GRASSMANNIANS AND REPRESENTATIONS arxiv:math/ v2 [math.ag] 12 Ju 2006 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO Abstract. In this note we use Bott-Bore-Wei theory to compute cohomoogy of interesting vector bundes on sequences of Grassmannians. 1. Introduction For any positive integer n the higher cohomoogy of the ine bunde O(n on P m 1 vanishes. The dimension of the space of goba sections of this bunde is easiy cacuated to be ( n+m n via the identification of H 0 (P m 1,O(n with the vector space of homogeneous forms of degree n in m variabes. If we view P m 1 as the space of ines in an m-dimensiona vector space V, then the ine bunde O(n is the n-th tensor power of the dua of the tautoogica ine subbunde O( 1. Generaizing to the Grassmannian of k-panes we are ed to a number of questions about the cohomoogy of vector bundes on Grassmannians. The most obvious question is the foowing: Let V be a vector space of dimension m. Compute the dimension of the space of sections H 0 (Gr(k,V,V n as a function of k,m,n, where V is the dua of the tautoogica rank k subbunde on the Grassmannian of k-panes in V. Likewise, if we are interested in the dimension of inear systems we coudaskforthedimensionoftheinearsystemh 0 (Gr(k,V,(det V n. In this note we use Bott-Bore-Wei theory to answer these questions. In particuar we wi compute for any (irreducibe representation W of GL k the dimension H 0 (Gr(k,m,W where W is the vector bunde on Gr(k, m whose fiber at a point corresponding to a k-dimensiona inear subspace L is the dua vector space W viewed as a GL(L-modue. In addition we expain when the higher cohomoogy vanishes. Our motivation came from trying to understand cohomoogy of vector bundes on cassifying spaces. It is aso cosey reated to the study of representations of ind-groups ([2]. The cassifying space, BG m, for the mutipicative group G m, is the infinite projective space P Mathematics Subject Cassification. Primary 14M15; Secondary 20G05. 2 2 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO The sequence of bundes {O P m(n} m1 defines a ine bunde on BG m whose goba sections is the imit of the countabe sequence of finite dimensiona vector spaces H 0 (P m,o(n. In a simiar way the cassifying space BGL k may be identified with the infinite Grassmannian Gr(k, which is the imit of the finitedimensiona Grassmannians Gr(k,m. For a given GL k -modue W, the associated sequence of vector bundes on Gr(k, m defines a vector bunde on the cassifying space BGL k. As we show beow, the goba sections of these bundes on Gr(k,m have natura GL m -modue structures and the sequence of goba sections {H 0 (Gr(k,m,W} mk defines a representation of the ind-group GL. When W is irreducibe this is an irreducibe representation of GL in the sense of [2]. 2. Definitions and statement of resuts We work over an arbitrary agebraicay cosed fied K. For any k and m k we may construct the Grassmannian Gr(k,m as foows: Let U k,m A mk be the open set parametrizing m k matrices of rank k. There is a free action of GL k on U k,m given by right matrix mutipication and Gr(k,m U k,m /GL k. The principa bunde U k,m Gr(k,m is the frame bunde; i.e., the fiber over a point of Gr(k,m corresponding to a inear subspace L is the set of a possibe bases for L in the vector space K m. When k 1, this gives the famiiar construction of P m 1 as the quotient of A m {0} by G m. If W is a (eft GL k -modue then we obtain a vector bunde on Gr(k,m by taking the quotient W U k,m GLk W where GL k acts diagonay on the product U k,m W. When W is the defining representation of GL k, then W is the dua of the tautoogica rank k subbunde of Gr(k,m. Likewise if W is the determinant character, then W is the ine bunde which gives the Pücker embedding. Since GL m acts on U k,m by eft matrix mutipication the quotient bunde W U k,m GLk W is GL m -equivariant, so the cohomoogy of W is a (eft GL m -modue. The main resut of this paper is the determination of these cohomoogy modues. To state our theorem we reca some notation about GL k -modues. Let T k GL k be the group of diagona matrices and et B k the group of upper trianguar matrices. Any nonincreasing sequence of integers ( 1, 2,... k determines a GL k -modue V (k which is defined as foows: The sequence of integers determines a character of T k which we aso ca. This character extends to a representation of B k. Let
