In this work we are concerned with non-linear reaction diffusion equations with principal part given by p-laplacian and positive diffusion coefficient a ε L, < δ < a ε, which has global attractors A ε. We obtain some properties about the convergence of the solutions of these equations and show the upper semicontinuity of the attractors. October, 23 ICMC-USP. INTRODUCTION Let Ω R n be a bounded domain with smooth boundary Γ := Ω. Consider the second order partial differential equation subjected to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition { ddt u ε (t) div(a ε u ε (t) p 2 u ε (t)) = Bu ε (t), t > u ε () = u W (Ω), () where p > max{2, n/2}, a ε L (Ω), a ε (x) δ > almost everywhere in Ω for every ε [, ε ] and a ε converges to a in L (Ω) when ε. According with [4], by supposing that B satisfies conditions H--H-5 enumerated below, for each ε [, ε ], the problem () has a global attractor A ε in W (Ω) and A ε is embedded in L (Ω). In this work, using some uniform estimates u ε, with respect to ε [, ε ], we obtain convergence of the solutions u ε to u, as ε goes zero and as a consequence of this fact we get the upper semicontinuity of the global attractors A ε at ε =, on W (Ω) topology. To properly state ours results we need to introduce some notation and some conditions that we will assume through this work. Let H = L 2 (Ω), and for every ε [, ε ], consider the operator A ε, defined as follow: * Partially Supported by PROCAD-CAPES , Brazil 39 Sob a supervisão CPq/ICMC

Next we will state a set of hypothesis concerning the perturbation B. They are taken from [4] and [5] in order to show global existence and the existence of global attractors. Let us suppose that B is a Nemitskiĭ operator associated to some real function b = b +b 2 and denote B and B 2 the Nemitskiĭ operators associated to b and b 2, respectively. Actually, we suppose that H- b is increasing, b () =,in such way that A ε B is the subdifferential φ ε of the convex lower semicontinuous map ( u ) φ ε Ω p aε u(x) p b (v)dv dx, u W (Ω), (u) = +, otherwise (we also impose conditions in b in such a way that D(φ ε ) = W (Ω), ε [, ε ]); H-2 b 2 (r) k r + k 2 for all r R, and there exists a constant c > such that for all fixed δ R for some choice of c 2 = c 2 (δ), b 2 (r) c r + c 2 (δ), if r δ; H-3 b 2 satisfies an L local Lipschitz condition, meaning that if K := {u H, u L (Ω) η} for some η >, then there exists ω = ω(η) >, such that B 2 (u) B 2 (v) H ω u v H, for every u, v K; H-4 There exists a real increasing positive function L ( ), γ (, ) and c R such that B 2 u 2 H γ φ ε u 2 H + L ( u H )[(φ ε (u)) 2 + c], u D( φ ε ) and ε [, ε ]; H-5 There exist positive constants α, β R such that B 2 u, u + αφ ε (u) β( u 2 H + ) u D( φ ε ) and ε [, ε ]. Remark.. We observe that H-2 does not imply linear growth. Also, if k is negative we may incorporate k r to b and assume that k is zero. Therefore we may always assume that k is non-negative. Following [5], the assumptions H- and H-4 imply that the problem () has a solution in W (Ω), for every ε [, ε ], while the assumption H-5 implies the global existence of this solutions. As we are not assuming that B is a globally Lipschtz operator, we can not assure uniqueness of solutions for (). In order to obtain existence of global attractors we have Sob a supervisão da CPq/ICMC
