TITLE OF RESEARCH TOPIC: Nuclear structure and its implications for astrophysics within the relativistic mean field model THESIS SUPERVISOR: Prof. S. K. Patra Professor Institute of Physics Bhubaneswar, India patra@iopb.res.in AREAS OF RESEARCH INTEREST: Nuclear Physics: Ground state properties of finite nuclei; Nuclear energy density functionals; Relativistic mean-field and Skyrme Hartree-Fock models; Parity doublets; Nucleon density clustering; Multifragmentation fission; Density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy; Neutron distributions and neutron skins, Equation of state of dense nuclear matter 3
4 Nuclear Astrophysics Static and rotating neutron star structure (mass, radius, moment of inertia, quadrupole deformation, tidal deformability); Post-Newtonian theory with tidal deformation, Hyperon stars with compositions, gravitational waves Numerical Simulations Covariance and correlation analysis Brief Summary of the Research Work: We studied the ground and excited states properties for Zr isotopes starting from proton to neutron drip-lines using the relativistic and non-relativistic mean field formalisms with BCS and Bogoliubov pairing. The celebrity NL3* and SLy4 parameter sets are used in the calculations. We found spherical ground and low-lying largedeformed excited states in most of the isotopes. Several couples of parity doublets [P1] configurations are found, while analyzing the single-particle energy levels of the largedeformed configurations. The properties of recently predicted thermally fissile Th and U isotopes [P3,P4]are studied within the framework of relativistic mean field (RMF) approach using axially deformed basis. We calculated the ground, first intrinsic excited state for highly neutron-rich thorium and uranium isotopes. The possible modes of decay like α-decay and β- decay are analyzed. We found that the neutron-rich isotopes are stable against α-decay, however they are very much unstable against β-decay. The life time of these nuclei predicted to be tens of second against β- decay. If these nuclei utilize before their decay time, a lots of energy can be produced with the help of multi-fragmentation fission. Also, these nuclei have a great implication in astrophysical point of view. In some cases, we found the isomeric states with energy range from 2 to 3 MeV and three maxima in the potential energy surface of Th and U isotopes. We employ Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) model with NL3 parametrization to investigate the ground state properties of superheavy nucleus, Z 4
5 = 124 [P2]. The nuclei selected (from among complete isotopic series) for detailed investigation show that the nucleon density at the center is very low and therefore, these nuclei can be treated as semi-bubble nuclei. The considerable shell gap appears at neutron numbers N = 172, 184 and 198 showing the magicity corresponding to these numbers. The results are compared with the macro-microscopic Finite Range Droplet Model (FRDM) wherever possible. We systematically study the tidal deformability [P5] for neutron and hyperon stars using relativistic mean field (RMF) equations of state (EOSs). The tidal effect plays an important role during the early part of the evolution of compact binaries. Although, the deformability associated with the EOSs has a small correction, it gives a clean gravitational wave signature in binary inspiral. These are characterized by various Love numbers k l (l=2, 3, 4), that depend on the EOS of a star for a given mass and radius. The tidal effect of star could be efficiently measured through advanced LIGO detector from the final stages of inspiraling binary neutron star (BNS) merger. The structure effects [P11] of the fission fragments on their yields are studied within the statistical theory with the inputs, like, excitation energies and level density parameters for the fission fragments at a given temperature calculated using the temperature dependent relativistic mean field formalism (TRMF). For the comparison, the results are also obtained using the finite range droplet model. At temperatures T = 1 2 Men, the structural effects of the fission fragments influence their yields. It is also seen that at T = 3 MeV, the fragments become spherical and the fragments distribution peaks at a close shell or near close shell nucleus. A new parameter set [P13] is generated for finite and infinite nuclear system within the effective field theory motivated relativistic mean field (ERMF) formalism. The isovector part of the ERMF model employed in the present study includes the coupling of nucleons to the δ and ρ mesons and the cross-coupling of ρ mesons to the σ and ω mesons. The results for the finite and infinite nuclear systems obtained using our parameter set are in harmony with the available experimental data. We find the maximum mass of the neutron star to be 2.03M and yet 5
6 a relatively smaller radius at the canonical mass, km, as required by the available data. LIST OF PUBLICATIONS : 2017: I.
