Twofol PT -symmetry in the lattice prouces aitional surface exceptional points that play the role of new critical points, along with the bulk exceptional point. We show that there are two istinct regimes possessing symmetry-protecte localize states, of which localization lengths are robust against external gain an loss. The states are emonstrate by numerical calculation of a quasi-1d laer lattice an a D bilayere square lattice. PACS numbers: Parity time (PT ) symmetric systems exhibit a phase transition through spontaneous symmetry breaking, from an unbroken PT-symmetric phase that keeps the eigenenergy real in non-hermitian systems, to a broken phase that contains complex conjugate energies [1]. As the general characteristic of non-hermitian systems, non- Hermiticity evelops from imaginary phase accumulation an imaginary potential ue to an imbalance of particle/energy flow where H H [ 5]. PT -symmetry is protecte in non-hermitian systems with a balance of energy gain an loss represente by the commutation relation [H,PT ] = 0, where H is a Hamiltonian an PT is a combination of parity an time-reversal symmetry operators. A wie range of PT -symmetric systems have been explore over several fiels, incluing optics [4 10], electronic circuits [11], atomic physics [1], an magnetic metamaterials [13]. Phase transitions in these systems occur via exceptional points (EPs), which are egenerate points of eigenenergies in non-hermitian systems that generate a Möbius strip structure of eigenenergies in parametric space because of the square-root branching property of the singular point [14, 15]. Such a topological structure has been reporte in microwave experiments [16, 17], optical microcavities [18], an a chaotic exciton-polariton billiar [19]. In non-hermitian systems, states localize at the eges, interfaces, an efects have recently attracte consierable attention not only in funamental stuies such as topology an symmetry but also in applications to quantum technologies. Non-Hermitian flat bans generate localize zero moes analogous to Majorana zero moes in conense matter physics, of which real energies are zero but imaginary energies are non-zero [0, 1]. These non-hermitian zero moes (NHZMs) are protecte by non-hermitian particle hole (NHPH) symmetry, which is also calle charge-conjugate symmetry, Electronic aress: aietheia@ibs.re.kr Electronic aress: hcpark@ibs.re.kr where ǫ i = ǫ j with Re(ǫ i) = 0 if i = j [, 3]. It has been shown that NHPH symmetry generates topological efect moes at the interface between non-hermitian lattices base on topologcially trivial Hermitian lattices [4, 5]. Otherwise, topologically protecte NHZMs have been propose in non-hermitian lattices base on topologically non-trivial Hermitian lattices, such as the Su Schrieffer Heeger moel [6 31]. In aition to NHZMs, non-hermitian boun states (NHBSs) are protecte by PT -symmetry, where ǫ i = ǫ j with Im(ǫ i) = 0 if i = j [3, 33]. Anomalous localize ege states in non- Hermitian lattice moels have been attribute to a wining number aroun an EP in momentum space [34 36]; localize states also exist at the interface between two lattices with the same topological orer but with istinct quantum phases, such as unbroken an broken PTsymmetric phases [37, 38]. A PT -symmetric system can be realize by combining the even-parity of the real potential an the oparity of the imaginary potential with respect to the PT -symmetric axis. Pairing the systems to be timereversal partners inuces twofol PT -symmetry, which generates two ifferent symmetric axes an guarantees two EPs. Such multiple EPs by multifol PT -symmetry as well as single EPs by simple PT -symmetry have been stuie both theoretically an experimentally [39 41]. In this work, we introuce a lattice containing twofol PT -symmetry to stuy how interplay between non-hermiticity an bulk symmetry affects the wavefunctions of the lattice. We fin two pairs of interface states that ecay exponentially in the space istinguishe by the bulk states. Particularly, we focus on robust localize states (NHZMs an NHBSs) of which localization length is unaffecte by variation of external gain/loss in two istinct regimes between the bulk EP an surface EPs. Let us prepare the PT -symmetric laer lattice with a basis of two sites (see Fig. 1 (a)). Non-Hermiticity is aopte by respective gain an loss at the two sites in the unit cell, a balance amount of which preserves PT -symmetry. A series of such unit cells forms a laer

The lattice Hamiltonian for this system reas Ĥ0 = l= ĥl, where ĥ l = c l hc l +c l T c l+1 +c l+1 Tc l (1) an c l ( l,a, l,b ). The matrix h iγσ z σ x escribes the non-hermicity with γ an the intra-cell hopping with, while T tσ 0 escribes the inter-cell hopping where σ x,z are the Pauli matrices an σ 0 is the ientity matrix. The matrix representation of the Hamiltonian for a single laer lattice in momentum space is written as H 0 (q) = h tcosqσ 0 through the Bloch wavefunction ψ(q) n einq c n, where q is the momentum vector. The (non-normalize) eigenstates are ψ η (q) = ( iγ/ η (γ/),) T, which are inepenent of q, where η = ± assigns the upper/lower bans. The corresponing eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are E η (q) = tcosq + η (γ/), which are complex energy bans as E(k) = E r (k) + ie i (k) accoring to ifferent γ in Fig. 1 (b). One may notice that there exists a phase transition between unbroken an broken PT -symmetric phases through the EP. At this EP, two complex energy bans merge into a single energy ban, as shown in mile panel of Fig. 1 (b); otherwise, the real an imaginary bans are separate. The real an imaginary parts of the complex spectrum for a finite-size PT -symmetric laer lattice with 400 unit cells are numerically calculate as a function of γ in Fig. (a) an (b), respectively. Results show a collective PT -symmetric phase transition at the bulk EP γ b =. For γ < γ b, the energy spectrum pair is real in spite of non-hermiticity, with each part attracting each other up to the bulk EP unlike the Hermitian cases, as shown in Fig. (a). For γ > γ b, meanwhile, the energy spectrum pairs are complex conjugates, an repel each other on the imaginary energy plane with increasing γ from the bulk EP, as shown in Fig. (b). We note that the two bans are separable at any value of γ except the bulk EP, because there is no ban crossing for any q [4]. The twofol PT -symmetric laer lattice can be forme by merging the eges of the prepare lattice an its time-reversal partner to create an interface in a process calle intertwinement (see Fig. 1 (c)). The Hamiltonian operator of this intertwine lattice consists of Ĥ = ĤL +ĤR +Ĥc, () whereĥl = 1 l= ĥl is ahamiltonianforthe left semiinfinite non-hermitian lattice, an ĤR = T l=0ĥlt 1 is a Hamiltonian for the right semi-infinite lattice with complex conjugate operator T as a time-reversal operator. AcouplingHamiltonianĤc = c 0 Tc 1+h.c.connects the two time-reversal partners. Intertwinement introuces aitional PT -symmetry with respect to the z-axis an aitional EPs accoring to the symmetry. The energy spectrum of the finite-size twofol PT -symmetric laer lattice is treate by using a triiagonal Hamiltonian. As shown in Fig. (c) an (), the four emergent states (re/blue lines) not only show the PT -symmetric phase transition but also separation from the bulk states, while the bulk states are coincient with the states of the simple PT-symmetric lattice. The emergent states are exponentially localize at the interface, of which localization lengths efine by the ex-
3 of interface states, incluing NHBSs, by comparing the phase iagrams in which the white areas inicate forbien regimes of localize states. We note that, while invisibleinthe energyspectrain Fig. (c)an(), phase transitions appear for the localize states at the bulk EP, as shown in Fig. 3 (a). The interface states can be obtaine through the Schröinger equation H Φ = E Φ. Let us consier a linear combination of the simple laer lattice eigenstates to solve the intertwine lattice [see Supplemental Materials]. The ansatz of the wavefunction in the system is Φ = Φ L + Φ R = η=± {α η ψ(q η ) L +β η ψ( q η ) R }. The matching conition of the counter-propagating wavefunctions at the interface is ( γ ) cos(q+ ( γ ), sinq + sinq + +q ) = (3) 3 FIG. 3: (color online). (a) Localization lengths of o (blue line) an even (re line) interface states using the same parameters as Fig.. The NHZMs an NHBSs are robust against γ in the blue an re shae regimes II an III, respectively. The orange an green lines represent the analytic solutions of localization lengths of the o an even interface states, respectively. (b, c) Phase iagrams for the localization lengths of o an even states, respectively. Blue soli, black soli, an blue ashe lines in (b) inicate γ, γ b, an γ b, respectively. Black soli, re soli, an re ashe lines in (c) inicate γ b, γ +, an γ +b, respectively. No localize states exist in the white areas. The black otte lines inicate the localization lengths shown in (a). ponential ecay of the wavefunctions ψ e x/λ as a function of γ are shown in Fig. 3 (a). Two regimes having constant localization lengths are inicate by the shae regions in Fig.3 (a). In the blue-shae regime γ < γ < γ b, the localize interface states conserve NHPH symmetry as NHZMs, an in the re-shae regime γ b < γ < γ +, the localize interface states conserve PT -symmetry as NHBSs. Otherwise, the localize states are regare as efect states in a ban gap. The localization lengths of the NHZMs an NHBSs are inepenent of the non-hermiticity control parameter γ, which is relate to the interplay between the two ifferent PT -symmetric phases of interface an bulk states on the lattice protecting twofol PT -symmetry. The NHZMs appear when the bulk an interface states have unbroken an broken phases, respectively, while conversely the NHBSs appear when the bulk an interface states have broken an unbroken phases, respectively. Otherwise, the interface an bulk states have the same unbroken or broken phases. The phase iagrams in Fig. 3 (b) an (c) show the localization lengths of the interface states of NHZMs an NHBSs as a function of intra-cell hopping an non-hermiticity parameter γ, respectively. When < t, we can recognize that there exist only a pair where cosq η = E+η (γ/) is the momentum vector corresponing to each energy ban, with all energy scales being imensionless by t from here. This conition provies exact solutions for the interface states as ( E η ± = η 1± )( ( ) γ ±, (4) ) which are eigenenergies of the two paire states separate from the bulk bans, where the inex ± inicates the even/o interface states as the re/blue curves in Fig. (c) an (), respectively. It is easy to see that the two surface EPs are γ ± = ± an that the interface states unergo phase transitions from unbroken to broken PT -symmetric phases. There is no interface state in the Hermitian limit, i.e., γ = 0, an the interface states with real eigenenergies separate from the bulk states as γ increases. The even an o interface states finally merge into the bulk states at γ +b = + an γ b =, respectively. To analyze the characteristics of the emergent interface states, we introuce complex momentum vectors of the states as q ± η = k ± η + iκ± η, where k± η an κ ± η are real an ± inicates the even/o state. The ispersion relation is generalize by complex momentum cos(k +iκ) = coskcoshκ isinksinhκ. By substituting the energies of the interface states as foun in Eq. (4) for the energy in the ispersion relation, cosq η ± = E± η +η (γ/), (5) we can formulate localization lengths as λ ± = 1/κ ± η at the interfaces of the intertwine lattice with respect to the istinct regimes of control parameter γ [see Supplemental Materials]. For the NHZMs, we can evaluate the inverse localization length an wave number for oscillation as follows, coshκ η =, (γ/) cosk η = η. (6)

