Global existence for a strongly coupled reaction diffusion system Said Kouachi, Kamuela E. Yong, & Rana D. Parshad arxiv: v [math.ap] 3 Apr 4 Abstract In this work we use functional methods to prove the boundedness and global existence of solutions for a class of strongly coupled parabolic systems. We apply the results to deduce the global existence of solutions for a classic Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto SKT) type model, for an extended range of the self-diffusion and cross-diffusion coefficients than those available in the current literature. We provide numerical simulations in D, via a spectral Galerkin method to verify our global existence results, as well as to visualize the dynamics of the system. Keywords: strongly coupled parabolic system, SKT model, spectral Galerkin method. Introduction Modeling species interactions occupies a central theme in spatial ecology and mathematical biology. Many of these models take the form of reaction diffusion equations, the reaction terms describe both interspecies and intra-species dynamics, including factors such as birth and death. The diffusion represents random spatial movement of the species. Recently there has been a lot of activity concerning models the diffusion of one species may be influenced by another species. These models come under the class of strongly coupled parabolic systems [4, 7] and are also known in the literature as cross-diffusion systems. Although these models may be more realistic from a biological or modeling point of view as they naturally incorporate inter-species and intra-species competition), they are more difficult to handle mathematically than their constant coefficient, pure diffusion counterparts. Their classical applications are immense and there are new potential applications ranging from bee pollination [47] to pedestrian flow [3]. Among the first efforts to model cross-diffusion was the model system proposed in [4] by Shigesada, Kawasaki and Teramoto. This model and its variants are now known as SKT models. For a detailed steady state analysis of this model one can see [7]. In the current work, we consider the following cross-diffusion system which is a generalized form of the SKT model, u t [P u u + P v v] = fu, v) = u a b u + c v) in R +, ) v t [Qu u + Q v v] = gu, v) = v a + b u c v) in R +, ) with the boundary conditions u η = v η = on R+, 3) and the initial data u, x) = u x), v, x) = v x) in, 4) kouachi@hotmail.com Department of Mathematics, College of Science, Qassim University, P.O.Box 6644, Al- Gassim, Buraydah 545, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. kamuela.yong@asu.edu Mathematical, Computational and Modeling Sciences Center & School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, ,USA. rparshad@clarkson.edu Department of Mathematics, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY 3699, USA.
{ P u = d + α u + α v, P v = b u, Q u = b v, Q v = d + α u + α v. Also, to simplify the notations, we let 5) P = P u u + P v v, Q = Q u u + Q v v. The domain is an open bounded domain of class C in R N, with boundary and denotes the η outward normal derivative on. The components u and v of the solution to system )-) are nonnegative functions which represent the population densities of the two interacting species, respectively, and d and d are positive constants representing the random diffusion rates of the two species respectively. The initial data are functions in W,p ) p > N) and assumed to be nonnegative which imply, via the maximum principle [45], the positivity of the solution on its interval of existence. The constants a i, b i, c i i =, ) are any real numbers with b, c > b and c are either both nonpostive or both positive, and sufficiently small. Also we may have c b <, with one positive and one negative, with the positive one sufficiently small in 48), 49). The constants α ij, b ii i, j =, ) are nonnegative constants: α and α are the self-diffusion rates, α and α are the cross-diffusion rates and b, b are the gradient cross-diffusions. When α = b, α = b and b <, c < then )-) is in fact the SKT model [4]. However, when the reaction diffusion systems include cross-diffusion as in )-), there are not many results: When d > d, α = α =, a = b = c =, an analogous system describing epidemics, M. Kirane and S. Kouachi established in a series of papers [3], [4] and [5] global existence and asymptotics. Shim [43] proved the existence of global solutions to )-4) in the space dimension N =, when d = d and α = α = or when < α < 8α and < α < 8α. Also in the space dimension N =, the same author established global existence when α =. Recently, Shenghu Xu in [5] showed global existence when α = in two cases: when α = or when α > and N <. The condition α = implies by simple application of the maximum principle, the uniform boudedness of ut,.) on [, T max [, T max denotes the eventual blowing-up time in L ). There is a large literature on this class of models, and the interested reader is referred to [, 6, 9, 3, 3, 34, 39, 4]. Recently a number of sophisticated tools that include the use of Compatano and Morrey spaces, as well as Entropy functional techniques have been devised and applied to these problems. For details the reader is referred to [4, 3, 4]. On the more applied side, Yong et al. [47] considered a diffusion system, modeling the interactions between honey bees and solitary bees using a form of the SKT model. They derived a number of interesting conclusions from their work by restricting the self-diffusion and cross-diffusion coefficients and compared their simulation results to field data [47]. We focus on [], the author considered )-), however he imposed the restriction that the reaction terms should be negative if either u or v is sufficiently large. This is not necessary in our case, since the second reaction term can be large for u v. In [] the author proves global existence when b and c are non-positive, under the following conditions i) α α + α α b b, ii) α α > b, iii) α α > b. 6) When α ij = i, j =, ), and b and c are of opposite signs, the system is the well-known Lotka-Volterra prey-predator model. In this case and for more general reactions and boundary conditions many results have been obtained. For more details see, N. Alikakos [], K. Masuda [3], S. L. Hollis, R. H. Martin and M. Pierre [], J. Morgan [33]. In this paper we prove boundedness of solutions to )-4) when α > α and α > α under the following condition α α ) α α ) > b b, 7) then, using the following every regularity result of bounded solutions to )-4) due to [[], Theorem.], we deduce global existence of solutions in more general cases without restriction on the space dimension.
Theorem.. Assume that d i, α ij, b ii >, i, j =, and α α + α α b b. 8) Let V = α α b ) and V = α α b ). We assume one of the following holds i) V = and V, or vice versa, ii) V V >, iii) d d ) V V ) [α α ) α α ) b b ] >. Then bounded positive weak solutions to ) with 4) are Hölder continuous. 9) In reality, this every regularity result of bounded solutions to )-4) obtained by [] is very interesting. However, the author was hindered, by not being able to show the boundedness of the solutions, and proved global existence only in the case when V > and V >. Furthermore we remark that the second and third inequalities in conditions 6) of [] imply the first inequality when it is a strict inequality, and contradict it in the case of equality. In Section we state our main results, then we present our proofs in Section 3. In Section 4 we prove various results to a particularly interesting triangular system. Lastly, in Section 5 we present the numerical simulations. Statement of the main results For initial conditions in W,p p > N), it was proved in [], that solutions to problems more general than )- 4) exist locally in time. For the global existence, it was proved that solutions to )-4) exist globally in time if one has control on both of their L and Hölder norms. This is in contrast to classical reaction diffusion systems see [8, 9, 36, 38, 45]) one need only control the L norms of solutions. Counterexamples in [] confirmed this: bounded weak solutions of certain strongly coupled systems may blow up in finite time. Our aim is to construct a polynomial Lyapunov functional see [6], [7], [8], [9], [], and [35]) depending on the solution u, v) of system )-). We then use functional methods to derive their L bounds, via this functional. Next, we apply known results to show their Hölder continuity, and thus deduce their global existence. More precisely, we will use a quadratic form according to the solution u, v) of system )-) to prove the following result concerning the boundedness of solutions Theorem.. Under the unique condition 7), positive solutions of problem )-4) are bounded on [, T max [ by constants depending on initial data and the reaction terms. Then, we will use Theorem. to deduce that bounded solutions of system )-) are Hölder continuous. We will give, under less restrictive assumptions, the proof of the following Theorem.. Assume one of the following holds i) V = and V >, or vice versa, ii) α α > b and α α > b, iii) d > d, α α > b, α α < b and 7), iv) d < d, α α < b, α α > b and 7), then weak solutions with nonnegative initial data to )-4) are classical and exist globally. Remark that the conditions in 6) are more restrictive than ), for example, when d > d we can take < α α < b and α α ) > b such that 7) is satisfied. We consider here systems of two equations with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, but our main results here are applicable to those of more equations and with other suitable boundary conditions. For a given function w, we will denote by w + the nonnegative part of w, sup{w, } and with a slight abuse of notation, we will write H u = H u u, v), H uv = H u v u, v), H = x H t, x)) and so on. 3 )
3 Proofs In this section, we study the boundedness of solutions to )-4), for this purpose we consider the following quadratic form H u, v) = λu + uv + µv, ) λ and µ are positive constants such that λµ = K for some constant K which we suppose to be greater than to assure the positive definiteness of H u, v). We define a subset of R + as a neighborhood of a local solution as follows Γ = {u t, x), v t, x)) : < t < T max, x }. ) For the proof of the Theorem. on the boundedness of solutions to )-4), we need some Lemmas and apply the following see D. Le []) Theorem 3.. If there exist positive real numbers λ and C such that { P H u + Q H v, H u P + H v Q) H λ H, 3) and H u f + H v g, 4) for all u, v) Γ {u, v) : Hu, v) > C }, then the solution u, v) of Problem )-4) is bounded. Proof. We use the following functional Lt) = [H C) + ] dx, 5) C > max {C, H } and H = sup x Hu x), v x)). Differentiating L with respect to t yields L t) = [H u P + H v Q] H C) + dx + {H u fu, v) + H v gu, v)} H C) + dx := I + J, 6) I = H C) + [H u P + H v Q] dx, 7) and J = H C) + {H u fu, v) + H v gu, v)} dx. 8) {H>C} then by simple application of Green s formula with the boundary conditions 3), we get I = { [H u H C) + ] P + [H v H C) + ] Q} dx = {H u P + H v Q) H + P H u + Q H v ) H C) + } dx. 9) {H>C} Using 3) we get I λ H dx. {H>C} 4
From 4), we have J, then by integration with respect to t we get [H C) + ] dx t + λ t {H>C} H dxdt. ) Since H C) + = when t =, we deduce H C) + = for all t, T ) and this gives H C on, T ). But H u, v) λ u + v, λ) for u, v, so we conclude that the solution is bounded by some constant depending on C and the initial data. Lemma 3.. Under condition 7), the first inequality in 3) is satisfied Proof. The first condition 3) is satisfied if we prove the positivity of the following quadratic form in u and v : Ψ = P H u + Q H v = P u H uu + Q u H uv ) u + [H uu P v + P u + Q v ) H uv + Q u H vv ] u v + P v H uv + Q v H vv ) v, ) which can be written as follows Ψ u, Ψ v and Ψ d are the following quadratic forms Ψ = uψ u + vψ v + Ψ d, ) Ψ u = α H uu u + [b H uu + α + α ) H uv ] u v + b H uv + α H vv ) v, Ψ v = α H uu + b H uv ) u + [α + α ) H uv + b H vv ] u v + α H vv v, Ψ d = d H uu u + d + d ) H uv u v + d H vv v. 3) By applying to each of the above quadratic forms the inequality A u + B u v + C v C u + ) A v, 4) for positive numbers A, B, and C, with we get Ψ u If we choose λ such that u C u = B 4AC, ) + v u := A u u b + µα ) + v α λ ) u, 5) u = b λ α + α ) 4α α K ). 6) b λ α + α ) 4α α K ) <, 7) then the positivity of the quadratic form Ψ u, amounts to the following condition < λ < α α ) + α α K ) b. 8) For the second quadratic form, we have ) ) Ψ v u + v u v := C v A v α µ + v b λ + α ) v, 9) v = [µb α + α ] 4α α K ). 3) 5
