ON CERTAIN NONLINEAR ELLIPTIC PDE AND QUASICONFOMAL MAPPS BETWEEN EUCLIDEAN SURFACES arxiv: v [math.cv] 7 Apr 008 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ Abstract. It is proved that every q.c. C diffeomorphism w between two domains with smooth boundary satisfying the inequality w M w + N is Lipschitz continuous. This extends the results of the authors [0]. In addition it is proved that, every quasiconformal harmonic mapping between two zerogenus C,α surfaces with C,α boundary, is Lipshitz as well. This theorem is applied to the case of minimal surfaces spanning C,α Jordan curves and is extended to the case of C,α surfaces with smooth and compact boundary.. Introduction.. Basic facts and notation. By U we denote the unit disk, by Ω a domain in R and by S a smooth dimensional surface in R l, l 3. Let f be a smooth mapping between a Jordan domain Ω and a surface S of the Euclid space R l. Consider the functional (.) E[f] = f x + f y dxdy Ω and minimise it under the boundary conditions f S (z) = γ(z) Γ = S. The stationary points of the energy integral E[f] satisfy the Euler-Lagrange equation i.e. Laplace equation (.) f = f xx + f yy = 4f zz 0. The mapping f satisfying the relation (.) is called harmonic. We also consider elliptic partial differential equation (PDE): (.3) Lf = a f xx + a f xy + a f y + b f x + b f y + g 0, for (x, y) Ω where a, a, a, b, b, which we call the coefficients of the operator L are functions in Ω, a > 0 and a a a > 0 on Ω. If a > a 0 > 0 and a a a > d 0 > 0 on Ω, then the equation (.3) is called strictly elliptic partial differential equation on Ω. Let us define harmonic mappings and quasiconformal mappings between two smooth dimensional surfaces S and S. For every a S let X a (x, y) be a conformal mapping between the unit disk and a neighborhood U a S i.e. let x, y be isothermal coordinates in U a. The mapping f of the surface S into the surface S is called harmonic if for every a S f X a ( g = (Y f(a) ) f X a ) is harmonic in U. Let k [0, ) and let f be a homeomorphism between S and S. Let a S be arbitrary and let X a be isothermal coordinates in U a. Similarly let Y f(a) be isothermal coordinates in some neighborhood V f(a) in Y. If for every a 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 3B05 ; Secondary 3B0.
DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ the mapping g = (Y f(a) ) f X a satisfies the inequality g z k g z in Xa (U a), then f is said to be a k quasiconformal (q.c.) mapping. We will mainly investigate some properties of quasiconformal mappings between smooth dimensional surfaces, satisfying certain differential equations (inequalities), in particular satisfying laplace equation. See [4] for the first result and see [0]-[] and [] for some recent results on the topic of q.c. harmonic functions for plane domains. See also the Background for the statements of results concerning this topic... Background. Below we present some previous results about the boundary correspondence and Lipschitz continuity under quasiconformal and harmonic mappings. () If w : Ω Ω is quasiconformal then w has a continuous extension to Ω, see []. () If w is conformal mapping and γ, γ C m then w has a C m extension on boundary (see for instance []). (3) If w is a harmonic diffeomorphism of the unit disk onto itself then the following conditions are equivalent: w is q.c.; w is bi-lipschitz; the boundary function is bi-lipschitz and the Hilbert transformation of its derivative is in L (see []). (4) An orientation-preserving homeomorphism ψ of the real axis can be extended to a q.c. harmonic homeomorphism of the upper half-plane if and only if ψ is bi-lipschitz and the Hilbert transformation of the derivative ψ is bounded (see []). (5) Let f be a quasiconformal C diffeomorphism from the C,α Jordan domain Ω onto the C,α Jordan domain Ω. If there exists a constant M such that f M f z f z, z Ω, then f has bounded partial derivatives. In particular, it is a Lipschitz mapping. See [0]. (6) Suppose that h is an euclidean harmonic mapping from U onto bounded domain D = h(u). Suppose that z 0 T, h has continuous extension to some open arc z 0 I T that it maps univalently onto convex smooth arc γ D. If h is qc in some nbgh z 0, then h b is bi-lipscitz in in some nbgh z 0, see [], p. 6. (7) Let Ω and Ω be Jordan domains, let µ (0, ], and let f : Ω Ω be a harmonic homeomorphism. Then: (a) If f is q.c and Ω, Ω C,µ, then f is Lipschitz; (b) If f is q.c and if Ω, Ω C,µ and Ω is convex, then f is bi- Lipschitz; (c) If Ω is the unit disk, Ω is convex, and Ω, Ω C,µ, then f is quasiconformal if and only if its boundary function f b is bi-lipschitz and the Hilbert transform of its derivative is in L. (d) If f is q.c and if Ω is convex then the boundary functions f b is bi- Lipschitz in the Euclidean metric and Cauchy transform C[f b ] of its derivative is in L. (e) If f is q.c and if Ω is convex then the inverse of boundary functions g b is Lipschitz in the Euclidean metric and Cauchy transform C[g b ] of its derivative is in L. Concerning the items (a), (b) and (c) we refer to [3], and for the items (d) and (e) see [8].
