ON SOME CLASS OF SUMS ANDREI K. SVININ Abstract. We consider some class of the sums which naturally include the sums of powers of integers. We suggest a number of conjectures concerning a representation of these sums. arxiv: v [math.co] 8 Oct 206. Introduction It is common of knowledge that the sum of powers of integers n S m n := q m. is a polynomial σ m n in n of degree m +. This proposition can be showed by using Pascal s elementary proof see, for example []. Polynomials σ m n for any integer m are defined in terms of the Bernoulli numbers: σ m n = m m+ q B q n m q+. m+ q The numbers B k, in turn, are defined by a recursion k k + B q = 0, B 0 =. q They were discovered by Bernoulli in 73 but as follows from [4], they were known by Faulhaber before this time. Faulhaber stheoremsaysthat forany oddm 3, sum.isexpressedasapolynomial of S n. It is common of knowledge that S n = nn+/2. Let t := nn+. Then Faulhaber s theorem asserts that for any k, S 2k+ n can beexpressed as a polynomial in Q[t]. These polynomials are referred as Faulhaber s ones. Jacobi showed in [0] that S 2k n is expressed as a polynomial in 2n+Q[t]. There exists a variety of different modifications and generalizations of Faulhaber s theorem in the literature. Faulhaber itself considered r-fold sums Sm r n which are successively defined by n Sm r n = Sm r q, r beginning from Sm 0 n := nm. He observed that Sm r n can be expressed as a polynomial in t := nn+r if m r is even []. Date: October 9, 206.
2 ANDREI K. SVININ In this paper we consider some class of sums S k,j n which include classical sums of powers of integers. with odd m = 2k +. These sums will be introduced in section 2 and 3. Particular case, namely S k,j, presents some class of binomial sums studied in [5]. Our crucial idea comes from this work. We briefly formulate the results of this article in section 4. In section 5, we formulate our main conjecture concerning a representation of thesumss k,j nintermsofsomepolynomialswhosecoefficientsrationally dependonn. In section 6, we discuss the relationship of this representation with a possible generalization of Faulhaber s theorem. In section 7, we show explicit form of some n-dependent coefficients of these polynomials and suppose the relationship of these coefficients to the number of q-points in simple symmetric 2k + -Venn diagram. 2. The sums s k,j n Let us define the numbers {C j,r n : j,r = 0,...,jn } in the following way. Namely, let n a q+ j = jn C j,q na q+j, 2. whereais an arbitrary auxiliary nonzeropositive number, taking into account that a l a m = a l+m. For example, in the case n =, we have only C j,0 n =. Clearly, in the case n = 2, we get a+a 2 j = j that is, C j,q 2 is a binomial coefficient. From n a q+ j = j n j a j+q, q n C j,q na q+j a q+ = C j,0 na j +C j,0 n+c j, na j+ + +C j,0 n+ +C j,n na j+n + C j, n+ +C j,n n a j+n + +C j,j n na jn we deduce that r C j,r n = C j,q n, 2.2 q=r n+ assuming that C j,q n = 0 for q < 0 and q > j n. In the case n = 2, relation 2.2 becomes well known property for binomial coefficients: j j j = +. r r r
ON SOME CLASS OF SUMS 3 Clearly, thecoefficient C j,r ncanbepresentedasapropersumofmultinomialcoefficients. Putting a = into 2., we get the property jn C j,q n = n j for these numbers which evidently generalize well-known property of binomial coefficients. Also it is easy to get jn qc j,q n = jn n j. 2 With the coefficients C j,q n we define the sum s k,j n as s k,j n := jn C j,q nx j+q, where x r := r 2k+. Remark that s k, n = S 2k+ n. For example, it is evident that { q +, q = 0,...,n 2, C 2,q n = 2n q, q = n,...,2n 2. Then s k,2 n := Shifting q q 2, we get = s k,2 n = 2n 2 C 2,q nx q+2 n 2 q +x q+2 + n q x q + 2n 2 q=n 2n q=n+ Since q = 2n q + 2n 2q +2, then n s k,2 n = 2n 2q +2x q + Let S k,j n := {λ} B j,jn 2n q x q+2 2n q +x q. 2n 3. The sums S k,j n and S k,j n 2n q +x q. 2.3 { λ 2k+ +λ 2 n 2k+ + +λ j jn+n 2k+} with B j,jn := {λ k : λ λ j jn}. Let us define j jn+ S k,j n = s k,j q n. 3. q It is obvious that S k, n = S k, n = s k, n = S 2k+ n.