GRASSMANNIANS AND REPRESENTATIONS 3 L be the ine bunde GL k Bk, where B k acts diagonay, 1 and set V (k H 0 (GL k /B k,l. When the characteristic of K is 0 then V (k is irreducibe. In any characteristic, the groups H i (GL k /B k,l vanish for i > 0 [1]. Remark 2.1. With this notation V and V restrict to the same representation of SL k if and ony if is constant (i.e. independent of. In this case V V D r where r and D is the determinant character of GL k. Let ( 1,..., k be a sequence of non-increasing integers and et V (k be the associated representation of GL k. Let V be the corresponding vector bunde on Gr(k, m. Theorem 2.2. (a If k 0, then H 0 (Gr(k,m,V V (m, and H i (Gr(k,m,V 0 for i > 0. Here V (m denotes the GL m -modue with highest weight ( 1,...,... k,0,...,0. (b If k < 0, then for sufficienty arge m, H i (Gr(k,m,V 0 for a i. 3. Bott-Bore-Wei theory for paraboics The materia here is we known, but we do not know a reference with agebraic proofs. Let H be an affine agebraic group and et π: X Y be an H- principa bunde. 2 If F is an H-equivariant O X -modue, set F H to be subsheaf of invariant sections of π F. Given an O Y -modue G, π G π 1 G π 1 O Y O X has a natura H-action given by the action of H on O X. Because H acts freey, the functors G π G and F F H are inverse to each other. Let X π Y and X Y be principa H-bundes. Let q: X X be a H-equivariant. Then there is an induced map p: Y Y such that the diagram X q X π π (1 Y p Y commutes. 1 In [3, p.393] the ine bunde whose goba sections is the highest weight modue V is denoted L. 2 This means [5, Definition 0.10] that π is fat, X Y is a geometric quotient and that X Y X is H-equivarianty isomorphic to H X. This definition impies that the action of H on X is free.
4 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO Lemma 3.1. Diagram (1 is cartesian. Proof. Since the diagram commutes there is an H-equivariant map X Y Y X. Now X Y and Y Y X Y are both principa bundes over Y. After base change by a fat surjective morphism X Y both bundes are triviaized. Thus the map of Y -schemes, X Y Y X is an isomorphism after fat surjective base change. Therefore it is an isomorphism. Lemma 3.2. Let X π Y q X π be a commutative (hence cartesian p Y diagram of principa H-bundes as above. Then for any H-equivariant O X -moduef there are natura isomorphismof O Y -modues(r i q F H R i p (F H for any i 0. Proof. Because F π F H, and cohomoogy commutes with base change [4, Proposition 9.3], there are natura isomorphisms R i q F π R i p F H. Pushing forward by π and taking H-invariants yieds the desired isomorphism. Let G be an agebraic group, B G a Bore subgroup and P B a paraboic subgroup. Let p: G/B G/P be the projection. Proposition 3.3. If is a B-modue, then G P H i (P/B,P B R i p (G B as G-equivariant bundes on G/P. Proof. The map G P/B G/B given by (g,pb gpb is a P- principa bunde, where P acts freey on G P/B by the formua q (g,pb (gq,q 1 pb where q P. Thus we have a commutative diagram with the vertica arrows proper and the horizonta arrows quotient maps by the free action of B. G P/B q G p G/B G/P Consider the P-equivariant ine bunde L G (P B on G P/B. Since q is a projection, R i q L G H i (P/B,P B. On the other hand L P G B so so by Lemma 3.2, G P H i (P/B,P B is naturay isomorphic to R i p (G B. Since this isomorphism is natura, it is equivariant for the G-actions on these bundes. 4. Proof of Theorem 2.2 Let G GL m, and et B m be the Bore subgroup of upper trianguar matrices. Let P be the paraboic subgroup of matrices of the form