QUASICONFORMAL HARMONIC MAPS BETWEEN SURFACES 3 (a) Let f be a quasiconformal C diffeomorphism from the C,α Jordan domain Ω onto the C,α Jordan domain D. If there exists a constant M such that (.4) f M f z f z, z Ω, then f has bounded partial derivatives. In particular, it is a Lipschitz mapping. In connection with statements 8 a), b), c), d) and e) see Theorem 0. and Theorem.9 in K. Astala, T. Iwaniec, G. Martin, J. Onninen, Extremal Mappings of Finite Distortion []. They have observed that given qc data, the minimiser is seldom qc. Proposition.. Suppose that domains Ω and Ω in Theorem 0. [] are C, α. The unique minimiser f of the problem is qc if and only if h = f satisfies one of equivalent conditions 8 (c), (d) or (e)(or if the boundary mapping-data g b = f b satisfies one of equivalent conditions 8 (c), (d) or (e)). For the mapping f : Ω Ω we write f C l,α (Ω) (f C l,α (Ω)) (l N, 0 < α ), if f C l and for every compact subset E Ω there exists a constant C = C(E) (C = C(Ω )) such that u l,α := β l Dβ u + β =l sup x,y Ω D β u(x) D β u(y) x y α C. The domain Ω is called C l,α domain if the boundary Ω is a compact C l,α -dimensional manifold (curve). A surface S R n with the boundary S will be called C l,α surface if there exists a C l,α diffeomorphism h from S S to a C l,α closed domain Ω 0 = Ω Ω. More precisely h and h are C l,α diffeomorphisms having C l,α extension to the boundary. If S is C l,α surface, then there exist C l,α functions h, h,..., h n defined on Ω such that S S = {h(z) = (h (z),...,h n (z)) : z Ω},and (.5) rank[h (z)] =, for all z = x + iy Ω. If Ω is the unit disk then such surface we call disk-like surface. Remark.. If S is a disk-like C l,α surface of R n, n, then by Whitney extension theorem S is a subset of a closed C l,α surface S without boundary in R n. Hence there exists a C l,α disk-like surface S such that S ints. For the sake of completeness let us prove the last fact directly: By [4,Theorem 3..4, p. 5)] every C l,α smooth function h defined in a closed set E of Euclid space R has an C l,α extension to R. It follows that the mapping h(z) = (h (z),..., h n (z)) has an C l,α extension h to the whole plane. Since h is injective and rank[h (z)] =, for z there exists r > such that rank[h (z)] =, for z r. Since h is injective in z and locally injective in z r, there exists r 0 (, r] such that h in injective in z r 0. Then we take S = h(d(0, r 0 )). The same hold for arbitrary C l,α surfaces. It is well known that an orientation preserving quasiconformal mapping f : Ω C of a planar domain is a solution to the Beltrami equation: (.6) f(z) = µ(z) f(z), where = z = ( x i y ), = z = ( x +i y ), and µ(z), a measurable function in Ω with µ <, is called the Beltrami coefficient or the complex dilatation of f.
