CHAPTER V PSYCHOANALYTIC ANALYSIS In this chapter, the researcher analyse of the novel based on the psychoanalytic. It used to analyze personality change that is reflected in The Curse of Maleficent. It is correlating with the discussion of previous chapter. In this chapters divide into two points, first is depression analysis, and second is discussion of psychoanalytic. A. Analysis on Maleficent s Depression Depression is one of mental disorder that influenced mind way, feeling, mood and the way of daily live. Someone who have run into depression, they will feel sad endless, up hope, don t have motivation to do activity, losing of interesting with something entertain, and blame their self. Depression is one of mood interference. The other name of mood interference is affective disorder. Depression is self defeat, where love sense to own self is gone and feeling that never going toback again. The sadness, despair, and depression cause by lose sense. Lose an important thing in their self. It will change the mood or someone personality that different than normally. Based on the object of the study is The Curse of Maleficent novel. Depression is one the issue in the novel, it is related with the content of the novel that telling about the fairies who have depression because of losing precious thing in their self....they spoke of a horned fairies whose wings had been brutally cut and taken by her human companion. Who wandered around, using a wooden staff to steady her. Who had taken refuge in the ruins of a long-abandoned castle nearby. Robin sprung into the air. we have to go to her! while he had always been suspicious of Stefan, he would never have guessed the boy would have betrayed 48

49 Maleficent in such a horrific way. Taking her wings! He couldn t imagine the pain she had gone through. Wait, the birds chirped. There is more. The human took the wings to the castle to prove that he avenged the dying king. And now he is to be King Henry s successor. (TCoM, p. 30) Based on the quote above is explained that fairies who losing their wings is the big trouble for their live, because of losing precious thing (wings) is the cause that made Maleficent became depression. She is feels betrayed, sad and disappointed were made Maleficent s mood change and changed by emotion in her heart. Robin and Sweetpea stared at the birds. Maleficent had saved an animal in need. That, at least, sounded like her. But the way she done it... the forces she had summoned to completely change him into a new form at her whim... that was very powerful magic, magic that surfaced only when one was under great emotional distress. While Maleficent, like the other fairiess, had always had powers to help plants grow, heal animals, usher along streams, and the like, they d never seen her-or any fairies, for that matter-do anything like this. This was a dark magic. (TCoM, p. 31) Based on the quote above is explained that emotional distress that controlling Maleficent s mind and personality. Fairies just use their magic to help and heal animals and plants. Because of her emotional distress that caused depression, she summoned her dark magic. The raven became her servant and as her eyes and wings to know about Stefan. Not just depression that became an aspect of personality change, but there is Self Concept that influenced and buildsmaleficent s personality. Self concept its self have Basic Self-Concept or real-self, it issomeone concept about their self,

50 which involve appearance, ability, inability, the role or status in their life, the values, believing, and aspiration. Maleficent it is more pressing on their appearance, ability, inability, role and status in their life. From that concepts can be explained one by one about how Maleficent s real-self develop and change their personality that caused depression. 1) The appearance. Maleficent is one of beautiful creatures andfairies who looks like her mother and have her father eyes. Hermina and Lysander. seeing the young fairies fly reminded Robin of Maleficent s mother. Hermia. Hermia had been beautiful, with long, dark locks, a tall, humansized frame, and magnificent black wings. Maleficent would no doubt be the striking image of her mother when she grew up. Except for her eyes, of course. Maleficent had inherited her eyes from her father. Lysander. They sparkled like glowing jade pools. (TCoM, p. 4-5) But, Maleficent s appearance is change, when her moods have pressure for covering herself. Her new appearance represents how Maleficent condition is going on. Thefairies seemed to have grown taller since Knotgrass had seen her last. She wore a long black cape that matched the dark horns protruding from her head. As Maleficent gazed around the room, she raised one perfectly arched eyebrow. In her hand she held a long staff that appeared to be made from the branch of a tree. It was gray and twisted, covered in knots. And on her shoulder sat the jet-black raven, her new companion. Robin II, Knotgrass called him in her head. (TCoM, p. 43) 2) The ability. Maleficent s ability is help plants grow and heal animals like other fairies. Because of her emotional

51 pressure. The self concept about good fairies is excluded when she used dark magic, it is powerful magic caused by emotional distress.... that was very powerful magic, magic that surfaced only when one was under great emotional distress. While Maleficent, like the other fairies, had always had powers to help plants grow, heal animals, usher along streams, and the like, they d never seen her-or any fairies, for that matter-do anything like this. This was a dark magic. (TCoM, p. 31) 3) The inability. Maleficent s inability is they cannot fly again like before, because she lost her wings. Every fairy in the Moors haswings, just Maleficent who do not have the wings. This Maleficent inability can be call as the ideal self concept. 4) The role and life status. Maleficent is a strong fairies in the Moors who has a duty to protect it from human and prevent a war between of them. Based on the self concept above, the change personality can be caused by somefactors, that is physical factor, social culture environment, and ownself. Maleficent s change personality became an evil caused by betrayed and loss something important in herself. Emotional pressure as base as ownself factor.

