Heat ernel approach for sup-norm bounds for cusp forms of integral and half-integral weight Anilatmaja Aryasomayajula ariv: v2 [math.nt] 3 Jul 205 Abstract In this article, using the heat ernel approach from [2], we derive sup-norm bounds for cusp forms of integral and half-integral weight. Let Γ PSL 2 R) be a cocompact Fuchsian subgroup of first ind. For 2 Z or 2Z), let S Γ) denote the complex vector space of weight- cusp forms. Let {f,...,f j } denote an orthonormal basis of S Γ). In this article, we show that as, the sup-norm for j i= y f i z) 2 is bounded by O), where the implied constant is independent on Γ. Furthermore, using results from [], we extend these results to the case when Γ is cofinite. Mathematics Subject Classification 200): 30F30, 30F35, 30F45. Introduction The main aim of this article is to demonstrate the usefulness of the heat ernel approach to study automorphic forms. J. Jorgenson and J. Kramer have successfully applied heat ernel analysis to study automorphic forms, and derived optimal estimates for various arithmetic invariants. We use a slightly different approach, which is more geometric and derive similar estimates for integral weight cusp forms as in [4]. We extend these estimates to half-integral weight cusp forms. Notation Let Γ PSL 2 R) be a cocompact Fuchsian subgroup of first ind acting on the hyperbolic upper half-plane H, via fractional linear transformations. Let denote the quotient space Γ\H, and let g denote the genus of. We assume that g >. We assume that Γ has no elliptic elements, so the quotient space admits the structure of a Riemann surface. We denote the, )-form corresponding to the hyperbolic metric of, which is compatible with the complex structure on and has constant negative curvature equal to minus one, by µ hyp z). Locally, for z, it is given by µ hyp z) = i 2 dz dz Imz) 2. Let µ shyp z) denote the rescaled hyperbolic metric µ hyp z)/vol hyp ), which measures the volume of to be one. For 2 Z or 2Z), let S Γ) denote the complex vector space of weight- cusp forms. Let j denote the dimension of S Γ), and let {f,...,f j } denote an orthonormal basis
of S Γ) with respect to the Petersson inner product. Put j B z) := y f i z) 2. With notation as above, for 2Z or 2Z), we have the following estimate i= where the implied constant is independent of Γ. sup z B z) = O), ) Let Γ now be a cofinite Fuchsian subgroup without elliptic elements, which implies that = Γ\H admits the structure of a noncompact Riemann surface of finite volume. Then, for any z and 2Z, we have and for 2Z, we have B z) 8π ; 2) B z) 2π. 3) Applications and existing results When is comoact, in proving estimate ), for any z and 2Z, we first arrive at the following estimate B z) = O), where the implied constant is independent of Γ. So, let B z) = C. Hence, for z and 2Z or 2Z) and f any smooth function on, we observe that fz)b C z)µ shyp z) = fz)µ shyp z), which proves a version of arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity conjecture in the average case for half-integral weight cusp forms. For 2Z and N N, let f be any weight- cusp form with respect to the arithmetic subgroup Γ 0 4N). Furthermore, let f be normalized with respect to the Petersson innerproduct. Then, in [3], Kiral has derived the following estimate sup y fz) 2 = O,ε N 2 +ε) 8, z Y 0 N) for any ε > 0. Using the above estimate, one can derive sup B Y0 N)z) = O,ε N 2 +ε) 8, z Y 0 N) 2
for any ε > 0. For 2Z, Friedman, Jorgenson, and Kramer have derived the estimates O) and O 3/2 ) for B z) in the cocompact and cofinite cases, respectively in [4]. Extending their heat ernel techniques from [5] to higher weights, they showed that the implied constant is independent of the Fuchsian subgroup Γ. For 2 Z, estimate ) shows the dependence of B any arbitrary cocompact Fuchsian group. on, and our result holds true for For 2Z, estimate ) gives an alternate proof for the estimate of Jorgenson and Kramer in the cocompact case. Our method is more geometric and relies on a theorem of Bouche in [2], which is based on the micro-local analysis of the heat ernel. Estimate ) extends with notational changes to cusp forms of integral and half-integral weight associated to cocompact Hilbert modular groups and Siegel modular groups. It is possible to extend estimate ) to cofinite Fuchsian subgroups by studying Bouche s methods in a cuspidal neighborhood. 