1 Thermodynamic Wor Gain from Entanglement arxiv: v1 [quant-ph] 30 Jul 2012 Ken Funo, 1 Yu Watanabe, 2 and asahito Ueda 1 1 Department of Physics, The University of Toyo, Hongo, unyo-u, Toyo, , Japan 2 Yuawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Kitashiraawa Oiwae-Cho, Kyoto, Japan (Dated: July 31, 2012) We show that entangled states can be used to extract thermodynamic wor beyond classical correlation via feedbac control based on measurement on part of a composite system. The wor gain is determined by the amount of correlation that is transfered from between the subsystems to between the system and the memory. Furthermore, entangled states require less measurement cost because we can perform feedbac control without decreasing the entropy of the system, and hence the memory does not need entropy production to compensate for the feedbac gain. PCS numbers: d, Ta, a Feedbac control of thermal fluctuations has been discussed for over a century [1 12]. In a seminal wor, axwell[1] pointed out that ifan observercan accessmicroscopic degrees of freedom, the second law of thermodynamics may brea down. Szilard devised a quintessential model of axwell s demon, and showed that T ln2 of wor can be extracted from a thermodynamic cycle[2]. This result prima facie seems to contradict the second law of thermodynamics, and a number of studies have been devoted to resolve this issue [3 10]. It has recently been shown [8, 9] that extractable wor from a system is given by the mutual information content between the system and the memory, and that the samequantity setsthe bound on the total cost of measurement and erasure of information. It has also been shown that positive entropy production in measurement compensates for the wor gain via feedbac control [10], as originally suggested by Szilard[2]. Quite recently, axwell s demon[11], and the cost of information erasure[12] have been experimentally demonstrated. There has been considerable experimental interest in quantum feedbac control such as cooling mechanism [13 15] and spin squeezing [16]. There has also been a growing theoretical interest in the relation between quantum feedbac control and thermodynamics, and there are several results that exploit quantum entanglement and cannot be achieved classically [17 23]. For a quantum memory entangled with the system, wor can be extracted during the erasure process [17]. Entangled states can also be used to extract energy by controlling quantum fluctuations via feedbac control [18]. Zure argued that only the classical part of the correlation can be utilized to extract wor by LOCC [21]. In this Letter, we show that wor can also be extracted from the quantum part of the correlation. In this Letter, we address the question of whether entanglement can be utilized as a resource beyond classical correlation for the thermodynamic wor gain. For quantum correlated states with marginal thermal states, we show that wor can be extracted by feedbac control not just from thermal fluctuations but also from quantum correlations between the systems. The main result of this Letter is Eq. (2) which implies that the net wor gain depends on how much correlation is utilized via measurement and feedbac. In particular, we can extract wor for entangled states beyond classical correlation. For example, the maximum wor gain for a 2-qubit system is given by 2 T ln2 for entangledstates, whereasitis T ln2forclassicallycorrelated states [24]. This difference arises from the measurement cost (Eq. (6)) as discussed later. We consideracompositesystem, andamemory that stores information about the measurement outcome. We consider the following protocol (see Fig. 1). 1. Let the initial state be ρ = ρ ρ 0. We assume that the state of the system is initially correlated: I ( ρ : ρ ) 0, where I ( ρ : ρ ) = S(ρ ) + S(ρ ) S(ρ ) is the quantum mutual information content between and, and S(ρ) = Trρlnρ is the von Neumann entropy. The initial state of is assumed to be at thermal equilibrium with a canonical distribution ρ 0 = exp( βh0 )/Z 0, with Z0 = Trexp( βh0 ). The state can be either classically correlated or quantum-mechanically correlated. We also assume that both subsystems are at thermal equilibrium described by canonical distributions: ρ, = Tr, ρ = exp( βh, )/Z,, with Z, = Trexp( βh, ). Such a system is given by [25]: ψ = Z 1 2 e βǫ/2, (1) where, is the -th energy eigenstate of subsystems and, and Z 1 2 is the normalization constant. The reduced density matrix of this state is the canonical distribution with energy eigenvalues given by ǫ. The state (1) can be created experimentally by parametric amplification [26], and it plays a pivotal role in such diverse