By choosing µ such that the quadratic form Ψ v is positive, under the condition [µb α + α ] 4α α K ) <, 3) < µ < α α ) + α α K ) b. 3) Finally, we have Ψ d u C d ) ) + v u d = A d d µ + v d, 33) λd d = d + d ) 4K d d. 34) Then under condition 7), we can find a neighborhood of K = such that for all λ and µ satisfying 8) and 3) with λµ = K, we have the first inequality in 3). Remark 3.3. We observe that, among the proof of Lemma 3., we can prove P H u + Q H v λ + u + v) u + v ), 35) for all u, v) Γ {u, v) : Hu, v) > C }, λ is a positive constant. Lemma 3.4. Under condition 7), the second inequality in 3) is satisfied. Proof. For the second condition 3) which amount to the positivity of the following quadratic form in u and v : Φ = H u P + H v Q) H λ + u + v) H = A u + B u v + C v 36), A = H u P u + H v Q u ) H u λ + u + v) Hu, B = H u P u + H v Q u ) H v + H u P v + H v Q v ) H u λ + u + v) H u H v, C = H u P v + H v Q v ) H v λ + u + v) Hv. and λ any positive constant such that However, a simple calculation shows that its discriminant is given by 37) λ < min {d i, α ij ; i, j =, } 38) = [H u P u + H v Q u ) H v H u P v + H v Q v ) H u ] = [H u P u d ) + H v Q u ) H v H u P v + H v Q v d )) H u + d d ) H u H v ]. 39) Let us begin with the case d = d : The discriminant can be written as follows = { αu 3 + β [b λ b ) u b µ b ) v] uv + γv 3}, 4) α = λ [ b λ + α α )], β = λµ ), γ = [b µ + α α )] µ. Using 7) and 3) we can find a positive constant C 3 such that 4) C 3 K ) H 3, 6

When d d, then the discriminant becomes = [ αu 3 + β [b λ b ) u b µ b ) v] uv + γv 3 + d d ) H u H v ] [ αu 3 + β [b λ + b ) u + b µ + b ) v] uv + γv 3] + [d d ) H u H v ]. 4) Since H u H lim v =, u+v then for all ɛ >, we can find positive constants C 4 and C such that uniformly in a bounded neighborhood of K =. Since C 4 K + ɛ ) H 3, for all u + v > C 43) A = [H u P u + H v Q u ) λ + u + v) H u ] H u = [λu + v) d λ + α λ ) u + α λ ) v) + u + µv) b v] λu + v), C = H u P v + H v vq v ) H v λ + u + v) Hv = [λu + v) b u + u + µv) d λ + α λ ) u + α λ ) v)] u + µv), 44) are positive homogeneous polynomials in u > and v > of third degree and as a simple calculation shows that C 5 u + v ) H H C 6 u + v ) H, 45) for some positive constants C 5 and C 6, then using inequality 4), we can find another constant C 7 and a constant C independent of K bounded) such that H u P + H v Q) H λ + u + v) H C 7 K + ɛ ) u + v) H, 46) for all u + v > C. Taking ɛ < λ condition 3). C 7 and a neighborhood of K = in which K < λ C 7, we get the second Remark 3.5. We observe that, in the proof of Lemma 3.4, we can prove for all u, v) Γ {u, v) : Hu, v) > C }. Condition 4) is assumed by the following Lemma 3.6. Condition 4) is satisfied. Proof. We have with Since then we have 4). H u P + H v Q) H λ + u + v) H, 47) H u f + H v g = a u λu + v) + a v u + µv) Φ u, v), 48) Φ u, v) = λb u 3 + λc + b b ) u v + c + c µb ) uv + µc v 3. 49) a u λu + v) + a v u + µv) lim =, u+v Φ u, v) Proof. of Theorem. Using the above lemma, we deduce easily the inequalities 3) and 4) of Theorem 3. and then the boundedness of the positive solutions to problem )-4) under the condition 7). Proof. of Theorem. The proof is an immediate consequence of Theorem., Theorem., and the preliminary observations. 7