4 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ A q.c. mapping f we will call regular at a point z 0 if there exist continuous partial derivatives of f in some neighborhood of z 0 and J f (z 0 ) = f z (z 0 ) f z (z 0 ) > Auxiliary results. Theorem.3. Let Ω be an open subset of C, 0 < α < and l N. Let µ C l,α (Ω), such that sup z Ω µ(z) <. Then there exists the diffeomorphic solution f of Beltrami equation: (.7) f(z) = µ(z) f(z), that belongs to the class C l+,α (Ω). Note that, after writing this paper, it was pointed out to us by T Iwaniec that the theorem there hold for l = 0 as well. For the sake of completeness, we give the proof of this weaker form of theorem, which is one of the main tools in proving the main result of this section (see below Theorem.7). We will prove the theorem using the following three propositions: Proposition.4 ([3], Corollary 9.8). Let Ω be a C, domain in R, and let the operator L be strictly elliptic in Ω with coefficients a ij C 0 (Ω), b i L, i, j =,. Then, if ϕ C 0 ( Ω), the Dirichlet problem Lu = 0 in Ω, u = ϕ on Ω, has a unique solution u W, loc (Ω) C0 (Ω). Proposition.5 ([3], Theorem 9.9). Let u be W, loc solution of PDE Lu = f in a domain Ω, where the coefficients of L belong to C l,α (Ω), l, 0 < α <. Then u C l+,α. Furthermore if Ω C l+,α, Lu = f is strictly elliptic in Ω with coefficients in C l,α (Ω), then u C l+,α (Ω). Proposition.6 ([,Theorem 7.]). Let µ, µ k <, be a measurable function in a domain Ω such that the integral µ(z) µ(z 0 ) (.8) I(r) = z z 0 dxdy z z 0 <r converges uniformly in every compact subset F of Ω i.e. for every ε > 0 there exists r > 0 such that I(r) < ε for every z 0 F. Then every quasiconformal mapping w : Ω Ω whose complex dilatation coincides with µ almost everywhere in Ω is a regular quasiconformal mapping of Ω and has complex dilatation µ for every z Ω. Proof of the Theorem.3. According to Riemann measure mapping theorem there exists a homeomorphic solution f of Beltrami equation. On the other hand since µ is holder mapping the integral (.8) converges at every compact subset of Ω. Thus f is q.c. diffeomorfism. Let D be an arbitrary closed disk in Ω and let ϕ = f D. Let µ = α + iβ. Then (.7) is equivalent to the system: Hence ( α)u x ( + α)v y = β(u y v x ) ( + α)u y + ( α)v x = β(u x + v y ). v x = µ + + α µ u y + β µ u x = ρ u y u x v y = µ + α µ u x + β µ u y = ρu x + u y.
QUASICONFORMAL HARMONIC MAPS BETWEEN SURFACES 5 Since v xy = v yx it follows (.9) Lu := ρu xx + u xy + ρ u yy + (ρ x + y)u x + (ρ y + x)u y = 0. Similarly we obtain the equations and hence u x = µ + α µ v y + β µ v x = ρv y v x, u y = µ + + α µ v x + β µ v y = ρ v x + v y, (.0) L v := ρ v xx + v xy + ρv yy + (ρ x + y)v x + (ρ y + x)v y = 0. Since ρ > 0, ρ > 0 and ρ ρ = > 0 it follows that the PDE s (.9) and (.0) are strictly elliptic. On the other hand since µ C l,α it follows that the coefficients of L and L are C l,α. Using Proposition.4 and Proposition.5 we obtain that the solutions u and v of the Dirichlet problems Lu = 0, u = Re ϕ on D and L v = 0, v = Im ϕ on D are C l+,α. Since the solution is unique it follows that the function f = u + iv = u + iv C l+,α (D). Consequently f C l+,α (Ω). Theorem.7. Let S be a disk-like C l,α (l ) surface in R n. Then there exists a conformal C l,α parameterisation X of S having a C l,α extension to the boundary. To prove the theorem we need the proposition: Proposition.8 (Kellogg and Warshawski see [5], [3] and [4]). If Ω is a Jordan domain having a C l,α boundary and ω conformal mapping of Ω onto D, then ω (l) C α (Ω). In particular it is bounded from above on U. Proof of the Theorem.7. According to the Remark., we can consider the surface S S and a C l,α diffeomorphism h(z) = (h, h,...,h n ) from the unit disk U onto S. We easily obtain that n (.) dσ = dh j = g dx + g dxdy + g dy, where (.) g = By Hölder s inequality, j= n h j x, g = j= with equality throughout if and only if n h j xh j y, g = j= g g g n h j y. j= (h x, h x,..., hn x ) = ρ(x, y)(h y, h y,...,hn y ) for some ρ. However, since the map (x, y) (h, h,...,h n ) is a diffeomorphism, the linear map between tangent planes: h (x, y) : T(U) T(S ) has rank. Therefore, according to (.5) the strict inequality (.3) g g g > 0 holds for all (x, y) U.