2 Heat ernels on compact complex manifolds In this section, we recall the main results from [2] and [], which we usein the next section. Let M,ω) be a compact complex manifold of dimension n with a Hermitian metric ω. Let L be a positive Hermitian holomorphic line bundle on M with the Hermitian metric given by sz) 2 L := e φz) sz) 2, where s L is any section, and φz) is a real-valued function defined on M. For any N, let := + ) 2 denote the -Laplacian acting on smooth sections of the line bundle L. Let KM,L t;z,w) denote the smooth ernel of the operator e 2t. We refer the reader to p. 2 in [2], for the details regarding the properties which uniquely characterize the heat ernel KM,L t;z,w). When z = w, the heat ernel K M,L t;z,w) admits the following spectral expansion K M,Lt;z,w) = n 0 e 2t λ nϕ n z) ϕ nw), 4) where {λ n } n 0 denotes the set of eigenvalues of counted with multiplicities), and {ϕ n } n 0 denotes a set of associated orthonormal eigenfunctions. Let {s i } denote an orthonormal basis of H 0 M,L ). For any z M, the Bergman ernel is given by B M,Lz) := i s i z) 2 L. 5) For any z M and t R >0, from the spectral expansion of the heat ernel K M,L t;z,w) described in equation 4), it is easy to see that B M,Lt;z) K M,Lt;z,z) and t K M,Lt;z,z) = B M,Lt;z). 6) For z M, let c L)z) := i 2π φz) denote the first Chern form of the line bundle L. Let α,...,α n denote the eigenvalues of φz) at the point z M. Then, with notation 3
as above, from Theorem. in [2], for any z M and t 0, ε ), for a given ε > 0 not depending on, we have n K M,Lt;z,z) = n j= and the convergence of the above it is uniform in z. α j 4π) n sinhα j t), 7) Using equations6) and7), in Theorem 2. in[2], Bouche derived the following asymptotic estimate n B M,Lz) = O det ω c L)z) )), 8) and the convergence of the above it is uniform in z. When M is a noncompact complex manifold, using micro-local analysis of the Bergman ernel, in [], Berman derived the following estimate 3 Estimates of cusp forms n B M,Lz) det ω c L)z) ). 9) Let notation be as in Section. We allow Γ to be cofinite, i.e. can be a noncompact Riemann surface of finite volume. Let Ω denote the cotangent bundle over. Then, for any 2Z, cusp forms of weight with respect to Γ are global section of the line bundle Ω /2. Furthermore, recall that for any f Ω, i.e., f a weight-2 cusp form, the Petersson metric on the line bundle Ω is given by fz) 2 Ω := y 2 fz) 2. 0) Letω denotethelinebundleofcuspformsofweight 2 over. Then, forany 2Z, cusp formsofweight- withrespecttoγareglobalsection ofthelinebundleω 2. Furthermore, recall that for any f ω, i.e., f a weight- 2 cusp form, the Petersson metric on the line bundle ω is given by fz) 2 ω := y /2 fz) 2. ) Remar. For any z and 2Z, from the definition of the Bergman ernel B /2,Ω z) for the line bundle Ω /2 from equation 5), we have B /2,Ω z) = B z). Similarly, for any z and 2Z, from the definition of the Bergman ernel B2 for the line bundle ω 2 from equation 5), we have,ω z) B,ω 2 z) = B z). 2) 4
Theorem 2. Let notation be as in Section, and we assume that Γ is cocompact, i.e. is compact. Then, for 2Z or 2Z), we have the following estimate sup z B z) = O), where the implied constant is independent of Γ. Proof. We prove the theorem for 2Z, and the case for 2Z follows automatically with notational changes. For any z, observe that c ω )z) = i 2π log y /2 fz) 2), where f is any cusp form of weight 2. From the above equation, we derive c ω )z) = i dz z 6π y 2 = 8π µ hypz), whichshowsthat thelinebundleω is positive, and det µhyp c ω )z) ) = 8π. Soapplying estimate 8) to the complex manifold with its natural Hermitian metric µ hyp and the line bundle ω, and using equation 2), we find B z) = B2,ω z) = O 2det µhyp c ω )z) )) = O). As the above it convergences uniformly in z, and as is compact, we have which completes the proof of the theorem. sup z B z) = sup z B z) = O), Corollary 3. Let notation be as in Section, and we assume that Γ is cofinite, i.e. is a noncompact Riemann surface of finite volume. Then, for z and 2Z, we have and for 2Z, we have B z 8π ; B z 2π. Proof. The proof of the theorem follows from estimate 9), and from similar arguments as in Theorem 2. Acnowledgements The author would lie to than J. Kramer and J. Jorgenson for introducing him to the area of automorphic forms and heat ernels. The author would lie to express his gratitude to T. Bouche for providing him with helpful references, and to Archana S.
