We present precise preictions for the processes e + e WW 4f(γ) at LEP2 an future Linear-Collier (LC) energies obtaine with the Monte Carlo generator. The program inclues the complete O(α) electroweak raiative corrections to e + e WW 4f in the ouble-pole approximation (DPA). While the virtual corrections are treate in DPA, the calculation of the bremsstrahlung corrections is base on the full lowest-orer matrix elements to the processes e + e 4f +γ. This asymmetric treatment of virtual an real photons requires a careful matching of the arising infrare an collinear singularities. We also take into account higher-orer initial-state photon raiation via the structure-function metho. Here, we briefly escribe the approach, give numerical results for the total W-pair prouction cross sections, confront them with LEP2 ata, an stuy the impact of the raiative corrections on angular an W-invariant-mass istributions at LEP2 an LC energies. INTRODUCTION The precise measurements of the W-boson mass an the W-pair prouction cross sections as well as the irect observation of triple-gauge-boson couplings [1] at LEP2 provie further important precision tests of the Stanar Moel of electroweak interactions. To match the experimental accuracy at LEP2 an at a future linear collier (LC), the knowlege of the observe cross sections beyon leaing orer in perturbation theory is crucial [2 4]. For instance, at LEP2 the total W-pair prouction cross sections nee to be known theoretically to better than 1% [4], which requires to go even beyon universal raiative corrections such as the running of the electromagnetic coupling, corrections connecte to the ρ parameter, the Coulomb singularity, an leaing photonic corrections. The full treatment of the processes e + e 4f at the one-loop level is of enormous complexity [] an poses severe gauge-invariance problems when introucing
the finite W-boson with. Fortunately, for W-pair prouction at LEP2 an at not too high LC Center-of-Mass (CM) energies 1, it is sufficient for the envisione theoretical precision to take into account only raiative corrections to those contributions that are enhance by two resonant W propagators. The use of this so-calle ouble-pole approximation (DPA) for the calculation of the pair prouction of unstable particles has been propose in [6]. Recently ifferent versions of the DPA for the calculation of raiative corrections to off-shell W-pair prouction have been escribe in the literature [7 12]. Here we present results of the first complete calculation of the O(α) corrections for off-shell W-pair prouction in the DPA that has been implemente in a Monte Carlo (MC) generator. The resulting MC program is calle, an numerical results for the W-pair prouction cross sections an various istributions at LEP2 an LC CM energies are provie in [4,11,12] an [13], respectively. In [11] we also presente a etaile escription of the approach, iscusse the intrinsic theoretical uncertainty of our version of the DPA, an compare our results with existing calculations (see also [4]). In the following sections we give a brief overview of the approach an provie numerical results for the total W-pair prouction cross sections, angular an W-invariant-mass istributions at the typical LEP2 an LC CM energies s = 2 GeV an GeV, respectively. For the same setup as escribe in [4], we also present a comparison of results with the results of the Monte Carlo generator [8,9] at s = GeV. THE RACOONWW APPROACH The raiative corrections to the processes e + e WW 4f consist of virtual corrections as well as of real corrections originating from the processes e + e WW 4f + γ. In only the virtual one-loop corrections are treate in DPA, incluing the full set of factorizable an non-factorizable O(α) corrections to e + e WW 4f for massless fermions. The factorizable contributions comprise those virtual one-loop corrections that can either be assigne to the W-pair prouction or to the W-ecay subprocesses. The corresponing matrix element in DPA M e+ e WW 4f DPA = R(k2 W + = M2 W, k 2 W = M2 W) (k 2 W + M 2 )(k 2 W M 2 ) (1) is efine by the gauge-invariant resiue R(MW 2, M2 W ) an the W propagators with complex poles at M 2 = MW 2 im W Γ W. The one-loop corrections to this resiue can be euce from the known results for on-shell W-pair prouction [14] an W ecay []. The non-factorizable corrections [16] connect the prouction an 1) Above. 1 TeV at least the leaing electroweak logarithms at the two-loop level shoul be taken into account.
ecay processes. In DPA, they comprise all oubly-resonant contributions that are not alreay inclue in the factorizable corrections. Only those iagrams contribute where a photon with energy E γ < Γ W is exchange between the prouction an ecay subprocesses; all other non-factorizable iagrams are negligible in DPA. A typical iagram contributing to the non-factorizable corrections is shown in Fig. 1. The calculation of the real O(α) corrections is base on the full lowest-orer matrix element to e + e 4f +γ for massless fermions as escribe in [17]. In this way, we avoi potential problems with a efinition of a DPA for real photons with energies E γ Γ W. However, since we treat virtual an real photons ifferently, the former in DPA but the latter completely, a careful matching of the arising infrare (IR) an collinear singularities is neee: first the singularities are extracte from the real photon contribution by using either a subtraction [18] or the phase-space-slicing metho. Both methos are implemente in. As usual, these IR- an collinear-singular contributions factorize into the Born cross section an a factor containing the IR- an collinear-singular logarithms, where the epenence on the photon phase space has been partially integrate out analytically. The remaining part of the real corrections is free of singularities an can be evaluate with the usual MC techniques. Then, we extract those singular parts from the IR- an collinear-singular contributions that exactly match the singular parts of the virtual corrections, replace the full Born cross section by the DPA Born cross section, an a this moifie part to the virtual corrections. This moification only introuces ambiguities that are smaller than the accuracy of the DPA an leas to a proper matching of IR an collinear singularities. Beyon O(α), inclues soft-photon exponentiation an leaing higher-orer initial-state raiation (ISR) up to O(α 3 ) via the structure-function approach (see e.g. [3] an references therein). Also the leaing-orer effects from ρ an α are taken into account by using the G µ scheme. By efault, QCD corrections are taken into account by consiering a multiplicative factor (1 + α s /π) for each haronically ecaying W boson. This affects the W-ecay with in the W propagators an the amplitues to e + e 4f for quarks in the final state when the full phase space for gluons is integrate over. In the total cross section these so-calle naive QCD factors cancel. If the gluon phase space is not integrate over, the virtual an real QCD corrections to e + e 4f W W FIGURE 1. 5 have to be calculate, which is technically similar to the calculation of the photonic corrections. This option is also supporte by. NUMERICAL RESULTS For the numerical results we use the following parameters: G µ = GeV 2, α = 1/ , M W = 8.3 GeV, Γ W = GeV, M Z = GeV, Γ Z = GeV, m t = GeV, M H = GeV, m e = kev, α s =.119. (2) We work in the fixe-with scheme an fix the weak mixing angle by using c w = M W /M Z, s 2 w = 1 c 2 w. These parameters are over-complete but self-consistent. Instea of α we use G µ to parametrize the lowest-orer matrix element, i.e. we use the effective coupling 2Gµ MW 2 α Gµ = s2 w (3) π in the lowest-orer matrix element. This parameterization has the avantage that all higher-orer contributions associate with the running of the electromagnetic coupling from q 2 = to q 2 = M 2 W an the leaing universal two-loop m t-epenent corrections are alreay absorbe in the Born cross section. In the relative O(α) corrections, on the other han, we use α = α(), since in the real corrections, which yiel the bulk of the remaining corrections, the scale of the real photon is zero. The W-boson with given above is calculate incluing the electroweak an QCD one-loop corrections. In the following, for the lowest-orer contributions only the CC3 iagrams are taken into account. Our best results comprise the CC3 Born cross sections an the correcte cross sections incluing all the raiative corrections briefly escribe in the previous section (more etails can be foun in [11]), i.e. the electroweak one-loop corrections in DPA, the exact O(α) photon raiation base on the full matrix element for e + e 4fγ, higher-orer ISR up to O(α 3 ), an naive QCD O(α s ) corrections. Figure 2 shows a comparison of the results of for the total CC3 W-pair prouction cross section (see also [4]) an of other Monte Carlo preictions with recent LEP2 ata, as given by the LEP Electroweak Working Group [19] for the Winter 2 conferences. The ata are in goo agreement with the preictions of an [8,9]. At the time of the conferences in Winter 2 the preictions of were about..7% larger than those of, which is somewhat larger than the intrinsic DPA ambiguity. Meanwhile, however, the main source of this iscrepancy was foun [4], an the new
