5 Welcome to The Scottish Sleuth Vacation Bible School series. Each year, our Scottish Super Sleuths, Angus and Professor Dabney, are called in to solve a Biblical case with the help of our VBS children. The detective characters symbolically portray the message that we want the students to learn to be competent investigators of Biblical truth. This case takes us back to the Old Testament to the Book of Exodus. The VBS students will learn how God delivered His people from slavery in order to make them dependent on Him, give them direction, discipline them, and dwell in their midst as their God. With this study, it is hoped that the children will come to understand more about who God is and the work He does in the Christian s life. In our skit this year, French sleuthette Calvinoux, on holiday in Scotland, is lost in Stirling Castle. She summons and to come to her rescue. While wandering through the castle, the three Bible sleuths recognize the similarities to the Book of Exodus. They work together to solve the Case of the Wilderness Wanderers. The Players Narrator Introduces and concludes the story. Also moves props when necessary. Sleuthette Calvinoux Dressed in sleuth outfit. French accent required. Super Sleuth Angus Scottish accent required. Dressed in long trenchcoat. Often holding an old-fashioned pipe. Professor Dabney Also Scottish. Wears a tweed jacket. Also has a magnifying glass in his possession. The Props Sleuth outfits Magnifying glasses for sleuths Statue of William Wallace (a suit of armor) A throne Poster-size picture of a fire-breathing dragon Large map of castle (with You are Here ) Simulated stocks (with a hole for a head and two holes for hands) Posters for daily themes The Set The backdrop for this year s skit is the famous Stirling Castle in Scotland. Only one set is required. Any interior castle background will do. Page 5

6 Today s Theme: God s people are delivered from slavery Day One Props Statue of William Wallace Hero of Scotland (a suit of armor) Day One Setup is on-stage (in the castle). and are off-stage. is wandering around, aimlessly. Narrator What a beautiful setting we find ourselves in this week, junior sleuths. This is Stirling Castle, home of many of the most momentous events in Scotland s colorful history. Calvinoux, our French Bible sleuthette, has come here on a much needed holiday. But unbeknownst to her, she is about to embark on another exciting and challenging mystery. Talking to herself. Oh, my...oh my...this is now the seventh time I ve passed the statue of that man. How will I ever get out of here? Looking at her watch. And now it s long past closing time. Paces and thinks, then takes out her cell phone. I know, I will send a text to the greatest Scottish Bible Sleuth that has ever lived Angus. He will come and set me free from this terrible bondage! Text messages and sends, then waits. The sleuths quickly walk up to the stage. is reading his text message. Hmmm...Our old friend and sleuthing partner Calvinoux is in trouble, professor! She appears to be hopelessly trapped in our magnificent Stirling Castle! Wow! It s quite providential that we just happen to be in the area putting the finishing touches on the Case of the Howling Hootenannies. But how in the world will we find her? This castle is huge! Stepping onto the stage. According to my calculations, she should be right...there! turns and sees the Sleuths, and is overjoyed. Ah, mon amis, you found me! Merci, merci...it felt like I had been wandering in this dreary castle for 400 years. I might have well been enslaved here for life! Only too happy to help a damsel in distress, my dear lady. But, how did you know to look here? Elementary, my positing professor. Miss Calvinoux mentioned being near a statue of the most famous hero of Scotland in her text message. Pointing at the statue. So, I knew she was located right next to him! (Continued on page 7) Page 6

7 Who is he? Sean Connery? On the contrary, my fickle friend. He is one of the greatest heroes of Scottish lore, Braveheart himself, William Wallace! William Wallace? I don t think I ve ever heard of him. What exactly did he do for Scotland? He only delivered Scotland from centuries of slavery to the English! Every Scottish school boy knows how he brought freedom to our people. Oh! Cool. With finger pointed in the air. Wait just a minute! Don t you see what s happening here, my conundrum companions? Umm...Does it have something to do with William Wallace? Yes and no, my pious professor. It is no mere coincidence that we have all been summoned here, to this castle. I believe I smell another Bible case in our midst. I just smell damp and musty things. Just stop and think about it my friends. Lost wandering 400 years slavery freedom This is not just about Stirling Castle or William Wallace. It should remind you of something else...something that happened much further back in time... before the short history of Scotland. Interesting. Oui. Oui. All three sleuths freeze in place, thoughtfully. Narrator So, this case isn t just about our sleuths freeing young from bondage? Or about William Wallace delivering his people from the English? Then what Bible case could it be? Come back tomorrow, young detectives, to discover more of the Case of the Wilderness Wanderers! End Day One I just thought I was on a much needed holiday. Page 7

9 Today s Theme: God s people are dependent on God s provision Day Two Props A throne A poster size picture of a dragon Day Two Setup None The sleuths and are walking around on stage. Addressing. I think I have it,! Being lost and feeling imprisoned in this castle reminds us of the Israelites being in bondage to Egypt in the Book of Exodus. Is that right? Bravo. You are spot on my sensational sleuthette! Even when on holiday, you must always be prepared and ready for another Bible case. Then I guess this means we have to search for clues instead of making a visit to the castle gift shop. Right again, professor. Your trinket shopping will just have to wait. So, if this is truly a Bible case that has brought us all here, what do we do now? Slowly. We wait. We watch. We think! Well, while we do all that, I am also going to sit. sits in the castle throne. and continue to pace around studying and thinking. Suddenly pointing at. Good thinking, professor you have brilliantly come to rest upon a clue! Do you mean that the throne Professor is sitting upon reminds us of something from our Bible case? I must say that this throne does fit me quite well. I certainly could have been a Scottish lord back in the good old days... Yes, yes, keep fantasizing my fantastical friend. Yet, it is true that he who sits on that throne would be in charge of this entire castle, wouldn t he? Oui, oui. And the lord of the castle would certainly be responsible to provide for all of his people, wouldn t he? I could do that! I really do think that I would make a wonderful lord. 10 The narrator holds up the poster of a firebreathing dragon. (With sound effects, if possible.) Whirling around and pointing at the dragon. Okay...but what do you make of that? The threesome looks in shock and horror. Oh my, where did that beast come from? It certainly must be a clue. In panic. As newly proclaimed lord of this castle, I, Lord, delegate the responsibility of protecting us from that fire-breathing monster to Sir. Well, my diligent detective, I believe that is for our junior sleuths to find out. The group freezes in place. Narrator You heard Super Sleuth, young detectives! It is up to you to discover how our story relates to the Old Testament people of God. Study hard, stay clear of fire-breathing dragons, and come back tomorrow for more of the Case of the Wilderness Wanderers! End Day Two Do not be alarmed my fearful friend. It is only a vision to teach us about our Bible case. Certainly the true lord of Stirling Castle would have protected his people from this dragon! Ahhh. Now, I understand. The people living around this castle would definitely depend on the lord for both provision and protection. But what does that have to do with the Israelites in the Book of Exodus? Did they ever need provision and protection? Certainly not from a fire-breathing dragon! Page 10