2 2 emory Feedbac easurement System Feedbac controller FIG. 1. (color online). We start with an initially correlated state of the composite system. We perform a measurement on, which is part of the total system, and obtain an outcome. Depending on this outcome, we perform a local unitary operation on each system which realizes a feedbac control. phenomena as Hawing radiation [27], the dynamical Casimir effect [28, 29], and the Unruh effect [30]. 2. We perform a measurement on described by the set of measurement operators { }, where labels the measurement outcome. Then, the post-measurement state with outcome is given by ρ 1 () := ( I ) ) ρ ( I ρ /p, where p = Tr ρ is the probability for obtaining the outcome, and ρ is the density matrix of. We assume that ρ are mutually orthogonal, i.e., ρ ρ l = 0 for l. The average density matrix is given by ρ 1 = p ρ 1 (). 3. We perform a feedbac control by acting on each system local unitary operators U and U that depend on the measurement outcome. The density matrix of the system for a given outcome is given by ρ 2 () := ( ) U U ρ 1 () ( ). U U The state after the feedbac is given by ρ 2 = p ρ 2 () ρ. The main result of this Letter is that the net worgain from the initially correlated states is expressed in terms of the difference of the quantum mutual information between the initial and final states: W gain T [ I ( ρ : ρ ) I(ρ : ρ X ) ] where I ( ρ : ρ X ) = F F, (2) p [ S(ρ 1 ())+S(ρ 1 ()) S(ρ 1 ()) ] (3) is the quantum mutual information between the subsystems conditioned upon the measurement outcomes s, which give the classical probability distribution X of the memory. The free-energy difference of the system due tofeedbaccontrolisgivenby F = F F2, andeach term is defined by F = βlnz, F2 = βlnz2, and Z2 = Trexp( βh 2 ), and similarly for system. Here, the net worgain W gain = Wext +W ext W meas W eras is given by subtracting the measurement cost and erasure cost from the extractable wor from two subsystems and via feedbac control. The extractable wor is defined by Wext = E E2 = Tr ρ H Tr ρ 2 H2, and similarly for system. The wor cost for measurement is defined as Wmeas = p Trρ H Trρ 0 H0, where H describes the Hamiltonian of with outcome. The wor cost for information erasure is defined as Wmeas = Trρ 0 H0 p Trρ,can H, where ρ,can = exp( βh ). The net wor gain is determined by the amount of correlation that can be utilized via feedbac control. Since the available correlation for the quantum state is larger than the classical state, we can extract wor from the entangled state beyond classical correlation. The net wor gain depends on how much correlation is transferred from between the subsystems to between the system and the memory. This can be seen if we use the Venn diagram, since the term I ( ρ : ρ ) I(ρ : ρ X ) expresses the common information of the three states: marginal states, and the memory. It has been pointed out [22, 23] that for initially correlated states and energy conserving unitary interactions, the entropy of the subsystems never increases, and that T I ( ρ : ρ ) of wor can be extracted, where I ( ρ : ρ ) is the change in the mutual information between and, which is consistent with our result. The relation (2) shows the operational meaning of using quantum correlations as a resource to obtain the thermodynamical wor, and generalizes the relation obtained in Ref. [23]. For initially uncorrelated states, bothi ( ρ : ρ ) andi(ρ : ρ X )vanish, andinequality (2) reduces to the conventional second law for the total system including the memory: W gain F. Thus, this inequality generalizes the second law with feedbac control to initially correlated systems. y considering the cost for establishing the correlation, we can show that Eq. (2) is consistent with the conventional second law. To derive Eq. (2), we show three inequalities concerning the extractable wor Wext +W ext from feedbac control (Eq. (4)), the measurement cost Wmeas (Eq. (6)), and the information erasure cost Wcost (Eq. (7)). The extractable wor from the quantum correlated state is given by W ext +W ext F F + T [ I ( ρ : X ) +I ( ρ : X )].(4) Theproofwillbegivenlater. Theworgainthatgoesbeyond the conventional second law is expressed by the mutual information between each subsystem and the measuring device: I ( ρ : X ) = S(ρ ) p S(ρ 1 ())
3 3 and I ( ρ : X ) = S(ρ ) p S(ρ 1 ()). Here I ( ρ : X ) is the quantum-classical mutual information [8]. The wor gain for arises from the feedbac through measurement on, and the wor gain for also arises from the feedbac, but the information about is obtained by using the correlation between and. The quantity that relates the information content and the thermodynamic wor is given by T, where T is the effective temperature of the subsystem. For initially uncorrelated states, this result is consistent with the result for a single system with thermal states [8] because I ( ρ : X ) = 0 for ρ = ρ ρ. For, the result of Ref. [8] is reproduced: W ext F + TI ( ρ : X ), (5) and for, the conventional second law is obtained: W ext F. The minimal cost for measurement is given by W meas T[I ( ρ : X ) H(X )]+ F, (6) where I ( ρ : X ) = S(ρ ) p S(ρ 1 ()) is the mutual information between the total system and the memory, H(X ) = p lnp is the Shannon entropy. The free energy of with outcome is given as F = T lnz and Z = Trexp( βh ). change in the average free energy of the memory during measurement is defined as F = p F F 0. For initially uncorrelatedstates, the costi ( ρ : X ) reducestothe classical result I ( ρ : X ) [9]. The measurement cost depends on the total state because the feedbac controller already has the information gain via correlation between subsystems, and by utilizing this correlation, he can obtain the information about the state by measuring, and extract wor by controlling. If the measurement cost depends only on the subsystem, the subsystem can be traced out and the information gain via correlation is neglected. The information processing cost depends on the amount of accessible information for the feedbac controller, and in this case, the nonlocal correlation should be considered for the measurement cost. TheerasurecostisgiveninamannersimilartoRef.