NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS Volume 3 (003), GENERALIZED POPOVICIU FUNCTIONAL EQUATIONS IN BANACH MODULES OVER A C ALGEBRA AND APPROXIMATE ALGEBRA HOMOMORPHISMS Chun Gil Park (Received March 00) Abstract. We prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of generalized Popoviciu functional equations in Banach modules over a unital C algebra. It is applied to show the stability of Banach algebra homomorphisms between Banach algebras associated with generalized Popoviciu functional equations in Banach algebras. 1. Introduction Let E 1 and E be Banach spaces with norms and, respectively. Consider f : E 1 E to be a mapping such that f(tx) is continuous in t R for each fixed x E 1. Assume that there exist constants ε 0 and p [0, 1) such that f(x + y) f(x) f(y) ε( x p + y p ) for all x, y E 1. Th.M. Rassias [11] showed that there exists a unique R linear mapping T : E 1 E such that f(x) T (x) ε p x p for all x E 1. Throughout this paper, let A be a unital C algebra with norm, U(A) the unitary group of A, A in the set of invertible elements in A, A sa the set of self-adjoint elements in A, A 1 = {a A a = 1}, and A + 1 the set of positive elements in A 1. Let A B and A C be left Banach A modules with norms and, respectively. Let n and k be integers with k n 1. Recently, T. Trif [19] generalized the Popoviciu functional equation ( ) ( x + y + z 3f +f(x)+f(y)+f(z) = f 3 ( x + y ) + f ( y + z ) + f ( z + x )) Mathematics Subject Classification Primary 47B48, 39B7, 46L05. 2 184 CHUN GIL PARK Lemma A. [19, Theorem.1] Let V and W be vector spaces. A mapping f : V W with f(0) = 0 satisfies the functional equation ( ) x1 + + x n n n n C k f + n C k 1 f(x i ) n = k i=1 1 i 1< <i k n ( ) xi1 + + x ik f k for all x 1,, x n V if and only if the mapping f : V W satisfies the additive Cauchy equation f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y) for all x, y V. The following is useful to prove the stability of the functional equation (A). Lemma B. [10, Theorem 1] Let a A and a < 1 m for some integer m greater than. Then there are m elements u 1,, u m U(A) such that ma = u 1 + +u m. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of the functional equation (A) in Banach modules over a unital C algebra, and to prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of algebra homomorphisms between Banach algebras associated with the functional equation (A).. Stability of Generalized Popoviciu Functional Equations in Banach Modules over a C Algebra Associated with its Unitary Group We are going to prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of the functional equation (A) in Banach modules over a unital C algebra associated with its unitary group. For a given mapping f : A B A C and a given a A, we set ( ) x1 + + x n D a f(x 1,, x n ) := n n C k af n n ( ) axi1 + + ax ik + n C k 1 af(x i ) k f k for all x 1,, x n A B. i=1 1 i 1< <i k n Theorem.1. Let q = k(n 1) n k and r = k n k. Let f : AB A C be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : A B n [0, ) such that ϕ(x 1,, x n ) := q j ϕ(q j x 1,, q j x n ) (A) < D u f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) (.i) for all u U(A) and all x 1,, x n A B. Then there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C such that for all x A B. f(x) T (x) 1 k n 1 C k 1 ϕ(qx, rx,, rx) (.ii)

GENERALIZED POPOVICIU FUNCTIONAL EQUATIONS 185 Proof. Put u = 1 U(A). By [19, Theorem 3.1], there exists a unique additive mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). The additive mapping T : A B A C was defined by T (x) = for all x A B. By the assumption, for each u U(A), for all x A B, and as n for all x A B. So lim j q j f(q j x) q j D u f(q j x,, q j x) q j ϕ(q j x,, q j x) q j D u f(q j x,, q j x) 0 D u T (x,, x) = lim j q j D u f(q j x,, q j x) = 0 for all u U(A) and all x A B. Hence D u T (x,, x) = n n C k ut (x) + n n C k 1 ut (x) k nc k T (ux) = 0 for all u U(A) and all x A B. So ut (x) = T (ux) for all u U(A) and all x A B. Now let a A (a 0) and M an integer greater than 4 a. Then a M = 1 a a < M 4 a = 1 4 < 1 3 = 1 3. By Lemma B, there exist three elements u 1, u, u 3 U(A) such that 3 a M = u 1 + u + u 3. And T (x) = T ( x) = 3T ( 1 3 x) for all x A B. So T ( 1 3 x) = 1 3T (x) for all x A B. Thus ( M T (ax) = T 3 3 a ) ( 1 M x = M T 3 3 a ) M x = M3 (3 T am ) x = M 3 T (u 1x + u x + u 3 x) = M 3 ( T (u1 x) + T (u x) + T (u 3 x) ) = M 3 (u 1 + u + u 3 )T (x) = M 3 3 a M T (x) = at (x) for all x A B. Obviously, T (0x) = 0T (x) for all x A B. Hence T (ax + by) = T (ax) + T (by) = at (x) + bt (y) for all a, b A and all x, y A B. So the unique additive mapping T : A B A C is an A linear mapping, as desired. Applying the unital C algebra C to Theorem.1, one can obtain the following.