4 Application to a triangular system In this section we study the system when there is self-diffusion in one species, without gradient cross-diffusion in the other. Specifically we investigate the following triangular system u t [P u u + P v v] = fu, v) = u a b u + c v) in R +, 5) v t [Qv v] = gu, v) = v a + b u c v) in R +, 5) with the same boundary conditions and initial data when α > α. In the special case when b = α and α =, the system 5)-5) has been extensively studied [6, 7,, 3, 5]. In these works global existence is obtained under some restrictive conditions on the coefficients, or for small N. The result is obtained by [8] for N =, then by other authors for N 5 [7], and also for N < [46]. Recently, and again only in the case when b = α =, and α > α :=, the result is generalized to any spacial dimension N []. The authors in [] use the maximum principle for the system to exploit the first equation 5), which can be obtained from ) by taking b = α. The authors tried to obtain an L p bound for v and subsequently established L p bounds for u for sufficiently large p and proved global existence. However this type of gradient estimates is not known, so they use more than 4 lemmas, and sophisticated Moser iteration methods for the proof, and deduce the L bounds of u and v, since the maximal principle is directly applicable to the equation for v, to deduce its L bound. Here we extend the above result when α > α >. Our strategy of proving this is based on functional methods and well known techniques [] for these sorts of triangular system L estimates in finite intervals are sufficient to deduce global existence. Proposition 4.. Suppose that α > α, then weak solutions with nonnegative initial data in W,p p > N) of system 5)-5) with boundary condition 3) are classical and exist globally. Proof. First of all, since gu, v) = v a b u c v) a v, then by testing the equation 5) by v M) + for M sufficiently large, we easily derive the uniform boundedness of the component v of the solution to the system 5)-5) on [, T max [ by a constant depending on the initial data. Then following the same steps as in the proof of Lemma 3., we prove the positivity of the quadratic form Ψ u under condition 8). Since v is bounded, we do not need the positivity of the quadratic form Ψ v, and this gives the first inequality in 3). In order to show the second inequality in 3), we follow the same reasoning as in the proof of Lemma 3.4, but inequality 4), after application of Young s inequality turns out to be, and +, = [ αu 3 + β [b λ + b ) u + b µ + b ) v] uv ] = [ γv 3 + d d H u H v ]. Using 7) and the equality λµ = K, we can find a positive constant C 3 such that C 3 K ) H 3, 5) in a neighborhood of K =. Since v is bounded and H u H v is a homogeneous polynomial of u and v with second degree, then lim u+v H 3 =, which gives 46) and then the second inequality in 3). The condition 4) is given by Lemma
5 Numerical Simulations and discussion We perform our numerical simulations in MATLAB R3b, in two space dimensions with domain = [, π] [, π]. We denote x = x, y) and ν = ν, ν ). The spectral Galerkin method [4] was used to approximate u, v defined in )-), as u n) := n j,k= µ,j,kϕ j,k, v n) := n j,k= µ,j,kϕ j,k, ϕ j,k x, y) = π π π π, if j, k = cosky), if j =, k cosjx), if j, k = cosjx) cosky), if j, k, 53) Using the methods described in [47] µ i,j,k i =, ) can be expressed as the following ordinary differential equation that can be solved using the Matlab function ode3: d dt µ, j, k = a j + k )d )µ, j, k j + k n n ) α + α + b )µ,l,m µ, l, m l,m= l, m= n n + α µ,l,m µ, l, m + α µ,l,m µ, l, m + b µ,l,m µ, l, m ) l,m= l, m= n n b µ, l, m + c µ, l, m )µ,l,m ϕ j, k ϕ l,mϕ l, m l, m= l,m= A similar method is used to approximate µ,j,k. ϕ l,m ϕ l, m ϕ j, k ϕ l,m ϕ l, m ϕ j, k We now provide the results of numerical simulations on )-4). For a detailed analysis of the steady states of )-4) the reader is referred to [7]. The steady states are essentially divided into two cases. The weak competition case: B > A > C, and the strong competition case: B < A < C. Here B = b b, A = a a and C = c c. It is well known that in the weak competition cases we have convergence to steady state, while in strong competition case, cross-diffusion might create spatial patterns. Our primary goal is to simulate cases under various initial conditions, we choose coefficients such that Condition iv) of ) is satisfied. We selected two cases see Table ).
