H-SUPERMAGIC LABELINGS FOR FIRECRACKERS, BANANA TREES AND FLOWERS RACHEL WULAN NIRMALASARI WIJAYA 1, ANDREA SEMANIČOVÁ-FEŇOVČÍKOVÁ, JOE RYAN 1, AND THOMAS KALINOWSKI 1 arxiv: v [cs.dm] 7 Jun 017 Abstract. A simple graph G = (V,E) admits an H-covering if every edge in E is contained in a subgraph H = (V,E ) of G which is isomorphic to H. In this case we say that G is H-supermagic if there is a bijection f : V E 1,..., V + E } such that f(v) = 1,..., V } and v V (H ) f(v)+ e E(H ) f(e) is constant over all subgraphs H of G which are isomorphic to H. Extending results from [9], we show that the firecracker F k,n is F,n -supermagic, the banana tree B k,n is B k 1,n -supermagic and the flower F n is C 3 -supermagic. Keywords. H-supermagic covering, cycle-supermagic covering, firecracker graph, banana tree graph, flower graph 1. Introduction The graphs considered in this paper are finite, undirected and simple. For a positive integer n we denote the set 1,...,n} by [n], and for integers a b, the set a,...,b} is denoted by [a,b]. Let V(G) and E(G) be the set of vertices and edges of a graph G. A graph labeling is an assignment of integers to the vertices or edges, or both, subject to certain conditions. Graph labeling was first introduced by Rosa [8] in Since then there are various types of labeling that have been studied and developed (see [1]). For a graph H, a graph G admits an H-covering if every edge of G belongs to at least one subgraph of G which is isomorphic to H. A graph G = (V,E) which admits an H-covering is called H-magic if there exists a bijection f : V E [ V + E ] and a constant f(h), which we call the H-magic sum of f, such that v V (H ) f(v) + e E(H ) f(e) = f(h) for every subgraph H G with H = H. Additionaly, if f(v) = [ V ] then we say that G is H-supermagic. The concept of H-supermagic labeling was introduced by Gutiérrez and Lladó [] in 005, for H being a star or a path. In [4], Lladó and Moragas constructed cycle-supermagic labelings for some graphs. Furthermore, Maryati et al. [5] studied path-supermagic labelings while Ngurah et al. [7], Roswitha et al. [10] and Kojima [3] proved that some graphs have cycle-supermagic labelings. Some results for certain shackles and amalgamations of a connected graph have been proved by Maryati et al. [6]. Recently, Roswitha and Baskoro [9] established H-supermagic coverings for some trees. Roswitha and Baskoro [9] show that for any integer k and even n, the firecracker graph F k,n is F,n - supermagic and the banana tree graph B k,n is B (k 1),n -supermagic and left the remaining cases as open problems. In this paper, we solve these two problems. The result for banana trees is an immediate consequence of a theorem about amalgamations of graphs from [6] which we recall in Section. The result for firecrackers in Section 3 is obtained by a similar method. In addition, we prove in Section 4 that for odd n, the flower graph F n is C 3 -supermagic.. Amalgamations and banana trees Let H be a graph with n vertices, say V(H) = v 1,...,v n } and m edges, say E(H) = e 1,...,e m }. Take k copies of H denoted by H 1,...,H k and let the vertex and edge sets be V(H i ) = v i 1,...,vi n } and E(H i ) = e i 1,...,e i m}. Fix a vertex v V(H), without loss of generality v = v n, and form a graph, 1 School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University of Newcastle, 308 NSW, Australia Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Technical University, Letná 9, Košice, Slovakia addresses: rachel.wijaya@uon.edu.au, andrea.fenovcikova@tuke.sk, joe.ryan@newcastle.edu.au, thomas.kalinowski@newcastle.edu.au. 1
