2 Chart of Conversion Fators Prefae Approximate Conversions The onversion fators in the following tables are for onversion of our ustomary (English) units of measurement tosi*units, and for onveniene, reiproals are shown for onverting Sl units bak to the English system. The first table ontains rule-of-thumb figures, useful for "getting the feel" of Sl units or mental estimation. The sueeding tables ontain fators aurate to 3 or more signifiant figures. Please. refer to known referene volumes for additional auray, as well as for fators dealing with other sientifi notation involving Sl units. * International System of Units (1) Multiply Ax 8 To Get D A B (2) Multiply D x C To Get A D inh (in) foot (ft) yard (yd) mile (mi) nautial mile square inh (in 2 ) square foot (ft 2 ) are (43560 ft2) gallon (US) barrel (42 gal) oune (oz) pound (lb av) short ton (2,000 lb) pound (mass)/foot (lb/ft) Example (1): Convert 6 inhes to entimeters 6(A) x 2.5(8) = 15 em (D) This same format is used throughout this metriation guide. To onvert temperature in Celsius to o Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32. Footnote Multipliation Fators Prefix SISymbol In Sl pratie, number notation is made by separating digits into groups of three on either side of a deimal point, with a spae or half spae between groups. Amerian Petroleum Institute publiations show onversion fators in this manner, written as a number between one and ten with six or less deimal plaes. The number is followed by E (for exponent), a plus or minus symbol, and two digits whih indiate the power of 10 by whih the number must be multiplied to obtain the orret value. For example, E+, 03 is x 10 3 or In writing, Sl prefixes should be used to denote order of magnitude, as a substitute for writing powers of 10. Following is a hart of Sl prefixes: = = = = = = = = = = = = = = tera gig a mega kilo heto* deka* dei* enti* milli miro nano pi o femto atto T G M k h da d m }J n p f a *To be avoided where possible. 6 7