3 PARAMETER DEPENDENT QUASI-LINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATIONS 32 to ensure some strong smoothing and attraction properties, and the main tool we employ to overcome this difficulty is a comparison result developed in [3]. The assumption H-2 is used to compare the solutions of problem () with solutions of two auxiliary problems, both with linear perturbations. By this way we obtain L (Ω) bounds, uniformly with respect to ε [, ε ], for solutions of problem (). With those uniforms bounds and H-3 we can assume, without loss of generality, that the perturbation operator B satisfies a global Lipschitz condition. After we have come to this point, we can state that the problem { ddt u ε (t) + φ ε u ε (t) = B 2 u ε (t), t >, ε [, ε ], u ε () = u W (Ω), (3) has a global attractors A ε in W (Ω), embedded in L (Ω), [4], for each ε [, ε ], and the L bounds for the attractors are uniform on ε. Note that the problem (3) is obtained of the problem () by incorporate B to the operator φ ɛ defined in H-. Using estimates in W (Ω) of the solutions of (3), uniforms with respect to ε [, ε ] and uniforms with respect to initial data in bounded sets of W (Ω), we finally show that the family of global attractors {A ε ; ε [, ε ]} is upper semicontinuous at ε =, on W (Ω) topology. This work is organized as follow: In Section 2 we obtain some uniforms bounds, with respect to ε [, ε ], of the solutions of (3) and using the arguments contained in [4] we get existence of global attractors of this problem. In Section 3 we obtain some properties about the convergence of the solutions of the problem (3), as ε goes to zero and obtain the upper semicontinuity of the family of global attractors {A ε ; ε [, ε ]} in ε =. 2. UNIFORM BOUNDS. EXISTENCE OF GLOBAL ATTRACTORS In this section, with the assumptions H- H-5, we will obtain some estimates for solutions u ε of problem (3), uniformly on ε [, ε ]. Those uniform bounds will ensure the existence of global attractors in W (Ω). Also they will be helpful to obtain the upper semicontinuity of this attractors. Lemma 2.. If u ε is a solution of (3), then exist a positive constant K > such that u ε (t) H < K for every t and ε [, ε ]. Proof: In fact, as we have δ u(x) p dx a ε (x) u(x) p dx sup a ε L (Ω) u(x) p dx, (4) Ω Ω Ω for every u W (Ω), from [H-], [H-5] (4) and Young s inequality we obtain that d 2 dt uε (t) 2 H C(δ, p, α, Ω) u ε (t) p H + β( uε (t) 2 H + ) C u ε (t) p H + C 2, Sob a supervisão CPq/ICMC
4 322 C. B. GENTILE, M. R. T. PRIMO where C = C (δ, p, α, β, Ω), and C 2 = C 2 (δ, p, α, β, Ω) are positive constants independent of ε. Then y(t) := u ε (t) 2 H satisfies the inequality d dt y(t) 2C (y(t)) p 2 + 2C2. It follows from Lemma III.5. in [7] that there exists T > such that if t > T, On the other hand, if t T we have that 2 uε (t) 2 H 2 u 2 H + From Gronwall Inequality we obtain that ( ) 2 u ε (t) 2 2C2 p H +. C B 2 u ε (s), u ε (s) ds 2 u 2 H + u ε (t) H C(u, β, T ), t T. T β( u ε (s) 2 H + )ds. Taking K = max { (2C2 C ) 2 p } +, C(u, β, T ), it follows that u ε (t) H K for every t and ε >. Lemma 2.2. If u ε is a solution of (3), then there exist a positive constant K 2 >, independent of ε, such that for every t and ε [, ε ]. Proof: Since u ε (t) W (Ω) < K 2, d dt φε (u ε (t)) = B 2 u ε (t) d dt uε (t), d dt uε (t) B 2 u ε (t) + B 2 u ε (t) d dt uε (t), B 2 u ε (t), then 2 B 2u ε (t) d dt uε (t) 2 H + d dt φε (u ε (t)) 2 B 2u ε (t) 2 H, Sob a supervisão da CPq/ICMC