6 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ Using the complex notation z = x + iy, (.) can be written as dσ = 4 g (dz + d z) i g (dz d z ) 4 g (dz d z) where and = dz ( 4 g 4 g i g ) + d z ( 4 g 4 g + i g ) + dzd z( g + g ) = Adz + Bd z = A dz + B A d z, A = [ ] (g + g ) + g g g, B (.4) A = (g g ) + ig (g + g ) + =: µ. g g g Hence, using the inequality (.3) it follows that µ = (g + g ) g g g (g + g ) + < g g g for all z = x + iy U. On the other hand, using the complex notation w = u + iv, the metric in U can be written as du + dv = dw = w z dz + w z d z w z. Hence, if the map w(z) = u(z) + iv(z) satisfies the Beltrami equation w z = µw z with the coefficient µ = B A Cl,α (U), then the conformality condition du + dv = λ(x, y) dσ is satisfied with λ(x, y) = w z / A > 0. Since µ 0 = max z U µ(z) <, using Theorem.3, we obtain that the solution w of the Beltrami equation is in the class C l,α (U). It follows that the mapping h w : w(u) S is a C l,α conformal diffeomorphism. Let Ω = h (S). Then Ω is a compact subset of the unit disk U having a C l,α boundary. It follows that Ω = w(ω) is also a Jordan domain having a C l,α Jordan boundary. Now using Kellogg s theorem the Riemann conformal mapping ϕ : Ω U is a C l,α diffeomorphism on Ω. Finally, the conformal mapping X = h w ϕ satisfies the desired conditions. Corollary.9. Let X : U S be a conformal mapping between the unit disk and the disk-like C,α surface S. Then (.5) (.6) (.7) c := min {z: z } X u (z) = min {z: z } X v (z) > 0, C := max {z: z } X uu (z) + X uv (z) + X vv (z) <, and log X u (w) w M <. Proof. The first two inequalities follows directly from Theorem.7. For ρ = log X u (w) we have ρ w = < X uu, X u > i < X uv, X u > X u (w) = < X uu, X u > +i < X uu, X v > X u (w).
QUASICONFORMAL HARMONIC MAPS BETWEEN SURFACES 7 Consequently: (.8) ρ w X uu X u M = C c.. The main results Theorem. (The main theorem). Let f be a quasiconformal C diffeomorphism from the plane domain Ω onto the plane domain G. Let γ Ω Ω and γ G = f(γ Ω ) G be C,α respectively C,α Jordan arcs. If for some τ γ Ω there exist positive constants r, M and N such that (.) f M f + N, z Ω D(τ, r), then f has bounded partial derivatives in Ω D(τ, r τ ) for some r τ < r. In particular it is a Lipschitz mapping in Ω D(τ, r τ ). Proposition. (Interior estimate). (Heinz-Bernstein, see [8]). Let s : U R be a continuous function from the closed unit disc U into the real line satisfying the conditions: () s is C on U, () s b (θ) = s(e iθ ) is C and (3) s M 0 s + N 0, on U for some constants M 0 and N 0 (the last inequality we will call the interior estimate inequality). Then the function s is bounded on U. Proof of Theorem.. Let r > 0 be sufficiently small positive real number such that = D(τ, r) Ω is a Jordan domain with C,α boundary consisting of a circle arc C(t 0, t ) and an arc γ 0 [t 0, t ] γ containing τ. Take D = f( ). Let g be a conformal mapping of the unit disc onto. Let f = f g. Since f = g f and f = g f, we find that f satisfies the inequality (.) with M = M and N = N inf z g (z). We will prove the theorem for f and then apply Kellogg s theorem. For simplicity, we write f instead of f. Let