( Ak U 0 A GRASSMANNIANS AND REPRESENTATIONS 5 witha k GL k, A GL andu anarbitraryk ( I U 0 A ( matrix. The subgroup N of matrices of the form is norma and P/N GL k. Lemma 4.1. U k,m is isomorphic to the homogeneous space G/N. Proof. Any m k matrix of maxima rank can be viewed as the first k coumns of a nonsinguar m m matrix. Since GL m acts transitivey on itsef by eft mutipication, it aso acts transitivey on the space U k,m of ( m k matrices of maxima rank. The stabiizer of the m k Ik matrix is the subgroup N GL 0 k. Using Lemma 4.1weobtainthewe known identificationofgr(k,m U k,m /GL k G/P. Likewise for any GL k -modue, the vector bunde U k,m GLk V isidentified with G P V where V is made into a P-modue via the surjective map P P/N GL k. Since P is a paraboic subgroup containing B we have a proper map G/B p G/P. Let L be the ine bunde on G/B corresponding to the weight ( 1,..., k,0,...,0. Then by Bott-Bore-Wei H 0 (G/B,L V (m. Lemma 4.2. p (L V as GL m equivariant bundes on Gr(k,m. Proof. By Proposition 3.3, p (L G P H 0 (P/B,P B L. Thus to prove the Lemma we must compute H 0 (P/B,P B L. Since P is a unipotent extension of GL k GL, the homogeneous spacep/b isisomorphictotheproductgl k /B k GL /B, where B k B (GL k I and B B (I k GL. Thus H 0 (P/B,P B H 0 (GL k /B k,gl k Bk ( B k H 0 (GL /B,GL B ( B. Since ( 1,..., k,0,...,0, its restriction B k is the highest weight vector ( 1,..., k, and its restriction to B is trivia. Part (a ofthe theorem nowfoows easiy fromlemma 4.2. First observethath 0 (Gr(k,m,V H 0 (G/P,p L H 0 (G/B,L. Ifaof the k sarenonnegativethenh 0 (G/B,L V (m andh i (G/B,L 0 for i > 0. It foows from the Leray spectra sequence that that H i (G/P,p L 0 as we. We now prove (b. Suppose that k < 0. It suffices to show that, for m sufficienty arge, that H i (G/B,G B 0 where is the character of the maxima torus with weight ( 1,..., k,0,...,0.
6 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO Let {0} V 0 V 1... V m be the fag fixed by the Bore subgroup of upper trianguar matrices B m GL m. For any < m et P be the paraboic subgroup fixing the subfag V 0 V 1... V. Then P P 1 and the fibers of the map p : G/P G/P 1 are isomorphic to the projective space P m. In this way the fag variety G/B G/P m 1 is reaized as being at the top of the tower of projective bundes G/B p m 1 p 2 G/P m 2... G/P 2 G/P1 P m 1. The group P is isomorphic to the product B GL m where B is the Bore group of upper trianguar matrices in GL. Thus, irreducibe representations of P are of the form χ W where χ is a character of the maxima torus in B and W is an irreducibe representation of GL m. If χ (a 1,...,a is a character of the maxima torus of B then the same argument used in the proof Proposition 3.3 shows that R i p (G P χ G P 1 H i (P 1 /P,P 1 P χ. Under the identification P 1 /P P m +1 the ine bunde P 1 P χ corresponds to O P m +1(a. If is a character of T m with k+1... m 0 then we may view as P -modue for k. The argument of the previous paragraph impies that H i (G/B,G B H i (G/P k,g Pk. If k < 0 then, for a j, H j (P,O P ( k 0 whenever m k + k. Thus R j p k (G/ Pk 0 for a j as ong as m is sufficienty arge. Therefore, by the Leray spectra sequence, it foows that H i (G/B,L 0 for a i. 5. Some expicit dimension computations We concude by using Theorem 2.2 to compute the dimensions of H 0 (Gr(k,m,V for some particuar V invoving symmetric powers and the determinant. To do this, we combine Theorem 2.2 with [3, Theorem 6.3] to obtain a convenient formua for the dimensions. Let ( 1,..., k be a sequence of nonincreasing integers, and et be the associated representation of GL k with V the corresponding vector bunde on Gr(k, m. V (k Lemma 5.1. If a i 0, then dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,V i<j i j +j i, j i where j runs from 2 to m, and k+1 m 0. The first proposition gives a symmetry resut about the dimension of a power of the determinant. Throughout the rest of this section, et
