In this paper, we apply two identities of generalized hypergeometric series in order to extend some classical summation theorems of hypergeometric functions such as Gauss, Kummer, Dixon, Watson, Whipple, Pfaff Saalschütz and Dougall formulas and also obtain some new summation theorems in the sequel. Keywords: generalized hypergeometric series; Gauss and confluent hypergeometric functions; classical summation theorems of hypergeometric functions MSC: 33C0; 33C05; 65B0. Introduction Let R and C denote the sets of real and complex numbers and z be a complex variable. For real or complex parameters a and b, the generalized binomial coefficient: in which: a b Γa + Γb + Γa b + Γz 0 a a b x z e x dx, a, b C, denotes the well-known gamma function for Rez > 0, can be reduced to the particular case: a n n a n, n! where a b denotes the Pochhammer symbol [] given by: a b Γa + b Γa { b 0, a C\{0}, aa +...a + n b N, a C. Based on Pochhammer s symbol, the generalized hypergeometric functions []: a,... b,..., a p, b q z a k...a p k z k b k0 k...b q k k!, Axioms 08, 7, 38; doi:0.3390/axioms
2 Axioms 08, 7, 38 of 0 are indeed a Taylor series expansion for a function, say f, as k0 c k zk with c k f k 0/k!, for which the ratio of successive terms can be written as: c k+ c k k + a k + a...k + a p k + b k + b...k + b q k +. According to the ratio test [3,4], the series is convergent for any p q +. In fact, it converges in z < for p q +, converges everywhere for p < q + and converges nowhere z 0 for p > q +. Moreover, for p q +, it absolutely converges for z if the condition: q A q+ Re b j a j > 0, j j holds and is conditionally convergent for z and z if < A 0 and is finally divergent for z and z if A. There are two important cases of the series arising in many physics problems [5,6]. The first case convergent in z is the Gauss hypergeometric function: with the integral representation: a, b c z y F a, b c z a k b k c k0 k Γc t b t c b tz a dt, ΓbΓc b 0 z k k!, Replacing z in 3 directly leads to the well-known Gauss identity []: a, b c ΓcΓc a b Γc aγc b Re c > Re b > 0; arg z < π. 3 Rec a b > 0. 4 The second case, which converges everywhere, is the Kummer confluent hypergeometric function: y F b c z b k z k c k0 k k!, with the integral representation: F b c z Γc t b t c b e zt dt, ΓbΓc b 0 Re c > Re b > 0; arg z < π. Essentially, whenever a generalized hypergeometric series can be summed in terms of gamma functions, the result will be important as only a few such summation theorems are available in the literature; see, e.g., [7 3]. In this sense, the classical summation theorems such as Kummer and Gauss for F, Dixon, Watson, Whipple and Pfaff Saalschütz for 3 F, Whipple for 4 F 3, Dougall for 5F 4 and Dougall for 7 F 6 are well known [,4]. In this paper, we apply two identities of generalized hypergeometric functions in order to obtain some new summation theorems and extend the above-mentioned classical theorems. For this purpose, we should first recall the classical theorems as follows.

However, some particular cases such as n and n can be directly computed. We leave other cases as open problems. The case n leads to a known result in the literature [4], because:
