9 Measurements for the prediction of naturalness (MONAT) Studio project To develop studio project to enable UK companies to benefit from EC Framework Programme (FP6) Studio project criteria Approx. 1 year duration 50% industrial contribution (15% cash, 35% in-kind (industrial trials, meetings, materials and equipment supply, etc) / 50% DTI funded At least 3 industrial partners 9

10 Proposed project plan 1) Kick off meeting: to agree detailed project plans, review existing data, identify and plan test programme 2) To develop instrument for characterising the frictional interaction between the human and surfaces 3) To identify the relevant data sets required by specifiers and designers to predict the surface s perceived quality and durability, and establish appropriate procedures for their determination 4) To characterise a range of surfaces of industrial importance (e.g. automotive interior, furnishings) 5) To investigate and quantify the effect of environmental influences (e.g. water) on the characterisation of the frictional interaction, for selected surfaces 6) To investigate and quantify the effect of degradation (e.g. mechanical) on the characterisation of the frictional interaction, for selected surfaces 7) To develop models to predict the perceived quality of those surfaces 8) Project meetings (approx. every 4 months) 9) Prepare report on characterisation of surfaces 10
