A PRIMALITY CRITERION BASED ON A LUCAS CONGRUENCE ROMEO MEŠTROVIĆ arxiv: v [math.nt] 29 Jul 204 ABSTRACT. Let p be a prime. In 878 É. Lucas proved that the congruence ( ) p ( ) (mod p) holds for any nonnegative integer {0,,...,p }. The converse statement was given in Problem 494 of Mathematics Magazine proposed in 997 by E. Deutsch and I.M. Gessel. In this note we generalize this converse assertion by the following result: If n > and q > are integers such that ( ) n ( ) (mod q) for every integer {0,,...,n }, thenq is a prime andnis a power ofq.. INTRODUCTION AND THE MAIN RESULT As noticed in [6], many great mathematicians of the nineteenth century considered problems involving binomial coefficients modulo prime or prime power (for instance Babbage, Cauchy, Cayley, Gauss, Hensel, Hermite, Kummer, Legendre, Lucas, and Sticelberger). They discovered a variety of elegant and surprising theorems which are often easy to prove. For more information on these classical results, their extensions, and new results about this subject, see Dicson [3], and Granville [6]. Furthermore, the arithmetic and divisibility properties of binomial coefficients can be used to establish criteria for primality. In 80 Gauss [4, Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, 80, art. 329] wrote: The problem of distinguishing prime numbers from composite numbers... is nown to be one of the most important and useful in arithmetic.... The dignity of the science itself seems to require that every possible means be explored for solution of a problem so elegant and so celebrated. As far bac as 89 (see [6]), creator of of machines that were precursors of the modern computer Charles Babbage gave an easily proved characterization of the primes as follows: an integer n 2 is a prime if and only if ( ) n+m n (modn) for all positive integers m with 0 m n. This criterion was recently generalized by the author of this note in [0, Theorem.]. In 954 the amateur mathematician Pedro A. Piza [2] proved that an odd positive integer2n Mathematics Subject Classification. A5, A07, 05A0, B65. Keywords and phrases: primality criterion, congruence modulo a prime (prime power), Lucas congruence, Lucas theorem.
A PRIMALITY CRITERION... 2 is a prime if and only if ( 2n ) 0(mod) for all {,2,...,n}. In 972 H.B. Mann and D. Shans [8] discovered another attractive primality criterion which may be stated as follows: a positive integer 2 is prime if and only if ( n 2n) 0(mod) for each n such that /3 n /2. The following dual criterion to that of Mann and Shans was discovered in 985 by H.W. Gould and W.E. Greig [5] in the following form: a positive integer 2 is a prime if and only if ( n 2n) 0(mod) for each n such that n /2. Notice that by the famous Lucas theorem [7] given by the congruence (4), we immediately have ( ( np mp) n m) (modp), where p is a prime, n and m are integers with 0 m n. In 2009 the author of this note [9, Theorem] proved a partial ( converse theorem of this assertion as follows: If d,q > are integers such that nd ( md) n m) (modq) for every pair of integers n m 0, then d and q are powers of the same primep. Let p be a prime. In 878 É. Lucas [7] proved that () ( ) p ( ) (mod p) for any nonnegative integer {0,,...,p }. By Problem 494 of Mathematics Magazine proposed by E. Deutsch and I.M. Gessel in 997 [2] (see also [, pp ]), a converse assertion is also true; that is, an integer p 2 is a prime if and only if the congruence () holds for each {0,,...,p }. T.-X. Cai and A. Granville [, p. 277] proved that in this assertion the range for may be shortened to 0 n. Accordingly, the simultaneous congruences () with {0,,...,p } could be used to identify primes. Our Theorem generalizes the previously mentioned criterion for primality. This is motivated by the following result. Proposition. Let p be a prime and let f be a positive integer. Then for each {0,,...,p f } we have ( ) p f (2) ( ) (mod p). We are now ready to state the main result. Theorem. Let n > andq > be integers such that ( ) n (3) ( ) (mod q) for every integer {0,,...,n }. Thenq is a prime andnis a power of this primeq.