G = A k (H,v) by identifying all the vertices v 1 n,...,vk n (and denoting the identified vertex by v n). The following theorem was proved in [6]. Theorem 1 ([6]). Let H be any graph, and let v V(H). If G = A k (H,v) contains exactly k subgraphs isomorphic to H then G is H-supermagic with H-supermagic sums f(h) = 3(n+m) 1 + k() if (m+)(k 1) is even, 3(n+m) + k[() +1] if (m+)(k 1) is odd. For the convenience of the reader we provide an explicit description of the labeling. Proof. The graph A k (H,v) has k()+1 vertices and km edges. We define the labeling as follows. (1) () f : V(A k (H,v)) E(A k (H,v)) [k()+1] Case 1.: If n+m is odd, we start with f(v n ) = 1. Then we use the labels,...,k()+1 for the remaining vertices: f(v j i ) = 1+(i 1)k +j if i is odd, for i [], j [k]. ik + j if i is even, Finally we use the labels k()+,...,k()+1 for the edges: f(e j i ) = 1+(i+n )k +j if i+ is odd, for i [], j [k]. (i+)k + j if i+ is even, The sum of the labels used for H j is independent of j: f(v n )+ f(v j i )+ m f(e j i ) = 1+,i odd [1+(i 1)k +j]+,i even [ik + j] = 3(n+m) 1 + k(). Case.: If n+m is even and k is odd, we start with f(v n ) = 1. Next we use the labels,...,3k+1 to label the vertices v j i for i [3], j [k] (assuming that n 4, otherwise use the first edges in the obvious way): f(v n )+ f(v j 1 ) = 1+j f(v j ) = 3(k +1)/+j for j [(k 1)/], (k +3)/+j for j [(k +1)/, k], f(v j 3 ) = 3k + j for j [(k 1)/], 4k + j for j [(k +1)/, k]. Then we use the labels 3k+,...,k()+1 forthe remainingvertices, applying (1) for i [4,]. Finally, we use the labels k()+,...,k()+1 for the edges, applying (). The sum of the labels used for H j is independent of j: 3 f(v j 1 )+ m f(v j i )+ f(e j i ) i=4 = 1+ 9(k +1) + i=4,i odd [1+(i 1)k +j]+ i=4,i even [ik + j] = 3(n+m) 1 + k().
Case 3.: If n + m is even and k is even, we start with f(v n ) = k/ + 1. Next we use the labels 1,...,k/, k/ +,...,3k + 1 to label the vertices v j i for i [3], j [k] (assuming that n 4, otherwise use the first edges in the obvious way): f(v j 1 ) = j for j [k/], f(v n )+ j +1 for j [k/+1, k], f(v j ) = 3k/+1+j for j [k/], k/+1+j for j [k/+1, k], f(v j 3 ) = 3(k +1) j for j [k/], 4k+ j for j [k/+1, k]. Then we use the labels 3k +,...,k(n 1) + 1 for the remaining vertices, applying (1) for i = 4,...,. Finally, we use the labels k()+,...,k()+1 for the edges, applying (). The sum of the labels used for H j is independent of j: 3 f(v j 1 )+ m f(v j i )+ f(e j i ) i=4 = (k/+1)+ 9k +8 + i=4,i odd [1+(i 1)k +j]+ i=4,i even = 3(n+m) [ik+ j] + k[ () +1 ] Let H be the graph obtained by taking a star with n vertices and connecting an additional vertex v to exactly one leaf of the star. The banana tree B k,n is the graph A k (H,v). Corollary 1. For any integers k and n k +, the banana tree B k,n is B 1,n -supermagic. The condition n k+ is needed because otherwise B k,n contains more than k subgraphs isomorphic to B 1,n. We do not have this problems for