4 ANDREI K. SVININ Conjecture 3.. S k,j n = S k,j n. 3.2 Using simple arguments we deduce that in the case j = 2 { S k,2 n = λ 2k+ +λ 2 n 2k+} = {λ} B 2,2n 2n 2n q +x q + 2n 2n q +x n q Notice that we have several x r s with negative subscript r in 3.3. Clearly, we must put x r = x r. Taking into account this rule, we rewrite the second sum in 3.3 as Adding to 3.3 n n+qx q n n qx q = 2 n 2n 2q +2x q + and taking into account 2.3, we finally get n qx q. n 2n 2q +2x q S k,2 n = s k,2 n+2n+2 n x q 2n+ = s k,2 n+ s k, n = S k,2 n. In the case n =, the sum 3. becomes 4. Special case of the sums 3. j 2j S k,j = j q 2k+. 4. q This type of the sums was studied in [2], [4], [5]. More exactly, the authors of these works considered binomial sums of the form 2j S m j = It is evident that S k,j = S 2k+ j/2. 2j q j q m. Some bibliographical remarks are as follows. Bruckman in [2] asked to prove that 2j S 3 j = j 2. Strazdins in [4] solved this problem and conjectured that S j 2k+ j = P k x 2j x=j j with some monic polynomial Pk x for any k 0. Tuenter showed in [5]
ON SOME CLASS OF SUMS 5 that it is almost true. More exactly, he proved that there exists a sequence of polynomials P k x sush that S 2k+ j = P k x x=j j 2j 2j! = P k x x=j j j!j!. One can see that polynomial P k x is monic only for k = 0,. Next, we will describe these polynomials. The following proposition [5] is verified by direct computations. Proposition 4.. The sums S k,j enjoy recurrence relation S k,j = j 2 S k,j 2j2j S k,j. 4.2 Remark 4.2. It was in fact proved for the sums S 2k+ j in [5]. In what follows we introduce the sequence of positive integer numbers: g =, g j = j j j +q, j 2. j! It should be noted that the sequence {g j : j } satisfy the recurrent relation 2j + g j+ = 2 g j. 4.3 j The numbers g j are given in the following table: j g j They constitute A integer sequence in [3]. Let us write S k,j = P k,j g j with some numbers P k,j to be calculated. Taking into account 4.3, it can be easily seen that 4.2 is valid if the relation does. P k+,j = j 2 P k,j P k,j +jp k,j 4.4 Now we need in polynomials studied in [5] which are defined by a recurrent relation P k+ x = x 2 P k x P k x +xp k x 4.5 with initial condition P 0 x =. Thefirsteight polynomials yielded by4.5 areas follows. P 0 x = P x = x, P 2 x = x2x, P 3 x = x6x 2 8x+3, P 4 x = x24x 3 60x 2 +54x 7, P 5 x = x20x 4 480x x 2 556x+55, P 6 x = x720x x x x x P 7 x = x 5040x x x x x x
6 ANDREI K. SVININ Introducing a recursion operator R := x 2 Λ +xλ, where Λ is a shift operator acting as Λfx = fx +, one can write P k x = R k. One could notice that the polynomial P k x has k! as a coefficient at x k. In addition, as was noticed in [5], the constant terms of the polynomials P k x/x constitute a sequence of the Genocchi numbers with opposite sign, that is, G 2 =, G 4 =, G 6 = 3, G 8 = 7, G 0 = 55, G 2 = 2073,... Recall that the Genocchi numbers are defined with the help of generating function 2x e x + = q G q x q q! and are related to the Bernoulli numbers as G 2k = 2 2 2k B 2k. Comparing 4.5 with 4.4 we conclude that P k,j = P k x x=j. Remark 4.3. As was noticed in [5], polynomials P k x can be obtained as a special case of Dumont-Foata polynomials of three variables [3]. 5. General case Let t := nn+. Our main conjecture is as follows. Conjecture 5.. There exists some polynomials P k t,x in x of degree k whose coefficients rationally depend on t such that where S k,j n = tk+ 2 k+p kjg j n, g n =, g j n := j j jn+q. j! The first eight polynomials P k t,x are P 0 t,x =, P t,x = x, P 2 t,x = x P 4 t,x = x P 3 t,x = x 6x 2 6t+ x+ 4t+2 3t 3t 2 2x 2t+, 3t, 24x 3 40t+ x t+2 t t 2 x 24t+3 +8t 2 5t 3 P 5 t,x = x 20x 4 320t+ x 3 06t +2 + t 3t 2 x 2 60t+3 +32t 2 t 3 x+ 80 t+ 4 +t 2 t+ 3t 4,,

One can check that P k t,x t=2 = P k x, where P k x are Tuenter s polynomials introduced above. It could be noticed that coefficients of the polynomials P k t,x have a special form. Namely, let P k t,x = x p k,0 tx k p k, tx k k p k,k t. 5. Based on actual calculations, it can be supposed the following. Conjecture 5.2. The coefficients of t-dependent polynomial 5. are given by p k,j t = r k,jt t j, where the polynomials r k,j t are of the form m r k,j t = α k,j,q t 2q t+ j 3q with rational positive nonzero numbers α k,j,q. Here m 0, by definition, is the result of division of the number j by 3 with some remainder l, that is, j = 3m+l. It should be noticed that the last conjecture is quite strong. With this conjecture the number N k of parameters which entirely define polynomial P k t,x is presented in the following table: k N k It is the A00840 integer sequence in [3]. We have in fact verified conjecture 5.2 up to k = and calculated all corresponding coefficients α k,j,q..