A PRIMALITY CRITERION PROOFS OF PROPOSITION AND THEOREM Proof of Proposition. Ifa = a 0 +a p+ +a l p l andb = b 0 +b p+ +b l p l are the p-adic expansions of nonnegative integers a and b (so that 0 a i,b i p for alli = 0,,...,l), then by Lucas s theorem ([7]; also see [6] or []), ( ) a l ( ) ai (4) (mod p). b i=0 b i If we tae = f i=0 ip i with0 i p for alli = 0,,...,f, then in view of the factp f = f i=0 (p )pi, the congruences (4) and () immediately yield ( ) ( p f f ) i=0 = (p )pi f ( ) p f i=0 (mod p) ip i i=0 i (5) f ( ) i = ( ) f i=0 i ( ) (mod p). i=0 Notice that in the last congruence of (5) we have used the fact that ifpis an odd prime, then and the sum f i=0 i have the same parity, while for p = 2 holds (mod2). Proof of Theorem is based on Proposition and the following lemma. Lemma. Let p be a prime and letf be a positive integer greater than. Then ( ) { p f p (mod p (6) 2 ) if p 3 p f 3 (mod 4) if p = 2. Proof. By using the identities ( ) ( a b = a b a ) ( a b and a ) ( b = a a b b ) with b a, we have (p ) ( ) ( ) f = pf p f p f = pf p f p f p f p f p f p f p f p f p f (7) ( ) p f = (p ). p f Further, we have ( ) p f p f p f i = p f p f i = p f i p f i (8) p f i p f i. i= i p f i 0( mod p) i p f i0( mod p) Iff 3, then (9) p f i p f i ( mod p2 ) for each i such that i p f and i 0( mod p).
Furthermore, for f 3 we have (0) i p f i0( mod p) p f i pf 2 p f i = A PRIMALITY CRITERION... 4 j= p f jp pf 2 p f jp = j= p f j p f 2 j = ( ) p f. p f 2 Substituting (9) and (0) into (8) we find that for each prime p and every integer f 3 holds ( ) ( ) p f p f () (mod p 2 ). p f p f 2 Iterating the congruence ()f 2 times yields ( ) ( ) p f p 2 (2) p f p which substituting into (7) for everyf 3 gives ( ) ( ) p f p 2 (3) (p ) p p f Further, for each primep 3we have (4) ( ) p 2 = p p i= p i= = +p p 2 p i p i i= i(p+i) i 2 = (p )/2 i= i p i (mod p 2 ) (mod p 2 ), p ( p ) p i + +p i= ( i + p i (mod p 2 ). i= ) (p )/2 = +p 2 i= i (mod p 2 ) i(p i) (mod p2 ). Substituting (4) into (3) we obtain that for each f 3 and any primep 3 ( ) p f (5) p (mod p 2 ). p f Notice also that for a primep 3 the identity (7) withf = 2 and the congruence (4) yield ( ) ( ) p 2 p 2 (6) = (p ) p (mod p 2 ). p p The congruences (5) and (6) imply the first part of the congruence (6).
A PRIMALITY CRITERION... 5 It remains to consider the case when p = 2. By (2), for each f 3 we have ( ) 2 f (7) 3 (mod 4), 2 f which is also satisfied for f = 2. The congruence (7) is in fact the second part of the congruence (6), and the proof is completed. Proof of Theorem. Taing = into the congruence (3) we obtain (8) n 0(modq). Therefore, ifpis a prime divisor ofq, then n can be expressed as n = sp f, where f and s are positive integers such that s is not divisible by p. Now we consider the following three cases. Case : s = f =. Then n = p, and this together with the congruence (8) yieldsq = p. Case 2: s = and f 2. Then n = p f, and hence, by the congruence (8) it follows thatq = p e with e f. By the congruence (6) of Lemma we have ( ) ( ) { n p f p (mod p (9) = 2 ) if p 3 3 (mod 4) if p = 2. p f p f On the other hand, if we suppose that e 2, then the congruence (3) with = p f reduced modulop 2 yields ( ) ( ) { n p f (mod p (20) = 2 ) if p 3 (mod 4) if p = 2. p f p f Comparing the congruences (9) and (20), we get p 0(modp 2 ). This contradiction shows that must bee =, or equivalently,q = p. Case 3: s 2. Then taes = t i=0 s ip i with0 s i p for alli =,...,t and s 0 p. Applying Lucas theorem (the congruence (4)), we have (2) ( ) ( ) ( n sp f t i= = = s ip i+f +(s 0 )p f + f ) i=0 (p )pi p f p f p ( ) f s0 = s 0 s (mod p). The congruence (2) and the condition (3) with = p f imply that s ( ) pf (modp). This shows that must be s 0(modp). A contradiction, and thus this case is impossible. Finally, the all three considered cases clearly completes the proof of the theorem.