H = B l,n with l, and therefore we get the following result. Corollary. For any integers n, k and l [,k 1], the banana tree B k,n is B l,n -supermagic. In particular, for l = k 1, this solves the open problem in [9]. Remark 1. Note that the labeling strategy in the first case of the proof of Theorem 1 immediately gives the following result. Fix an induced subgraph H of H, say induced by the last l vertices, and form a graph, G = A k (H,H ) by identifying the vertices v 1 i,...,vk i for i = n l+1,...,n. If n l+ E(H)\E(H ) is even and G contains exactly k subgraphs isomorphic to H, then G is H-supermagic. 3. Attaching copies of a fixed graph to a path Let G be a graph with n vertices, say V(G) = v 1,...,v n } and m edges, say E(G) = e 1,...,e m }. Let P k, k, be a path with vertex set V(P k ) = w 1,w,...,w k } and edge set E(P k ) = w 1 w,...,w k 1 w k }. Take k copies of G denoted by G 1,G,...,G k and let the vertex and edge sets be V(G i ) = v i 1,...,v i n} and E(G i ) = e i 1,...,ei m }. Fix a vertex v V(G), without loss of generality v = v n, and attach the copies of G to the path such that the vertex v i n V(Gi ) is identified with the vertex w i in P k, i = 1,,...,k. The resulting graph is denoted by P k (G,v). Theorem. Let G be graph with n vertices and m edges and let k be an integer. If ()(k 1) is even and P k (G,v) contains exactly k 1 subgraphs isomorphic to P (G,v), then P k (G,v) is P (G,v)- supermagic with supermagic sum (n+m)[(n+m+1)k +1]+ k/. Proof. The graph P k (G,v) has kn vertices and (m+1)k 1 edges. We define the labeling f : V(P k (G,v)) E(P k (G,v)) [(m+n+1)k 1] 3.
as follows. For the path vertices, we use the first k labels 1,...,k: (i+1)/ if i is odd, f(w i ) = k/ +i/ if i is even, for i [k]. For the path edges, we use the the labels in [(m+n)k +1,(m+n)k +(k 1)]: f(w i w i+1 ) = (n+m+1)k i for i [k 1]. For labeling the remaining elements we distinguish two cases. Case 1.: If is even, we set (3) (4) f ( vj i ) jk +i if j is odd, = (j +1)k +1 i if j is even, f ( e i ) (+j)k +i if +j is odd, j = (n+j)k +1 i if +j is even, Case.: If is odd and k is odd, we set for j [], i [k], for j [m], i [k]. m A i = f(vj i )+ f(e i j )+f(w i) = j=1 j=1 f(v1) i = k +i f(v i ) = (5k +1)/+i for i [(k 1)/], (3k +1)/+i for i [(k +1)/, k], f(v3 i ) = 4k +1 i for i [(k 1)/], 5k +1 i for i [(k +1)/, k]. As in the proof of Theorem 1, (3) and (4) are used for labeling the remaining vertices and edges. Denoting the sum of the labels used for G i by A i, we obtain (i+1)/ if i is odd, ()(n+m+1)k +() + k/ +i/ if i is even. Finally, the sum of the labels of the subgraph isomorphic to P (G,v) which is formed by G i, G i+1 and the edge w i w i+1 is independent of i: A i +A i+1 +f(w i w i+1 ) = (n+m)[(n+m+1)k +1]+ k/. Remark. We think that it might be possible that the parity assumption in Theorem is not necessary, and we leave the case that both n+m and k are even for future work. Example 1. We illustrate the construction in Theorem for k = 5, G = K4 (the graph obtained from a complete graph on 4 vertices by deleting one edge) and v being a vertex of degree 3 in G. We obtain the P(K4,v 4)-supermagic labeling shown in Figure 1. Corollary 3. Let G = K 1, be a star with n 4 vertices, and let v be a pendant vertex of G. The firecracker graph is F k,n = P k (G,v). Since V(G) + E(G) = n 1 is odd, and there are exactly k 1 subgraphs isomorphic to F,n, the firecracker F k,n is F,n -supermagic with supermagic sum ()(nk + 1)+ k/. 