18 Rational and Irrational numbers RATIONAL NUMBERS: Rational numbers are the ratio of two integers. Rational numbers can be integers, fractions, repeating decimals, decimal numbers that have an end value (i.e.; don t go on forever) and perfect squares, cubes, etc. 5 5 Examples: 5,,, 00, , , , Note: The line over a number indicates a repeating decimal Example of a rational number between -5 and -6 is -5.5 IRRATIONAL NUMBERS: Irrational numbers are numbers that are not rational. They are in between rational numbers. They include square roots that are not perfect squares, non-repeating decimals. Examples: ,,, 00, 7 3,, , , Example of a irrational number between 5 and Note that the period marks after the number indicate that is a non-repeating decimal.
