In the early 12th century, a writer called Geoffrey of Monmouth published the story of a wise man called Merlin who gave advice to British kings. Merlin was a monk, a magician and an astronomer. He was also an oracle whose predictions always came true. It was Merlin, for example, who advised King Uther to establish the knightly fellowship of the Round Table and who suggested that his true heir would be the one to draw a sword from a stone in which it was set. After Prince Arthur pulled the sword out and became king, Merlin became his tutor and helped him to direct and organize the kingdom of Camelot. There are various theories regarding Merlin s death: some writers say he died in a cave, some say he fell in love with a female character known as the Lady of the Lake and was imprisoned by her, others say he became mad and disappeared.