J be a compact subset of γ 0 containing τ but not containing the points t 0 and t. Let t J be arbitrary. Step (Local Construction). In this step we show that there are two Jordan domains D and D in D with C,α boundary such that (i) D D D, (ii) D D is a connected arc containing the point w = f(t) in its interior, (iii) D \ D D. Let H be the Jordan domain bounded by the Jordan curve γ which is composed by the following sequence of Jordan arcs: {y /5 + ( x) /5 =, x }; {( y) /5 + ( x) /5 =, x }; [(, ), (, )]; {( y) /5 + ( + x) /5 =, x }; {y /5 +(+x) /5 =, x } and [(, 0), (, 0)]. Let H be the Jordan domain bounded by the Jordan curve γ which is composed by the following sequence of Jordan arcs: {y /5 +( x) /5 =, x }; [(, ), (, )]; {(3 y) /5 + ( x) /5 =, x }; [(, 3), (, 3)]; {(3 y) /5 + ( + x) /5 =, x }; [(, ), (, )]; {y /5 + ( + x) /5 =, x } and [(, 0), (, 0)]. Note that H H [, ] [0, 3], H R = H R = [, ] and that H, H C 3.
8 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ Let Γ be an orientation preserving arc-length parameterization of γ = D such that for s 0 (0, length(γ)) there holds: Γ(s 0 ) = f(t). Let D = Γ (s 0 )D, b = Γ (s 0 )f(t) and Γ = Γ (s 0 )Γ. Then there exists r > 0 such that (b, b + ir] D. Since γ = D C,α, it follows that, there exist x 0 > 0, ε > 0, y 0 (0, r/3), the C,α function h : [ x 0, x 0 ] R, h(0) = 0, and the domain D D such that: () Γ ([s 0 ε, s 0 + ε]) = {b + (x, h(x)) : x [ x 0, x 0 ]}, () D = {b + (x, h(x) + y) : x [ x 0, x 0 ], y (0, 3y 0 ]}. Let Υ : [, ] [0, 3] D be the mapping defined by: Υ(x, y) = b + (xx 0, h(xx 0 ) + yy 0 ). Then Υ is a C,α diffeomophism. Take D i = Γ (s 0 ) Υ(H i ), i =,. Obviously D D D and D and D have C,α boundary. Observe that f(t) = Γ (s 0 )Γ (s 0 )f(t) = Γ (s 0 )Υ(0) Γ (s 0 )Υ([, ]) = D D. Step (Application of the Interior Estimate). Let φ be a conformal mapping of D onto H such that φ ( ) D \ D. Let Ω = φ(d ). Then there exist real numbers a, b, c, d such that a < c < d < b, [a, b] = Ω R and l = φ ( Ω \ [c, d]) D. Let U = f (D ) and η be a conformal mapping between the unit disc and the domain U. Then the mapping ˆf = φ f η is a C diffeomorfism of the unit disc onto the domain Ω such that: (a) ˆf is continuous on the boundary T = U (it is q.c.) and (b) ˆf is C on the set T = ˆf ( Ω \ (c, d)). Let s := Im ˆf. First, note that (a) implies that s is continuous on T = U. On other hand, as ˆf C, s satisfies the condition: () s C (U). From (b) we obtain that s is C on the set T = ˆf ( Ω \ (c, d)). Furthermore, s = 0 on T = ˆf (a, b); and therefore s is C on T = ˆf (a, b). Hence: () s is C on T = T T. In other words, the function s b : R R defined by s b (θ) = s(e iθ ) is C in R. In order to apply the interior estimate, we have to prove that (3) s(z) M 0 s(z) + N 0, z U, where M 0 and N 0 are constants. To continue wee need the following lemma: Lemma.3. If f = u+iv is q.c. mapping satisfying the interior estimate inequality then u and v satisfies the interior estimate inequality. Proof. From and A := u = ( u z + u z ) = ( f z + f z + f z + f z ) B := v = ( v z + v z ) = ( f z f z + f z f z ) where µ = f z /f z. Since µ k (.) A + µ = B µ ( k) ( + k) A ( + k) B ( k).