4. C 3 -Supermagic Labeling of the Flower Graph F n A flower graph F n is constructed from a wheel W n by adding n vertices, each new vertex adjacent to one vertex on the cycle and the center of the wheel with vertex set V = x 0 } x i : 1 i n} y i : 1 i n} and edge set E = x 0 x i : 1 i n} x 0 y i : 1 i n} x i y i : 1 i n} x i x i+1 : 1 i n}, where indices are interpreted modulo n in the obvious way. 4
Figure 1. P (K 4,v 4)-supermagic labeling for P 5 (K 4,v 4). We consider four permutations π 1,...,π 4 of the set [n], and define a total labeling of the flower graph F n as follows. Lemma 1. Define f(x 0 ) = n+1, f(x i ) = π 1 (i) f(y i ) = π (i)+n+1 f(x 0 x i ) = π (i)+5n+1 f(x 0 y i ) = π (i)+4n+1 π 3 (i)+n+1 odd i f(x i y i ) = π 3 (i)+3n+1 even i f(x i x i+1 ) = π 4 (i)+n+1+ n+1 for i []. ϕ i 1(π 1,...,π 4 ) = π 1 (i)+π 1 (i+1)+π (i)+π (i+1)+π 4 (i)+ n+1 1, ϕ i (π n if i is even, 1,...,π 4 ) = π 1 (i)+3π (i)+π 3 (i)+ 0 if i is odd. If ϕ i k (π 1,...,π 4 ) is equal to a constant ϕ for all i [n] and k 1,}, then the labeling given above is C 3 -supermagic with supermagic sum f(c 3 ) = 13n+5+ϕ. Proof. The flower graph F n contains n subgraphs H 1,...,H n isomorphic to C 3. We distinguish two types of3-cycles: (1) cyclesinduced byvertexsetsx 0, x i, x i+1 }, and ()cycles induced byvertexsetsx 0, x i, y i }. Case 1.: Cycle (x 0,x i,x i+1 ). The sum of the vertex labels is (5) f(x 0 )+f(x i )+f(x i+1 ) = n+1+π 1 (i)+π 1 (i+1), and the sum of the edge labels is (6) f(x 0 x i )+f(x i x i+1 )+f(x 0 x i+1 ) = π (i)+π (i+1)+π 4 (i)+1n+3+ n+1. 5
Taking the sum of (5) and (6), we have the supermagic sum f(c 3 ) = n+1+π 1 (i)+π 1 (i+1)+π (i)+π (i+1)+π 4 (i)+1n+3+ n+1 [ = 13n+5+ π 1 (i)+π 1 (i+1)+π (i)+π (i+1)+π 4 (i) 1+ n+1 ] = 13n+5+ϕ i 1(π 1,...,π 4 ) = 13n+5+ϕ. Case.: Cycle (x 0,x i,y i ). The sum of the vertex labels is (7) f(x 0 )+f(x i )+f(y i ) = n++π 1 (i)+π (i), and the sum of the edge labels is (8) f(x 0 x i )+f(x i y i )+f(x 0 y i ) = π (i)+π (i)+π 3 (i)+ Taking the sum of (7) and (8) gives the supermagic sum f(c 3 ) = 13n+5+ϕ i (π 1,...,π 4 ) = 13n+5+ϕ. 11n+3 if i is odd, 1n+3 if i is even. In the following lemma we provide permutations π 1,...,π 4 which satisfy the condition in Lemma 1. Lemma. Define the permutations by π 1 (i) = i, (i+1)/ for odd i, π (i) = n+1 i/+(n+1)/ for even i, (i+1)/ for odd i, π 3 (i) = i/+(n+1)/ for even i, π 4 (i) = n+1 i. Then for every i [n] we have ϕ i 1(π 1,...,π 4 ) = ϕ i (π 1,...,π 4 ) = 3n+. Theorem 3. For any odd integer n, the flower graph F n is C 3 -supermagic. Proof. The total labeling of F n can be obtained by applying the permutations in Lemma to the labeling construction. Using the value of ϕ in Lemma and the supermagic the sum of the permutations in Lemma, we have the constant supermagic sum on flower graph F n Hence, flower graph F n is C 3 -supermagic, for odd n. f(c 3 ) = 13n+5+ϕ = 13n+5+3n+ = 16n+7. Example. UsingLemmaforn = 7wegetthepermutationsπ 1 = (1,,3,4,5,6,7),π = (7,3,6,,5,1,4), π 3 = (1,5,,6,3,7,4) and π 4 = (7,6,5,4,3,,1). These permutations give the labeling for F 7 shown in Figure.
