Steele Department of Physics and Engineering Physics University of Saskatchewan Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7N 5E2, Canada. August 9, 218 Astract We utilize asymptotic Padé-approximant methods to estimate the three-loop order MS-scheme coefficients within the inclusive u ν l l decay rate for four and five active quark flavours. The estimates we otain for the three renormalization-group-accessile coefficients within the three-loop contriution are all found to e within 5.1% of their true values, using a least-squares procedure in conjunction with an asymptotic Padéapproximant estimate of the three-loop term over the entire µ m domain. Given the input values α s(m Z) =.118±.4 and m (m ) = 4.17±.5GeV, the three-loop expression for the purely-perturative contriution to the u ν l l decay rate is minimally sensitive to renormalization scale at µ = 1.775GeV, at which scale the three-loop contriution is estimated to e only 1.4% of the leading tree-order contriution. We estimate the full perturative decay rate to e 192π 3 Γ( u ν l l )/ ( G 2 F V u 2) = 27GeV 5 ±16%, inclusive of theoretical uncertainties from series truncation, the input parameters, and the estimation procedure. One of the outstanding issues in B physics is the accurate determination of the CKM matrix element V u, whose magnitude corresponds to one side of the unitarity triangle. Experimental determination of the angles within this triangle is anticipated soon from B-factories, i.e. BELLE and BaBar detectors, and from experiments y the CDF and CLEO III collaorations. A more precise determination of V u can test the consistency of of the CKM picture of quark mixing within the standard model. The value of V u can e extracted from the inclusive semileptonic width Γ(B X u ν l l ) once a more accurate determination of this decay rate ecomes availale. In order to reduce the theoretical uncertainty in this rate, it is useful to determine its purely perturative QCD corrections as accurately as possile. In perturative QCD, the inclusive semileptonic u decay rate Γ( u ν l l ) may e expressed as [1] ( 1 K Γ(µ,m (µ),x(µ)) = m 5 (µ) 1 + [a a 1 log(w)]x(µ)+ [ 1 log(w)+ 2 log 2 (w) ] x 2 (µ) + [ c c 1 log(w)+c 2 log 2 (w) c 3 log 3 (w) ] ) x 3 (µ)+... 2 where x(µ) α s(µ) π, w = w(µ,m (µ)) m2 (µ) µ 2, K G2 F V u 2 192π 3. (2) If m is identified with a scale-independent pole mass, the known first and second order terms within (1) appear to e poorly convergent ecause of the proximity of a Borel-plane singularity [1, 2]. In ref. [1], this prolem is averted y employing MS renormalization in which m is identified with a scale-dependent (running) -quark mass for four or five active flavours. The one- and two-loop order MS coefficients within (1) are then given y [1] all n f : a = , a 1 = 5, n f = 5 : = , 1 = , 2 = , n f = 4 : = , 1 = , 2 = (3) We utilize asymptotic Padé-approximant methods in the present note to extract an estimate of the threeloop order contriutions to (1). Such estimates are then tested against explicit (MS) renormalization-group (RG) determinations of c 1, c 2, and c 3 (the coefficient c is RG-inaccessile to order x 3 ). We also find, as in [1], that the optimal value of the scale parameter µ (determined y scale-insensitivity) for evaluating (1) is sustantially elow m (m ) [defined to e the solution to µ = m (µ)]. We then present an estimate of the magnitude and theoretical uncertainties of the inclusive semileptonic u decay rate (1). To egin, consider a truncated perturative series N+1 S N+1 = 1+ R n x n n=1, S lim N S N (4) in which {R 1, R 2,..., R N+1 } are known. We seek to utilize Padé approximant methods to estimate the first unknown term R N+2 x N+2 within the series S. For example, the set of coefficients {R 1, R 2,..., R N+1 } is sufficient to generate an [N 1] approximant to the series S, S [N 1] = 1+a 1x+...