The upper inset plots the eigenenergies on the complex plane for γ = 7.6, an the lower inset illustrates the D lattice with a 1D straight interface along the y-axis. (b) Intensity istribution of a selecte lossless NHBS for γ = 7.6. (c) Top view of the D lattice schematic with an arbitrarily shape close interface, with a cut-view showing the interface. The upper an lower layers have opposite profiles of gain an loss. () Intensity istribution of a selecte lossless NHBS for γ = 6.5. The parameters in this figure are = 3 an t x = t y = 1, an the number of unit cells is In case of the NHBSs, the inverse localization length an wave number of the localize states are coshκ + η = +1, + (γ/) cosk+ η = η. (7) The localization lengths 1/κ ± η from Eq. (6) an Eq. (7) agree well with numerical results, as shown in Fig. 3 (a). It is meaningful to unerstan the surface EPs through the eigenenergies of the twofol PT -symmetric four sites containing self-energy, which have the same symmetries as our moel. The effective Hamiltonian reas H eff = τ 0 ( σ x +i γ σ z)+τ x ( σ x ), (8) where τ i is the Pauli matrix with ientity matrix τ 0 for inter-cell hopping. The Hamiltonian is block iagonalize by means of unitary matrix L = (τ x +τ z ) σ 0 /. One of the blocks is H + = iγ /σ z ( + 1)σ x with eigenvalues E η + = η (+1) (γ /), an the other block is H = iγ /σ z ( 1)σ x with eigenvalues Eη = η ( 1) (γ /). We can see two ifferent critical values of γ ± with respect to the separate blocks. Suppose that the on-site energy is renormalize by γ = γ +4 in terms of the self-energy of the semiinfinite leas; then the block iagonal matrix has two EPs, γ ± = ±, which are the same as the surface EPs in the intertwine lattice. It shoul be note that three symmetry-protecte EPs exist in the twofol PTsymmetric laer lattice: two surface EPs arising from the twofol PT -symmetry, an a bulk EP from the PTsymmetric lattice itself. We now propose a two-imensional (D) lattice in which a issipationless one-imensional (1D) waveguie is realizable by repeating 1D twofol PT -symmetric laer lattices. For example, a straight waveguie is consiere on the Dlattice as the interface along the y-axis, as shownin the lowerinset offig. 4 (a). This Dlattice satisfies both translational symmetry along the y-axis an twofol PT -symmetry of each 1D laer lattice. Figure 4 (a) plots the imaginary parts of the eigenenergies as a function of γ in the D bilayere square lattice with unit cells, where it is apparent that the imaginary eigenenergies are broaene when compare to those of the 1D lattice in Fig. () because of finite-size effects. As shown in the upper inset of Fig. 4 (a), the istribution of the complex eigenenergies is similar to that of the 1D lattice, except for the real energy istribution ue to the ispersion towar the y-axis. The zero-imensional localize NHBSs, which are robust across a wie range of non-hermiticity in the 1D lattice, exten into the 1D NHBSs in the D lattice. The corresponing eigenstates, which exten along the y irection with no issipation along the x-axis, are epicte in Fig. 4 (b), with wavelengths relate to the real parts of the eigenenergies. Finally, we show the robustness of the issipationless 1D NHBSs against geometrical eformations. We esign a D PT -symmetric layer compose of square lattices that contain a locally inverte area with an arbitrary shape, as shown in Fig. 4 (c). Notably, the geometry presents many abrupt corners where the interface bens but still conserves symmetry. We can see that the NHBSs survive without issipation at the interfaces with sharp corners, as shown in Fig. 4 (), while there exists bening loss aroun the sharply eforme region of a trivial waveguie. Therefore, NHBSs can be implemente, without bening loss, as the effective waveguie in a D lattice while conserving local twofol PT -symmetry. In conclusion, we propose a system in which localize states emerge solely through the non-triviality resulting from non-hermiticity. Our twofol PT -symmetric laer lattice contains symmetry-protecte interface states as NHZMs an NHBSs with corresponing phase transitions at the two surface EPs an bulk EP as a function of γ. The characteristics of these two states are as follows. The NHZMs protecte by NHPH symmetry are localize at the interface between the o surface EP an the bulk EP, while the NHBSs protecte by PT -symmetry are localize at the interface between the even surface EP an the bulk EP. Both have constant localization lengths unaffecte by changes in the non-hermiticity parameter. As an example, we showehere that the NHBSs can form an effective waveguie without issipation at the interface between non-hermitian time-reversal partners. We expect the characteristics of these two symmetry-protecte