GRASSMANNIANS AND REPRESENTATIONS 7 V denote the standard k-dimensiona representation of GL k and V the corresponding tautoogica rank k vector bunde on Gr(k, m. Proposition 5.2. For a 0 < k m and > 0, dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,(det V dimh 0 (Gr(k,k +,(det V ( m +j 1. ( +j k 1 Proof. The partition associated to (det V is (,...,,0,...,0. Hence by Lemma 5.1, m k dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,(det V +j i j i m m!(+j 1!(j k 1!!(j 1!(+j k 1! dimh 0 (Gr(k,k +,(det V m i1 ( +j 1 ( +j k 1 k+ (!( +j 1!(j k 1! (!(m+j 1!(j 1! ( m+j 1 ( m+j k 1 k ( +j+k 1 ( +j 1 +j i j i i1 ( k+ +j 1 ( +j k 1 To show that the two dimensions are equa, we induct on. When 1, it is easy to compute that both dimensions are ( m k. Suppose now that s > 1, and we have proven that the dimensions are the same for s 1. The induction hypothesis gives us that Hence, etting s, s s 1 ( m+j 1 ( m+j k 1 ( m+s 1 ( m+s k 1 ( m+j 1 ( m+j k 1 ( m+s 1 ( m+s k 1. ( s+j+k 2 s 1 ( s+j 2 s 1 s+j 1 s+j +k 1. 8 8 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO The rightmost product is what we want, so it suffices to show that the product of the first two factors is one. Note that ( m+s k+1 s+j 1 s+j +k 1, which competes the proof. (s+ 1! (s 1! (s+m 1! (s+k 1! ( m+s 1 Remark 5.3. Assume that the characteristic of the ground fied is 0. If we fix k and and et m go to infinity, then sequence of irreducibe GL m representations {V (m (,...,} determines an irreducibe representation of the ind-group GL. Proposition 5.2 impies that the dimensions of the finite dimensiona representations V (m (,,..., are the same as the dimensions of the irreducibe GL k+ -modues V (+k (,...,. Remark 5.4. As noted in [2] the infinite Grassmannian Gr(k, is an ind-projective variety. For fixed, the sequence of GL m -modues {Sym ( k V m /V (m (,..., } is the ind-representation of GL corresponding to the degree component of the idea of Pücker reations for the embedding of Gr(k, into the infinite projective space given by the sequence of projective spaces {P( k V m }. (Here V m denotes the standard representation of GL m. Proposition 5.2 aows us to compute the sequence of dimensions of the Pücker reations in degree. In particuar the dimension of the GL m -modue of Pücker reations in degree is (( m ( k + m +j 1 ( +j k 1. Proposition 5.5. For a r 0 and 0 < k m, ( r +m 1 dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,Sym r V. r Proof. Use Lemma 5.1 and the partition (r,0,...,0. Proposition 5.6. For a r 0, 0, and 0 < k m, dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,Sym r V (det V ( r++m 1 ( m ( r +m 1 +j 2 ( r++k 1 ( +j k 1. As we woud expect, when 0, we get dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,Sym r V, and when r 0, we have (after a bit of manipuation the dimension of H 0 (Gr(k,m,(det V. Aso, the product over j is exacty

By Lemma 5.1, the dimension is k r +j 1 m r+ +j 1 m k +j i. j 1 j 1 j i j2 i2 The first product is ( r+k 1 r. Consider the second product. We have m r ++j 1 (r+ +m 1!(k 1! j 1 (r+ +k 1!(m 1! i2 (r++m 1! (r++k 1! (m 1! (k 1! (r+ +m 1! r!(+m 1!(k 1!!(r +k 1! r!(+m 1! (r+ +k 1!(m 1!!(r +k 1! ( +j k 1 Finay, mutipying a three products together competes the proof. Remark 5.7. Using Theorem 2.2 it is easy to show that if d k then H 0 (Gr(k,m,V d Vm d where V m is the standard representation of GL m. In particuar dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,V d m d. An interesting question is to determine whether there are reativey simpe formuas for the dimension of H 0 (Gr(k,m,V d (det V. If 0 then Theorem 2.2 gives the summation formua dimh 0 (Gr(k,m,V d (det V where the sum is over a k-eement partitions of d, m is the product of the hook engths in the tabeau corresponding to the partition m dimv (m + ( 1,... k, and V (m + refers to the GL m -modue with highest weight ( 1 +,... k +,0,...0. Unfortunatey, we have do not know how to simpify this sum. Other summation formuas can aso be obtained
10 DAN EDIDIN AND CHRISTOPHER A. FRANCISCO using the Riemann-Roch or ocaization theorems. When d < < 0, there is the added difficuty that some, but not a, of the sequences ( 1 +, 2 +,..., k +,0,...0 have negative entries, so the corresponding ine bundes on GL m /B m have no cohomoogy for sufficienty arge m.