5 PARAMETER DEPENDENT QUASI-LINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATIONS 323 for every t. From [H-4] and Lemma 2. we get that ( γ) B 2 u ε (t) d 2 dt uε (t) 2 H + d dt φε (u ε (t)) 2 L (K )[(φ ε (u ε (t))) 2 + c], (5) for t. On the other hand, since φ ε () =, we have that d 2 dt uε (t) 2 H + φ ε (u ε (t)) d 2 dt uε (t) 2 H + φ ε (u ε (t)), u ε (t) B 2 u ε (t), u ε (t). Then, [H-5], imply that 2 uε (t + r) 2 H + +r t ( + α)φ ε (u ε (s))ds 2 uε (t) 2 H + +r t β( u ε (s) 2 H + )ds. (6) From Lemma 2. and the Uniform Gronwall Lemma ([7], Lemma III..), (5) and (6), we get that there exists K 2 >, independent of ε, such that φ ε (u ε (t + r)) K 2, for every t. The equivalence given by (4) shows this lemma. The next result ensure uniforms L estimates on ε [, ε ] for solutions of auxiliary problems. Those estimates together with results in [3] will guarantee uniforms L estimates for solutions of problem (3). Lemma 2.3. If u ε is the solution of d dt uε (t) + φ ε u ε (t) = c u ε (t) + c 2, t >, u ε (t, x) =, t >, x Ω, u ε () = u W (Ω), (7) ε [, ε ], there exists a positive constant K 3 >, independent of ε, such that u ε (t) L (Ω) < K 3, for every ε [, ε ] and for t > T, with T large enough. Proof: We know that u ε (t) D(A ε ), for t >. Then, according to [4], we have that u ε (t) L (Ω). Thus, there is a positive constant C = C(c, c 2, δ, u ε (t) H, u ε t (t) H ) such that u ε (t) C. Thus we have to verify only that u ε t (t) H is uniformly bounded with respect to ε [, ε ] for large enough values of t. In fact, if < s < t and h >, we obtain that 2 uε (t + h) u ε (t) 2 H 2 uε (s + h) u ε (s) 2 H + s c u ε (τ + h) u ε (τ) 2 Hdτ. Sob a supervisão CPq/ICMC
6 324 C. B. GENTILE, M. R. T. PRIMO Multiplying by /h 2 and letting h goes to zero, we have that Also, d dt uε (t) 2 H d dt uε (s) 2 H + 2c d dt uε (τ) 2 Hdτ. (8) d dt φε (u ε (t)) = φ ε (u ε (t)), d dt uε (t) = c u ε (t) + c 2 d dt uε (t), d dt uε (t) By integration, from to t, = 2c d dt c u ε (t) + c 2 2 H d dt uε (t) 2 H. s d dt uε (τ) 2 Hdτ φ ε (u ) + 2c (c K + c 2 ) 2, (9) where K is given by Lemma 2.. From (8) and (9) we get that for < s < t, where by (4), d dt uε (t) 2 H d dt uε (s) 2 H + C, () C = 2c φ ε (u ) + (c K + c 2 ) 2 is independent of ε [, ε ]. Integrating () from to t, (9) implies that d dt uε (t) 2 H t for t >. Hence, if T is large enough, for t T and for every ε [, ε ]. d dt uε (s) 2 Hds + C t d dt uε (t) 2 H + C, C 2c + C, At this point we can proof the following result: Theorem 2.. Suppose that the operator B satisfies the assumptions H- H-5, then the problem (3) has a global attractor A ε in W (Ω), for every ε [, ε ]. Furthermore, A ε are uniformly embedded in L (Ω). Proof: From Lemma 2.3 and results contained in [3] we obtain L estimates for solutions of the problem (3), uniformly on ε [, ε ]. With the same arguments used in [4], we get the theorem. 