186 CHUN GIL PARK Corollary.. Let E 1 and E be complex Banach spaces with norms and, respectively. Let q = k(n 1) n k and r = k n k. Let f : E 1 E be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : E1 n [0, ) such that ϕ(x 1,, x n ) := q j ϕ(q j x 1,, q j x n ) < D λ f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) for all λ T 1 := {λ C λ = 1} and all x 1,, x n E 1. Then there exists a unique C linear mapping T : E 1 E such that 1 f(x) T (x) ϕ(qx, rx,, rx) k n 1 C k 1 for all x E 1. Theorem.3. Let q = k(n 1) n k and r = k n k. Let f : AB A C be a continuous mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : A B n [0, ) satisfying (.i) such that D u f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) for all u U(A) and all x 1,, x n A B. If the sequence {q j f(q j x)} converges uniformly on A B, then there exists a unique continuous A linear mapping T : AB A C satisfying (.ii). Proof. Put u = 1 U(A). By Theorem.1, there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). By the continuity of f, the uniform convergence and the definition of T, the A linear mapping T : A B A C is continuous, as desired. Theorem.4. Let q = k(n 1) n k and r = 1 n k. Let f : AB A C be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : A B n [0, ) such that ϕ(x 1,, x n ) : = q j ϕ(q j x 1,, q j x n ) < i D u f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) (.iii) for all u U(A) and all x 1,, x n A B. Then there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C such that 1 f(x) T (x) ϕ(x, rx,, rx) (.iv) n C k 1 for all x A B. Proof. Put u = 1 U(A). By [19, Theorem 3.], there exists a unique additive mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.iv). The additive mapping T : A B A C was defined by T (x) = lim j qj f(q j x) for all x A B. By the assumption, for each u U(A), q j D u f(q j x,, q j x) q j ϕ(q j x,, q j x)

GENERALIZED POPOVICIU FUNCTIONAL EQUATIONS 187 for all x A B, and as n for all x A B. So q j D u f(q j x,, q j x) 0 D u T (x,, x) = lim j qj D u f(q j x,, q j x) = 0 for all u U(A) and all x A B. Hence D u T (x,, x) = n n C k ut (x) + n n C k 1 ut (x) k nc k T (ux) = 0 for all u U(A) and all x A B. So ut (x) = T (ux) for all u U(A) and all x A B. The rest of the proof is the same as the proof of Theorem Stability of Generalized Popoviciu Functional Equations in Banach Modules over a C Algebra Given a locally compact abelian group G and a multiplier ω on G, one can associate to them the twisted group C algebra C (G, ω). C (Z m, ω) is said to be a noncommutative torus of rank m and denoted by A ω. The multiplier ω determines a subgroup S ω of G, called its symmetry group, and the multiplier is called totally skew if the symmetry group S ω is trivial. And A ω is called completely irrational if ω is totally skew (see []). It was shown in [] that if G is a locally compact abelian group and ω is a totally skew multiplier on G, then C (G, ω) is a simple C algebra. It was shown in [3, Theorem 1.5] that if A ω is a simple noncommutative torus then A ω has real rank 0, where real rank 0 means that the set of invertible self-adjoint elements is dense in the set of self adjoint elements (see [3], [6]). From now on, assume that ϕ : A B n [0, ) is a function satisfying (.i), and that q = k(n 1) n k and r = k n k. We are going to prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of the functional equation (A) in Banach modules over a unital C algebra. Theorem 3.1. Let q be not an integer. f(0) = 0 such that D 1 f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) Let f : A B A C be a mapping with for all x 1,, x n A B. Then there exists a unique additive mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Further, if f(λx) is continuous in λ R for each fixed x A B, then the additive mapping T : A B A C is R linear. Proof. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem.1, there exists a unique additive mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Assume that f(λx) is continuous in λ R for each fixed x A B. By the assumption, q is a rational number which is not an integer. The additive mapping T given above is similar to the additive mapping T given in the proof of [11, Theorem]. By the same reasoning as the proof of [11, Theorem], the additive mapping T : A B A C is R linear.

