expected for various dimuon sources. The method exploits the fact that the shape of the d (µ distriution is largely determined y the lifetime of its parent heavy hadron. The analysis is ased on a data sample of total luminosity L = 74p 1 collected with the CDF dimuon trigger [] having no iases with respect to d (µ distriution. The projection of the dimensional fit onto d (µ comprising various ackground contriutions is shown in Figure 6. The errors include statistical and systematic uncertainties added in quadratures. From this measurement we derive σ(,p T 6GeV/c, y 1 = 1618 ± 148n. The systematic uncertainty due to choice of the fragmentation model is 5%. 4 Summary CDF announces the first oservation of four ottom aryon Σ ( ± resonance states. CDF has also oserved the strange ottom cascade aryon Ξ, and our measurements are in agreement with the DØ oservation and with theoretical predictions. CDF II detector has measured the correlated production crosssection of pairs with quarks identified in their muonic semileptonic modes. The measurement is consistent with theoretical expectations. Using NLO MonteCarlo crosssection calculations, the full production crosssection in the kinematic domain (p T 6GeV/c, y 1 has een derived. pull Figure 6: The projection of the dimensional fit of d (µ 1,d (µ with ackground templates summed up and data superimposed. The notations used are B as source, C as csource and P as the source of prompt muons. imental crosssection is found to e σ( µ, µ = 1549 ± 133p. The exact NLO predictions are made using Herwig MonteCarlo program[9], MNR code[1] running with EVTGEN generator [11], parton structure functions from MRST [1] fits and Peterson fragmentation function [13]. 5 Acknowledgments The author is grateful to his colleagues from the CDF BPhysics Working Group for useful suggestions and comments made during preparation of this talk.
