1 AN EQUIVARIANT TENSOR PRODUCT ON MACKEY FUNCTORS arxiv: v4 [math.at] 3 Aug 2017 KRISTEN MAZUR Abstract. For all subgroups H of a cyclic p-group w dfin norm functors that build a -Macky functor from an H-Macky functor. W giv an xplicit construction of ths functors in trms of gnrators and rlations basd solly on th intrinsic, algbraic proprtis of Macky functors and Tambara functors. W us ths norm functors to dfin a monoidal structur on th catgory of Macky functors whr Tambara functors ar th commutativ ring objcts. 1. Introduction For a finit group, a commutativ -ring spctrum has norm maps that ar multiplicativ vrsions of th transfr maps. Ths maps ar not sn in ordinary - spctra. Morovr, w s th algbraic shadows of ths norm maps in th zroth stabl homotopy groups of commutativ -ring spctra: π 0 of a -spctrum is a Macky functor s for xampl [8]), but if X is a commutativ -ring spctrum, thn π 0 X) is a Tambara functor [2]. Thus, it is a Macky functor with a ring structur i.. a rn functor) and an xtra class of norm maps that ar th multiplicativ analogus of th transfr maps. In this papr w show that th rlationship btwn Macky functors and Tambara functors mirrors th rlationship btwn -spctra and commutativ -ring spctra. W dfin an quivariant symmtric monoidal structur on th catgory of Macky functors undr which Tambara functors ar th commutativ ring objcts. Th catgory of Macky functors is symmtric monoidal, but th commutativ ring objcts undr th symmtric monoidal product ar not Tambara functors. Notably, thy do not hav norm maps. Hill and Hopkins hav dvlopd an appropriat notion of quivariant symmtric monoidal, calling it -symmtric monoidal [3]. Thy thn call th commutativ ring objcts undr a -symmtric monoidal structur th -commutativ monoids [3]. W provid formal dfinitions of ths concpts in Sction 5. Hill and Hopkins [3], Ullman [12], and Hoyr [4] hav indpndntly dfind -symmtric monoidal structurs on th catgory Mack of -Macky functors. In this papr, for a cyclic p-group w dfin a vry xplicit -symmtric monoidal structur on Mack. Th ky to this structur is nw norm functors NH : Mack H Mack for all subgroups H of. Main Thorm. Lt b a cyclic p-group. For all subgroups H of thr is an xplicit construction of a norm functor NH : Mack H Mack that has th following proprtis. a. NH is isomorphic to th composition of functors N K N H K whnvr H < K <. Dat: August 7,
2 2 KRISTEN MAZUR b. N H is strong symmtric monoidal. Th word construction is dlibrat. ivn an H-Macky functor M w build a -Macky functor NH M basd only on th intrinsic proprtis of Macky functors and Tambara functors. W thn dfin th functor NH via th map M N H M and us th collction of ths norm functors {NH for all H } to prov th following thorm. Thorm 1.1. Lt b a cyclic p-group. Thr is a -symmtric monoidal structur on Mack so that a -Macky functor is a -commutativ monoid if and only if it has th structur of a -Tambara functor. Bcaus w rstrict th Main Thorm and Thorm 1.1 to cyclic p-groups w ar abl to xplicitly dscrib th -symmtric monoidal structur dfind on Mack. Thus, w can work with this construction to build intuition into how th structur oprats. In this rgard our dfinition of th norm functors in th Main Thorm is analogous to th xplicit dfinition of th tnsor product. Evn though dfining th tnsor product via th univrsal proprty is mor lgant and at tims asir to work with, th xplicit dfinition hlps us undrstand how th tnsor product combins two vctor spacs. Similarly, th xplicit construction of norm functors in this papr allows us to undrstand what th -symmtric monoidal structur actually dos to th objcts of Mack. Morovr, whil w fl strongly that w can xtnd our rsults at last to all finit ablian groups, many aspcts would bcom so much mor complicatd that th rsults would los thir ability to dvlop th radrs intuition for Macky and Tambara functors. Evn bfor th mrgnc of Tambara functors in quivariant stabl homotopy thory, thr was intrst in dvloping a structur on Mack that supportd Tambara functors as ring objcts. During an opn problm sssion at th 1996 Sattl Confrnc on Cohomology, Rprsntations and Actions of Finit roups T. Yoshida posd th problm of dfining a tnsor induction for Macky functors that prsrvs tnsor products of Macky functors and satisfis Tambara s axioms for multiplicativ transfr [1]. Th -symmtric monoidal structur that w crat is such a tnsor induction. W organiz this papr into th following sctions. In Sction 2 w provid two dfinitions of Tambara functors. Th first is Tambara s original dfinition. Th scond is an axiomatic and constructiv dfinition. W bas th construction of th norm functors in th Main Thorm on th scond dfinition. In Sction 3 w build th norm functors, and in Sction 4 w prov that ths functors satisfy th Main Thorm. Finally, w prov Thorm 1.1 in Sction Tambara Functors Lt S t b th catgory of sts, and lt S t F in b th catgory of finit -sts. ivn morphisms f : X Y and p: A X in S t F in w dfin th dpndnt product f A by A = y, σ) f y Y, σ : f 1 y) A is a map of sts, p σx) = x for all x f 1 y). Th group acts on f A by γy, σ) = γy, γσ) whr γσ)x) = γσγ 1 x).