7 PARAMETER DEPENDENT QUASI-LINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATIONS CONVERGENCE PROPERTIES In this section we show that the solutions of the problem (3) tends to the solutions of a limit problem, as ε goes to zero. In particular, we also obtain that the family of global attractors {A ε W (Ω); ε ε } of the problem (3) is upper semicontinuity at ε =, on W (Ω) topology. We start with two technical lemmas. Lemma 3.4. Let {S ε (t) : H H, t } be the semigroup generated by φ ε, ε [, ε ] and u ε the solution of the problem (3). Then S ε (h)u ε (t) u ε (t) H, as h, uniformly in [, ε ], for each t >. Furthermore, if T > we obtain that as h, uniformly in [, ε ]. u ε (T h) S ε (h)u ε (T h) H, Proof: For every ε [, ε ], following [6], we obtain that S ε (h)u ε (t) u ε (t) H 3 u ε (t) J φε h uε (t) H, where J φε h = (I + h φε ). Now, since for every λ > and u H, Proposition 2. in [2] shows that 2λ J φ λ we obtain by Lemma 2.2, ε u u 2 H + φ ε (J φε λ 2h uε (t) J φ h ε u) = min v H with K 2 uniformly with respect to ε [, ε ]. With the same arguments above, we obtain that [ ] 2λ v u 2 H + φ ε (v), uε (t) 2 H + φ ε (J φε h uε (t)) φ ε (u ε (t)) K 2, u ε (T h) S ε (h)u ε (T h) H 2hK 2, with K 2 uniformly with respect to ε [, ε ]. Lemma 3.5. Let u ε be the solution of the problem (3) and u the solution of the problem d dt u(t) + Au(t) B u(t) = B 2 u(t), t > u() = u W (Ω), () Sob a supervisão CPq/ICMC
8 326 C. B. GENTILE, M. R. T. PRIMO where A is the operator A given by (2). For every ε [, ε ], define the function b ε (x) = a ε (x) a(x), almost everywhere in Ω. Then as ε, for every t >. Proof: Firstly note that b ε u ε (s) p 2 u ε (s), u(s) u ε (s) ds, b ε L (Ω) = a ε a L (Ω), as ε. Now, for every s, Hölder inequality yelds that where p + p =. b ε u ε (s) p 2 u ε (s), u(s) u ε (s) b ε L (Ω) u ε (s) p 2 u ε (s) u(s) u ε (s) dx Ω [ ] b ε L (Ω) p u ε (s) (p )p + p u(s) uε (s) p dx, Ω Since, by Lemma 2.2, the integral on second member of the inequality above is uniformly bounded for ε [, ε ] and s, we get the result. The next result shows that the solutions of the problem (3) goes to the solution of the problem (), as ε goes to zero, in H. Theorem 3.2. (). Then, Let u ε be the solution of the problem (3) and u the solution of the problem u ε (t) u(t) H, as ε, uniformly in bounded sets of [T, + ), with T given by Lemma 2.3. Proof: First observe that there exist a positive constant C = C(p, n, δ) such that Au A ε u ε, u u ε = a ( u p 2 u u ε p 2 u ε), u u ε b ε u ε p 2 u ε, u u ε C u u ε p L p (Ω) bε u ε p 2 u ε, u u ε. Additionally, from Lemma 2.3, assumption H-2 and results contained in [5], there exists a positive constant K 4 such that u ε (t) L (Ω) K 4, Sob a supervisão da CPq/ICMC
