2 » O U R C O M P A N Y: S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y A N D V A L U E - B O U N D Maul is an international brand company with production sites on 2 locations in Germany. More than 1000 innovative niche products are manufactured out of steel and plastic material. The skills of our employees, combined with the in-house innovation and production is what makes us so strong: we can respond quickly and flexibly to market developments and the needs of our customers. What is important here is not being quick in finding short-term solutions but rather in producing good, durable, creative products. In line with our company philosophy and that for over 100 successful years.» O U R R A N G E : A T T R A C T I V E A N D I N N O V A T I V E We offer over 1000 products from our own development and production. The fact that we produce ourselves, allows us to respond quickly - and to serve the market with the right products. A closed process chain, from tooling to sales, ensures high efficiency: In only 6 to 8 months we can create a product out of an idea. This works so well that around 20% of our turnover is achieved with our new products. Our innovative strength is also certified by the 50 patents and utility models which have been registered over the last 25 years.» E X C E L L E N T D E S I G N A N D T E S T E D Q U A L I T Y The LED desk luminaire MAULoptimus colour vario has been designated winner of the German Design Award, the international premium award of the German Design Counsil (Rat für Formgebung). By choosing the best available materials and designing the products ourselves, we can guarantee first-class quality. In our view, German quality also implies the promotion of innovative developments. For example, we use the latest LED technology for our luminaires. An institutionalized testing process guarantees the consistent quality of all MAUL products.
3 » C O R R E C T L I G H T I N G E F F E C T S T H E W O R K I N G E N V I R O N M E N T. The modern working environment should be safe and ergonomic and beneficial for one s health. It activates and motivates, it is good for concentration, productivity and safety. Bad light leads to complaints such as tension, headaches and tired eyes, as the body tries to balance out the unfavourable light.» W H A T I S P R O P E R L I G H T? The basis for proper lighting is a balanced and regulable relationship between daylight, general basic lighting and individualadjustable lighting conditions in the working environment, e.g. with desk luminaires. It is adapted for the respective seeing tasks, guarantees performance and comfort of the eyes and can be individually adapted for one s needs (working environment regulations for monitor use). Considering the visual tasks to be done, the illuminance, the required colour temperature/ reproduction and the energy efficiency are important criteria when choosing the most suitable luminaire. 300 Lux 750 Lux 500 Lux Standleuchte The Visual Tasks determine the Illuminance Illuminance Lux (lx) has a large influence how quick, how safe and how easy a visual task can be accomplished by the eyes. The more difficult the task, the higher the illuminance needed. Using artificial light, 500 lux are usually enough for writing and reading tasks, for more strenuous tasks or with increasing age more lux are needed. 500 Lux Standleuchte Important Illuminance values according to DIN EN and ASR A3.4 for the office (excerpt) Filing, copying, traffic area Writing, typing, reading, data processing Technical drawing CAD - working environment Conference and meeting rooms 300 lx 500 lx 750 lx 500 lx 500 lx Two-Component Lighting System The principle of this form of lighting is the combination of an indirect general lighting component (uplighter, wall or suspended lamp) with a direct component on the desk (desk luminaire). For all people looking for a flexible energy management and a photometric technically mature solution, the lighting of offices with uplighters is a very good solution. Combined with MAUL desk luminaires the optimal lighting can be achieved for the majority of tasks. Advantages: On each desk one can adjust the illuminance individually depending of the task to be done Energy-saving due to the more subdued lighting possible in unused or less-used areas The switching-on of the individual desk lighting only when needed leads to more energy-saving High flexibility when one has to move office No reflections or glares on the monitor
4 Glossary ASR A3.4 (BGR 131) This is a directive concerning workplaces. It determines the specifications on the fittings and the company for the lighting of the workplace. The rule defines the minimum lighting level and the glare protection levels to ensure no damage to the health and safety of the employees. This rule is closely associated to the rules of the Employers Mutual Insurance Association (BGR 131). In addition MAUL offers helpful diagrams which should act as an aid in planning the working environment. Warm white light Kelvin Neutral white light Kelvin Daylight white light Kelvin Biologically effective light also called melanopic lighting effects or Human Centric Lighting, is designed to foster a harmonious atmosphere, worker productivity and health. It is modelled after natural daylight. Light with a high proportion of blue (daylight white