188 CHUN GIL PARK Theorem 3.. Let q be not an integer. Let f : A B A C be a continuous mapping with f(0) = 0 such that D a f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) for all a A + 1 {i} and all x 1,, x n A B. If the sequence {q j f(q j x)} converges uniformly on A B, then there exists a unique continuous A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Proof. Put a = 1 A + 1. By Theorem 3.1, there exists a unique R linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). By the continuity of f and the uniform convergence, the R linear mapping T : A B A C is continuous. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem.1, T (ax) = at (x) for all a A + 1 {i}. For any element a A, a = a+a + i a a i, and a+a and a a i are self adjoint elements, furthermore, a = ( ) a+a + ( a+a ) ( + i a a ) + ( i i a a ), i where ( a+a ) +, ( a+a ), ( a a ) +, ( i and a a ) i are positive elements (see [4, Lemma 38.8]). So ( (a ) + a + ( ) a + a ( ) a a + ( ) a a T (ax) = T x x + i x i x) i i ( ) a + a + ( ) a + a ( ) a a + = T (x) + T ( x) + T (ix) i ( ) a a + T ( ix) i ( ) a + a + ( ) a + a ( ) a a + = T (x) T (x) + i T (x) i ( ) a a i T (x) i ( (a ) + a + ( ) a + a ( ) a a + ( ) ) a a = + i i T (x) i i = at (x) for all a A and all x A B. Hence T (ax + by) = T (ax) + T (by) = at (x) + bt (y) for all a, b A and all x, y A B, as desired. Theorem 3.3. Let A be a unital C algebra of real rank 0, and q not an integer. Let f : A B A C be a continuous mapping with f(0) = 0 such that D a f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n )

GENERALIZED POPOVICIU FUNCTIONAL EQUATIONS 189 for all a (A + 1 A in) {i} and all x 1,, x n A B. If the sequence {q j f(q j x)} converges uniformly on A B, then there exists a unique continuous A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Proof. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem 3., there exists a unique continuous R linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii), and T (ax) = at (x) (3.1) for all a (A + 1 A in) {i} and all x A B. Let b A + 1 \ A in. Since A in A sa is dense in A sa, there exists a sequence {b m } in A in A sa such that b m b as m. Put c m = 1 b b m m. Then c m 1 b b = b as m. Put a m = c mc m. Then a m b as m and a m A + 1 A in. Thus there exists a sequence {a m } in A + 1 A in such that a m b as m, and by the continuity of T for all x A B. By (3.1), lim T (a mx) = T ( lim a mx) = T (bx) (3.) m m T (a m x) bt (x) = a m T (x) bt (x) bt (x) bt (x) = 0 (3.3) as m. By (3.) and (3.3), T (bx) bt (x) T (bx) T (a m x) + T (a m x) bt (x) 0 as m (3.4) for all x A B. By (3.1) and (3.4), T (ax) = at (x) for all a A + 1 x A B. The rest of the proof is similar to the proof of Theorem 3.. Theorem 3.4. Let q be not an integer. f(0) = 0 such that D a f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) {i} and all Let f : A B A C be a mapping with for all a A + 1 {i} and all x 1,, x n A B. If f(λx) is continuous in λ R for each fixed x A B, then there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Proof. Put a = 1 A + 1. By Theorem 3.1, there exists a unique R linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). The rest of the proof is similar to the proof of Theorem 3.. Theorem 3.5. Let A be a unital C algebra of real rank 0, and q not an integer. Let f : A B A C be a mapping with f(0) = 0 such that D a f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) for all a (A + 1 A in) {i} and all x 1,, x n A B. Assume that f(ax) is continuous in a A 1 R for each fixed x A B, and that the sequence {q j f(q j x)} converges uniformly on A 1 for each fixed x A B. Then there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii).