9 PARAMETER DEPENDENT QUASI-LINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATIONS 327 for t large enough. Again, Lemma 2.3 implies that K 4 is uniform with respect to ε [, ε ]. Also, the operator B 2 satisfies a local Lipschitz condition given by assumption H-3. Therefore, if T is like at Lemma 2.3, u ε e u are the unique solutions of the problems (3) and () respectively. Moreover, there exists ω > such that 2 u(t) uε (t) 2 H +ω b ε u ε (s) p 2 u ε (s), u(s) u ε (s) ds u(s) u ε (s) 2 Hds. The Gronwall Inequality and Lemma 3.5 imply that u(t) u ε (t) 2 H, as ε, uniformly in bounded sets of [T, + ). Finally we have the main result of this work. Theorem 3.3. (). Then, Let u ε be the solution of problem (3) and u the solution of the problem u ε (t) u(t) W (Ω), as ε, on bounded sets of [T, + ), with T given by Lemma 2.3. Proof: For T < t < T, since that u ε (t) W (Ω) K 2, uniformly in [, ε ], every sequence in {u ε (t); ε ε }, has a subsequence {u ε n (t)} that converge weakly to u(t), as ε n, on W (Ω) topology. We will show that u ε n (t) W (Ω) u(t) W (Ω), as ε. To do this, we first note, from Lemma 3.5 and Theorem 3.2, that T T u(s) u ε n (s) p ds W T (Ω) C Au(s) A ε n u ε n (s), u(s) u ε n (s) ds T + C T b ε n u ε n (s) p 2 u ε n (s), u(s) u ε n (s) ds ω C + C T T T T u(s) u ε n (s) 2 Hds T b εn u εn (s) p 2 u εn (s), u(s) u εn (s) ds, Sob a supervisão CPq/ICMC
10 328 C. B. GENTILE, M. R. T. PRIMO as ε n, where ω and C are taken from proof of Theorem 3.2. Therefore, there is a subsequence, {u ε nk (t)}, such that almost everywhere in [T, T ]. Now, fixing t [T, T ], u ε nk (t) u(t) W (Ω), ε n k, + φ εnk (u εnk (t)) φ(u(t)) φ εnk (u εnk (t)) φ εnk (u εnk (θ)) φ ε nk (u ε nk(θ)) φ(u(θ)) + φ(u(θ)) φ(u(t)). (2) Choosing θ [T, T ], close enough of t, in such way that we can conclude that since that the right side of the inequality u ε nk (θ) W (Ω) u(θ) W (Ω), ε n k, φ ε nk (u ε nk (t)) φ ε nk (u ε nk (θ)) φ εnk (u εnk (t)) φ(u(t)), ε nk, 2 θ φ ε nk u ε nk (s), d dt uε nk (s) ds θ B 2 u ε nk (s) 2 Hds, is uniformly bounded in ε nk for s [T, T ] and, by similar arguments, we estimate the third term in the right side on (2). Thus, u ε nk (t) W (Ω) u(t) W (Ω), ε n k, for every t [T, T ]. The result follows since that, for every t [T, T ], as ε nk, showing that u ε nk (t) W (Ω) u(t) and u ε nk (t) W (Ω) u(t) W (Ω), on W (Ω), everywhere in [T, T ]. u εnk (t) u(t), ε nk As an application of Theorem 3.3 we have the following result. 11 PARAMETER DEPENDENT QUASI-LINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATIONS 329 Corollary 3.. The family of global attractors {A ε W (Ω); ε ε } of the problem (3) is upper semicontinuity in ε =, on W (Ω) topology. Proof: Consider the initial value problems (3) and () with initial data ψ ε A ε, for every ε [, ε ]. Theorem 3.3 implies that there exists δ > such that u ε (t) u (t) W (Ω) < δ 2, for every ε [, ε ] and t T. On the other hand, A attracts bounded sets of W (Ω) and the results contained in Section 2 imply that there exists a bounded set B W (Ω) such that A ε B, for every ε [, ε ]. Therefore, there is T 2 > T in such way that Thus, for every ε [, ε ], we obtain that sup dist W (Ω) (u (T 2 ), A ) δ ψ ε A ε ε [,ε ] 2. dist W (Ω) (uε (T 2 ), A ) dist W (Ω) (uε (T 2 ), u (T 2 )) + dist W (Ω) (u (T 2 ), A ) δ. On the other hand, for every ε [, ε ], we have that then we conclude that u ε (T 2 )A ε = A ε, dist W (Ω) (A ε, A ) δ, for every ε [, ε ], completing the proof of the corollary. REFERENCES.