light over 5300 K) influence melatonin levels, while concentration and productivity is increased. In contrast, light without this proportion of blue (warm white light Kelvin) has a calming and relaxing effect. Feelings of wellbeing are increased and falling asleep becomes easier. It is essential that the light is flat, meets the eye from above and across, and can be adjusted throughout the day dynamically in terms of the colour temperature, depending on the time of day (recommended lighting level at an office workstation is between 500 Lux and 1500 Lux). Find out more at Colour Temperature (Kelvin) is a measurement in degrees Kelvin (abbreviation K ) that indicates the hue of a specific type of light source. The values range from K (warmwhite), K (neutral-white) to K (daylight-white). Colour Rendering Index (CRI/Ra) is a measurement describing the quality of the colour reflection from a specific light source. A value of 100 corresponds to the colour reflection of daylight. The abbreviation is Ra. Typical values: Energysaving lamp 85, Halogen light bulb 100, High-pressure sodium lamp (yellow street lamp) 30. DIN EN (DIN ) is a European Norm which defines the lighting needed for indoor workplaces to ensure the optimal visual comfort and performance. The DIN EN replaces the DIN DIN is a German industrial norm which defines the regulations for working places which exceed the regulations covered by DIN EN It determines the necessary documentation to be provided by the producer to ensure a competent lighting planning of the workplace. Energy Efficiency is a measurement for the efficiency of a light bulb. It represents the relationship between the produced light current to the power consumption. The higher the light current, the more light one achieves for the invested power. Energy Efficiency class On the energy efficiency label the efficiency is depicted with the letters from A ++ for high efficiency to E for weaker efficiency. The energy efficiency is measured in Lumen/Watt and is abbreviated with lm/w.
5 Glare Basically there are two forms of glare: Disability glare impairs vision without necessarily causing discomfort. It is the duty of every producer or importer to ensure that when using high performance diodes that this does not happen under normal conditions. Discomfort glare is a sensation of annoyance or pain caused by high luminance in the field of view. It does not cause any permanent damage but is caused when bright light shines in the angle of view; it can disturb the performance levels and can lead to a false positioning which can affect the health. The safety is also at risk, e.g. blending in a stairway. Illuminance Diagram cm 35 cm 62 cm When looking at the picture you can see how much light falls on the desk depending on the distance between the luminiare and the desk. The vertical axis shows the illuminance (Lux) from the distances 25 (black), 35 (red) and 62 cm (yellow) between luminaire head and desk. The highest illuminance per distance is achieved at the value 0 of the horizontal axis (directly below the luminaire head) and reduces the lateral offset. Illumination Level (Lux) is a measure for the light quantity which falls on the lighted surface. The illumination level differs depending on the distance of the light source to the surface. The illumination level is measured in Lux ; abbreviation lx. Lamp Life is the length of time in which 70% of the lamp bulbs of the same construction still function, i.e. with LED lamps the length of time that 70% of the original lighting current is radiated. Lamp Socket There are many different sockets. In MAUL luminaires you can find the well-known Edison sockets E14 and E27 for energysaving lamps. The sockets G23, G5, G10q, 2G7 and 2G11 for fluorescent lamps without an integrated power supply and G4 or GY6.35 sockets for halogen light bulbs. Light Density Diagram L [cd/m²] 1,4 Mill In this diagram the light intensity is shown as seen from an angle of 60 (at the side below) from the light bulb. The 60 angle here is derived from the downward perpendicular of the light beam (0 ). In normal use of the luminaire one chooses an angle above 90 to avoid a direct glare from the light bulb. Light Distribution Curve cd/klm C0-C C90-C270 The light distribution curve shows how the light emitted from the luminaire head is distributed in the room. The lighting planner can read off the light strength achieved at each angle; in other words at what intensity the light beams shine in the different directions. The red curve (C0,0 C180,0) shows the lateral light distribution curve, the blue curve (C90,0 C270,0) shows the longitudinal curve to the light source. 0 is the downward vertical of the light direction. Light Intensity (Candela) is a measurement for the strength of a light beam. It shows the fraction of visible light that is emitted in a specific direction. The light intensity is measured in Candela ; abbreviated cd. Luminance relates the impression of brightness which the viewer has when looking at a light source or an object. The luminance is measured in Candela/square meter; abbreviated cd/m². Typical values: sun cd/m², high power LED cd/m², fluorescent lamp cd/m². Luminous Power (Lumen) is the sum of all light which is emitted in all directions from a light source. The luminous power is measured in Lumen, abbreviated lm