+a N x N 1+ 1 x, such that the first N +2 terms of the Maclaurin expansion for S [N 1] correspond to the truncated series S N+1. The next term of this Maclaurin expansion represents a Padé-approximant estimate of R N+2 x N+2. Specifically, we find that R [N 1] N+2 = R2 N+1 R N. To improve such an estimate, we note that the relative error of an [N M]-approximant estimate [as in (6)] to terms in a perturative field-theoretical series is anticipated to e [3, 4, 5, 6, 7] (5) (6) δ [N M] N+M+1 R[N M] N+M+1 R N+M+1 R N+M+1 M!A M = (N +M(1+a)+) M. (7) In (7), R [N M] N+M+1 is the estimate for R N+M+1 otained from a Maclaurin expansion of the [N M] approximant generated y the first N +M terms of a series S. Consequently, δ N+M+1 is the relative error associated with such a Padé estimate, and the constants A, a, and serve to parameterize this relative error. We now use (7) to otain an improved estimate of the three-loop coefficient R 3 in a series, given knowledge only of the one- and two-loop coefficients R 1 and R 2. If M = 1 and if we assume (as in prior applications [7, 8]) that a + =, we see from sustitution of (6) into (7) that δ [ 1] 2 = R2 1 R 2 R 2 = A, (8) δ [1 1] 3 = R2 2 /R 1 R 3 R 3 = A/2. (9) 2
Sustituting (8) into (9), we see that [9] R 3 = 2R 3 2 R 1 (R 2 1 +R 2). (1) For the perturative series on the right-hand side of (1), oth the known coefficients R 1,2 and the unknown coefficient R 3 are explicitly of the form [see (1)]: R 1 (w) = a a 1 log(w), R 2 (w) = 1 log(w)+ 2 log 2 (w), (12) R 3 (w) = c c 1 log(w)+c 2 log 2 (w) c 3 log 3 (w). (13) To otain the unknown coefficients c 3 within the three-loop order term R 3 (w), we compare moments of R 3 (w) over the ultraviolet region < w 1 [i.e., µ m (m )], as otained from sustitution of (11) and (12) into (1), to the same moments otained explicitly from (13): 1 N k = (k +2) = (k +2) 1 [ dww k+1 2R2(w) 3 ] R 1 (w)(r1 2(w)+R 2(w)) dww k+1[ c c 1 log(w)+c 2 log 2 (w) c 3 log 3 (w) ]. (14) Using the n f = 5values givenin (3) forthe knowncoefficients {a 1, 2 }, we otainthe followingset ofequations: N 1 = = c +c 1 +2c 2 +6c 3, (15) N = = c c c c 3, (16) N 1 = = c c c c 3, (17) N 2 = = c c c c 3. (18) The solution of these equations are our estimates of the three-loop coefficients in (1) for the case of five active flavours: n f = 5(est.) : c = 2.5, c 1 = 251.4, c 2 = 19.5, c 3 = (19) True values for the coefficients c 1 3 (ut not c ) can e extracted from the invariance of the physical transition rate (1) under changes of scale µ [1], = µ d [ dµ Γ(µ,m (µ),x(µ)) = µ µ ( γ x+γ 1 x 2 +γ 2 x ) m ( β x 2 +β 1 x ) ] Γ,(2) m x an equation whose order-x 3 contriutions vanish provided c 1 = 2 β +a β 1 +γ (5 2 1 )+γ 1 (5a 2a 1 )+5γ 2, c 2 = 1 2 [2 1β +a 1 (β 1 +5γ 1 )+γ ( )], (21) c 3 = 2 3 (2β +5γ ). Using the n f = 5 values in (3) and the values β = 23/12, β 1 = 29/12, γ = 1, γ 1 = 253/72, and γ 2 = for five active flavours, we find from (21) that n f = 5 : c 1 = , c 2 = , c 3 = (22) (11) 3
The estimates (19) for c 1 3 are all within 7% of these correct values. 1 Since we do not know the true value of c, it is important to test whether the value otained in (19) is stale when the estimates of c 1 3 derived from (15 18) are replaced with the true values given in (22). If we utilize (22) explicitly within (15 18), we otain four separate determinations of c, which are respectively given y c = 26., 24.8, 23. and These results are all within 1% of each other, and 1 3% aove the estimate otained in (19). A further consistency check on the c estimate is to construct a least-squares fit of equation (1) to the form of eq. (13) over the entire region µ m (m ): χ 2 (c,c 1,c 2,c 3 ) = 1 [ 2R 3 dw 2(w) R 1 (w)(r1 2(w)+R 2(w)) ( c c 1 log(w)+c 2 log 2 (w) c 3 log 3 (w) ) ] 2. (23) The minimization requirements χ 2 / c i = lead to the following estimates for c i : n f = 5(est.) : c = 198.4, c 1 = 26.6, c 2 = 183.9, c 3 = 48.64, χ 2 min = 1.55 (24) Note that c 1 3 are all within 4.5% of their true values (22), and that the small value for χ 2 min implies a precise fit of (1) to the form of (13) over the entire interval < w 1. The estimates of c otained in (24) and (19) are remarkaly close. If true values (22) for c 1 3 are sustituted directly into χ 2, minimization with respect to