3 AN EQUIVARIANT TENSOR PRODUCT ON MACKEY FUNCTORS 3 Dfinition 2.1. W will only us two cass of xponntial diagrams, and for ths it is hlpful to us th following construction. Lt H b a subgroup of and lt X b a finit H-st. Thn th -st Map H, X) is th st of all H-quivariant maps q : X with -action g q)x) = qxg) for all x and g in. Proposition 2.2. Lt f : /H / b th crush map, and lt p: A /H b a morphism in S t F in. Thn th dpndnt product f A is canonically isomorphic to Map H, p 1 H)). Proof. Th catgory of finit -sts ovr /H is quivalnt to S t F H in. Thus, th pullback functor from th catgory of finit -sts ovr / to th catgory of finit -sts ovr /H is canonically isomorphic to th rstriction functor S t F in S t F H in. Morovr, th functor A p /H) f A /) is right adjoint to th pullback functor [11]. And, th functor X Map H, X) is right adjoint to th rstriction functor. It follows that ths two right adjoints ar canonically isomorphic. Thrfor, for all p: A /H, th dpndnt product f A is canonically isomorphic to Map H, p 1 H)). Dfinition 2.3. [11] A -Tambara functor S is a tripl S, S, S ) consisting of two covariant functors S : S t F in S t and on contravariant functor S : S t F in S t S : S t F in such that th following proprtis hold. Th norm maps ar not additiv, but thr is an xplicit formula for th norm of a sum in a Tambara functor. It follows that Ψ is an isomorphism. W nd this sction with a proof of th Main Thorm. Proof of th Main Thorm. For all subgroups H of and H-Macky functors M, lt NH M b th -Macky functor dfind in Dfinition 3.2. Thn dfin th norm functors NH : Mack H Mack by M NH M. Ths maps satisfy all proprtis givn in th Main Thorm by Thorms 4.1, 4.7, and Proof of Thorm 1.1 Finally, givn a cyclic p-group, w us th norm functors NH : Mack H Mack to dfin a -symmtric monoidal structur on th catgory of -Macky functors. W will thn show that -Tambara functors ar th -commutativ monoids undr this structur, thus proving Thorm 1.1. W bgin with Hill and Hopkins dfinition of a -symmtric monoidal structur [3]. Finally, to show that Proprty 3 of Dfinition 5.1 holds it suffics to show that /K /H) M = /K /H M) for all orbits /H and /K of. W start by proving th forward implication in Proposition 5.4 and lav th rvrs implication to Proposition 5.7. Proposition 5.4. Lt M b a -Macky functor and ndow Mack with th - symmtric monoidal structur of Thorm 5.2. If M has th structur of a Tambara functor, thn M is a -commutativ monoid. C
26 26 KRISTEN MAZUR To prov Proposition 5.4 w nd to show that if S is a Tambara functor, thn a map X Y of -sts inducs a map X S Y S of Macky functors. Sinc th box product is th coproduct in T amb H [10, Prop 9.1], if both H and H ar subgroups of H with H < H, thn w dfin NH H to b th /H fold box product of th norm map NH H in S. Lastly, w must dfin th norm NH : S /H H/H) NH S)/). This norm is th composition of th multiplication map of S with th map N : SH/H) NH S)/) dfind in Rmark 3.3. Thus, ltting µ: S /H S b th multiplication map of S, w dfin NH to b th composition S /H H/H) µ SH/H) N N H S)/). W hav constructd th functor NH : Mack H Mack so that th abov maps satisfy all proprtis of th norm maps of a Tambara functor. Lmma 5.6.
