1 ROGERS 15 THE EFFECT OF PLAT GROWTH REGLATORS O GREE SPEED J.. Rogers, T.M. Krik, J.A. Rea Department of Crop and Soil Sienes, M.S.. East Lansing, MI 1992 RESEARCH SMMARY Golf is a game of inhes, in more ways than one. Green speed is also an aspet of golf measred in inhes, and nfortnately, has feled debates between golf rse memberships. Green speed is often the trademark of most reptable lbs, the faster the greens the better the rse (albeit not always), and is ertainly a hief means for mparisons. The following stdy, whih was initiated in 199, investigates the se of plant growth reglators (PGR) as a means of inreasing ptting green speed while maintaining qality trf. Methods As in previos years, the stdy was ndted on the amps of Mihigan State niversity at the Hank Trfgrass Researh Center. A three year old trf stand of Agrostis palstris var. 'Pennlinks' is being sed in the stdy. The design was a mpletely randomied three X five fatorial with three tting heights (.188,.157, and.125 inh) and five PGR treatments;.175 and.25 lb ai/a flrprimidol (Dow Elan Ctless 5 WP),.175 and.25 lb ai/a palobtraol (Stts Trf Enhaner 5 WP), and a ntrol. The area reeived ltral praties normally administered to greens whih inlded; biweekly vertial mowings, one lb I1 sq.ft. appliations per month, and two topdressings (one in Jne, one in Jly). The area was t six times weekly with Toro Series 1 walk behind mowers with eah tting height having a separate mower. One signifiant differene between this years stdy as opposed to previos years is that this year's stdy began in May with a total of five PGR treatments where as only two PGR appliations were administered beginning in mid-jly and Agst in previos years. Data lleted inlded stimpmeter readings; (Tables 1, 2, and 3) and qality ratings; (Tables 4, 5, and 6). The qality ratings were based on a sale of 1-9 with any vale nder six being nsidered naeptable for a ptting green setting. The data were analyed sing AOV A proedres and as shown, LSD vales at the.5 level illstrate signifiant differene.
2 16 GEERAL SESSIO There were five PGR appliations in The dates of those appliations were: 11 May, 9 Jne, 15 Jly, 5 Agst, and 24 Agst. Reslts Stirnprneter Readings As expeted, lower tting heights ased an inrease in stimpmeter readings (Table 1) for all bt one date (25 May). It took approximately 14 days following PGR treatments before stimpmeter readings were affeted. Over the rse of the stdy only one stimpmeter reading was of signifiant differene de to PGR treatment (11 Jne), (refer to Table 3). This event orred one month following the first PGR appliation and two days after the send appliation. Compared to previos years, the reslts of 1992 stimpmeter readings were somewhat disappointing and perplexing sine notieable interations had orred in the 1991 stdy. It shold be noted that we experiened an atypial smmer with below normal temperatres and higher amonts of preipitation. The atypial smmer may explain why little differenes were notied Color Ratings Color ratings were ndted on a weekly basis throgh the rse of the stdy and are presented in Tables 4, 5, and 6. The ratings were based on lor as the density was niform throghot the stdy area. (The lor sale was 1-9 with a rating lower than 6 nsidered naeptable.) Plots t at.188 inh reeived signifiantly higher lor ratings than the.125 inh plots throghot the stdy (Table 4). Similar to 1991 data, initial ratings favored the hek (ntrol) plots over the PGR areas, (refer to Table 5). earing the end of the stdy the PGR treated areas began to reeive eqivoal or higher qality ratings than the hek plots, partilarly the flrprimidol treated areas. Phytotoxiity de to the PGR treatments was not observed at any point of the stdy. Conlsions PGR for inreasing green speed withot lowering tting height and sarifiing qality are still a viable alternative and worthy of stdy. For this reason alone we plan to ntine this stdy in 1993 at the HTRC in the exat manner in 1992.