52 B. Analysis on Maleficent s Personality In the personality structure by Freud, there are three concepts Id, Ego, and Super Ego. ID EGO SUPER EGO Her Id take control some part of psyche energy, so she got aggressive act, it is mean she became an evil because of some reason to change herself and doing something that she want. Because of her Ego has take control by her Id, she was blind by revenge about what she has got. But, her Id succeeding at hold by Ego. So, Maleficent was started to think right and wrong about what she did at time Her Superego has optimizing the function to thought and feel, so she could follow up with a cool head and conscience. In The Curse of Maleficent novel, Maleficent has temperamentsanguineous or personality characteristic system. Sanguineous is a base personality or characteristic. In Sanguineous there are two traits. First, trait basicly: jovial, optimistic, and confidence. Sanguineous trait basic can be described that Maleficent is a jovial fairies and brave to defend the Moors, her homes.... Maleficent. The brave lass. No matter what her relationship with the human was, she truly loved the Moors and the Fair Folk who lived there. She had gone to the front lines, risking her life to protect them... (TCoM, p. 27) Sanguineous also have trait feeling, one of them is have feeling about easy to conform. Maleficent is easy to conform to someone who meet her in first time. In this situation, Maleficent is

53 easy to get new relation with her new friend. Stefan. The boy is meetingher at the Great waterfall when he stole shine stone. where do you live now? Maleficent asked In a barn, Stefan replied. Maleficent learned forward, interest sparkling in her green eyes. A barn? So your parents are farmers, then? Stefan shook his head. My parents are dead. Mine too, she said softly.(tcom, p.19) When Maleficent meet and know it Stefan each other and feel that he is different than others, without attend the Robin s argue about human; from Sanguineous traits, Maleficent change her traits became Choleric, where she get influence from her own self it is her emotion and one of Choleric traits basic is negative action that push Maleficent to summoned dark magic to the raven.... the forces she had summoned to completely change him into a new form at her whim... that was very powerful magic, magic that surfaced only when one was under great emotional distress. While Maleficent, like the other fairies, had always had powers to help plants grow, heal animals, usher along streams, and the like, they d never seen her-or any fairies, for that matter-do anything like this. This was a dark magic. (TCoM, p.31) Besides using dark magic, the Choleric traits that have change; in the others traits: Maleficent became emotional and not toleration. She became emotional because of betrayed by Stefan who trust by her because he is different. Her emotion also influence by her mental that made her became depression because of losing something precious. Her wings. Emotion and depression that became one and made her to revenge, because of her choleric trait basic and other trait in negative action and provocation.

54 In psychoanalytic structure, someone personality is base on three aspects, there are: Id, Ego, Superego that each aspect has owns role. Id in Biologic, Ego in Psychologis, and Superego in Sociologis. From that aspects can be described about Maleficent s personality is change. 1. Id In this Id, there are three parts how Maleficent used the Id when she change her personality. The first part, Id is the components that are present from birth, aspect of the personality of the fully conscious and instinctive behavior and including from primitive. Id also pushed for immediate satisfaction of pleasure to principle of all wants and needs. Idtries to resolve tensions that are created for the principle of pleasure through the primary process, which involves the formation of a mental image of the desired object as a way to satisfy the needs of. Maleficent conscious with Stefan s betrayed her, having already cut its wings. The betrayed feeling that mastering her personality aspect fully consciously. Robin sprung into the air. we have to go to her! while he had always been suspicious of Stefan, he would never have guessed the boy would have betrayed Maleficent in such a horrific way. Taking her wings! He couldn t imagine the pain she had gone through. (TCoM, p.30) Base on the quote above is explained that Maleficent s feel betrayed because of Stefan s do. She thinks that he is different and she did not see him in the King Henry s battalion when attacking the Moors. That betrayed have hurt Maleficent because of him cut her precious wings. In