[9]: W eras TH(X ) F, (7) For F = 0, this inequality reduces to Landauer s principle [4]. Now, we prove the main result by combining inequalities (4), (6), and (7), and using the identity: I ( ρ : X ) + I ( ρ : X ) I ( ρ : X ) = I ( ρ : ρ ) I ( ρ : ρ X ). (8) The information gain of the feedbac controller is given by I gain = I ( ρ : ρ ) + I ( ρ : X ), where the first term arises from the correlation of the initial state, and the second term arises from the information gain due to the measurement (see Fig. 2). This information gain I gain = I ( ρ : X ) +I ( ρ : X ) +I ( ρ : ρ X ) is used for wor extraction, but due to the correlation remaining after the measurement and feedbac, the information gain is not fully utilized unless two subsystems are brought together to perform unitary transformation on the total state. For classical and quantum correlations with the same marginal states, Wext and W ext are equal. This is due to the fact that I ( ρ : X ) and I ( ρ : X ) depend on the marginal states. However, the cost of information processing Wcost differs because the initial total entropy of the system is smaller for quantum correlated states than classical ones, so the cost required for the memory to compensate for the decrease in the system s entropy via feedbac differs. Thus, if we consider the information processing cost, more wor can be extracted from the quantum correlated state, since quantum correlation is stronger than classical one. y considering a feedbac control on quantum states, Zure derived the net wor gain via local measurement and feedbac given by W = TI ( ρ : X ) [21]. The main difference between his result and ours lies in the measurement cost: TI ( ρ : X ) or TI ( ρ : X ). Zure also argued that feedbac controller who can perform nonlocal operation can utilize quantum correlation completely. In this case, the net wor gain is given by W Q = TI ( ρ : ρ ) ; thus the difference in the wor gain δ = W Q W = T[I ( ρ : ρ ) I ( ρ : X ) ] represents the quantum part of the correlation [32, 33]. For our case, the difference is given by W Q W gain = TI(ρ : ρ X ) for F = 0. Finally, we give proofs of Eqs. (4) and (6). We first calculate the difference in entropy of the marginal states during the measurement and feedbac: S(ρ )+S(ρ ) S(ρ 2 ) S(ρ 2 ) S(ρ ) p S(ρ 2 ())+S(ρ ) p S(ρ 2 ()) = S(ρ ) p S(ρ 1 ())+S(ρ ) p S(ρ 1 ()) = I ( ρ : X ) +I ( ρ : X ), (9) where we use S( p ρ ) p S(ρ ) in deriving the first inequality. y noting that S(ρ ) = lnz + Tr H ρ = βf + βe and using Klein s inequality, S(ρ 2 ) Trρ 2 lnρ can = lnz2 + βe2, we obtain Eq. (4). To show Eq. (6), we note that the entropy of the total system always increases: S(ρ ) S(ρ 2 ). This is because we perform measurements and local unitary operation on both states depending on the measurement outcome. We first calculate the total entropy of the
4 4 (a) Initial state (b) easurement (c) Feedbac FIG. 2. (color online). Entropy transfer in the protocol: (a) The subsystem and are initially entangled, and a negative entropy described by correlation between the subsystems I ( ρ : ρ ) is present. We can decrease the entropy of subsystems and by I ( ρ : ρ ), if we perform an unitary transformation on the total state. (b) easurement on the subsystem is performed, and entropy is transfered from the system to the memory. Information gain (correlation between and the memory) is described by I ( ρ : X ), whereas the memory undergoes a positive entropy production I ( ρ : X ) which compensates for the information gain. (c) Feedbac control is performed on both subsystems and to obtain negative entropy production I ( ρ : X ) and I ( ρ : X ), which arise from the initial correlation I ( ρ : ρ ) and information gain I ( ρ : X ). Consequently, the total entropy of the subsystems and decreases, and wor can be extracted from them. The correlation I ( ρ : ρ X ) between and remains nonvanishing, which we cannot utilize unless and are brought together to perform unitary transformation on the total state. final state as S(ρ 2 ) = H(X)+ = H(X)+ p S(ρ 2 ()) p [ S(ρ 2 ())+S(ρ )].(10) ecause the entropy of the total system increases, we obtain H(X) + S(ρ ) p S(ρ ) p S(ρ ) S(ρ 0 ) p Trρ lnρ,can S(ρ 0 ) = β [ F +W meas]. (11) Conclusions. We have extended the second law of thermodynamics with feedbac control to the case of initially entangled states. We have shown that wor can be extracted beyond classical correlation from entanglement. In particular, the maximal wor is given by the difference of the quantum mutual information between the subsystems via feedbac control. We have also derived the extractable wor from correlated states with feedbac control, and found the minimal costs for measurement and erasure. This present wor thus offers a unified view of the role of correlation on quantum information thermodynamics, since both the correlation between the systems and that between the system and the memory play fundamental role in thermodynamic wor gain. The results of our wor serve as the foundations for controlling quantum-correlated thermodynamic systems and set the bound on how much wor gain can be obtained from such systems.
