Invariant mass of the decay products: Invariant mass of the γγ-system: (120 ± 20 ± 35) MeV. Consistent with π 0 mass (135 MeV). Invariant mass of the π γγ-system: ( ) MeV. Consistent with ρ (770) mass (775 MeV). (ρ (770) being created in 25% of τ decays: τ ρ (π π 0 )ν τ.) Universität Hamburg The OPERA Experiment
24 Significance of ν τ Observation Observation for 1088 decay-searched events: 1 event (1-prong hadronic τ decay channel). Background expectation (1-prong hadronic τ decay channel): Number of hadronic re-interaction events: Number of charm events: ± (syst.) events. 1.8 % probability that the observed event is a background event σ significance of ν τ observation in OPERA. Background expectation (all τ decay modes): Number of background events: ± (syst.). 4.5 % probability that the observed event is a background event σ significance of ν τ observation in OPERA. 25 Significance of ν τ Observation Observation for 1088 decay-searched events: 1 event (1-prong hadronic τ decay channel). Assumptions: m 2 23 = ev 2. sin 2 2θ 23 = 1. Signal expectation (1-prong hadronic τ decay channel): Number of ν τ CC events: 0.16 ± 0.04 (syst.). Signal expectation (all τ decay modes): Number of ν τ CC events: 0.54 ± 0.13 (syst.). Result (for sin 2 2θ 23 = 1): Exclusion of: m 2 23 > ev 2 at 90% CL. Universität Hamburg The OPERA Experiment