55 situation, depression that made Maleficent became sad and heartache. Second, Id is the dark side of human personality that risk to others-harm and self-harm. Depression that happening towards Maleficent has influence her Id in her personality to became evil fairy that use dark magic and summon a curse to excite her depression to someone who make her sad and disappointment. Finally, Maleficent raised her head. Turning around, she addressed the crowd. listen well, all of you, she began. The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty. Beloved by all who know her. But before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will... Maleficent paused. Knotgrass watched as the fairies looked about the room, searching for something. Her gaze lingered on one of the gifts brought for Aurora. Smiling, she went on:... prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death. A sleep from which she will never awaken. (TCoM, p. 46) All right, Maleficent said. Then she shrugged her shoulders, which looked barren and odd without the expansive wings attached to them. Maleficent waited one more moment before finally saying, The princes can be woken from her death sleep, but only by... True Love s kiss, wind began to blow again as Maleficent started toward the doors. But she was not quite finished. This curse will last until the end of time, she added with a pointed look at King Stefan. No power on earth can change it, (TCoM, p. 47)

56 In the quote above is explained, Maleficent avenge her suffering due to the loss of her wings and betrayal in a way cursed Aurora while still a baby. MaleficentId has full take control of Maleicent s personality because Id has not considered the effect of fulfillment of desire to revenge her pain. In this situation her s Ego has not take control her s Id, although Ego as Id controller but in this situation it not be. Maleficent is too deep to revenge her pain and betrayed, that is the way how Maleficent can summon the dark magic in emotional distress. Id is the original of personality system as main source from psychological energy and the place of insticnt from. 2. Ego Ego is the personality component that responsible for handle with reality. Ego is expending from Id and ensures that encouragement of Id can be expressed in a manner acceptable to the real world. Ego is work base on reality principle that trying to satisfy the desire of the Id in a way that is appropriate and social reality. First, Ego actually has not different with Id but the little bit different from Id is there have a control from themselves.ego is the Id controller. Ego has a role as excecutive that manage, rule and control the personality. Aurora nodded. You re my fairies godmother, she replied. A smile tugged at the corner of the fairies s lips. Your... what? Aurora could see that the creature was trying hard not to laugh, but she didn t care. She knew it was true. Fairies godmother, Aurora repeated. You ve been watching over me my

57 whole life. I ve always known you were close by. (TCoM, p. 113) Base on the quote above is explained that Maleficent Ego has take control her personality, actually she is surprise and not want to reveal her real identity because of recessive situation she has rule and manage her personality to recognizes that she is fairy godmother that Aurora said. Second, Ego has a rule to control Id which aims to prevent someone to not became wild and uncontrol. Timeby time Maleficent feel something wrong and different than before she did not know what it is. Maleficent sego that disclose the fact that she felt for at Aurora. unware of her audience, Maleficent went on. I was so lost in hatred and revenge. I never dreamed that I could love you so much, sweet Aurora You stole what was left of my heart, Maleficent said. (TCoM, p. 189) The curse is broken by Maleficent itself. Her true lovekiss is the power that can broke her curse and Aurora wake up from the death sleep. She can deny that she truly love Aurora so much. In this situation Maleficent s Ego has success to take control the Id, she will became a somebody that start to thinks true or false. It is can be change dependen on the environment situation arounds her. from explanation above, Maleficent is start that what she do all this time is wrong. The Ego is the rule of impulse Id to not trespass the Superego values.

58 Third, When Maleficent and Aurora wants to leave the castle, they were intercepted by an army of Aurora s father and Maleficent fight with Stefan. After getting her wings back because Aurora found it in the showcase that was in one of the rooms in the castle and solve it. There is fight outside o the castle that is on the bridge. Then Maleficent swooped down. The sudden movement caused Stefan to lose his grip on the chain. There was a thud as he hit the bridge. A moment later, Maleficent landed nearby. (TCoM, p. 211) Base on the quote above it is explained that Maleficent and Stefan fierce fight. In Maleicent s fightbecame strong than before because she got the wings back. She almostkills Stefan, but hernot to do that because there is an impulse or boost from Superego to not kill Stefan. Her Egohas act to decide not to kill Stefan even though she is very angry at him. She realizes that anger willget her nowhere. Forgiveness is a far more powerful tool, and she will not hurt Aurora by hurting her next of kin. She will not use violence to solve the conflict. She would opt for peace. But in the end, Stefan is dead because his struggling to kill Maleficent when both of them fall down from the bridge, when he hold tight her wings. But, Maleficent can freedom from his arms wrapped. If something not changes, theyare going die together 3. Superego Superego has to work for develop the personality; superego is personality aspect that accommodate all internalization of moral standards and conscience because it is a filter from kind-bad sensor, true-false, should-should

59 not be. Superego gives a guide to make an assessment. Superego is tending to oppose das ich (Id) or Das Es (Ego). Maleficent Superego is the part of personality that has been realize about her depression condition. Maleficent has optimized her superego s function as a filter of conscience. Although the Id has control by Ego to thinks about badness and goodness, sometime it is not work because it is dependent on environment. With superego, Maleficent try to understand and follow-up with presence of mind. Unaware of her audience, Maleficent went on. I was so lost in hatred and revenge. I never dreamed that I could love you so much, sweet Aurora. (TCoM,p.189) Base on the quote above it is explained that Maleficent feel fault to Aurora, because she revenge her hatred on Stefan to Aurora. But, time by time she realize that she fault, she feel that Aurora stole what is left of her heart. Maleficent just used to be so bitter and so angry. She thinks she will never love anyone before Aurora came along.