[9] results iffer from the ones of only by about.3% at LEP2 CM energies. More etails on the conceptual ifferences of the two generators, as well as a etaile comparison of numerical results for LEP2 energies, can be foun in [4] an below. Figure 2 also inclues the preiction provie by GENTLE [2], which is 2 2.% larger than those from an. This ifference is ue to the neglect of non-leaing, non-universal O(α) corrections in GENTLE. In summary, the comparison between SM preictions an LEP2 ata reveals evience of non-leaing electroweak raiative corrections beyon the level of universal effects. In the following we stuy the impact of the raiative corrections on the W- invariant-mass istributions an angular istributions an use the separation an recombination cuts of [4,11]: 1. All photons within a cone of egrees aroun the beams are treate as invisible, i.e. their momenta are isregare when calculating angles, energies, an invariant masses. 2. Next, the invariant masses M fγ of the photon with each of the charge finalstate fermions are calculate. If the smallest one is smaller than a certain cutoff M rec or if the energy of the photon is smaller than 1 GeV, the photon is combine with the charge final-state fermion that leas to the smallest M fγ, i.e. the momenta of the photon an the fermion are ae an associate with the momentum of the fermion, an the photon is iscare. 2 LEP Preliminary σ WW [pb] Gentle E cm [GeV] FIGURE 2. Finally, all events are iscare in which one of the charge final-state fermions is within a cone of 1 egrees aroun the beams. No other cuts are applie. We consier two recombination cuts: M rec = GeV (bare) an M rec = 2 GeV (calo). As mentione before, contains two branches for the treatment of IR an collinear singularities, one following the subtraction metho of [18] an one the phase-space-slicing metho. While these two branches use the same matrix elements, the Monte Carlo integration is performe completely inepenently, thus proviing us with a powerful numerical check of. In the following we present numerical results of both branches of. In Table 1 we provie the CC3 Born an best results for the total W-pair prouction cross sections for the semileptonic process e + e u µ ν µ (γ) at the CM energies s = 2 GeV an GeV with the bare or calo cuts applie. The results obtaine when using the phase-space-slicing metho agree well with those of the subtraction metho, i.e. within the statistical errors of..9%. In Figs. 3, 4, an we show the relative corrections σ/σ Born 1 (in per cent), where σ Born an σ enote the CC3 Born an best preictions, respectively, for a variety of istributions for e + e u µ ν µ (γ) at the LEP2 CM energy s =2 GeV. The relative corrections to the W-invariant-mass istributions are shown in Figs. 3 an 4 for the bare an calo recombination cuts. The invariant masses are obtaine from the four-momenta of the ecay fermions of the W bosons after eventual recombination with the photon four-momentum. They are particularly sensitive to the treatment of the photons, an thus a strong epenence of the relative corrections on the recombination cut can be observe. The observe istortion of the W-invariant-mass istributions is of particular interest when the W-boson mass is reconstructe from the W-ecay proucts. A etaile iscussion of the istortion of the invariant-mass istributions of the W bosons an their origin has been given in [12]. The istributions obtaine from the phase-space-slicing an subtraction methos are compatible with each other. The integration errors are larger further away from the W resonance because of the ecreasing statistics. For the angular istributions, we efine all angles in the laboratory system, which is the CM system of the initial state. The relative
corrections to the istributions in the cosines of the W + prouction angle θ W + an of the ecay angle θ W µ are shown in Fig. when bare cuts are applie. In contrast to the invariant-mass istributions, the angular istributions harly epen on the recombination proceure apart from very large angles where the cross section is small. Thus, similar results are obtaine when the calo recombination cut is use [11]. The istributions obtaine with the subtraction an the phase-space-slicing branches of agree with each other within the integration errors, i.e. in general to better than.%. Comparison with at s = GeV In [4] a tune comparison of an of preictions for e + e WW 4f(γ) observables at LEP2 CM energies has been performe. This comparison together with a stuy of the intrinsic uncertainty of the DPA with, as well as a comparison with a semi-analytical calculation [7], enable the assignment of an overall theoretical uncertainty of.4% to the state-of-the-art MC preictions for the total W-pair prouction cross sections at 2 GeV [4]. This confirms the naively expecte DPA accuracy of about.% for s > 18 GeV for the total CC3 cross sections. In [11] we stuie the intrinsic ambiguities of the O(α) corrections in DPA also at GeV an foun them to be.1% for the total W-pair prouction cross section an a few per mil whenever W-pair prouction ominates the consiere observable. A comparison of an results for the total W-pair prouction cross sections at 2 GeV an GeV, when no or bare cuts are applie, is given in Table 2. The relative ifferences are at the.3% level, which is of the orer of the intrinsic ambiguity of any DPA implementation. In Figs. 6, 7, an 8 we show the preictions of the subtraction-metho branch of together with the preictions of (scheme A) [9] for the relative corrections to the W-invariant-mass an cosθ W + istributions to e + e u µ ν µ (γ) at GeV when bare or calo cuts are applie. In contrast to the LEP2 case, the raiative corrections now mostly increase the Born cross sections