8 ANDREI K. SVININ It is evident that for all polynomials P k t,x we have p k,0 t = k!. Actual calculations show that k k + α k,,0 = k!, k 2, 9 α k,2,0 = k 2k +5k2 +k 3 k!, k 3, 80 α k,3,0 = k 3k +75k4 70k 3 724k k 690 k!, k 4, α k,3, = k 3k +2k2 4k +5 k!, k 4, Looking at these patterns it can be supposed that α k,j,0 = k jk +p j kk!, k j + with some polynomial p j k of degree 2j Faulhaber s theorem With the polynomials P k t,x we are able, for example, to calculate j S 0,j n = t j jn+q, S,j n = t2 2j! 4 j 2 j j! S 2,j n = t2 2 {3j t } j 2 j jn+q, j! jn+q, S 3,j n = t2 { 9j 2 8j +2t 2 8j 4t+2 } j 2 j jn+q, 24 j! S 4,j n = t2 { 5j 3 25j 2 +5j 3t 3 25j 2 30j +0t 2 20 j 2 j +5j 9t 3} jn+q, j! Looking at these patterns we could suggest the following. Conjecture 6.. S k,j n is expressed as a polynomial in j jn+qq[t]. For j =, conjecture 6. becomes well known Faulhaber s theorem [6] which was, in fact, proved by Jacobi in [0]. The first eight Faulhaber s polynomials are as follows: S 0, n = t 2, S,n = t2 4, S 2,n = t2 2 2t, S 3,n = t2 3t 2 4t+2, 24 S 4, n = t2 2t 3 5t 2 +6t 3, S 5, n = t S 6, n = t t 4 8t 3 +7t 2 20t+0, 60t 5 350t 4 +48t t t 382, S 7, n = t2 48 t2 3t 6 24t 5 +2t 4 352t 3 +78t 2 840t+420 In general, one usually write S k, n = 2k + k A k+ q t k q+. where A k 0 = and A k k = 0. One knows quite a lot about the coefficients Ak q. Jacobi proved that the coefficients A k q enjoy the recurrence relation 2k +22k +A k q = 2k q +2k 2q +A k+ q +k q +k q +2A k+ q and tabulated some of them. It was shown by Knuth in [] that these coefficients satisfy quite simple implicit recurrence relation r k q A k q = 0, r > r + 2q which yields an infinite triangle system of equations from which one easily obtains A k A k = k 2k 6 A k, A k 2 = k 3k k7k 8, = k 4k 2k k3k2 89k +48, = k 5k 3k 2k k27k3 69k k 384,

A bivariate generating function for the coefficients A k q was obtained in [8]. k 3 7. The conjectural relationship of the coefficients p k,k t to simple symmetric Venn diagrams Let us rewrite the coefficients p k,k t being expressed via n, that is, For example, p k,k n = p k,k t t=nn+. p,0 n =, p 2, n = 2 n 2 +n+ 3 nn+, p 3,2n = 4 n 4 +2n 3 +3n 2 +2n+ 3 n 2 n+ 2, p 5,4 n = 80 3 p 4,3 n = 24 5 n 6 +3n n n n2 +3n+ n 3 n+ 3, n 8 +4n 7 +n 6 +9n 5 +23n 4 +9n 3 +n 2 +4n+ n 4 n+ 4, p 6,5 n = 222 n 0 +5n 9 +7n 8 +38n 7 +6n 6 +7n 5 +6n 4 +38n 3 +7n 2 +5n+ 05 n 5 n+ 5,... Looking at these patterns we see that v k n p k,k n = c k n k n+ k, 7. where v k n is a monic polynomial of degree 2k 2. All these polynomials are invariant with respect to transformation v k n n 2k 2 v k n. 7.2 Also it worth to remark that the polynomial v 4 n unlike the others, has several fractional coefficients. Conjecture 7.. Polynomials v k n are given by 2k 2k q + q+ v k n = n 2k q, 7.3 2k + while the coefficients c k are expressed via Bernoulli numbers as c k = 2k +2 k B 2k. 7.4
ON SOME CLASS OF SUMS Let us notice that if 7.3 is valid then the invariance of corresponding polynomial with respect to 7.4 is obvious in virtue of the invariance of binomial coefficients. Let p = 2k+. It is known that if p is simple then p q + q+ Tp,q =, p 5 p is the number of q-points on the left side of a crosscut of simple symmetric p-venn diagram [2]. This integer sequence is known as A29539 sequence in [3]. It is evident that the row sum p 2 t p := Tp,q = 2p p can be calculated as v k n n=. The Fermat quotients 2 p /p for simple p constitute integer sequence A in [3]. Taking into account 7. and 7.4, we get p k,k n n= = 22 2k B 2k = G 2k. 8. Discussion In the paper we have considered some class of sums S k,j n and conjectured a representation of these sums in terms of a sequence of the polynomials {P k t,x : k 0}. This assumption is resulted from computational experiments and supported by a large amount of actual calculations. For n =, we get the well-known results from [5]. This also confirms our assumptions. The conjectural relationship of several coefficients of polynomials P k t,x being expressed via n to simple symmetric Venn diagrams is quite unexpected and requires explanation.