60 Base on the explanation about Id, Ego, Superego above about how Maleficent personality develop it can be draw the process from Id, Ego and Superego of Maleficent. Maleficent' personality (Sanguinis) Impulse : Betrayed feeling, anxiety, emotion, and depression Koleris Id (using dark magic, summon a curse and became an evil) Ego (because she get depression and her Id that take control of her personality almost over all, but her Ego that as an Excecutive to make her personality has change. Her Ego that has a fucntion to rule and personality control) This Ego also get impulse from Id Maleficent as Aurora Fairy godmother (base on that condition, Maleficent cannot say anything Aurora s argument and Maleficent cannot refuse about what Aurora s statment about fairy godmother) Maleficent became evil (but not over all her personality is evil)

61 Maleficent has started to feel comfort with Aurora and has realized about what Maleficent feel towards Aurora. Impulse from Aurora that makes Maleficent revenge, sad and depression has gone from her personality. Superego as conscience that help Maleficent became extroverted and realize about there is something missing in her heart and there is something wrong in her personality, because she has too deep in the revenge and hatred. Because of her sadness that influence her personality that caused depression. She can fix it with some impulses from her environment. Ego In Maleficent s personality, Ego is the key of her personality because her Ego has take control of Id, so that Maleficent has start to think about right and wrong and make her Id not trespass with her Superego. Maleficent sego also gives some influence and changes her the way of thinking. Maleficent sid is too strong to control because there is some pressure from her heart to kill Stefan, because her heart is too long covered by hatred, but her Id can be control with impulse from Aurora that change her personality and minds This is the other sides of Maleficent that really want to kill Stefan because her Id is too strong, but her Ego can control her Id. In this situation she gets an impulse from Superego too. Maleficent as Aurora Fairy godmother (base on that condition, Maleficent cannot say anything Aurora s argument and Maleficent cannot refuse about what Aurora s statement about fairy godmother) Impulse from Aurora: Trust feeling and forgivenes Impulse: her Superego to not madcap in doing something (to kill) although she in hatred and in revenge, because her Superego as mediator from Id and ego to have calm down minds.

62 C. Discussion of the Finding Based on the Psychoanalytic Analysis above, the researcher finds that the major character, Maleficent has a bad psychology because of depression. It is proved by her change personality she got depression because some aspects that influence her s psychology. Her laments of personality are Id, Ego, Superego and depression that happen in herself. There elements that have some kinds of relation to develop her personality to change her others personality. That element that described how is Maleficent condition. In The Curse of Maleficent, Elizabeth Rudnick gives attention to the personality elements and focuses on one character. The story of Maleficent has setting place in the fairytale. Maleficent s personality is sanguineous before she got some factorsthat influence her personality and change to be choleric. Maleficent s personality that make this novel interesting because it is the different side of her. Maleficent s personality is easy to make a friends, enjoy, brave, powerful fairies and beautiful fairies. Elizabeth Rudnick showed whomaleficent truly. In The Curse of Maleficent, someone s personality can be changed because some factors that influence their psychology. In this novel Maleficent s personality has change because of depression. She has depression because of loss something important in her life, it is her wings. The wings are important and precious for afairy. But not just loss her wings that make her became depression, the other factor is betrayed feeling from Stefan. He is who cut her wings. The three elements such as Id, Ego, Superego that Maleficent has in her personalityinfluence each other to develop her personality to cover her pain because of betrayed feeling and she lost something important from their heart it is love feeling. She did not believe any more about love when she has depression. The three elements of Id, Ego, Superego, the big role that influence Maleficent s personality is Ego. Her Ego that made her to revenge her pain,

63 but there are some other impulses that strengthen her personality such as anxiety fear, emotion, depression. There are the impulse that made her used a dark magic and summoned her curse. She is blind of hatred and revenge so she has big ambition to revenge her pain to Stefan. In The Curse of Maleficent novel, the personality can be changed from good to evil. There is a factor or impulse that influence someone personality is realizes about what they have done is wrong and it will injure other else. Love is the impulse that made Maleficent is change to become good fairies again. She realizes that hatred and revenge that make her walk in wrong way. Aurora gave an impulse to Maleficent s personality. Maleficent thinks that she is reside in wrong way of hatred and revenge that made her became depression (Id). Her Superego which consider to change her personality, and Ego that decided, in otherways Maleficent s Ego that made her to realize about what she has done in time.
