7 Topic Example 1 Solve a System of Linear-Quadratic Equations Algebraically Solve the following system of equations. 5x - y = 10 x + x - y = 0 Method 1: Substitution 1. Solve the linear equation for y. 5x - y = 10 y = 5x Substitute 5x - 10 for y in the quadratic equation and simplify. x + x - (5x - 10) = 0 x - 9x + 0 = 0 3. Solve quadratic by factoring or Quad. Prgm. (x - 4)(x - 5) = 0 x = 4 or x = 5 Method : Elimination 1. Align the terms with the same degree. 5x - y = 10 1 x + x - y = 0. Multiply 1 by - so you get opposite term to -y in 1. -(5x - y) = -(10) -10x +y = Add 3 and to eliminate y-terms. 0-10x + y = -0 + x - y = 0-9x = -0 x x x - 9x + 0 = 0

9 Example Model a Situation With a System of Equations Determine two integers such that the sum of the smaller number and twice the larger number is 46. Also, when the square of the smaller is decreased by three times the larger, the result is 93. a) Write a system of equations. Solution: a) Let S represent the smaller number. Let L represent the larger number. First statement: "the smaller number and twice the larger number is " 46 S + L = 46 Second statement:" the square of the smaller is decreased by three times the larger, the result is 93" S - 3L = 93

10 b) Solve algebraically. S + L = 46 1 S - 3L = 93 Hint: use Elimination Method Multiply 1 by 3 and by 3(S + L) = 3 (46) (S - 3L) = (93) 3 3S + 6L = 138 S - 6L = Add 3 and 4 to eliminate L S + 6L = 138 S - 0 S - 6L = 186 S + 3S = 34 S + 3S - 34 = 0 [use quad. prgm on Calc.] S = or 1 numbers are supposed to be integers. S = 1 Substitute S = 1 into linear equation to find L. S + L = L = 46 L = 34 L = 17 Solution ( 1, 17 )

12 Example 3 Solve a System of Quadratic-Quadratic Equations Algebraically Solve the following systems of equations. 3x - x - y - = 0 6x + 4x - y = 4 Must eliminate y, so multiply 1 by -1 then add 1 and. -3x + x + y = - 6x + 4x - y = 4 3x + 5x = Solve the quadratic equation by factoring or Quad. Prgm. x = - or x = 1 Now substitute these values into 3x - x - y = 3(-) - (-) - y = 3( ) - ( ) - y = 1 + -y = - - y = y = 1 y = -