190 CHUN GIL PARK Proof. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem 3., there exists a unique R linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii), and T (ax) = at (x) for all a (A + 1 A in) {i} and all x A B. By the continuity of f and the uniform convergence, one can show that T (ax) is continuous in a A 1 for each x A B. The rest of the proof is similar to the proof of Theorem 3.3. Theorem 3.6. Let f : A B A C be a mapping with f(0) = 0 such that D a f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) for all a A + 1 {i} R and all x 1,, x n A B. Then there exists a unique A linear mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii). Proof. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem.1, there exists a unique additive mapping T : A B A C satisfying (.ii), and T (ax) = at (x) for all a A + 1 {i} R and all x AB. So the mapping T : A B A C is R linear, and satisfies T (ax) = at (x) for all a A + 1 {i} and all x AB. The rest of the proof is the same as the proof of Theorem 3.. Similarly, for the case that ϕ : A B n [0, ) is a function such that q j ϕ(q j x 1,, q j x n ) < for all x 1,, x n A B, one can obtain similar results to the theorems given above. 4. Stability of Generalized Popoviciu Functional Equations in Banach Algebras and Approximate Algebra Homomorphisms Associated with (A) In this section, let A and B be Banach algebras with norms and, respectively. D.G. Bourgin [5] proved the stability of ring homomorphisms between Banach algebras. In [1], R. Badora generalized the Bourgin s result. We prove the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of algebra homomorphisms between Banach algebras associated with the functional equation (A). Theorem 4.1. Let A and B be real Banach algebras, and q not an integer. Let f : A B be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ψ : A A [0, ) such that ψ(x, y) := q j ψ(q j x, y) <, (4.i) D 1 f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ), f(x y) f(x)f(y) ψ(x, y) (4.ii) (4.iii)

GENERALIZED POPOVICIU FUNCTIONAL EQUATIONS 191 for all x, y, x 1,, x n A. If f(λx) is continuous in λ R for each fixed x A, then there exists a unique algebra homomorphism T : A B satisfying (.ii). Further, if A and B are unital, then f itself is an algebra homomorphism. Proof. Under the assumption (.i) and (4.ii), in Theorem 3.1, we showed that there exists a unique R linear mapping T : A B satisfying (.ii). The R linear mapping T : A B was given by T (x) = lim j q j f(q j x) for all x A. Let R(x, y) = f(x y) f(x)f(y) for all x, y A. By (4.i), we get for all x, y A. So lim j q j R(q j x, y) = 0 T (x y) = lim j q j (4.1) f ( q j (x y) ) = lim j q j f ( (q j x)y ) for all x, y A. Thus = lim j q j( f(q j x)f(y) + R(q j x, y) ) = T (x)f(y) (4.) T (x)f(q j y) = T ( x(q j y) ) = T ( (q j x)y ) = T (q j x)f(y) = q j T (x)f(y) for all x, y A. Hence T (x)q j f(q j y) = T (x)f(y) (4.3) for all x, y A. Taking the limit in (4.) as j, we obtain for all x, y A. Therefore, T (x)t (y) = T (x)f(y) T (x y) = T (x)t (y) for all x, y A. So T : A B is an algebra homomorphism. Now assume that A and B are unital. By (4.), T (y) = T (1 y) = T (1)f(y) = f(y) for all y A. So f : A B is an algebra homomorphism, as desired. Theorem 4.. Let A and B be complex Banach algebras. Let f : A B be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ψ : A A [0, ) satisfying (4.i) and (4.iii) such that D λ f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) (4.iv) for all λ T 1 and all x 1,, x n A. Then there exists a unique algebra homomorphism T : A B satisfying (.ii). Further, if A and B are unital, then f itself is an algebra homomorphism. Proof. Under the assumption (.i) and (4.iv), in Corollary., we showed that there exists a unique C linear mapping T : A B satisfying (.ii). The rest of the proof is the same as the proof of Theorem 4..

19 CHUN GIL PARK Theorem 4.3. Let A and B be complex Banach algebras. Let f : A B be a mapping with f(0) = 0 for which there exists a function ψ : A A [0, ) satisfying (4.i) and (4.iii) such that D λ f(x 1,, x n ) ϕ(x 1,, x n ) f(x ) f(x) ϕ(x,, x) (4.iv) (4.v) for all λ T 1 and all x, x 1,, x n A. Then there exists a unique algebra homomorphism T : A B satisfying (.ii). Further, if A and B are unital, then f itself is a algebra homomorphism. Proof. By the same reasoning as the proof of Theorem 4., there exists a unique C linear mapping T : A B satisfying (.ii). Now q j f(q j x ) f(q j x) q j ϕ(q j x,, q j x) for all x A. Thus as n for all x A. Hence q j f(q j x ) f(q j x) 0 T (x ) = lim j q j f(q j x ) = lim j q j f(q j x) = T (x) for all x A. The rest of the proof is the same as the proof of Theorem 4.. Similarly, for the case that ϕ : A n [0, ) and ψ : A A [0, ) are functions such that q j ϕ(q j x 1,, q j x n ) <, q j ψ(q j x, y) < for all x, y, x 1,, x n A, one can obtain similar results to the theorems given above.