QUASICONFORMAL HARMONIC MAPS BETWEEN SURFACES 9 As f = u + i v M f + N = M( u + v ) + N, the relation (.) yields and Since ˆf = φ f η, we obtain ( + k) u M ( k) u + N ( + k) v M ( k) v + N. (.3) ˆf = φ fη, ˆf = φ fη and (.4) ˆf = 4 ˆf = 4 (φ f) η = (φ f f + φ f) η. Now combining (.), (.3) and (.4) we obtain ˆf 4 φ φ ˆf ˆf + φ f η 4 φ φ ˆf ˆf + φ ( M f + N ) η φ φ ˆf + M ˆf ( φ = φ + M φ φ + N φ η ) ˆf + N φ η. As ˆf is a k- q.c. mapping using Lemma.3 we have ( ( + k) φ (.5) s ( k) φ + M ) φ s + N φ η. Proposition.8 implies that the function η is bounded from above by a constant C, the function φ is bounded from below and above by positive constants C and C 3 respectively and the function φ is bounded from above by a constant C 4. Hence s M 0 s + N 0, where ( ( + k) C4 M 0 = ( k) C3 + M ) and N 0 = C C C N. 3 Proposition. implies that, the function s is bounded by a constant b t. Since ˆf is a k q.c. mapping, we have Finally, ( k) ˆf ˆf ˆf s z b t. ˆf + ˆf + k k b t. Since the mapping η is conformal and maps the circle arc T = (φ f η) (a, b) onto the circle arc (φ f) (a, b), it follows that it can be conformally extended across the arc T = (φ f η) [c, d]. Hence, there exists a constant A such that
0 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ η (z) A on T. It follows that there exists r (0, ) such that η (z) A in T = {ρz : z T, r ρ }. It follows from the Proposition.8, that the conformal mapping φ and its inverse have the C extension to the boundary. Therefore there exists a positive constant B such that φ (z) B on some neighborhood of φ [c, d] with respect to D. Thus, the mapping f = φ ˆf η has bounded derivative in some neighborhood of the set η(t ), on which it is bounded by the constant Then C = + k b t k AB. f(z) + f(z) C 0 for all z U near the arc T = η(t ). Theorem.4. Let f be a quasiconformal C diffeomorphism from the plane domain Ω with C,α compact boundary onto the plane domain G with C,α compact boundary. If there exist constants M and N such that (.6) f M f + N, z Ω, then f has bounded partial derivatives in Ω. In particular it is a Lipschitz mapping in Ω. Proof. According to the Theorem. for every t Ω there exists r t > 0 such that f has bounded partial derivatives in Ω D(t, r t ). Since Ω is a compact set it follows that there exists t,...,t m such that Ω m i= D(t i, r ti ). It follows that f has bounded partial derivatives in Ω m i= D(t i, r ti ). Since f is diffeomorphism in Ω we obtain that f has bounded derivatives in the compact set Ω \ m i= D(t i, r ti ). The conclusion of the theorem now easily follows. Corollary.5. Let Ω be a plane domain with C,α compact boundary and G be a plane domain with C,α compact boundary. If w = f(z) : Ω G is quasiconformal solution of the equation (.7) αw xx + βw xy + γw yy + a (z)w x + b (z)w x w y + c (z)w y + a(z)w x + b(z)w y + c(z)w + d(z) = 0, such that α, β, γ R, α > 0, αγ β > 0, a, b, c, d, a, b, c C(Ω), then f is Lipschitz. Proof. Since the PDE (.7) is elliptic, we can choose coordinates x = α u + β v, y = β u + γ v such that (.7) becames (.8) w uu + w vv + a (u, v)w u + b (u, v)w u w v + c (u, v)w v + a (u, v)w u + b (u, v)w v + c (u, v)w + d (u, v) = 0, (u, v) Ω. For e C(Ω ) let e = max{ e(u, v) : (u, v) Ω }. Using (.8) and the inequality t t + we obtain ( a ) ( w + b ( w + ) + max{ a, c } + b ) w + c w + d where = M w + N, M = ( a + b )/ + max{ a, c } + b