the only remaining variale c leads to the estimate n f = 5(est.) : c = 26., (25) identical to that otained y a similar sustitution into (15). We shall focus on this particular estimate when estimating the rate (1), despite the fact that it is 3 4% aove the estimates in (19) and (24), ecause this estimate incorporates the RG-determinations of values for c 1 3. The procedures delineated aove can also e applied to the case of four active flavours. Utilization of the n f = 4 values for {a 1, 2 }, as taulated in (3), in the first integrand of (14) leads to the following numerical values for the moments N k : N 1 = , N = , N 1 = , N 2 = (26) If these values are incorporated into (15 18), the solution to the resulting set of equations is n f = 4(est.) : c = 182.7, c 1 = 271.9, c 2 = 21.4, c 3 = (27) True values for c 1 3 are RG-accessile via eqs. (21), with n f = 4 values for {a 1, 2 } as listed in (3), and with β = 25/12, β 1 = 77/24, γ = 1, γ 1 = 263/72, and γ 2 = for four active flavours. The correct values are n f = 4 : c 1 = , c 2 = , c 3 = (28) which are within 5.3% of their estimated values in (27). As efore, the incorporation of the correct values (28) into the moment equations (15 18) with numerical values (26) for n f = 4 moments leads to four separate estimates for c {188.2, 188.3, 186.4, 185.4} that are remarkaly consistent, and all less than 3% aove the estimate in (27). Moreover, minimization of the χ 2 function (23) using (11) and (12) with n f = 4 values for {a 1, 2 } yields estimates for c 1 3 all within 5.1% of their true values (28); i.e., χ 2 / c i = when n f = 4(est.) : c = 181.5, c 1 = 277.3, c 2 = 197.6, c 3 = 51.86, χ 2 min =.579 (29) The aove estimate for c is within 1% of that otained in (27). If one incorporates into χ 2 the true values (28) for c 1 3, one finds that χ 2 / c = when n f = 4(est.) : c = 188.2, 1 The moment methodology delineated aove has also een employed with similar success to the RG-accessile order-x 3 terms of the gluonic scalar-current correlation function [1] and the CP-odd Higgs oson decay rate [11]. (3) 4
analogous to the estimate (25) for five active flavours. To examine the consistency of the Padé-approximant methodology leading to (3), one can otain an estimate of the n f = 4 value for c directly from (25) via comparison of four- and five-active-flavourexpressions for the decay rate (1). Suppose for n f = 5 [indicated henceforth y the superscript (5) ] that we evaluate (1) at µ = 4.17GeV in order to coincide with (the central value of) an empirical estimate of m (5) (m ) [12], and we choose x (5) (4.17GeV) = , a value devolving (numerically) via the four-loop β-function from α (5) s (M Z ) =.118 (the corresponding input value in [12]). If we sustitute into (1) the n f = 5 estimate (25) for c and known n f = 5 values (3) for a and, and if we note that log(w) = when µ = m (5) (µ), the defining relationship for m (5) (m ), we find that Γ (5) K = (4.17GeV)5 [ ]= GeV 5 (31) The same rate can e evaluated for the case of four active flavours with c left aritrary y sustituting into (1) the n f = 4 RG values (28) for c 1 3 and the n f = 4 values (3) for {a 1, 2 }, and y utilizing following threshold-matching conditions [13] to otain values for x(4.17gev) and m (4.17GeV) appropriate for four active flavours, as indicated y the superscript (4) : [ [ ] 2 [ ] ] 3 x (4) (4.17GeV) = x (5) (4.17GeV) x (5) (4.17GeV) x (5) (4.17GeV) = , (32) [ [ ] 2 [ ] ] 3 m (4) (4.17GeV) = m (5) (4.17 GeV) x (5) (4.17GeV) x (5) (4.17GeV) = GeV (33) [ ] We note that log(w) = 2log m (4) (µ)/µ is no longer zero, and we otain from (1) the following four-active-flavours expression for the rate: Γ (4) K = ( c ) GeV 5 (34) Equating (31) to (34), we find that c in the latter expression is 188.3, a value in startlingly close agreement with the independent estimate (3). Thus, at the five-flavour threshold m (5) (m ) = 4.17GeV, equiliration of the elow-threshold and aove-threshold expressions for the inclusive semileptonic u rate is seen to corroorate the consistency of the independent c estimates (3) and (25) for four and five active flavours. As noted in [1], the series (1) will exhiit some µ dependence as an artifact of its truncation; i.e., the three loop expression for Γ is suject to O(x 4 ) violations of (2). In Figure 1, we display this residual µ dependence of the rate Γ[µ]/K oth elow and aove the five-flavour threshold, which is assumed (as aove) to occur at m (5) (m ) = 4.17GeV. For µ greater than this threshold, we otain Γ[µ]/K utilizing known n f = 5 values (3,22) for {a 1, 2,c 1 3 } in conjunction with the estimate (25) for c. The aove-threshold values for m (5) (µ) and x (5) (µ) are evolved numerically via n f = 5 four-loop RG-functions from the specific values m (5) (4.17GeV) = 4.17GeV and x (5) (M Z ) =.118/π. For µ less than 4.17GeV, we utilize known n f = 4 values (3,28) for {a 1, 2,c 1 3 } in conjunction with the estimate (3) for c. The elow-threshold values for x (4) (µ) and m (4) (µ) are evolved via n f = 4 four-loop RG-functions from the specific values for x (4) (4.17GeV) and m (4) (4.17 GeV) otained in (32) and (33). We note that the maximum of the rate exhiited in Fig. 1 occurs at µ = 1.775GeV (near the τ mass), and that Γ[1.775 GeV] K = [5.1213GeV] 5 [ ] = 271GeV 5. (35) This value corresponds to the minimal-sensitivity [14] prediction of the decay rate. In order to get a handle on the theoretical uncertainty of this estimate, we will assume that there exists a idirectional series truncation error equal to the three-loop contriution to (35). An additional source of theoretical 5
uncertainty is the error associated with the estimate (3) for c. This uncertainty should e comparale to the explicit error in estimating c 1, c 2, and c 3 y the same least squares fitting procedure in (29). Comparing the true values (28) to these estimates, we have already noted that such errors are 5% or less, a value we shall assume to characterize error in the estimate (3). Such an error estimate is upheld y the range 198 < c < 26 otained in the different methodological approaches to determining c [see (19,25)]. As noted aove, the estimate (35) is ased upon (correlated [12]) input values α s (M Z ) =.118 and m (5) (m ) = 4.17GeV. The errors associated with these estimates are ±.4 and ±.5 GeV, respectively [12]. Finally, we quote the ref. [15] estimate of the nonperturative (NP) contriution to Γ/K: ( ) ( ) Γ = m 3 9λ2 +λ 1,.5GeV 2 λ 1, λ 2 =.12GeV 2 (36) K 2 NP Taking into account all of these uncertainties, we estimate that 192π 3 Γ( u ν l l ) G 2 F V u 2 = 271GeV 5 ±51GeV 5 ±35GeV 5( ) GeV 5 ( ) GeV 5 ( ) GeV 5 (37) where the listed set of uncertainties respectively correspond to uncertainties associated with series truncation, the c estimate, the value for α s (M Z ), the value for m (5) (m ), and the nonperturative contriution (36). The truncation error listed in (37) may well e excessive. The series in (35) appears to e an alternating series whose final term is quite small. If this alternating character is retained for higher orders of x, then the series within (35) is ounded from aove y the sum of its first three terms and ounded from elow y the sum of all four known terms, in which case the truncation error should e unidirectional: ( ) Γ 271GeV GeV 5 (38) K true The aove suggests that truncation error at this point of minimum scale-sensitivity may lead to a spread as small as ±1.3%. However, the smallness of the order-x 3 contriution suggests that the series (35) may e asymptotic, consistent with the anticipated ehaviour (R N N!B N N c [16]) underlying eq. (7). If such is the case, the magnitude ofthe order-x 4 -and-higherterms maywell increasewith order. Since the value foraquantityrepresented y an asymptotic series is otained y a sum of only its decreasing terms (with an error comparale to the smallest such term), an optimal determination of (Γ/K) true may well e otained y choosing µ such that the order-x 3 term vanishes. This value of µ = 1.835GeV corresponds to the point of Figure 2 at which the two-loop and three-loop expressions for Γ/K cross: Γ(1.835 GeV) K = 269GeV 5 The estimates (35) and (39) are 8% larger than the rate (31) at the five-flavour threshold. The former values represent a superior estimate for the true rate, since the rate at this point is locally insensitive to the renormalization scale parameter µ. The discrepancy etween (31) and (35) can e understood y noting that (31) appears to e a positive term series. If convergent, a truncated positive term series is necessarily an underestimate of the series sum. Indeed, theratedisplayedin Fig. 1fallsoffevenmore(asnotedin[1])forvaluesofµaovethefive-flavourthreshold m (5) (m ). This progressive fall off can e understood y noting that the entire set of coefficients {a 1, 2,c 3 } is positive, and that when µ increases aove the five-flavour threshold, log(w) ecomes increasingly negative. Consequently, we see from (1) that the coefficients of x, x 2, and x 3 ecome increasingly positive, more than offsetting the decrease in x itself with increasing µ. This serves to increase the magnitude of the successive terms within the positive term series, which necessarily implies an increase in the truncation error, as well as a progressive underestimation of the full rate, as a consequence of truncation to three-loop order. One way to oviate these difficulties and to recover (approximate) scale invariance of the full series for the rate Γ is to estimate this sum via the use of Padé approximants. For example, such Padé-summation of the known series within the Bjorken sum rule has een shown [4] to reduce sustantially the scale dependence of the sumrule-extracted value for α s. This reduction in scale dependence via the sustitution of (diagonal or near-diagonal) (39) 6
Padé approximants in place of truncated field-theoretical perturative series has een more generally estalished in reference [5]. For the case of the inclusive semileptonic u decay rate, we display in Figure 3 the three-loop truncated rate together with its corresponding [1 2] and [2 1] approximants [i.e., the [1 2] and [2 1] Padé-summations of the truncated perturative series S 3, as defined y (4)]. The approximants are seen to exhiit sustantially less µ- dependence than the three loop expression for the rate, and are seen to e reasonaly close to the minimal-sensitivity value otained in (35). The [2 1] approximant to the rate remains etween 21GeV 5 and 229GeV 5 over the range 4.17GeV µ 9GeV, and the [1 2] approximant remains etween 1956GeV 5 and 253GeV 5 over the same range. By contrast, the truncated series itself is seen from Figure 3 to fall from 1913GeV 5 at µ = 4.17GeV to 1733GeV 5 when µ = 9 GeV. At present, the experimental uncertainties in direct measurements of the inclusive semileptonic u decay rate are sustantially larger than the theoretical uncertainties listed in (37); e.g., recent ALEPH [17] and L3 [18] Collaoration ranching-ratio measurements are (1.73±.78) 1 3 and (3.3±2.) 1 3, respectively, with systematic and statistical errors comined via quadrature. Somewhat less direct measurements ased upon endpoint region measurements of the Υ(4S) decay spectrum are characterized y additional model dependence, although they are utilised as a source of present experimental ounds [19] on V u : V u /V c =.8 ±.2 and V u =.37 ±.6. However, as experimental uncertainties in the semileptonic u rate are reduced, control over the uncertainty within theoretical expressions for the rate ecomes increasingly important. 2 The estimate we present aove for the unknown three-loop coefficient c is corroorated oth y concomitant success in predicting the RG-accessile three-loop terms within the theoretical rate (1), as well as y consistency etween the direct four-active-flavour(asymptotic-padé) determination of c (3) and its independent determination via (25) and (34) [i.e. via flavour-threshold matching conditions]. Given the total -decay rate Γ total = (4.249±.39) 1 13 GeV [21], our result (37) leads to the following relationship etween V u and the inclusive semileptonic ranching ratio (BR): ( ) G BR = V u 2 2 F [(271pert. 48 nonpert. )GeV 5 ±17%] 192π , GeV V u =.959 (BR) 1/2 ±9%.