QUASICONFORMAL HARMONIC MAPS BETWEEN SURFACES and N = a + b + c w + d. The conclusion now follows from Theorem.4. Theorem.6. If f is a quasiconformal harmonic mapping between two C,α disklike surfaces S and S, then it is a Lipschitz mapping i.e. there exists a constant C such that d(f(x), f(y)) Cd(x, y), for all x, y S. Proof. Let f be a harmonic q.c. mapping between disk-like surfaces S and S. Let Y : U S and Y : U S be conformal mappings. Let us consider the mapping g = X f Y of the unit disk onto itself. Since f(y (z)) = X(g(z)), it follows that f Y x + f Y y = X u ( g x + g y ). Hence (.9) E[f Y ] = E X [g] = Ω X u ( g x + g y )dxdy. If we denote ρ(w) = X u (w), then the stationary points of the energy integral E X [g] satisfies the Euler-Lagrange equation (.0) g zz + (log ρ) w gg z g z = 0. Consequently f Y is harmonic if and only if g is ρ harmonic i.e. the mapping satisfying the relation (.0). According to the Corollary.9, the mapping g satisfies the conditions of Theorem.4. Namely as (log ρ) w M and g z g z /( g z + g z ) we can simply take M = M /, and N = 0. Theorem.4 yields that g is Lipschitz. By Theorem.7 it follows that X and Y are bi-lipschitz mapping. f is Lipschitz as a composition of Lipschitz mappings. Using Theorem.6 we obtain the theorem: Theorem.7. If f is a quasiconformal harmonic mapping between C,α surfaces S and S, with C,α compact boundary then it is a Lipschitz mapping i.e. there exists a constant C such that d(f(x), f(y)) Cd(x, y), for all x, y S... Further results. Let Γ be a closed Jordan curve in R 3. Then S is called a generalized minimal surface spanning Γ if S is represented by a triple of real valued functions (.) X(z) = (u(z), v(z), w(z)) : { z } R n, z = x + iy = re iθ such that (a) u, v, w are harmonic in z < and continuous in z (b) x and y are isothermal parameters in z <, i.e., and X x = u x + v x + z x = u y + v y + z y = X y X x X y = u x u y + v x v y + w x w y = 0. 12 DAVID KALAJ AND MIODRAG MATELJEVIĆ A solution to Plateau s problem for Γ is a generalized minimal surface spanning Γ, and a solution may be normalized by specifying that three fixed points on z = correspond to three fixed points on Γ. Consider the analytic functions of which u, v, w are the real parts: λ(z) = u(z) + iu (z), µ(z) = v(z) + iv (z) and η(z) = w(z) + iw (z). Then the condition (b) is equivalent to condition: λ (z) + µ (z) + η (z) = 0, z <. It was noted by Weierstrass that if the boundary Γ of a minimal surface S contains a straight line segment α, then the surface may be extended analytically as a minimal surface across α, by use of the reflection principle. In 95 H. Lewy [7] proved that if α is an analytic arc then the surface can be extended analytically across α. For bounded behavior of minimal surfaces see the paper of J. C. C. Nitsche [9]. In that paper Nitsche proved among other results the following Proposition.8. If Γ C l,α for l and 0 < α <, then X(z) C l,α in z and the Holder constant for the l th derivatives of X(z) is the same for all solutions of Plateau s problem, i.e., they depend only on the geometrical properties of Γ. If X is a conformal mapping between the unit disk and the minimizing surface S spanning a C curve Γ then neither S neither X has not branch points i.e. the points z < such that X u X v = 0. See [0] and [6]. If in addition assume that γ C, then X has smooth extension to the boundary of the unit disk and the boundary function has not branch points i.e. the points z : z = such that X u X v = 0, see [6]. Hence (.) c := min z X u X v = min z X u > 0. Using these facts and Proposition.8 it follows that, every minimizing surface spanning C,α Jordan curve is disk-like C,α surface. Now according to Theorem.6 we deduce: Theorem.9. If S and S are minimizing surfaces spanning C,α Jordan curves Γ and Γ, and f a harmonic q.c. mapping between S and S, then f is Lipschitz... A question. Is quasi-conformal harmonic mapping between two C l,α surfaces with C l,α compact boundary bi-lipschitz mapping? References [] K.Astala, T. Iwaniec, G. Martin, J.
